WELCOME TO
A very warm welcome to Sandown Park for the 160th Grand Military Gold Cup Meeting
It is a huge pleasure to have you here with us today and I hope that you have a really enjoyable - and possibly even profitable - day’s racing There is always a very special atmosphere about today’s meeting It is of course partly the excitement of seeing service riders taking on formidable fences, partly meeting up with old friends, partly the wonderful atmosphere that Sandown Park fosters but mostly because we are always privileged to have such strong and enthusiastic supporters like you. Thank you very much for coming
It is a particular honour to welcome our Royal Patron, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, back to Sandown again today and to extend our grateful thanks for all Her Royal Highness’ continuing support and patronage.
We are very grateful to Army Sport who are sponsoring the Grand Military Gold Cup for the fourth year and we are delighted to welcome them back to Sandown Park We are also delighted to welcome some other special guests. Today we will see 750 young people exploring the displays in the Surrey and Esher Halls as they consider a career in His Majesty’s Armed Forces; and we will also be joined by several representatives of the Veteran Community including the Capel Classic Military Vehicles Group, Horse Drawn Heritage, the Windsor Knights and some of our local Veterans’ Hubs
I hope you will be joining us around the Parade Ring before racing starts to celebrate three generations of the wider services family as we enjoy the Pipes and Drums of Gordon’s School, representing the military of tomorrow, along with both Regular and Reserve musicians from the Rifles Band, supported by the Chelsea Pensioners and the Standard Bearers of The Royal British Legion The Regular army musicians are all part of the Royal Corps of Army Music and the Reserve musicians are part of the Rifles Regiment. We are also honoured once again to be able to host a party from the Defence Attaché community in London
Another most important partner today is Walking with the Wounded, the wonderful charity who do so much for our veterans and the wider military community.
You will have noticed that this year’s meeting is once again being hosted in late January, having moved from its traditional March slot in 2024. This is because we needed to fit in with Jockey Club Racecourses overall programme and to space the four military races we now enjoy – Plumpton, the Grand Military, the Royal Artillery meeting and Wincanton – across the national hunt season.
And, of course, there would be no racing without our wonderful owners and trainers who field their precious horses and our service jockeys who ride them and are able to share the weighing room with today’s professional jockeys. Wish them well as they take on the challenges of today’s races, cheer them on and cheer them home
Most importantly, please really enjoy yourselves Eat, drink, party and go home having had a fantastic day.

ARMED FORCES INFORMATION
PODIUM GUARDS - HMS COLLINGWOOD
The Presentation Podium Guards are sailors from HMS COLLINGWOOD whose principal responsibilities include the provision of Royal Navy leadership, warfare and engineering training, and military diving training. Today’s podium guards are Petty Officer Bonnie Anderson, Able Rating Karl Griffiths and Able Rating Alice Roberts, who appear by kind permission of Captain Tim Davey Royal Navy, Commanding Officer HMS COLLINGWOOD, Captain Maritime Warfare School.
OUTRIDERS – KING’S TROOP ROYAL HORSE ARTILLERY
The Outriders, who lead the runners out to the course, are from the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery. The unit in its current form was created after World War Two, and at the request of King George VI, they are “dressed and equipped in the traditional style”. They continue to be responsible for the firing of Royal Salutes to mark the grand occasions of State, including the King’s Birthday Parade, Royal Birthdays and Births.
The soldiers are drawn from across the Royal Artillery who find, track and strike at range anywhere, in all weathers and at any time, in order to defeat the enemy. Using high-tech surveillance devices and un-crewed aircraft, they find the enemy and monitor them before striking decisively They do this through the coordinated use of guns, rockets and missiles, including the Army’s attack helicopters, fast jets and even the guns of Royal Navy ships.
Riding today are Gunner Elise Piercey and Gunner Stephanie Coates on Seabiscuit (Chase) and Spider (Rover), who appear by kind permission of Major Luke Wadman RHA, Commanding Officer, the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery
THE BAND AND BUGLES OFTHE RIFLES
Today we have Regular and Reserve musicians from the Rifles. The Regular army musicians are all part of the Royal Corps of Army Music and the Reserve musicians are part of the Rifles Regiment. The Regular band is based at Worthy Down in Winchester and the Reservists are from the Waterloo Band and Bugles of The Rifles, based in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. The Rifles Regiment was formed in 2007 and was created through the amalgamation of The Devonshire and Dorset Light Infantry, The Light Infantry, The Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Light Infantry and The Royal Green Jackets.
The band and the Regiment’s history is manifested in their green uniforms. The unique coloured jackets and black buttons stem back to the 17th Century when Riflemen were the first British soldiers to wear camouflage instead of red tunics. Silver bugles allowed orders to be passed over long distances because Riflemen operated in dispersed teams with individuals selected for their marksmanship, fitness and initiative. The band’s accelerated pace and ‘double’ march, still used across the Regiment today, reflect a tradition of quick movement and thinking. The unique Back-Badge; Croix de Guerre shoulder flashes; each soldier’s rank being worn only on the right arm to prevent it being seen when firing a rifle at the enemy; and, the band is the fastest marching band in the British Army adopting a tempo of 140 beats per minute, all add further distinction to The Band and Bugles of The Rifles.
The Band and Bugles of The Rifles performs today by kind permission of Lieutenant General Sir Tom Copinger-Symes, Colonel Commandant of The Rifles.
THE ROYALARTILLERY HUNT
The hounds of the Royal Artillery Hunt will be paraded in front of you today by the Joint Master and Amateur Huntsman Mr Charles Carter, assisted by Simon Hand - the Hunts professionally employed Kennel Huntsman and 1st Whipper In. The Hunt is the only remaining military pack of foxhounds in the country and has strong links to the Regiments based on Salisbury Plain as well as the civilian community surrounding it.
BEST SHOD COMPETITION
THE WORSHIPFUL COMPANY OF FARRIERS
The Best Shod Award will take place in The Winners’ Enclosure after The Grand Military Gold Cup Today’s Best Shod Horse will be judged by Robin May, a Farrier with over forty years’ experience shoeing competition horses and is a former England Shoeing Team member We caught up with him at his forge in Wokingham to ask him about today’s competition
1. WHAT IS A FARRIER?
A farrier is the name given to someone who maintains horses’ hooves.
2. CAN A HORSE RUN WITHOUT SHOES?
As a general rule, with very limited exceptions, all horses competing in races must be shod, meaning that they must run with shoes
3. HOW DOES A FARRIER PLACE A SHOE ON A HORSE’S HOOF?
The shoe and nails are attached to a non-sensitive part of the hoof
4. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO BECOME A FARRIER?
To become a Farrier you must undertake a five year training course
5. CAN ANYONE SHOE A HORSE?
You must be qualified to shoe a horse - it is an offence to shoe a horse without a qualification.
6. WHO GOVERNS FARRIERS?
Farriers are trained and examined by The Worshipful Company of Farriers. A Livery company 661 years old this year and since 1977 the Company has the legal obligation to set the standards for horse shoeing. www.WCF.org.uk
7. CAN WOMEN BECOME FARRIERS?
Yes, the Worshipful Company of Farriers have outstanding female farriers in the UK
8. WHAT ARE RACING SHOES MADE FROM?
Racing shoes are made from steel or aluminum.
9. CAN RACEHORSES WEAR PLASTIC SHOES?
Racehorses do not wear plastic shoes because they do not have sufficient traction on the ground
10. HOW OFTEN IS A RACEHORSE SHOD?
In pre-race training, a racehorse is shod every 4 weeks and shod every time a horse runs a competitive race.
11. CAN A HORSE RUN FASTER BECAUSE OF THE SKILL IN SHOEING?
If a horse is well shod and comfortable with their shoes, it can optimise their performance but not necessarily enhance it
12. IS IT DANGEROUS SHOEING A HORSE?
Working with any animal has its dangers, but half a ton thoroughbred in peak race condition can offer some scary moments!
13 WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART ABOUT SHOEING AND WHAT WILL YOU BE LOOKING FOR TODAY?
A well-trimmed balanced foot with shoes suitable for purpose
14. WILL THE HORSE WINNING THE BEST SHOD WIN THE RACE?
The farrier is a small but important part of the overall training process. It will have a good chance

IMPERIAL CUP DAY
The Ultimate Pre-Cheltenham Party SATURDAY 8 MARCH
Building nicely on from her strong second at Wincanton on Boxing Day, Phillip Hobbs & Johnson White’s six-year-old Georgi Girl was magnificent here. Ridden by Major Charlie O’Shea, she was prominent throughout the race and took the lead just before the second to last jump. It wasn’t the most fluent of leaps but from then on, she stormed clear to win by a massive 19 lengths. She carried this from over into his next start as well, scoring at Kempton a month later.

IN FOCUS: FARCEUR DU LARGE
Winning one Military Gold Cup over 3 miles in soft ground is an accomplishment,doingthesamejust20dayslaterisaprettyimpressive feat, but to do the Military double back-to-back? It’s never been done before 2025couldseetheJamie-SnowdentrainedFARCEURDULARGE make Military race history and be the first horse to do it
The 10-year-old son of Turgeon, known at home as ‘Frank The Tank,’ completed a memorable double for owners the Racing Club Syndicate in 2024 under Major Will Kellard; taking the Grand Military Gold Cup on 26th January and then the Royal Artillery Gold Cup on 15th February.
A near faultless performance from Farceur Du Large in the Grand Military Gold Cup saw Jamie claim his first victory in the race as a trainer, having previously won the race four times as a jockey, with the horse coming home four-and-a-quarter lengths ahead of favourite Rose of Arcadia Hopes were understandably high in the lead-up to the Royal Artillery Gold Cup and the horse duly delivered. Setting off as 13/8 favourite, Will was left in the clear two from home and the eyecatching grey powered up the Sandown Park hill to another dominant victory of six-and-a-half lengths.
Itwasan emotionalachievementfor all connections, the perfectend to a plan which had been 10-years in the making, as Farceur Du Large had been purchased specifically with ambitions of winning these Military races. Former soldier turned adventurer Jordan Wylie, who co-founded the Racing Club syndicate and purchased the horse, had worked under Jamie during their time in the military and together they had dreamt of winning these Military races. Farceur Du Large made those dreams a reality.
Major Will Kellard will once again partner Farceur Du Large in today’s renewal of the Grand Military Gold Cup (sponsored by Army Sport) and should they be victorious, it will be one step closer to that illustrious back-to-back double A feat that has never been achieved; RATHLIN ROSE came very close in 2018 having secured the double in 2017, going ontowintheRoyalArtilleryGoldCupthefollowingyearbeforefinishing an agonising second in the Grand Military Gold Cup back when the race was held in March, and was therefore the second leg.
All eyes will be on Farceur Du Large and Major Kellard today and we wish them the very best of luck
SPECIAL CARGO: 40 YEARS ON
TheGrandMilitaryGoldCuphasbeenwonbysomeremarkable horses in its extensive and rich history. In recent years, fan favourites such as LOOSE CHIPS, LE REVE and ROLLING DYLAN have all been successful. Digging back further into the record books, CHARLES DICKENS was a three-time winner between 1970-72. No horse, however, stands out more in the history books than SPECIAL CARGO.
Owned by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, Special Cargo was a horse that defied all the odds throughout his career. Tendon injuries had often plagued him, but despite two years off the track between 1982-1984, he returned to put up arguably his best performances in that season itself.
Sandown Park was a course that Special Cargo could very much call home. He won at the course seven times in total, which included three consecutive Grand Military Gold Cups – an achievement only equalled by KLAXTON and CHARLES DICKENS since 1950. He is also the joint-oldest winner of the race since 1950, winning his third Grand Military Gold Cup at the age of 13. The only other horse being Brunton Park in 1991.
For all three of his wins in the Grand Military Gold Cup, Special Cargo was accompanied by jockey Gerald Oxley and trained by Fulke Walwyn, himself a successful jockey who won the 1936 Grand National aboard REYNOLDSTOWN. As a trainer, Fulke also trained winners of Gold Cups, Champion Hurdles and King George VI Chases however Special Cargo will have no doubt held a special place in his heart. Training a winner for any member of the Royal family is an honour most trainers crave, let alone Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother who was so passionate about her horseracing.
Special Cargo’s first Grand Military Gold Cup win in 1984 came off the back of a long absence of two years. He won two prep races in short time at Sandown Park leading into the race before showing he was as good as ever when winning today’s feature race That would not be his final foray to Sandown Park in that season, winning one of the most iconic renewals of the Whitbread Gold Cup (now known as the bet365 Gold Cup) in a three-way photo finish. His win in that race looked unlikely throughout, until a remarkable late surge up the Sandown Park hill saw him claw back his rivals.
The most remarkable of his three Grand Military Gold Cup victories was arguably his third and final win. Jockey Gerald Oxley broke one of his irons after jumping the final railway fence and proceeded to complete the rest of the race without either of his feet in stirrups Jumping the second last, Special Cargo looked beaten and that picture only looked clearer when he jumped the last, but as was his tradition he revelled climbing the Sandown Park hill and again got the better of a photo finish. This win would also form part of a treble on that day for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother.
In 2001, a statue of Special Cargo was erected at Sandown Park overlooking the parade ring, which can be visited here today (pictured below). The statue commemorates not only Special Cargo’s remarkable record at Sandown Park, but also Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother’s affiliation and love of Sandown Park. She was here to unveil the statue when it was revealed to the public.

THE GRAND MILITARY GOLD CUP
(sponsored by Army Sport)
The Duke of Gloucester Memorial Trophy of Caprice And Foal
The Duke of Gloucester Memorial Trophy of Caprice and Foal will be presented today to the winning trainer of The Grand Military Gold Cup(sponsored by Army Sport).
Caprice belonged to Captain W H Eve (13th Hussars). She carried him at the head of his squadron in the cavalry charge at the Battle of Lajj, south of Baghdad, on 5 March 1917.
Captain Eve was killed and the mare received many wounds. Over a year later, when she had recovered, she was recognised in the ranks of an Indian Cavalry Regiment. She was returned to her own Regiment and taken to her retirement in England. In May 1920, she had a foal by Gay Lally.
The Officers of the 13th/18th Royal Hussars (Queen Mary’s Own) commissioned a statuette representing Caprice and her foal and adopted the statuette as their Regimental wedding present. The Duke of Gloucester Memorial Trophy is the present which the Officers of the Regiment gave to His Royal Highness in May 1935, on the occasion of his marriage.
In 1975, Her Royal Highness Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, gave the statuette to the Grand Military Race Committee, of which her late husband was Chairman for 38 years. This was done with the approval of the Colonel, 13th/18th Royal Hussars (QMO), and some of the Officers who subscribed to the wedding present in 1935.
13 March 1976 saw the first race for The Duke of Gloucester Memorial Trophy, in the presence of Her Royal Highness, Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester.
Nine-year-old gelding Farceur Du Large enjoyed a tremendous start to life under new trainer Jamie Snowden, scoring here on his debut for his new yard. Ridden by Major Will Kellard, he was prominent throughout the contest, moving into second just after the halfway point. By the time they reached the last he was two lengths clear of the field and kept on well to score the win ahead of Joe Tizzard’s Rose Of Arcadia, four and a quarter lengths behind in second. He’s back again this year to defend his crown.

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Sandown Park Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
