A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN - SATURDAY 21 AUGUST 2021

Good Afternoon, I’m thrilled to be able to welcome you to arguably one of the most popular days of the year here at Chester Racecourse – Ladies Day. An unrivalled experience of glitz and glamour, served by first-class hospitality and set against the backdrop of the world’s oldest racecourse, Ladies Day is an unmissable event for all. This Ladies Day we are very fortunate to once again be able to enjoy the unrivalled atmosphere of a race day with a crowd. As the horses thunder towards the final furlong, the cheers of supporters and spectators creates a feeling unlike any other. This Ladies Day, we have 7 exciting races scheduled for you. To start off today’s races, we begin with The Matthew Clark Handicap Stakes (Class 2, 3+yo) at 1:10pm. An hour later at 2:10pm, our listed race of the day The Stella Artois Chester Stakes (Class 1, 3+yo) takes to the track – with a grand prize of £50,000. Finally, this iconic day will draw to a close with The Jam Shed Handicap Stakes (Class 4, 3+yo) at 4:20pm. I’d like to extend my thanks to today’s sponsor, Matthew Clark. Matthew Clark is a UK-based wholesaler of alcoholic and soft drinks, supplying thousands of small, medium and large businesses across the country. Having been in business for over 200 years, Matthew Clark is widely recognised as an industry specialist, with a colossal offering of drinks products as well as other services ranging from training to marketing support. I hope you’ll return to see the racecourse as the seasons begin to change.

ON COURSE BETTING & HOW TO READ THE RACECARD WAYS TO BET WIN ONLY The most common form of bet. You win if your horse is first past the post. Example: £5 win at 8/1 would return £45 (8 x £5 = £40 + £5 stake) EACH WAY Backing a horse to win or be placed. This doubles your bet – for example: £5 each way = £5 to win and £5 for a place = £10 total stake. STANDARD EACH WAY TERMS In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. • • • • • •

Fewer than 4 runners - all on to win 5 – 7 runnewrs (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3 Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3 Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4 Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

Some bookmakers also offer ‘betting without the favourite’, where you can back your selection at reduced odds to either win or finish second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker on course as they operate with Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Ltd. (AGT) approval. In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager, who can be found on the ground floor of the Grandstand Enclosure. The AGT also offers a ‘late pay’ service in case the bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to: AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY. PLACING A BET Experiencing the buzz of the betting ring may be a little daunting at first, but you will soon find it is very easy to place a bet. Here are some guidelines for racegoers to follow: 1. Each bookmaker will be offering slightly different prices, so shop around for the best odds against your selection. 2. Call your bet clearly to the bookmaker by stating the name and / or number of your chosen horse and the stake. 3. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his / her clerk and correct him immediately if any details are called wrongly. 4. Make sure you obtain a ticket from the bookmaker and keep it safe. 5. If your selection wins, hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. Never destroy or dispose of your ticket until after the “Weighed in” announcement has been made. Betting with the bookmaker is tax-free. Deductions are made only if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed. Please check the minimum stake accepted by each bookmaker on his display board. Some bookmakers do not take sums under £5, especially in the main betting ring, but there will be others who are happy to accept £2 bets. Please tender the correct change when possible.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE 1

TODAY’S TOP TIPS SHOULDAVBEENMORE has been highly tried on her last two starts, performing with great credit in Group 3 and Listed company, and she looks capable of taking advantage of a drop in grade. The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Invigilate holds an entry in the Rockfel later in the season and is taken to improve on her debut fifth in a Newmarket maiden, while Lady Caroline has experience on her side and also looks set to go well.

RACE 2

WIN: SHOULDAVBEENMORE

FFION doesn’t have many miles on the clock and with this sharper test looking set to work in her favour, she is taken to register her first win on the turf. On A Session performed well when second in a competitive handicap at the Galway Festival on his latest start and should make another bold bid, while Boardman was successful on his last outing at this track and can also make an impact.

RACE 3

WIN: FFION

RACE 4 RACE 5

DANGER: YESYES

Little Miss Dynamo has her first run away from Ripon, but the way she made all to score last time suggests that she could be tough to beat if getting out in front. She may face competition for the early pace from SADMAH, though, and Kevin Ryan’s filly is taken to strike from stall one. After winning at Haydock, she showed plenty of toe in a Group 2 at Newmarket and could find this company easier to handle. Lucy Lulu is another to note, as is Fabiosa. WIN: SADMA

DANGER: LITTLE MISS DYNAMO

Venturous bounced back to winning ways at York but he was taking advantage of a falling mark there so could find life tough off 5lb higher. Mountain Brave was a gritty winner here two starts ago but failed to beat a horse home off this mark at Goodwood latest, so preference is for LOOK OUT LOUIS. Julie Camacho’s gelding won well here two starts ago and showed his new rating holds no fears when second at Catterick subsequently. WIN: LOOK OUT LOUIS

RACE 6

DANGER: ON A SESSION

It might pay to focus on the three-year-olds in this Listed event, with a preference for DANCING KING, who has proven highly progressive since stepping up in trip at the start of the year. He performed well when third in the Group 3 Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket on his latest start and may be capable of registering his first win outside handicap company. The unexposed filly Yesyes is expected to do even better now moving up in trip, while Morando has a good record at this track and looks next best. WIN: DANCING KING

DANGER: VENTUROUS

BATRAAN is the in-form option here after tasting success at Doncaster, where he got up close home to win by a neck after meeting trouble in running. He has been put up 4lb but has a good draw in one and will prove hard to beat. Lost My Sock is the only C&D winner in the field after scoring off 2lb higher in June and has to be considered, as does his stable companion Ava Go Joe. WIN: BATRAAN

RACE 7

DANGER: INVIGILATE

DANGER: LOST MY SOCK

Gabrial The One is worthy of consideration having won off higher marks here over shorter, and at Newcastle on the all-weather. He may struggle to cope with WATERSMEET, who is coming down the weights and is more than capable of winning from this mark back in this class. Overhaugh Street runs well at this venue and has scored twice, including this race in 2019. He could get in the mix off 3lb lower this year. WIN: WATERSMEET

DANGER: GABRIAL THE ONE

THE RACECOURSE DESCRIPTION

A left-handed circular flat course, turning for most of the way, and finishing in a short straight which is less than two furlongs in length.

The course suits the handy type of horse and a fast start is quite important in sprints. At just over a mile around this is the smallest course in Great Britain.

DEVIL’S ANGEL has confirmed he’s equally effective on turf at Newmarket of late, shaping better than the result a week ago, and he’s an appealing candidate down in trip with Oisin Murphy in the saddle. Saaheq won over C&D in June and lurks on a dangerous mark, with Phoenix Star also considered.

HORSE WELFARE At all of our race meetings, there are three equine vets on duty. They are equipped and positioned to give immediate care to a horse should it require it. This may involve screens being erected around a horse to give the veterinary team privacy to administer treatment and does not necessarily mean the worst. The same applies with doctors and jockeys.

(Penalty Value £15462) RACE DESCRIPTION This race is a seven and a half furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races.

PLAY SMARTER

SPACE BLUES is a Group 1 winner without a penalty, and he shaped as if retaining all his ability when a close fourth in the Lennox Stakes at Goodwood last month. He should be spot on now and will prove hard to beat with conditions ideal. Primo Bacio was unlucky not to go close in Group 1s at Newmarket/Deauville after her impressive win here, so is a clear next best back down in class/trip.

(Penalty Value £15462) RACE DESCRIPTION This is a five and a half furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

(Penalty Value £4860) RACE DESCRIPTION This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 61 to 80. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

PLAY SMARTER

NIGHT ON EARTH hasn’t been at his best since finishing second at Nottingham in April, but the handicapper has given him a real chance (now 11lb lower in the weights) and he wasn’t beaten far by some in-form, progressive types last time. Nigel Tinkler’s charge is worth siding with here. Providing the ground doesn’t ease, Batraan will be a threat and Bert Kibbler also enters calculations.

SEVENTH RACE 4.20

THE JAM SHED HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 4)

1m 7f 196y

for three yrs old and upwards Total race value £10200 Owners Prize Money. 1st £3840, 2nd £1920, 3rd £960, 4th £480, 5th £240, 6th £240, 7th £240, 8th £240. (Penalty Value £4860) RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.
