FESTIVAL TRIALS DAY SATURDAY 30 JANUARY 2021

Santini, 2020 winner of The Paddy Power ‘45 SLEEPS TO CHELTENHAM’ Cotswold Steeple Chase

THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU

Welcome to Festival Trials Day, our final raceday before four days of fantastic racing at The Festival™ in March. Today we are treated to seven high class races to whet the appetite for just over six weeks time. With the Paddy Power '45 Sleeps To Cheltenham' Cotswold Chase (Grade 2) taking centre stage, we are likely to see candidates for Jump racing’s greatest steeple chase take their chance. Last year’s winner, Santini went on to only find Al Boum Photo a neck too strong in The Festival™’s Blue Riband event. With three more Grade 2s on the day, the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle often provides us with exciting horses who will return to the Home of Jump Racing in March, and of course, the Paddy Power Cleeve Hurdle has been won for the past two years by Cheltenham favourite, Paisley Park. We look forward to seeing this year’s contests. As well as the racing on offer today, Paddy Power will be making one of their lucky customers a millionaire. The Paddy Power Millionaire Handicap Chase is the culmination of a campaign, which concluded at the end of 2020. To find out more about this exciting competition, please head to our website. We wish all the finalists the best of luck. As ever, out thanks go to today’s sponsors; Paddy Power, Ballymore, Timeform, JCB and SSS Super Alloys. We are extremely grateful for their continued support and hope that they are able to enjoy the fantastic racing on offer. Although you are not able to join us on course today, we hope you enjoy the first class coverage by ITV Racing and Racing TV. We thank you for your continued support this season and look forward to being able to welcome you back on course once it is safe to do so. Take care, and best wishes, MARTIN ST QUINTON Chairman

BETTING EXPLAINED — Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number. — Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet. — ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. — ‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet. — Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet. — Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience. — Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

A DAY AT THE RACES EXPLAINED — Explore and familiarise yourself with the racecourse. — Find out the time of the first race in the racecard. Races are about 30 minutes apart and provide a natural focus for your day. — Visit the Parade Ring around 20 minutes before each race. This is your chance to see the horses up-close. Look for signs of their fitness and attitude. A glossy coat, pricked ears and alert nature are considered good. — Watch at least one race by the railings, as close to the finishing post as you can get.

RACEHORSES EXPLAINED — Jump horses are generally sturdier and bigger than Flat horses. Key attributes are endurance and strength. — Flat horses are lighter and more elegant for shorter, faster races. — They use a different set of muscles, so muscle definition varies just like in human athletes. — On average, Jump horses race - or ‘travel’ - at 30mph. — Flat horses are faster at 35mph and the best exceed 40mph during a race.

PAISLEY PARK underlined that he’s still the best in this division when rattling home to land the Long Walk at Ascot and, in the absence of Thyme Hill, he faces a much simpler task, so he’s an obvious choice. Itchy Feet has the class to pose a threat if he can replicate the form he’s shown over fences and Decor Irlandais still seems to be improving, so he’s another interesting contender.
