THE JOCKEY CLUB
WELCOMES YOU
Welcome back to the Home of Jump Racing for the second day of The Showcase, our opening race meeting of the 2021/22 season. It is an exciting time of year for us as the Jump season begins to pick up momentum and we look forward to what the next few months have in store. It was wonderful to welcome racegoers through the gates yesterday, and we are delighted you are able to join us today. This iconic sporting arena has not been the same without you all, and we look forward to hearing that welcome sound of the Cheltenham roar once more. In line with Public Health England’s guidance, we recommend that racegoers wear a facemask when indoors or areas they are unable to socially distance. We have plenty of hand sanitising stations available and encourage you all to use them frequently while on course. We appreciate your support with this. Today we will also pay tribute to the NHS for their heroic efforts to vaccinate the local area, and will host 780 people who have worked towards providing COVID vaccines to the general public in the town.. The local centre based at the East Fire Station has been serving the entire town and the combined effort of around 1,200 people has seen 190,000 vaccines given out to date in the area. Each guest of the course will be able to enjoy a top-class day of racing which will include a race named in their honour - the NHS Vaccinating Heroes Conditional Jockeys Handicap Hurdle. We would like to say a huge thank you to those who have contributed to the ongoing national effort during the pandemic and wish them a wonderful day. This week marks Racing Welfare’s Stable Staff week, and I would like to take this time to thank all the brilliant stable staff for their hard work and wish them all a fantastic two days with us. Alongside a huge range of events and activities taking place across the UK this week, Racing Welfare have been presenting four Lifetime in Racing Awards. The awards are open to all racing industry staff who have worked in the sport for 30 years or more and we’d like to congratulate all winners, and wish all of Racing Welfare’s guests a wonderful day. Ahead of our first race on the card today we are delighted to be hosting two pony races. Pony racing is a fundamental pathway into our sport and we are looking forward to seeing plenty of future stars on the track today. We wish the young riders the best of luck. Our thanks go to today’s sponsors Masterson Holdings, Pertemps, Racing Welfare and the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars. We are also pleased to welcome 888sport as our Official Betting Partner for this meeting who will be sponsoring two races on the card today. We wish all our sponsors and their guests a great day with us. We wish you all a very enjoyable day’s racing and look forward to seeing you back here for The November Meeting in three weeks’ time.

PLAY SMARTER
This lacks the strength in depth of some Cheltenham handicaps. SAMBA DANCER arrives firmly on the up for Fergal O’Brien, and with a good-value conditional taking off a valuable 3lb, the hat-trick may well be on. If there’s a runner with the scope to be much better than their mark it’s Samarrive, with Byzantine Empire, a stablemate of the selection, also of interest.

A small-field and one which STEPNEY CAUSEWAY may be able to dominate. Dan Skelton’s inmate quickly developed into a useful juvenile last term and may not yet have reached the ceiling of his ability. Tritonic was below par in the Triumph Hurdle when last seen but retains potential judged on his impressive Adonis success. I Like To Move It is the sort to improve markedly and merits respect, also.

PLAY SMARTER
OSCAR ELITE completed a cracking novice hurdling season with a third in the Sefton at Aintree 6 months ago and he’s very much the type to do better in this sphere, so he’s marginally preferred to Does He Know, who made an impressive debut over fences when successful at Chepstow earlier in the month. Roi de Dubai has plenty of experience and should put up a bold bid from the front.

TOP DOG found only one too good in a competitive Fairyhouse bumper 6 months ago and now makes his first outing for a stable that’s been amongst the winners, so he takes narrow preference over Nicky Henderson’s newcomer Swapped. Shuil Donn, like the selection, has moved yards after an encouraging start in Ireland, so he’s another one who could take a hand in what should prove to be a strong race.
