FOREWORD
I am delighted to welcome you all to latest edition of the Point-to-Point Pony Racing planner which covers the forthcoming 2025 season. Forty-seven fixtures spread across the calendar and the country will provide opportunities for our most inexperienced riders and ponies to put a toe in the water through to the more hardened campaigners who will doubtless be chasing points and titles. As ever the venues and infra structure is generously provided by Hunt Point-to-Point Committees and the administrative backup stems from our own hardworking and dedicated band of volunteers that comprise the PRA Point-to-Point Pony Racing Committee. Clearly the enthusiasm and commitment of both the above is essential in our ability to keep the fixture list structured to ensure competitions are available nationally from January to June and I would ask that everyone who takes part in the coming months makes a particular point of seeking out and thanking everyone involved with the provision of the day.
2024 heralded some challenging weather conditions and several meetings were lost however in general races filled well and as ever competition at the top end remained intense. Congratulations to Lowan Cruise Mills and his support team who managed to become only the second participant to win both Championships, a feat that requires considerable parental dedication. Whilst it’s important to celebrate individual success, we are equally thrilled to see a steady stream of newcomers enjoying an early taste of riding at speed in competition; from these will come future stars as jockeys but also potential applicants to work within the Racing industry. We are fortunate to receive excellent support in terms of Sponsorship and Grants from the wider Racing community and it is obviously very much welcomed when those who have been enthused move on to find a career within the sport.
There remains an ongoing challenge to attract more young people to come and sample pony racing; clearly even within the equestrian world there are a multiplicity of disciplines all competing for participants, so it is vital those currently involved, do their best to promote and champion this sector. If anyone wants to arrange rallies, visits to trainers or simply go and have a chat with local practitioners then please do get in touch, it is well documented that the most successful route to encouraging newcomers stems from enthusiastic parents operating in local areas. Our hardworking Committee members are always ready to assist and certainly very happy to have extra voluntary help and support.
As ever huge thanks to the executive team and all those who contribute to our sphere of racing, without such widespread support it simply would not happen. I wish you all a very happy, successful and fun few months.
Mike Felton Chairman, Point-to-Point Pony Racing
THANK YOU
A massive thank you goes to all those on the Point-to-Point Pony Racing Committee, without whom, pony racing really wouldn’t be as successful as it is. Those who make it all happen are:
Devon & Cornwall – Kelvin Heard & Team Wessex – Kim Tripp & Team
South East – Keely Harrison
East Anglia – Sara Wallwin & Team
West Mercian Area – Sophie Day, Ruth Hurley & Team
The 2021 Racecourse Series
South South Midlands – Christina Dunlop & Team
Midlands – Dido Cotton & Team
Northern – Lesley Walby & Team
What an impossible year 2020 has been and we are sorry not to have been able to stage a Racecourse Series. However, we are full of hope we will be able to stage a one in 2021. The Fixture list will be available to view on the PRA website once it has been agreed. (www.ponyracingauthority.co.uk).
Wales – Sarah Ellis, Beth Williams & Team
We will be introducing some new races for ponies measuring 146 cms & under. Keep an eye on the website as these will be framed similar to our novice series which will also continue next season.
Mike & Lucy Felton
PRA – Caroline Hutsby, Verity Green & Lucinda Campbell-Dutton
The Racecourse Series is as much about learning as it is about winning. Each fixture is overseen by a PRA Steward and BHA Jockey Coach giving you the chance to ride at some of the UK’s top racecourses.
All Hunts and Clubs who welcome pony racing at their fixtures are also to be applauded and thanked.
Jockeys are nominated by the stewards and coaches at each fixture for the Rose Bengal Awards and the George Crawford Bursary. Effort and achievement are rewarded as much as winning.
So, if as a pony racer OR parent, you have a spare five minutes on the day of the races, please go and find the point-to-point secretary and / or the chairman and show your appreciation by passing on a word of thanks.
The Racecourse Series is open to anyone who is 11 years old and older and who has ridden in three Point-to-Point pony races.
We look forward to seeing you in 2021.

A QUICK GUIDE ON HOW TO GET TO THE STARTING LINE
For detailed information please go to the Pony Racing Authority’s (PRA) website – www.ponyracingauthority.co.uk.
In order to enter and run in a PtP Pony Race, the combination of a pony & rider needs to QUALIFY and REGISTER
QUALIFICATION
The Pony and Rider as a combination must have done one of the following since 1st July 2024:
• Been placed first to third in a Racecourse Series Pony Race
• Passed an accredited PRA/PC Training Day or PRA Advanced Day. (Details of which are on the website).
• Been out with a recognised pack of Hounds, Draghounds or Bloodhounds a minimum four times and fairly hunted,
• Have attended four working Pony Club Rallies, one of which includes jumping the Pony
• Passed a minimum Level 3 Training Day at the British Racing School, National Horseracing College or Scottish Racing Academy OR
• Completed 10 PRA Races (including PC Open Races) since 1st January 2022
REGISTRATION
Following qualification, the next step is to register which can be done online. (www.ponyracingauthority.co.uk).
Registration of a Rider is a step-by-step process. All parents/guardians wishing to register a rider must create an account. Click the relevant link which can be found on the righthand side of the home page of the website “JOIN / SIGN IN”.
Registration of a pony is via the “user’s” account. Click the tab at the top right of the “home” screen to access the account. Click on the relevant link and follow the instructions. More than one pony can be registered. If the pony has been registered previously, its name will appear as you type it in. If this is the case, click on the name and follow the instructions.
Information needed to register a pony:
• Photographs of the pony’s passport - the front page, the identity page and ALL the vaccination pages. Please make sure that no photograph is larger than 2MB.
• The Joint Measurement Board Height number (if required - please refer to the regulations).
• The pony’s passport number and microchip number.
• The address where the pony is stabled.
ALL registrations (Rider & Pony) must be completed by 12-noon on a FRIDAY in order to be eligible to enter and ride the following weekend. Once registered BOTH Rider and Pony have to be APPROVED by the PRA Steward. Once approved the combination can be entered in a race. If the Friday 12-noon registration deadline is missed it will roll forward to the following week so no entries can be made for that weekend. Registrations will not be approved if the information is incomplete or incorrect.
ENTERING A RACE
Entries are made online and in the main close at 8pm on the Sunday prior to the weekend on which the fixture is due to be run. However please refer to the relevant page for the fixture you wish to enter as some may differ if they are running on a weekday. (LATE ENTRIES ARE NEVER ACCEPTED).
PtP fixtures are listed on the PRA website under the “Fixtures Section”. To enter click the “Enter” tab for the fixture so as to see the race types that have been framed. Decide which race is to be entered and follow the instructions. Once payment is made a confirmation email is sent to the registered email address and the details will appear in the “User” account. There is a maximum of three pony races at any one fixture; where only two races are framed, one may divide at the discretion of the organiser if significant entries are received. It is the responsibility of those entering to ensure the combination meets the conditions of the race entered.
2025 PTP PONY RACING – RACES TYPES
MAIDEN Race
For Combinations, who have qualified as per the PRA Regulations and who have NEVER WON any race. Neither rider nor pony can have taken part in the Racecourse Series.
NOVICE RIDER Race
For qualified Riders who at the start of the season haven’t WON an OPEN Point-to-Point or an OPEN Pony Club Race, a “NOVICE RIDER” (Point-to-Point) race nor an INTERMEDIATE Race and who have never taken part in the Racecourse series.
For qualified Ponies which haven’t WON or been placed second in any OPEN Point-to-Point, OPEN Pony Club or OPEN Racecourse race since 1st January 2023. Combinations must have qualified as per the PRA Regulations.
INTERMEDIATE Race
For combinations who haven’t WON or been placed second in an OPEN Point Point-to-Point or an OPEN Pony Club Race and who haven’t WON more than TWO INTERMEDIATE races
Riders can’t have been placed first, second or third in any race in the Racecourse Series nor WON an OPEN Point-to-Point or an OPEN Pony Club Race. The Rider must have qualified the pony as per the PRA Regulations.
OPEN Race
CONDITIONS Race
This can be either a:
• Maiden
• Novice Riders race
• Intermediate
For example: The “Heythrop” MAIDEN CONDITIONS race
For riders and ponies, who have qualified as per the PRA Regulations and who have NEVER WON any race. Combinations can’t have taken part in the Racecourse Series.
For combinations who have qualified with a Pony Club or Hunt within the South Midlands Area
The race is defined as a Maiden race so if the combination wins, they are then out of Maiden races.
RACE FACTS
The Safety Factor (SF) (maximum number allowed to run in a race) for PtP pony races is 10.
Balloting – If the SF is exceeded where a race is NOT dividing there will be a ballot. If notification of a non-runner is given then there will be an opportunity for the reserve(s) to run.
The following balloting procedure will be adopted, if necessary, when more than 10 entries are received after which a maximum of 10 entries along with 3 nominated reserves will be advertised following the closing deadline as per Regulation 28 (i).
At fixtures run on the first weekend of the season, those closest to the venue as per their PRA membership registered post code will be given priority. For the remainder of the season, should a ballot be required, priority will be given in the following order:
1) First time Riders.
2) Those riders who have had the least number of runs
3) Those closest to the venue as per their PRA membership registered postcode. A race may be divided at the discretion of the organisers.
Reserves - If a race is oversubscribed and isn’t divided a maximum of 3 reserves will be advertised. If notification of a non-runner is given then there will be an opportunity for the reserve(s) to run.
Divisions – if a race is to be divided, the divisions are listed by an independent person and advertised on the website. All entries are published on the website by 9am on the Monday following entries closing.
WHAT DO I NEED? –
The following photo is also a good checking tool.
For detailed information go to the website and click on “Get Racing” / “What will I need”. There are however some things you MUST NOT forget:
• Your medical armband (which must be worn when mounted)
• Your pony’s passport
• Your PRA Medical Book (you will have been sent one when you first became a member of the PRA)
• A neckstrap AND/OR martingale (and breast plate or breast girth if in a racing saddle)
• Reins which are buckled or stitched and not too long. It is a good idea to tie a knot in the end of them too.
• The correct footwear depending on the type of irons you are using.
Details are included within the Regulations book as to what is required and what is not permitted.
RACEDAY
Prior to the day, details of timings and where to go will be sent via email. Timings will include those for the briefing, declarations, course walk (which is mandatory and if missed will mean you won’t be permitted to race), the race and prize giving.
Arrival – It’s important to go straight to the designated area in a timely fashion. Pony racing has a “window of time” in which to run at a point-to-point so it’s important to arrive in good time and should you be running late then call the organiser to let them know. Ponies MUST be led in a bridle or chiffney when being led round the lorry park.
Briefing / Declarations – It’s usual the briefing and declarations are done prior to the course walk so the relevant kit needs to on hand to be checked (Back Protector, Skull Cap, Medical Armband, Medical Book and Passport).
Course Walk – Parents or any other persons are not allowed on the course walk other than those declared to run and the person overseeing it.
Getting ready – To ride in PtP pony races there is no minimum or maximum weight for riders. However, riders and ponies must complement each other with regard to size. Should an official on the day be concerned a pony is too small for the rider the parents may be approached on the day or it will be reported to the PRA.
At some Point-to-Point meetings the riders will be asked to weigh out / in. Where asked the organiser on the day will let the riders know what to do and where to go. When a rider weighs out and finishes in the first four then they must weigh in.
Once back from the course walk, Riders should get changed into their racing kit and present themselves in the paddock at the appointed time (making sure they have their medical armband on).
The pony must be presented tacked up to be checked, which will either be done prior to going into the paddock or in the paddock itself.
Children under 12 are not permitted to lead up ponies, this should be done by an adult with another adult accompanying the rider to the paddock where possible.
A bell will ring when riders are to mount after which they will leave the paddock when instructed and make their way onto the track. Generally, there will be a hunt escort which the riders must stay behind and follow. Ponies are not allowed to be led to the start Parents are not allowed to the start.
The Start – The starter will check riders and ponies are present by calling out the numbers. Each combination needs to shout “sir” upon hearing their number. Girths will be checked by the assistant starter. It is IMPERATIVE the children listen to the instructions given. The starter will make them aware of the starting procedure and what to do if there’s a false start. Riders must be respectful to the starter and fellow riders. Anyone deemed not to have been, will be reported to the PRA.
After the Race – Those placed 1st – 4th return to the paddock. Those remaining go to their vehicles to wash off / cool down and put away ponies. If weighing in, then the relevant instructions will be given, if not the first four will be asked to head back to their vehicles to do the same.
Prize giving – It is important to arrive in a timely fashion and everyone must attend regardless of where they finished in the race. It is also an opportunity where parents and children can thank those who have put on and overseen the races, all of which have done so on a voluntary basis.
Finally, don’t forget to return your number cloth and anything else you may have handed in before leaving.
You can follow the Point-to-Point Pony Racing and PRA pages on Facebook as well as on Instagram (@pointopointpony and @ponyracingauthority) and @ponyracinggb on twitter.
