Charlotte Jones, the first female rider and the first conditional jockey to win the Cartmel Jockeys Challenge, will confirm her position as the Queen of Cartmel this afternoon when she wins the crown for a second time.

Charlotte’s 42-point haul has come from just 27 rides, exactly the same number as champion jockey Brian Hughes has taken to amass his 26 points After a quiet spell in the early part of the year, Hughes has hit his stride with a vengeance adding 15 points to his score on the last two days of action at Cartmel, a run which has taken him into second place, but still too far behind, to make it an impossible task from his four rides today.

The big two look virtually sure of finishing first and second unless Sean Quinlan can conjure up a big finish from his last four rides of Cartmel’s season as no other jockey has any pretensions of getting into the argument.

And don’t anyone try to say she has won by weight of numbers.

CARTMEL JOCKEYS CHALLENGE

It remains one of racing’s great mysteries why more trainers don’t make use of the Barrow-born jockey who has proved time and time again what a talent she is by rattling off the winners on her local course

James Moffatt

Cartmel trainer James Moffatt sets out each season to be the top trainer on his local course and, like last season, he has managed it in spades with 10 winners on the board and a massive 48 points to his credit. That tally gives him a 26 points advantage over Donald McCain, who is the only other trainer apart from Moffatt to have won the Trainers Challenge since its inception a decade ago And though McCain’s yard is bang in form with his double on Saturday being his second of a week which also included a treble at Sedgefield, that is too massive a gap to be bridged as he would need to win all seven races and have three seconds while hoping Moffatt draws a complete blank for the first time this year With just one runner it isn’t going to happen So the real scrap is for the minor honours with McCain in pole position to finish second especially as third-placed Gary Hanmer and fourth-placed George Bewley having no runners today, but Ben Haslam and Dianne Sayer could take advantage.

Donald McCain may not have won any of the races which comprised the six rounds of this season’s Hadwins Mares Only Hurdle Series, but the Cheshire trainer still walked away with the £1,000 bonus after collecting points in every race

Simply Red has been a strong part of McCain’s success story collecting 12 points in the final two rounds of the competition by finishing second to Redwood Queen in the July meeting and then taking the same spot behind impressive winner Bon Retour in the final round on Saturday

The six points for Simply Red took McCain’s total to 26 points, eight ahead of Nicky Richards, who saddled Bon Retour and Mel Rowley, who shared second place. Noel Kelly, in with a winning chance when he saddled Light Heidi in Saturday’s final round, but her third place dashed those hopes.

In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is deter mined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. Krista and Matthew’s two boys Gene and Ernie welcome racegoers to the season’s finale at Cartmel this afternoon. The boys have overcome so much since they tragically lost both their mother in October 2017 and father, six months later in April 2018.

Krista was a tireless mother, yet still found time to set up a homeless food charity in her hometown of Bolton and was at the time of her premature passing raising money for the LiverDuct Cancer Charity that was supporting Matthew’s fight against the rare bile duct cancer by running 1,000 miles in a Calendar year Both Krista and Matthew worked for British Airways in their cabin crew and maintenance team respectively but always lived life to the full. So, at 4.35pm when the horses flash past the winning post, please raise your glasses in memory of Krista and Matthew Schofield.
