Official race programme £3.00 SOUTHERN CRANES &
MONDAY 27TH JANUARY 2025
Sadly, we have lost our last two racedays to waterlogging and frost, which was both disappointing and frustrating for everyone, but am pleased to welcome you to The Southern Crane & Access Raceday. A belated Happy New Year and we wish you all an enjoyable day.
I would like to thank our Partners; BetGoodwin and Southern Cranes and Access Ltd for their tremendous support throughout the 2024/25 Season, along with today’s sponsors, Prince Albert Pub, More Radio, Southern Cranes & Access and Tysers. We wish you all have a tremendous day.
We have a cracking 6 race card today, with 43 runners declared worth over £52k of prize money. Our main race today is the 5th race, The Tysers Handicap Steeplechase (Class 4) worth £11,000 with 6 going to post. The renewal last year was won by Morfee, ridden by James Best and trained by Seamus Mullins, beating Sublime Heights. The renewal this year looks very competitive and again has last year’s winner Morfee looking to reclaim the prize once again. We wish everyone the best of luck.
Our Retired Racehorse Stable has been very well received and today we are lucky to have Bright Forecast. Bright Forecast aka Sunny is a 2014 bay gelding by Arcadia out of Check the Forecast. Trained by Ben Pauling and owned by The Aldaniti Partnership, Sunny only ran under rules 4 times, winning twice, and being placed 2nd and 3rd in his other races, bringing home £33,000 in prize money. In retirement Sunny proves to be an excellent Show jumper and competes in this sphere and Arena Eventing. Pop down and give him a polo and a pat. The horse is owned by our racecourse ambassador Alex Embiricos and she will be in attendance to answer any questions you may have. Alex’s mother and father owned the 1981 Grand National winner Aldaniti.
Our next two fixtures will be Monday 10th February and Monday 24th February so if you are thinking of booking tickets or hospitality for either day make sure you visit our website or contact one of our team now.
On Monday 10th February we will now have a 7-race card as we have successfully been able to reschedule the BetGoodwin Sussex National. This race, which was unfortunately abandoned due to adverse weather conditions on 5th January, will still carry the same exciting prize fund of £35,000. This illustrates that Plumpton are committed to ensuring that this premier race retains its prestige, and we look forward to welcoming both competitors and racegoers to Plumpton Racecourse for what promises to be an exciting and memorable day of racing.
Craig Staddon Chief Executive
Looking ahead, make sure you plan for our Easter Festival (Premier raceday) which will be held on Sunday 20th and Monday 21st April. By booking now you will secure our best ticket prices as this is a popular racing weekend with both tickets and hospitality always in high demand.
Have a great day at Plumpton, Heart Of The Community.
Best wishes

Bridle - A piece of tack that fits over a horse’s head and to which the bit and reins are attached.
Bumper - Also known as a National Hunt Flat race, this race has no obstacles. Used as a way to give horses race experience before tackling hurdles and fences.
Chase - A race run over fences.
Cheekpieces - A form of headgear which consists of pieces of sheepskin placed on either side of the bridle and performs a similar job as blinkers in helping the horse to concentrate.
Clerk of the course - The person responsible for the overall management of a racecourse on a raceday.
Fences - The type of obstacle jumped during a chase race.
Furlong - A unit of measurement. A furlong is an eighth of a mile or a little more than 201 meters.

Tongue-tie - A strap used to tie down a horse’s tongue to prevent the tongue getting over the bit which affects a horse’s breathing.
Turn of foot - A term to describe marked acceleration during a race.
Under starter’s orders - Before a race, the starter brings the field of horses into order to prepare them for the start of the race

GOLAN LOOP was running with credit before being brought down in the latter stages at Ascot 38 days ago and this looks a suitable opportunity for him to open his account under Rules. Warren Greatrex’ gelding had previously finished third over this C&D and he rates as the one to beat. The biggest threat may emerge from Serious Challenge, who can build on his fifth-placed hurdles bow at Huntingdon earlier this month, ahead of Big Bert.
SELECTION: Golan Loop
Danger: Serious Challenge
Although a 12-race maiden, SMART CASUAL has proved a model of consistency throughout the past year and compensation could be on the cards. The seven-year-old arrives on the back of a solid second at Lingfield and a similar performance may prove sufficient. Diplomatic Ash shouldn’t be inconvenienced by today’s shorter trip and he must enter the reckoning in these calmer waters, while first-time blinkers could spark some improvement in Extraordinary Man.
SELECTION: Smart Casual
3
Danger: Diplomatic Ash
Having opened his account in good style at Southwell last month, Land Of Moon must enter the reckoning in his follow-up bid. However, a 7lb winner’s penalty will make life tougher for the son of Spanish Moon and RISK IT ALL is preferred. The four-year-old looked a likely improver on his third-placed hurdles bow at Kempton 31 days ago and he could take advantage of a handy 13lb weight-for-age allowance. Rogue Tornado is also noted.
SELECTION: Risk It All
Danger: Land Of Moon
4 River Tyne reverts to hurdles on a 5lb lower mark than when landing a Fontwell chase on Boxing Day, but she is winless from six previous outings over timber and slight preference is for SQUIGGLES. A 5lb rise for a neck success over Doncaster’s extended 3m last month may seem a little harsh, but James Owen’s lightly-raced mare has scope for improvement. C&D winner Midnightreflection showed a bit more promise when not beaten too far at Market Rasen 10 days ago.
SELECTION: Squiggles
5
Danger: River Tyne
Invincible Nao is very interesting now upped in trip and the 2m5f winner has shaped as though it may suit, but the safer option appears to be C&D winner NORTHERN POET. Nick Gifford’s 10-year-old returned from seven months off and wind surgery to chase home a progressive sort over this track and trip last month, and he can improve for that pipe-opener. Whydah Gally may be best of the remainder off a tumbling mark.
SELECTION: Northern Poet
Danger: Invincible Nao
Eliza Dolittle must be respected following her game success over the extended 2m4f here last month, but she’s 3lb higher now and a drop in trip may not be ideal either. With that in mind, the vote goes to TARA ITI, who has been knocking on the door of late and has two C&D wins to his name, including one off 5lb higher than his current mark. This looks competitive, though, with Grasshopper Time, Gorcombe Moonshine and Rapid Mission also in with a shout.
SELECTION: Tara Iti
Danger: Eliza Dolittle

Lightly-raced Squiggles and prolific chaser River Tyne will both need to be ridden aggressively to bring their stamina into the mix and that could play into the hands of live outsider GATA BAN who has shown signs of promise on his last two runs and will be nursed into the race by a jockey who excels under patient tactics. Fortuna Ligna and Midnightreflection have both operated at a higher level than this, and a revival from either would not come as a surprise.
