THE APRIL MEETING THURSDAY 15TH APRIL 2021
Havingagoodtime, winner of the 2019 Junior Jumpers Fillies’ Juvenile Handicap Hurdle, ridden by Rachael Blackmore and trained by Henry De Bromhead.
THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU
Welcome to Day Two of the April Meeting, our final raceday of the season for professional trainers and jockeys. Today features an all-mares’ card, something that we are very proud to host here at Cheltenham. The seven–race card is set to provide top quality action throughout the afternoon. We would like to take the time to wish trainer Colin Tizzard a wonderful retirement at the end of the season. We look forward to welcoming Colin back on course as he continues to support his son Joe who will now hold the license. Colin has had many brilliant moments with us, from the muchloved Cue Card to the impressive Thistlecrack but one of Colin’s most memorable days here was when Native River came storming up the hill to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2018, under the recently retired, Richard Johnson. We would also like to wish Richard all the best in his next chapter after announcing this month that he would be retiring with immediate effect. We wish him the best of luck out of the saddle and he will be hugely missed here at Cheltenham. With two Cheltenham Gold Cups, and multiple Grade 1s to his name, since his very first Cheltenham Festival winner in 1999 it has always been a pleasure to welcome Richard on course. Today will also mark Charlie Mann’s final runners here as a trainer. Charlie has trained over 700 winners in his career and we wish him a very enjoyable retirement. We hope to see Colin, Charlie and Richard back here very soon. As ever, our thanks go to our race sponsors today, Irish Thoroughbred Marketing, British EBF, Catesby Estates, NAF, Racing TV and Spreadex Sports Betting. We thank you for your continued support and hope you enjoy the afternoon of sport. It is a delight to be able to welcome owners back on course today. It was a great shame not to have you with us in March, so we hope you all enjoy your day and wish you the best of luck. We look forward to being able to welcome spectators back on course once it is safe to do so, but until then we hope you enjoy all the coverage on Racing TV, and our website. Take care and best wishes, MARTIN ST QUINTON Chairman

THE GLANCING QUEEN didn’t enjoy the rub of the green but still posted a very good fifth in the Dawn Run Mares’ Hurdle here and can rack up win number three of the season in this less exacting company. SCHOLASTIC arrives on the back of an improved showing at Fairyhouse and wouldn’t be the only Irish hurdler to have been let in lightly this year, so she’s a fairly confident selection ahead of the likeable Fiveandtwenty, who fared as well as could be expected behind Monmiral at Aintree last week. RACHAEL BLACKMORE A JUMP JOCKEY LIKE NO OTHER By Ben Cox At the beginning of March, Rachael Blackmore was already well established as the leading female jockey in Ireland, having enjoyed a dozen Grade 1 victories and with three winners at The Festival™ supporting WellChild to her name. However, what was to follow over the next few weeks transferred her to another stratosphere and one never approached by any other female jockey in the history of Jump racing. The mare Honeysuckle had already provided Blackmore with a Grade 1 Cheltenham victory when landing the Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle at The Festival™ in 2020. Honeysuckle enabled the 31-year-old to become the first female jockey to win the Grade 1 Unibet Champion Hurdle as she easily justified 11-10 favouritism in hurdling’s premier prize. More was to follow at The Festival™, with the jockey enjoying a Grade 1 double on day two courtesy of Bob Olinger in the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle and Sir Gerhard in the Weatherbys Champion Bumper. That double made Blackmore hot favourite to take the leading jockey honours at Jump racing’s four-day extravaganza and by the end of Friday she duly justified that opinion by adding the Grade 1 Ryanair Chase on Allaho, the Grade 1 JCB Triumph Hurdle on Quilixios and the Grade 2 Parnell Properties Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle on Telmesomethinggirl to take her tally to six winners for the week – two clear of her closest rival Jack Kennedy.
It was so nearly another first for Blackmore at Cheltenham as her mount A Plus Tard only found Minella Indo too good in the Grade 1 WellChild Cheltenham Gold Cup. Ever the perfectionist, it was the one that got way that Blackmore reflected on after The Festival™, particularly as she had the chance to ride Minella Indo. She commented: “It was my decision and I chose the wrong one and it happens. But I’m not going to take anything away from Minella Indo, who was the best horse on the day. “Gold Cups don’t go away. The replays will be on at award shows and at next year’s meetings and it’ll always be when the ball didn’t bounce right - but I had an incredible week.” Aintree’s Randox Grand National Festival followed on three weeks after Cheltenham and Blackmore was back in action again. Day one got off to a good start as she partnered Me Too Please to success in the Grade 2 Goffs UK Mares’ Bumper. The big race itself, the Randox Grand National, was the first of Jump racing’s major prizes to have had female participation with Charlotte Brew partnering Barony Fort back in 1977, although the closest a female jockey had come to winning was third (Katie Walsh on Seabass in 2012). That all changed in 2021 as Blackmore partnered Minella Times to a comprehensive six and a half-length success. Minella Times is from the yard of Henry de Bromhead, Blackmore’s greatest supporter who said after the famous Aintree victory: “She’s brilliant, isn’t she? We are just lucky to have her and I think they broke the mould after her. She’s tough out, she’s brilliant just what more can you say? We are very lucky to have her. “You can see since she joined us how we’ve gone from strength to strength with her, she’s a fantastic rider, great team player and just a lovely person to work with.” Tennis Coach, Judy Murray, a participant at Aintree’s Grand Women’s Summit in 2021, perfectly summarised Blackmore’s achievement when she said: “Rachael Blackmore’s Grand National win on Minella Times at Aintree on Saturday was an iconic moment for sport, not just for racing. Almost nine million people watched her sensational performance which I’m sure will inspire young girls up and down the country and show them that anything is possible. “Rachael is not only skilful, determined and brave, she is breaking down barriers and shining a very bright spotlight on women in sport.” Last word must go to Blackmore herself, who once remarked: “I can’t say I was too worried about the female thing deep down myself.” Her achievements this season bear that out – they are phenomenal for any jockey for any jockey in the long history of this great sport.

PLAY SMARTER
Some fairly useful prospects on show, not least WIND FROM THE WEST who hails from the family of Long Run and made a promising start when third in a Taunton bumper last month. Both Game On For Glory and Signal Point have better days ahead of them too though and should ensure Warren Greatrex’s mare doesn’t have things all her own way.
