CHAIR’S WELCOME WELCOME TO DAY ONE OF THE 2022 BOODLES MAY FESTIVAL - CITY DAY Good afternoon, I’m thrilled to be able to welcome you back to Chester Racecourse for a momentous day – the Boodles May Festival City Day! Not only does this fixture mark the beginning of our 2022 racing season here at the world’s oldest racecourse, it’s also the first day of our famous Boodles May Festival, which hasn’t been held with a crowd present since 2019. Today’s racing is set to impress with 7 races on the card. The first race of the season will take to the track at 1:30pm with The ICM Stellar Sports Lily Agnes Conditions Stakes. Then at 3:10pm, the thrills will be taken to new heights as the iconic Boodles Chester Vase takes place with a phenomenal prize fund of £111,000. Finally, the day’s fun will close at 4:45pm with The Stephen Wade Handicap Stakes. I’d like to extend a thank you to today’s sponsors. First, our title sponsor of the entire May Festival and one of Chester Racecourse’s longeststanding friends, Boodles. Additionally, our new partner Edinburgh Gin, who have this year taken title sponsorship of the Edinburgh Gin Garden enclosure – we’re so very excited to have you join us in this exciting new chapter for our businesses. The TOTE who are present across the racecourse today offering their gaming services. Deepbridge, a successful company who also call our historic city home. ICM Stellar Sports, who have been long-standing supporters of the racecourse. Weatherby’s, who play an instrumental role in British horseracing. Finally, LegatOwen whose Chartered Surveyors can be found across the North West. All of us at Chester Racecourse are grateful for your support. Our next race meeting is tomorrow, as the Boodles May Festival hits its stride with Ladies Day, when the city of Chester is turned into an exhibition of the latest styles and trends. I hope you’ll join us tomorrow to celebrate the return of these iconic race meetings once again. Ian O’Doherty Chair 3

PL ACE A BET ON-COURSE WITH
AND RACECOURSE BOOKMANERS
HOW TO PLACE A BET WITH A RACECOURSE BOOKMAKER WAYS TO BET WIN ONLY The most common form of bet. You win if your horse is first past the post. Example: £5 win at 8/1 would return £45 (8 x £5 = £40 + £5 stake) EACH WAY Backing a horse to win or be placed. This doubles your bet – for example: £5 each way = £5 to win and £5 for a place = £10 total stake. STANDARD EACH WAY TERMS In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. • Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win • 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2 • 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2 • 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3 • Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3 • Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4 • Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4 Some bookmakers also offer ‘betting without the favourite’, where you can back your selection at reduced odds to either win or finish second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker on course as they operate with Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Ltd. (AGT) approval. In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager, who can be found on the ground floor of the Grandstand Enclosure. The AGT also offers a ‘late pay’ service in case the bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to: AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY.

PLACING A BET Experiencing the buzz of the betting ring may be a little daunting at first, but you will soon find it is very easy to place a bet. Here are some guidelines for racegoers to follow: 1. Each bookmaker will be offering slightly different prices, so shop around for the best odds against your selection. 2. Call your bet clearly to the bookmaker by stating the name and / or number of your chosen horse and the stake. 3. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his / her clerk and correct him immediately if any details are called wrongly. 4. Make sure you obtain a ticket from the bookmaker and keep it safe. 5. If your selection wins, hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. Never destroy or dispose of your ticket until after the “Weighed in” announcement has been made. Betting with the bookmaker is tax-free. Deductions are made only if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed. Please check the minimum stake accepted by each bookmaker on his display board. Some bookmakers do not take sums under £5, especially in the main betting ring, but there will be others who are happy to accept £2 bets. Please tender the correct change when possible. 1

RACE 2
LIVE IN THE DREAM was hugely impressive when making all over a similar trip at Sandown recently and the speedy demands of this race should suit him down to the ground. From stall two and with Ryan Moore aboard, he could take some pegging back. Hellomydarlin steps down from Pattern company and, despite the widest draw of all, will likely make her presence felt, while Shamlaan certainly deserves a mention having won four of his last five starts.
RACE 3
Joseph O’Brien has his string in fine form at present and the County Kilkenny handler looks to have a cracking chance in this contest with ABOVE THE CURVE. The American Pharoah filly stepped up on a promising debut performance when readily beating the reopposing Thoughts Of June over 1m2f at Leopardstown four weeks ago, despite running green and hanging left, and there looks to be plenty more to come from her. Hello Jumeirah and Night Battle, who both made winning debuts on the all-weather, are feared most.
RACE 4
STAR OF LADY M made a big impression when beating Brocklesby runner-up Primrose Ridge on her debut at Redcar and she took a step forward when readily justify skinny odds at Ripon three weeks ago. The daughter of Havana Grey should have the speed for this test, is well drawn in stall two and could take some stopping in her bid to complete the hat-trick. Ocean Cloud also remains unbeaten after two starts and warrants respect, while the locally-trained Glorious Angel isn’t out of it either WIN: STAR OF LADY M DANGER: OCEAN CLOUD
NEW LONDON shot to prominence in the betting for the Derby when running out a comfortable winner at Newmarket under a penalty last month, having won at the same track on debut in October. The son of Dubawi is bred to stay well and the manner of his recent victory suggested the extra couple of furlongs may bring about further improvement. Changingoftheguard returned with success at Dundalk and has to enter the reckoning going up in trip, while Berkshire Rebel might prove best of the remaining pair.

TODAY’S TOP TIPS
EVER GIVEN enjoyed a productive juvenile campaign, winning four of his eight starts which included a valuable sales race at York, and he has the ideal draw on his return to action. Auditor ran with credit when no match for an easy winner at Sandown and the step back up 6f is likely to be in his favour, while better is expected from Pocket The Profit, who may have found his latest effort at Newmarket a quick turnaround having won well at Pontefract the week before.

This has the potential to turn into a head-to-head between the Godolphin-owned pair Honiton and SECRET STATE, with preference for the latter who only found one too good in the Wood Ditton last month. Charlie Appleby’s charge is bred to improve over further and he gets the vote ahead of Asean Legend, who is of interest on his first run for William Haggas, and Berkshire Breeze, who ran well at Newbury last time out. WIN: SECRET STATE

It usually pays to be handy around here and with a good draw in stall four, SMEATON’S LIGHT may be able to dictate this race from the front as he did at Leicester before being worn down late on. Gabrial The Wire loves it around here and must enter calculations along with the consistent yet frustrating Ffion, who placed on five of his eight outings on turf last season. Completing the shortlist are Big Narstie, Freedom And Wheat and Roman Dynasty. WIN:SMEATON’S LIGHT

LAST YEAR’S WINNERS The first day of this years Boodles May Festival 2022, City Day, includes the Weatherbys Bloodstock Pro Cheshire Oaks and the Chester Vase, sponsored by Boodles. The two feature contests allow contenders for next month’s Oaks and Derby to gain valuable experience before heading to Epsom. Held in high regard based off her juvenile campaign, Dubai Fountain didn’t disappoint in the Weatherbys ePassport Cheshire Oaks. The filly gained her first win of the season in good fashion, beating home her other 6 rivals to score by a length for Mark Johnston and Franny Norton. On her first start of the campaign, Dubai Fountain was very well-supported in the market, sent off at 13/8F. In a race that has been dominated in recent years by John Gosden and Aidan O’Brien, it was incredible to see Mark Johnson pick up his second success in the race following his win with Good Morning Star in 2012. Dubai Fountain proved that she could potentially be a very smart middle-distance prospect to look out for throughout the season.

display in the Cazoo Derby, he has ran well in Pattern company and now has an official BHA rating of 110.
The clear form pick judged on her fourth in the Fillies’ Mile, Franny Norton was keen to switch to switch her off at towards the rear but travelled well into the race. Run at a slow pace throughout, Franny eventually made him move two furlongs out and albeit edging right, went on to score by one length. The Roger Variantrained Zeyaadah was unlucky back in second, having met trouble in-running, and made-up ground quickly as soon as she got a clear run. Despite not being as valuable as the Chesire Oaks, the pair did get some enjoyment on City Day as Alfaadhel landed the Boodles Maiden Stakes.
The traditional curtain-raiser of Boodles May Festival remains the ICM Stellar Sports Lily Agnes Conditions Stakes and trainer George Boughey got favourite backers off to a perfect start as Navello thrashed his other three rivals by six lengths. This victory made it three wins out of his four starts and completed his hat-trick in impressive style.
Aidan O’Brien also has an excellent record in the Chester Vase, landing seven of the past 10 renewals. However, this year we saw Youth Spirit come home in front for trainer Andrew Balding with Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore only managing with Sandhurst. There was questions as to if this horse would stay this new trip but he clearly takes after his sire Camelot. Taking the step up in trip right in his stride, Tom Marquand gave the 15/2 shot a perfect ride and once he hit the front inside the final furlong, he wasn’t for catching. He saw off Sandhurst by one and three quarters lengths and although a disappointing

The tote+ At tote.co.uk Handicap Stakes was also won by the favourite as David Allan rode Showalong to victory for Tim Easterby. Albeit coming the widest round the home bend and not finding a lot when hitting the front, he scored readily in the end, while Paws For Thought won the tote+ Pays You More At tote.co.uk Handicap Stakes for the jockey and trainer combination of Tom Dascombe and Richard Kingscote. The opening day concluded with a shock 25-1 winner as 5lb claimer Kieran Schofieldrode did well to get Broken Spear up after being slowly into stride. Tony Coyle’s in-mate benefitted for the reapplication of the cheekpieces, and he seemed to appreciate this trip, ending a long losing run.

Boodles is that rarest of creatures: a brand with centuries of brilliant craft heritage, while at the same time always fresh as spring blossom. TO music aficionados, Lily Agnès is a twenty-something singer-songwriter from London with a Spotify profile. To students of the turf, however, Lily Agnes is a filly and broodmare of significant repute. One whose legacy still remains relevant today, more than 150 years on from her birth.
offspring, however, was Ormonde. He won all 16 races he ran in during his career – including completing the Triple Crown 1886, with victories in the 2000 Guineas, Derby and St Leger – and was widely regarded as the ‘horse of the century’. His remarkable achievements are recognised here at Chester with the annual staging of Group 3 Ormonde Stakes, which takes place tomorrow.
Foaled in 1871 and a daughter of 2000 Guineas and Derby winner Macaroni, Lily Agnes won all six of her races as a two-year-old. Later, she went on to secure notable victories in the Northumberland Plate, Doncaster Cup (both in 1874) and The Ebor (1875) – all of which remain prestigious races today – and ended her racing career, aged five, having won 19 races at distances from five furlongs to three miles. Lily Agnes arguably left an even greater imprint on the sport in the late-1800s as a mother of future champions. Her daughter Farewell won the 1000 Guineas in 1885, while Ossory won both the St James’ Palace Stakes and the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot in 1888. Her most illustrious

Lily Agnes died in 1899, aged 28. Said to have developed into a ‘roarer’ during her racing days, it’s thought she passed on this wind affliction to many of her offspring, including Ormonde, who developed issues with his breathing before his four-year-old season. Only then was the Shergar story beginning. Following a modest first inauguration in 1950. The Lily Agnes Stakes is a five-furlong sprint for two-year-old colts and fillies. It is typically won by a sharp, nimble and compact horse, often with previous race experience, and one adept at scooting around the tight turns that make Chester unique in
Its most notable graduate is Risky, the winner in 1993 for trainer Richard Hannon Snr and jockey Pat Eddery. After her success here, Risky stormed to a five-length victory in the Group 3 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot two runs later under Walter Swinburn. She also won the valuable Super Sprint at Newbury and the Group 2 Molecomb Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, again with Swinburn in the saddle, and ended her two-year-old season with an impressive five wins and four second places from nine starts.
Previous Winners
Romantic Myth followed in Risky’s illustrious hoofprints in 2000 by also using her win in this race as a springboard to success in the Queen Mary Stakes, while Lucky Parkes, the heroine in 1992, was retired from racing just over four years later with a remarkable record of 17 individual victories. Like Lily Agnes, she enjoyed a successful second career as a broodmare. Her most talented progeny was Doctor Parkes, who went on to win 15 races in his own right.

RACE DESCRIPTON This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 86 to 105. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130. colours

WEDNESDAY May 17, 2017 was the day Apple became the first company to see its value exceed $800billion. At the same time, another global phenomenon was setting foot on the road to fame and fortune, more than 5,000 miles away from Apple’s California HQ, here at Chester.
the finish line, it would be as close as Alluringly ever got to Enable in three further jousts. Not that there was any shame in coming off second-best to the most talented filly of her generation. That victory here – in what was the only occasion Enable graced the Roodee – was the springboard to a stunning winning spree, which saw her rack up big-race victory after big-race victory during an unbeaten run of a dozen races over 27 months.
Not that anyone in attendance knew quite what a behemoth of the turf they were seeing when Enable stormed to victory under Frankie Dettori in the familiar green, pink and white silks of her pioneering owner-breeder Prince Khalid Abdullah. Heck, after being beaten into third place on her seasonal return at Newbury three weeks earlier, Enable wasn’t even sent off favourite to win the 2017 Cheshire Oaks! That honour went to the Ballydoyle raider Alluringly, who emerged as Enable’s shadow from the final bend. Although she got to within one-and-three-quarter lengths of an eased-down Enable at

They included a five-length rout of Rhododendron in the Epsom Oaks on her next start, three King Georges, two Arcs, two Yorkshire Oaks, the Irish Oaks, the Coral-Eclipse and a Breeders’ Cup Turf at Churchill Downs in Kentucky. When she was eventually retired in the autumn of 2020, following her second unsuccessful attempt to win what would have been a record-setting third Arc, she did so having won 15 of her 19 races, 11 of them Group 1s, and amassing almost £11million in prize money.
If Enable remains the star pupil to graduate from the Cheshire Oaks, a raft of others have endorsed this Listed race’s status as a leading trial for Classic-class fillies since its inauguration in 1950.
Previous Winners
Shoot A Line used her victory in 1980, for Willie Carson and Major Dick Hern, as a stepping stone to a sensational summer of success, which also included wins in the 1980 Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot, the Irish Oaks, Yorkshire Oaks and Park Hill Stakes.
2:24.81
The Ribblesdale and Irish Oaks were also races which another Prince Khalid filly, Bolas, went on to win in 1994 following her victory here. The 2007 victor Light Shift also added Classic success to her CV by landing the Epsom Oaks on her very next start. Light Shift was one of three Cheshire Oaks winners for the late, great Sir Henry Cecil, who was widely regarded among his peers for being the finest trainer of fillies. Yet even Cecil couldn’t get close to the seven victories achieved by Barry Hills, who, despite handing over the reins to his son Charlie in 2011, is still the winning-most trainer in the history of the Cheshire Oaks. For how long remains to be seen, as it’s surely only a matter of time before Aidan O’Brien, who’s currently on six, draws level.

Lupe, Dibidale, Shoot A Line, Light Shift, Bolas; some of the very best fillies of the modern era have won the Listed Weatherbys Bloodstock Pro Cheshire Oaks since the race was inaugurated in 1950. Five years ago the contest was used as a springboard to stardom by one of the greatest of all time, as Enable strolled to a decisive victory before going on to complete the Anglo-Irish Oaks double and win nine more Group 1 races, including two Arcs and three King Georges.
Aidan O’Brien could match Barry Hills’ record of training seven winners with a filly who is aptly named for an Oaks aspirant, in Thoughts Of June. The maiden daughter of her co-owner Coolmore’s late, great multiple champion sire Galileo – the source of two previous Cheshire Oaks winners in Perfect Truth and Magic Wand – was bred by her other co-owner Moyglare Stud Farm out of Del Mar Oaks heroine Discreet Marq, a daughter of Discreet Cat bought by the operation for a cool $2.4 million.
Enable sparked a fine spell of success for graduates of the Cheshire Oaks, which is run for the Robert Sangster Memorial Cup. Magic Wand and Forever Together, the winner and runner-up in 2018, both went on to score in Group 1 company, while Mehdaayih, Manuela De Vega and Fanny Logan, the first three home the following year, all went on to land Group races. The race was not run in 2020, due to the Covid-19 crisis, but was back last year with the smart Dubai Fountain beating subsequent Hoppings Stakes winner and Nassau Stakes runner-up Zeyaadah into second, with future Irish Oaks third Nicest one place behind. This year’s contest promises to be one of the highlights of the first day of the Chester May meeting once again, with ten beautifully bred fillies declared.
#MayMemories
Three of the last four Cheshire Oaks winners, Dubai Fountain, Mehdaayih and Enable, have been by stallion sons of Galileo – Teofilo, Frankel and Nathaniel respectively. The only runner in this year’s contest who falls into that category is the dual winner Typewriter, by Gleneagles. The Andrew Balding-trained filly is out of On Location, a winning daughter of Street Cry and Grade 1 winner Film Maker, and was a bargain 26,000gns Tattersalls October Book 2 yearling purchase by Sackville Donald on behalf of owner Fitri Hay. Galileo also features as damsire of two of this year’s Cheshire Oaks runners, in the last-time-out winners Above The Curve and Makinmedoit.

The Joseph O’Brien-trained Above The Curve is by US Triple Crown hero American Pharoah out of Fabulous, a half-sister to ‘iron horse’ Giant’s Causeway. That makes her a full-sister to Group 3-placed Thinking Of You.
Father Time and Passage Of Time. The unbeaten filly is trained by Simon and Ed Crisford for Sheikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa. Like those two daughters of Kingman, the Queen’s homebred Improvise will be relying on his dam for the requisite stamina to see out the 11 and a half-furlong trip.
Makinmedoit, trained by Harry Eustace for Robert Levitt and Anthony Bromley, is by Derby and Arc victor Golden Horn out of Tranquil Star, a winning daughter of dual New Zealand Group 1 winner We Can Say It Now. Bred by Rabbah Bloodstock, she was bought by Highflyer Bloodstock for just 10,000gns at last year’s Tattersalls Guineas Breeze-Up Sale.
The Michael Bell-trained filly is by the speedy Iffraaj, best known for his sprinters and milers, out of dual middle-distance Listed winner Set To Music. It augurs well that her full-sister Eightsome Reel won over ten furlongs in a light career.
Golden Horn has two darts to throw at this year’s Cheshire Oaks, with Makinmedoit joined by paternal half-sister Hello Jumeirah. The unbeaten William Haggas-trained filly is out of Zubeida, an Authorized half-sister to Fillies’ Mile winner Teggiano.
Ralph Beckett’s representative Moon De Vega is by Lope De Vega, whose stock the trainer has excelled with in recent years, having also sent out Antonia De Vega, Feliciana De Vega, Isabel De Urbina, Manuela De Vega and Max Vega to big-race success.
Another sire double handed in the contest is the brilliant miler and proven Group 1 sire Kingman, through Morning Poem and Night Battle.
She was bred by Montcastle Bloodstock out of Lunesque, a winning Azamour half-sister to high-class middle-distance performer Celimene.
Morning Poem, trained by John and Thady Gosden for owner and breeder Rebecca Phillips, should receive a good dash of stamina from her dam, the Noel Murless Stakes winner and Ascot Stakes third Mill Springs, who in turn is a daughter of Shirocco and Oaks third Mezzogiorno.
Completing the field is the Charlie Fellowestrained Wynter Wildes, a Tamayuz filly from the family of Group 1 performers Highest, Nayyir and Sky Hunter bought from Shadwell for just 15,000gns as an unraced two-year-old at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale last year, as the late Sheikh Hamdan’s operation downsized its string.
Night Battle, a 475,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling buy from breeder Mountarmstrong Stud, is the first foal out of Fine Time, an unraced Dansili full-sister to high-class pair

The 2021 reneweal of the Weatherbys Bloodstock Pro Cheshire Oaks saw Dubai Fountain make it a second success in the race for Mark Johnston and Franny Norton. Dubai Fountain had raced seven times as a two-year-old and showed plenty of ability, rounding off the season with a sound effort in the Fillies Mile at Newmarket where she finished fourth of the 10-strong field. An odds-on winner on debut over 7f at Doncaster, making all, connections clearly knew that they could potentially have a smart one on their hands. She then headed to Haydock and put a smile on many peoples faces as she maintained her unbeaten record with a minimum of fuss and, while she was left with a rather straightforward task when her market rival dropped out, the way she powered up away from the remainder underlines that she has tons of ability. She then proved

herself to be a Pattern horse when placing in numerous group races before getting back to winning ways on her seasonal debut in the Weatherbys ePassport Cheshire Oaks. Although Aidan O’Brien and John Gosden have shared the pride of winning this race over the last five years, you can never count of Mark Johnston’s runners around here and Dubai Fountain proved why she was the favourite for the race. Ryan Moore had the pick of two horses but sided with the Donnacha O’Brien-trained Nicest, while Oisin Murphy picked up the ride on La Joconde for the master-trainer Aidan O’Brien. two furlongs from home and went on to score nicely by one length under Norton. The horse to take from the race though was no doubt the runner-up who pulled a further 5 lengths ahead of Ryan Moore’s ride Nicest.
From her draw in stall three, Dubai Fountain took a keen hold under Franny Norton. He made up his mind early to keep his mount switched off, while James Doyle took advantage of the low draw in stall one to make the early pace, but made it a very steady one on Quenelle D’Or.
This daughter of Teofilo subsequently went on to contest the Cazoo Oaks where she was a modest twelfth, with Zeyaadah finishing behind her again. She was kept lightly raced for the rest of the season with her best effort coming in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Ascot.
As they came around the final bend, Jim Crowley was travelling all over his rivals on the Roger Varian-trained Zeyaadah but found herself in traffic which ended up costing her the race. Depsite making up a lot of ground late on to put Dubai Fountain under pressure, this smart-filly was not for catching once she found herself in front

Woodchurch High School Farm is located on the Wirral. It is just one acre in size but the positive impact it has on children and the wider community is immeasurable. The farm primarily provides a curriculum resource to teach land based education but all subject areas in our school utilise the farm as a curriculum resource. The farm is also used by other schools on the Wirral for work experience and educational farm visits. We are passionate about the environment and promoting animal welfare in farming. We hold workshops for the local community on how to grow your own food and we are helped by a number of local elderly residents who volunteer on the farm. L AST Y E A R ’ S C HE S T E R V A S E Like many of the major races, Aidan O’Brien has an amazing record in this contest but Andrew Balding added his name to the history books as Tom Marquand rode Youth Spirit to victory. Aidan O’Brien has won seven of the last 10 renewals Of the Chester Vase but couldn’t add another to his tally with Sandhurst. Wirko was sent off as the strong 6/4F for Godolphin but it wasn’t to be for the champion trainer/ jockey Charlie Appleby and Wlliam Buick on this occasion, while the other Godolphin runner, Law Of The Sea, was ridden by Frankie Dettori. Richard Hannon’s in-mate Fancy Man was officially the highest rated horse in the race with Sean Levey onboard and Oisin Murphy did the stearing on Pleasent Man for Roger Charlton. Stepping up in trip for the first time, it was unclear if Youth Spirit would stay this longer trip but took the step up in stride following in his sires footsteps.

Law Of The Sea blew his chance coming out of stall eight slowly and never looked competitve following the mistake. Wirko set a steadily run race before trying to inject some pace four furlongs from home. The long time leader soon weakened two furlongs out and Tom Marquand picked up the pieces towards the finishing stages of the race on Youth Spirit, who scored comfortably by one and three quarter lengths. Ryan Moore had to settle for second pace on Sandhurst, while Fancy Man was a further length behind but pulled nicely away from the disappointing favourite. With the winner booking his place in the Derby, he ended up finishing eighth in the race won by Adayar but has subsequently shown he is a top-class individual when third in the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York, before contesting the St Leger.

Ruler Of The World
As we celebrate another year of the Boodles May Festival, we look back at some of the most memorable winners of the Chester Vase who were successful on the Roodee before going on to Derby glory at Epsom. Hyperion would then go on to win the Prince of Wales’s at Royal Ascot and he became a dual Classic winner with success in the St Leger.
In the early years of the Vase, the great Hyperion was successful on the Roodee in 1933. Bred by Lord Derby, he was small in size but enjoyed a strong juvenile campaign as he broke the course record at Ascot in the New Stakes before landing the Dewhurst. The colt had not grown much before his three-year-old season, which he began here at Chester with a two lengths victory in the Vase. That performance saw him start as favourite for the Derby and he landed the Classic in fine style, lowering the track record in the process.
#MayMemories
1980 and 1981 saw back-to-back winners of the Vase follow up in the Derby, with the American-bred Henbit gaining Classic glory at Epsom at the start of the decade. Trained by Dick Hern, he won the Classic Trial at Sandown before arriving at Chester in May. It was a strong renewal of the Vase and he comfortably made all under Willie Carson, with the subsequent Leger winner Light Cavalry back in third. In his subsequent run at Epsom,

equivalent before getting the better of his elders in the King George at Ascot.
The following year we saw a spectacular performance in the Vase by one of the most famous horses in modern history. The legendary Shergar had won the same Sandown race as Henbit by ten lengths to start off his three-year-old campaign and then was brought to Chester by trainer Michael Stoute. The colt delivered another emphatic victory as he won on the Roodee by twelve lengths, which saw him sent off as the odds-on favourite for the Derby. Ridden by nineteen-year-old Walter Swinburn who was having his first experience of the Classic, he made his move around Tattenham Corner before pulling effortlessly clear of his rivals to record a ten lengths success eased down. The winning margin remains a record for the race and Shergar would go on to further Derby success in the Irish 51
In more recent times, leading Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien has built up an excellent record in the Chester Vase as he targets his lightly-raced Derby candidates at the race to prepare them for Epsom. In 2013, Ruler Of The World had not run as a two-year-old and only made his debut a month prior to the May Festival. He won the Vase by an impressive six lengths and the experience of the Roodee track helped the son of Galileo progress to become a Derby winner on just his third career start.
C H EST E R VAS E H IS TO R Y
ONE legendary horse and one legendary trainer will forever be synonymous with the Boodles Chester Vase. Yet they share no connection, other than one was just about old enough to watch and appreciate the other’s extraordinary talents, and the dramatic twist in the tale which followed. Aidan O’Brien hadn’t even enrolled for secondary school in his native Co Wexford when Shergar and romped away with the Chester Vase in 1981. He had already won one Derby trial, the Guardian Newspaper Classic Trial at Sandown less than a fortnight earlier, by 10 lengths when he arrived on the Roodee just a week-and-a-half later as a red-hot 4-11 favourite for the Vase. After another wide-margin win, this time by 12 lengths, Shergar was being proclaimed as the reincarnation of Pegasus, and was duly sent off as the odds-on favourite for the 1981 Derby at Epsom. Ridden by 19-year-old
#MayMemories
Walter Swinburn, who had replaced Lester Piggott as the horse’s regular jockey earlier that season, Shergar breezed his way into the record books with a 10-length triumph that remains the largest-winning margin by a Derby winner to this day. To put some context on Shergar’s performance, the horse he beat into a distant second, Glint Of Gold, went on to win a string of top races in four different countries, including six Group 1s! Shergar subsequently won both the Irish Derby, with Piggott deputising for a suspended Swinburn, and the King George. But after a hugely disappointing display in the St Leger at Doncaster, where finished only fourth, he was ruled out of taking on Europe’s finest in the Prix de l’Arc De Triomphe at Longchamp in Paris, and instead retired to stand as a stallion at his owner-breeder HH Aga Khan’s private stud near the Curragh in Co Kildare. Only then was the Shergar story beginning. Following a modest first
52
season as a sire, Shergar was stolen from Ballymany Stud by an armed gang on the night of February 8, 1983, in what transpired into one of the most high-profile unsolved mysteries of the 20th Century.
Previous Winners
The thieves demanded a ransom of £2million, which was not paid. It was believed Shergar, who was valued at £10m, was taken by a reportedly cash-strapped IRA desperately seeking new funds. But no arrests were ever made and Shergar’s remains have never been found. O’Brien would have been only 13 at the time of Shergar’s disappearance. Yet almost a quarter of a century later, the master of Ballydoyle began laying the foundations for a remarkable era of domination of this prestigious Group 3 prize.
2012
His first strike with Soldier Of Fortune in 2007 coincided with the Vase’s 100th anniversary. A record eight further victories have followed, most notably in 2011 with Treasure Beach, who emulated Soldier Of Fortune by winning the Irish Derby, and in 2013 with Ruler Of The World, who conquered Epsom’s Derby the following month.

RACE DESCRIPTON This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 76 to 95. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 95 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 90. colours

PLAY SMARTER
Though conceding weight all round will not be easy, EVER GIVEN may well be equal to the task. This strong-travelling type did very little wrong last term and has been handed a favourable draw for his return to the Roodee (winner of a 7f nursery on sole previous visit here). Pocket The Profit is a big player judged on his reappearance success, but he could find things happening a shade too quickly round here from stall seven, unless the ground eases appreciably. Golden Warrior is third choice.

SIXTH RACE 4.15 THE EDINBURGH GIN MAIDEN STAKES (CLASS 3) (GBB RACE)
1m 2f 70y
for maiden three yrs old Total race value £23660 Owners Prize Money. 1st £9142, 2nd £4572, 3rd £2286, 4th £1143, 5th £572, 6th £414, 7th £400, 8th £400. (Penalty Value £11596.50)
RACE DESCRIPTON This one mile, two furlongs about 70 yards contest for three-years-olds is a maiden stakes - a race for horses that have yet to record a racecourse victory. There are a variety of reasons why the older horses in this race could still be maidens. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career. colours

This looks destined for one of the Godolphin-owned colts, with HONITON marginally preferred to the equally promising Secret State. The selection finished hot on the heels of a couple of decent-looking types at Newbury, without being knocked about, and he is taken to enhance the Gosden yard’s good record in this maiden. The Stephen Wade Handicap Stakes
Legat Owen, Chester based Chartered Surveyors, have sponsored this race in memory of their Partner Stephen Wade, who unexpectedly passed away aged only 54 years in December 2020. Stephen was very well regarded throughout the local business community for his unrivalled expertise and sound advice on all commercial property matters. He is sadly missed by family, friends and business colleagues. His wife Jan and children Becky, Tom and Lottie, are with us today and will form the winners presentation party for the Race.

RACE DESCRIPTON This is a seven furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty, which is based on the age of the horse in this race. colours
