WELCOME Welcome to what is normally our traditional Bank Holiday Monday race day; in the days leading up to the Platinum Jubilee, visitors to Cartmel will be among the first to celebrate, with profound respect and gratitude, Her Majesty the Queen’s tireless service to us all over so many years. Thank you for supporting us here today; it is your enthusiasm that makes for the fabulous atmosphere so often mentioned as a feature of Cartmel racedays. Special mention must go to all of our Owners for entering their horses – without you there just simply would be no racing and I wish you all much luck today. It is always a pleasure meeting Owners in the Parade Ring, especially those bringing horses to Cartmel for the first time. We are, as ever, grateful to our many race sponsors and we thank and acknowledge them. Our partnerships are extremely important to us – they allow us to continue to invest in prize money, and I mention with our most sincere thanks, Hadwins, Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding, Oakmere Homes and Molson Coors today; their enduring support is simply priceless to us. We are delighted that Banks Lyon will support our prize ladies race on July 16th with a beautiful Cartier watch as a prize. We welcome two very special families today – in celebration of their loved-one’s lives; Tony Connell, whose family have celebrated his life for many years with a Memorial Race here at Cartmel, and the family of Mr Ling are celebrating their first Memorial Race, having been Hill and Stream Members for many years. Thank you for choosing the lovely surroundings of Cartmel as a place of personal commemoration. Today’s nominated Charity is Women’s Community Matters; a first visit for them to Cartmel and I am so pleased to help them raise much-needed funds. A young Charity whose aim is to make a positive difference to the lives of women and and young people in crisis in Barrow. It remains for me is to wish you good luck and I hope you enjoy your day with us.

Race Description This is a two miles and six furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 105 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100. JOCKEYS’ & TRAINERS CHALLENGES 2022 CARTMEL JOCKEYS CHALLENGE
Charlotte Jones Charlotte Jones, the first female jockey and the first conditional to finish top of the Jockeys’ Challenge table, showed her love for Cartmel once again with a sparkling hat-trick of winners on Saturday’s opening day of the 2022 season. The Barrow-born jockey has now had 41 career winners and 18 of them have been at Cartmel, making it somewhat surprising that more trainers don’t make use of her services to take a useful 5lbs off, particularly at Cartmel.
JOCKEY CHARLOTTE JONES KEVIN BROGAN JONJO O'NEILL JNR BRIAN HUGHES SEAN QUINLAN JONATHAN BEWLEY TOM CANNON CONOR O'FARRELL TOM SCUDAMORE WILLIAM SHANAHAN TOM BELLAMY CALLUM BEWLEY PETER KAVANAGH RICHIE MCLERNON
As it was, her three winners were Zumbi, Rapid Flight and Dressedforsuccess for James Moffatt taking her on to nine points and the early lead in this season’s competition Leading the chase is a new name on the board. Kevin Brogan, who was riding at Cartmel for the first time, could hardly have made a better start with two wins from his two rides on Wbee and Dee Star for trainer Gary Hanmer. Back in third place just a point adrift is Jonjo O’Neill junior, whose second to Finest View on Island Mahee in the Hadwins EBF Mares Handicap Hurdle became a three-pointer when the placings were reversed in the stewards’ room to add to a second on Antailliur in the Oakmere Homes Handicap Hurdle.

CARTMEL TRAINERS CHALLENGE throughout the whole of 2021, which underlines the importance of getting off to a flying start. Not too far behind in second place is Gary Hanmer, who collected six points with just two horses, Wbee landing the Oakmere Homes Handicap Hurdle for a second successive season and Dee Star taking the closing Racing Welfare Handicap Chase. The Cheshire trainer is now just two points short of his 2021 tally. Third place is shared by Maurice Barnes, Ulster trainer Stuart Crawford and Alan King, who all have three points, although it could have been a bit different but for a stewards decision after the Hadwins Mares Handicap Hurdle. Alan King’s Finest View was first past the post and connections thought a worthy winner, but she had hampered Island Mahee at the final flight and with only a neck between the two at the post, the stewards chose to reverse the placings. Had the placings stood, the third place for Grisbi De Berce in the Alan Bolt Memorial Novices Limited Handicap Chase would have given King third place on his own.
James Moffatt It was as if the 2021 season had never ended as Cartmel trainer James Moffatt as three winners on the opening day of the 2022 campaign took him to the top of the Trainers’ Challenge table Zumbi gave him the perfect start when the grey won the opening Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding Novices Hurdle, followed by Rapid Flight in the Molson Coors Handicap Chase and completed by Dressedforsuccess in the Banks Lyon Handicap Chase. The nine points he has accumulated is already a total that was bettered by only eight trainers 3

BETS AVAILABLE ON THIS RACE
Race Description This is a two miles and one furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 125. Leading course trainer (17-22): J Moffatt (29 wins from 204 runners, 14%) runs LADY BOWES and TOKYO GETAWAY Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): D McCain (7 wins from 25 runners, 28%) runs NORA THE XPLORER Longest Traveller: WEST END LADY trained by L Russell, Kinross, 185 miles.
