OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS

Timeform Rating
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

10 Year Anniversary
We are celebrating our 10th anniversary tonight and the journey we have been on over those years. The racecourse opened its doors on 11th January 2015 and has seen some of the top horses in the world performing here before going on to Group race success around the world.
Multiple Group 1 winning filly, Highfield Princess, won our Listed Queen Charlotte Stakes as well as the Group 1, 1000 Guineas, winning filly, Billesdon Brook. The Listed Chelmer Stakes launched the career of Believing before she progressed to being one of the best sprinters in the world and selling for 3,000,000 Guineas. The Cardinal Stakes last year saw Capulet, who finished third go on to win the Listed Dee Stakes at Chester.
The list goes on and on but we would like to thank you for your support over the last 10 years and, we hope, over the years to come.

Essex County Showground
1958 - 2002
The Essex County Showground has a rich history rooted in agriculture and community. Established in 1793, the Essex Society for the Encouragement of Agriculture & Industry laid the groundwork for the county’s agricultural traditions. The first Essex Agricultural Society Show was held in Chelmsford on June 15, 1858, before becoming an annual event that toured the county.
In 1958, marking the show’s centenary, a permanent home was secured when the Society purchased 158 acres of land in Great Leighs. In 1997, entrepreneur and former showjumper John Holmes acquired the showground, hosting the Essex Show until its conclusion in 2000. Holmes then embarked on an ambitious transformation, creating a £30 million, mile-long all-weather racetrack on the site.
Today, as Chelmsford City Racecourse, the venue continues to honour its legacy as a community cornerstone, blending its historic roots with modern outreach and engagement.
2015
The racecourse opened its doors to the public, with the first race being won by the Godolphin owned Tryster, trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden by Adam Kirby.
First major music concert, when Madness played after racing to a crowd of more than 10,000
The racecourse quickly established a reputation for some of the most generous prize money in British racing and an attendance of more than 80,000
2016
World-class entertainment with concerts from Simply Red, Rick Astley and Jools Holland among others.
Staged the prestigious rearranged Greenham meeting following the decision to abandon the original Newbury fixture. This card featured three Group races and was incredibly well-received by the racing community.
2017
A trailblazing year with quality racing and great entertainment such as Boyzone.
Chelmsford City’s annual Ladies Day was a sell out, becoming a focal part of the Essex social calendar
2018
Staged 63 fixtures with a massive £5.2 million in prize money, this included the UK’s most valuable evening meeting in history and Chelmsford City Racecourse’s first ever Listed race, the Queen Charlotte Stakes.
Chelmsford City quickly broke this record just two months later with an even more valuable meeting which featured the inaugural running of the Chelmsford City Cup worth an astonishing £100,000
2019
Addition of another Listed race, the Chelmer Stakes
Co-hosted our first music festival, Clockstock, in partnership with the legendary Clockwork Orange. This sell-out festival saw 60 of dance music’s most iconic DJs and acts including Erick Morillo, Roger Sanchez, and Todd Terry come to the racecourse and deliver undoubtedly the biggest party in Essex.
2020
What looked to be a sensational sixth year at Chelmsford City Racecourse, like most the racecourse found itself disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.
The racecourse prevailed becoming one of the first to return with ‘behind closed doors’ racing, managing to successfully stage the majority of its calendar as well as preparing to open as one of the South East’s largest vaccination centres in the new year.
The Chelmer Stakes headlined the racing calendar, with course specialist Sean Levey and Happy Romance claiming victory in the thrilling six-furlong sprint. The racecourse also brought world-class music to Essex, hosting Example’s first UK performance since the pandemic in September 2021
The Cardinal Stakes, the racecourse’s premier event, featured a prestigious Conditions race with a remarkable £100,000 prize fund Additionally, to commemorate Racing Together Community Day, the racecourse proudly supported the Eden Project’s Carers Week, raising awareness of unpaid carers and the challenges they face. 2022
Chelmsford City Racecourse hosted its inaugural Remembrance Raceday on Armistice Day, honouring the Armed Forces in partnership with the Royal British Legion. Over £4,000 was raised for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, marking a memorable day of tribute and racing. 2023
2024 Present
Chelmsford City Racecourse reached new heights with enhanced races, increased prize money, and record-breaking success. Good Friday racing in 2024 set a new benchmark, achieving the highest ticket sales for any racing event that year.
The racecourse revealed its biggest music event yet for 2025, announcing a threeday festival with a daily capacity of 25,000 people. The event will feature major headliners, including Justin Timberlake, Duran Duran, and Olly Murs

CITY SELECTIONS
The vote goes to TIME PATROL, who failed to justify favouritism when fifth at Lingfield last time, but he wasn’t beaten far and that was a fair effort in the context of this race. Tony Carroll’s five-year-old competes off a 1lb lower rating here and could regain the winning thread. Comedian Leader has room for manoeuvre off her current mark, while Shades Of May could feature now entering the handicap ranks.

This Farh returned from a 137-day break with a good effort when hitting the crossbar over 7f at Lingfield last week and he holds an obvious chance. However, he could come out second best to SOLDIERS STAR, who finished a close-up third over 7f at Wolverhampton last month and shaped as if this drop back in trip would be a good move. If the son of Soldier’s Call can reproduce the form of his debut second over this distance, then he may prove very hard to beat. Best Of All is the pick of the remainder

CARLTON accounted for Lumberjack by just under a length when successfully completing a C&D double last time, retaining his unbeaten record since joining the James Owen yard. The five-year-old was worth a lot more than the winning margin suggests on that occasion and he has lots in his favour as he bids for a hat-trick off 2lb higher. Alex The Great finished a respectable third at Southwell on his most recent outing and should go well off an unchanged mark, while Black Smoke is another to note.

SMARTER
CARLTON has been resurgent upon joining the James Owen yard, landing back-to-back C&D handicaps last month, and he’s expected to make a bold bid to bring up a quick-fire hat-trick. Black Smoke and Foinix are others to consider with Mamdoh another worth a look given he has fewer miles on the clock than most.

A CELEBRATION OF WOMEN ON AND OFF THE TRACK
Racing has long been considered a men’s sport, but in recent years, it is the women who have truly taken the reins, and rightly so. Ladies Day at the races has historically been synonymous with grace, style, and a celebration of women in fashion and status. What once served as a welcoming day for women has now evolved into a platform where they shine both in their attire and in the saddle.
Fast forward to 2025, and the spotlight is no longer solely on the elegant attendees; it is equally shared with the fearless and talented female jockeys who compete at the highest levels of the sport.
To honour this evolution, in 2024, Chelmsford City Racecourse proudly launched a multi-channel campaign that showcases the remarkable journeys of some of the most inspirational women on and off the track.
CHARLOTTE BREW
The Trailblazer
Among these trailblazers is Essex born Charlotte Brew, who made history in 1977 as the first female jockey to ride in the Grand National. Her courage and determination broke barriers and set the stage for future generations. In her earlier years, Charlotte competed in point-to-point events at the Essex County Showground, the very site that would later evolve into Chelmsford City Racecourse as we know it today
For our 2024 Ladies Day, Chelmsford City Racecourse was proud to collaborate with the renowned national brand Fenwick to celebrate remarkable women making a difference in our county. From inspiring cancer survivors to dedicated carers, we had the privilege of recognising their incredible contributions with thoughtful gifts as a token of our appreciation.
HAYLEY TURNER
The Pioneer
Another icon is Hayley Turner OBE, a trailblazer in British horseracing who recently celebrated her historic 1,000th win right here at Chelmsford City Racecourse. Riding Tradesman to victory, Hayley became the first female jockey in the UK to achieve this remarkable milestone.
ALL FEMALE RACE
Ladies Day 2025
To celebrate the fearless and talented female jockeys competing at the highest levels of the sport, Chelmsford City Racecourse is proud to announce an all-female jockey race as a highlight of this year’s Ladies Day This special event underscores our commitment to showcasing the incredible skill and determination of women in racing.
Our Commitment to Horsemen in 2025
Since opening in 2015, the racecourse has always had an intense passion for supporting the owners, trainers, jockeys and stable staff who make our sport happen. In 2025, the racecourse will again commit in excess of £3m prize money featuring some of the most valuable Listed races in the country as well as topping the tables for a range of Class 5 and 6, highlighting our commitment to supporting racing at every level.
We also recognise that support goes beyond prize money and we are excited to upgrade facilities, continue to offer our facilities to trainers free-of-charge, improve communication and extensively support industry charities including Retraining of Racehorse (RoR) and Injured Jockeys Fund (IJF).

THE OUTLAW was heavily backed on his handicap debut over 7f at Southwell last week but showed signs of greenness when overhauled by a progressive filly inside the final furlong. However, the son of New Bay was clear of the rest on that occasion and looks worth persevering with, given tonight’s additional furlong could draw further improvement. Khutulun, a 7f winner here on her penultimate start, looks the chief danger, although Majestic Heights is notable with cheekpieces added.

He’s one to be interested in turned out quickly and earns the vote ahead of Specified who has shaped better than recent form figures would suggest. Khutulun, who was in good form when last seen, is another in the mix. Rumseg also commands a market check on his handicap debut.

Since opening our doors we have focused on building solid community relationships, through events, fundraising, and volunteering for Racing Together’s Community Day. Our engagement includes working with local schools, children, vulnerable groups and the Armed forces, offering opportunities for people to experience racing.
Partnering with Racing to School, we’ve hosted educational days for over 180 children, and our family fun days have created lasting memories. These events have enabled the racecourse to support charities, donating over £33,000 to beneficiaries Help for Heroes, Havens Hospices and Essex & Herts Air Ambulance.
In our fourth year of hosting inclusive initiatives like Autism in Racing we’ve created experiences for vulnerable families, and in 2024 we held our second Remembrance raceday as part of our commitment to the Armed Forces. Since August 2023 we have proudly raised over £12,000 for the Armed Forces donating to the Royal British Legion and local charity Blesma.
Our community initiatives have been proudly recognised nationally, as finalists in the RCA Showcase Awards for Diversity & Inclusion and Racing Together Community categories in 2023 and 2024

We will continue our success and fulfill our ambitions with a ‘think outside of the box’ approach stretching our imagination to come up with new and unique ways to turn our ambitions into reality.

CITY SELECTIONS
Solanna relished the step up in distance when landing the spoils over 1m3f at Kempton 22 days ago and he must enter calculations in his current mood. However, a return to 1m2f and a 5lb higher mark may leave John Butler’s charge vulnerable and AUGUSTE LUMIERE edges the vote. The four-year-old is only 2lb higher than his neck second stable debut over this C&D last month and, with the third subsequently winning, he may be ahead of the handicapper Boasty is also of interest in a reapplied visor
