CHAIR’S WELCOME WELCOME TO DAY TWO OF THE 2022 BOODLES MAY FESTIVAL - LADIES DAY Good afternoon, Welcome back to the second day of our world-famous Boodles May Festival, Ladies Day! Today we celebrate not only the renowned races taking place, but also the innovative fashions that are championed by the racing industry and its patrons. Today we enjoy 7 races on the race card. The day’s excitement is set to begin at 1:30pm with The ICM Stellar Sports Handicap Stakes. The day will then reach its peak at 3:10pm with The Tote.co.uk Proud to Support Chester Racecourse Ormonde Stakes offering a prize of £111,000. Finally, the penultimate day of the Boodles May Festival will close with The Roofing Consultants Group Handicap Stakes at 4:50pm. I’d like to extend thanks to today’s sponsors. Our title sponsor, Boodles, a renowned jeweller with an iconic history in the North West and whose partnership with Chester Racecourse has been celebrated for years. The official partner for Ladies Day, Homeserve, a familiar nationwide provider of repair services who have become a household name. Deepbridge, a thriving investment business whose roots in Chester continue to be their foundation. ICM Stellar Sports, a globally successful brand of sports representatives. The TOTE, who can be found across the racecourse providing their gaming services. The European Breeders Fund whose contribution to the British racing industry is invaluable. Finally, the Roofing Consultants Group who provide roofing services in every major city in the country. All of us at Chester Racecourse are grateful for your continued support. We next race tomorrow, when the final day of the Boodles May Festival will conclude the festival’s racing fixtures. The TOTE Chester Cup Day is sure to be an unmissable occasion and I hope you’ll be in attendance to celebrate the return of the Boodles May Festival in true Chester style. Ian O’Doherty Chair 3

PL ACE A BET ON-COURSE WITH

AND RACECOURSE BOOKMANERS

HOW TO PLACE A BET WITH A RACECOURSE BOOKMAKER WAYS TO BET WIN ONLY The most common form of bet. You win if your horse is first past the post. Example: £5 win at 8/1 would return £45 (8 x £5 = £40 + £5 stake) EACH WAY Backing a horse to win or be placed. This doubles your bet – for example: £5 each way = £5 to win and £5 for a place = £10 total stake. STANDARD EACH WAY TERMS In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. • Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win • 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2 • 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2 • 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3 • Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3 • Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4 • Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4 Some bookmakers also offer ‘betting without the favourite’, where you can back your selection at reduced odds to either win or finish second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker on course as they operate with Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Ltd. (AGT) approval. In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager, who can be found on the ground floor of the Grandstand Enclosure. The AGT also offers a ‘late pay’ service in case the bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to: AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY.

PLACING A BET Experiencing the buzz of the betting ring may be a little daunting at first, but you will soon find it is very easy to place a bet. Here are some guidelines for racegoers to follow: 1. Each bookmaker will be offering slightly different prices, so shop around for the best odds against your selection. 2. Call your bet clearly to the bookmaker by stating the name and / or number of your chosen horse and the stake. 3. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his / her clerk and correct him immediately if any details are called wrongly. 4. Make sure you obtain a ticket from the bookmaker and keep it safe. 5. If your selection wins, hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. Never destroy or dispose of your ticket until after the “Weighed in” announcement has been made. Betting with the bookmaker is tax-free. Deductions are made only if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed. Please check the minimum stake accepted by each bookmaker on his display board. Some bookmakers do not take sums under £5, especially in the main betting ring, but there will be others who are happy to accept £2 bets. Please tender the correct change when possible. 1

RACE 2

RACE 1

TODAY’S TOP TIPS Night On Earth likes to make the running when he can and if he gets to the front from the four stall, he won’t be far away. His tactics may set the race up for LOOK OUT LOUIS, who was ahead of him last time and is taken to confirm that form despite being 1lb worse off. Alligator Alley could do better after finishing third on his first run in 17 months at Wolverhampton and is another to consider here. WIN: LOOK OUT LOUIS DANGER: NIGHT ON EARTH Outgate didn’t really finish as hoped over the mile at Newmarket last month but he can be ridden nearer the pace back at this trip, which may improve his chances. OUTSIDE WORLD looks interesting after her length fourth at Doncaster and if she makes all again she could prove harder to catch now dropped back a furlong on her second start of the season. Spacer might prove better than his current mark of 84 and he could surprise a few.

RACE 3

WIN: OUTSIDE WORLD

DANGER: OUTGATE

STAR OF INDIA shaped as though he would benefit from stepping up in trip sooner rather than later when fifth to Native Trail in the Craven at Newmarket last month and the son of Galileo gets the vote to continue his trainer’s excellent record in this contest. Sonny Liston (fourth) and Cresta (fifth) are both entitled to improve on their respective efforts in the Feilden, which has already worked out with the winner acquitting himself well in the Guineas and the sixth winning at Goodwood last week.

RACE 4

DANGER: SONNY LISTON

ALBAFLORA’s two victories have come on her first start of the season, including when notably impressive in a Listed contest at Ascot last May, and the five-year-old, who went on to place twice at Group 1 level last term, sets the standard. Believe In Love was just denied success at the highest level when runner-up in the Prix de Royallieu on Arc weekend and warrants plenty of respect along with Hamish, who landed a Group 3 at Kempton in September.

RACE 5

WIN: STAR OF INDIA

PRIDE OF PRIORY improved with each start last season, culminating with a handicap win at Haydock. Despite that being a match contest, the four-year-old couldn’t have scored any easier and a 6lb rise may underestimate his ability. Enigmatic outran his odds with a fine third at Newmarket last month and he is of interest stepping up in trip, while Enfranchise and Pride Of America appear best of the remainder.

WIN: ALBAFLORA

RACE 6

DANGER: ENIGMATIC

The participation of Glorious Angel and Zephina must be in doubt as that pair were both declared to run here on Wednesday, and EXPLICIT gets the vote to go one better than his opening second at Musselburgh. The speed he showed that day suggests that the demands of this track will suit and he could go close with normal improvement. Self Praise caught the eye on debut at Doncaster and is respected, but 100,000gns newcomer California Gem rates the bigger threat representing powerful connections.

RACE 7

WIN: PRIDE OF PRIORY

DANGER: BELIEVE IN LOVE

Course scorer Abbado improved in each of his three starts last year and must enter calculations making his seasonal/handicap debut off a mark of 86, but race-fitness could give TROJAN HORSE the edge. The Ulysses colt is equally as progressive and was always doing enough when upped to 1m4f at Ripon three weeks ago. Quicker ground is an unknown, but he looks fairly handicapped off 82 and can mount a bold bid. Temple Of Artemis and Hoffman add further spice to the race.

WIN: EXPLICIT

WIN: TROJAN HORSE

DANGER: SELF PRAISE

DANGER: ABBADO

LAST YEAR’S WINNERS We were treated to a competitive day of racing on the Roodee for the second day of the Boodles May Festival. The opening flying five-furlong handicap was won comfortably by Eric Alston’s talented veteran sprinter Jabbarockie. A well-backed favourite, he was perfectly drawn in stall 1 and made use of the run against the rail, breaking smartly and taking up an early lead under Jason Hart. The inside draw doesn’t necessarily guarantee victory though, with Jabbarockie needing to dig deep to see off the strong challenge of the Tim Easterby-trained pair of Count D’orsay and the talented Corinthia Knight. Nevertheless, Jabbarockie plugged on strongly to run out a cosy length and a quarter winner. One of the feature races of the meeting, the Dee Stakes brought together a competitive field of seven to contest the Listed race over a mile and a quarter. Roger Varian’s El Drama, carrying the famous colours of Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, travelled much the best and ran out a comfortable winner despite being one of the outsiders in the betting. Delivered at the perfect time by Andrea Atzeni, El Drama was classy in victory, seeing off the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Maximal by a length with Irish raider Earlswood back in third.

Japan

The Tom Dascombe-trained pair of Mercurial and Russellinthebushes kept the judge busy, with a photo required to split the two in the penultimate race of the day. Hayley Turner was at her best aboard Mercurial to steer her gallant mount home and just get up on the line to win a tight finish.

Master Zoffany appreciated the return to rain-softened ground when winning the Deepbridge Estate Handicap under Paul Hanagan for Richard Fahey. Drawn in stall 2, he was given a perfect toe into the race by eventual runner up Bravado for Franny Norton and Mark Johnston, with Master Zoffany only needing to change gear round the bend and stay on to seal the victory.

Mark Johnston and Franny Norton had to wait until the last to get their daily win but Love Is Golden provided the top pair with a win in what was another tight finish between stablemates. Baileys Derbyday lost out by a neck and didn’t have a clear run, with Franny Norton making all on the brave Love Is Golden to win the finale.

The Ormonde Stakes often showcases a classy colt and it did the same last year with Japan landing the odds to win the feature. He kept on well under Ryan Moore over a trip just longer than his optimum, beating subsequent top stayer Trueshan and subsequent Ebor Handicap winner Sonnyboyliston in what looks like a very hot renewal of the Group 3 contest. Joint favourites Baryshnikov and Spirit Dancer needed the judge to separate them, with the former coming out on top in the hands of Connor Beasley for David Barron. Spirit Dancer’s short head defeat denied Richard Fahey and Paul Hanagan a double on the day, with the pair pulling clear and providing one of the best finishes of the meeting.

RACE DESCRIPTON

1

This is a five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130. colours

RACE DESCRIPTON This is a seven furlongs about 127 yards handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 81 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 100 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95. colours

El Drama

TODAY is Dee day. And that’s especially true for the owners, trainers and jockeys of any of the runners in this afternoon’s HomeServe Dee Stakes who still harbour Classic aspirations. With just over four weeks until the Derby and Oaks at Epsom, the time for pretenders to stake a claim is now.

of 2002. Such uninspiring form saw him sent off the unconsidered 20-1 outsider of just four runners for the Dee Stakes. Big Bad Bob had won his final four races as a two-year-old and was a red-hot 4-9 favourite to make it five. Despite being officially rated 20lb superior to Kris Kin, Big Bad Bob had no answer to the devastating burst of speed jockey Fergal Lynch conjured from Kris Kin inside the furlong.Reigning five-time champion jockey Keiren Fallon was on board Big Bad Bob that day. But as No1 rider to Kris Kin’s trainer Sir Michael Stoute, Irishman Fallon took over for Kris Kin’s victory at Epsom, where he again swooped late to overtake The Great Gatsby, and deny his trainer Aidan O’Brien a third consecutive Derby following wins for Galileo and High Chaparral.

First staged in 1813, the Dee Stakes is the third and final Classic trial to be run during the Boodles May Festival. While the Chester Vase for colts and Cheshire Oaks for fillies, both of which took place here yesterday, have emerged as more influential trials for Epsom in recent times, the Dee Stakes remains a valuable Listed race in its own right, and one steeped in tradition. The last horse to win the Dee Stakes and the Epsom Derby in the same season is Kris Kin in 2003. Kris Kin finished only 15th on his debut before winning an ordinary Doncaster maiden in two runs in the autumn

#MayMemories

Fallon had earlier steered Oath to the same Dee Stakes-Epsom Derby double in 1999. After winning the

34

Dee Stakes by five lengths, Oath then provided his trainer Sir Henry Cecil with the last of his four Derby victories at Epsom, and Fallon his first.

Previous Winners

Other notable modern-day winners include Pentire (1995) and Sir Harry Lewis (1987). Along with Teenoso, Pentire was arguably the best horse Newmarket trainer Geoff Wragg handled during a 25-year career. Following an undistinguished two-year-old season, Pentire developed into a top-class middledistance performer at three, winning six of his seven races in 1995, including the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes.

El Drama put up a fine performance to win the 2021 running of the Dee Stakes.

by Hurricane Lane) to the mix and the stage was set for a thriller.

Trained by Roger Varian and ridden by Andrea Atzeni, the talented son of Lope De Vega is well-related as a half-brother to Oaks third Volume (dam of the talented Quorto), and he proved the step up in trip was just what he needed.

The race delivered in spades. Outsider Luther Cee made the running from stall 2, with Ontario and Fox Tales held up at the back of the field. Yibir soon came into the mix, taking it up from Luther Cee early and setting fair fractions in front.

A winner on debut at Doncaster, he carried the colours of Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum to finish third in the Spring Cup at Lingfield before filling the same position in a conditions race at Kempton on his next start. Upped two furlongs in trip, he faced a tough field in the Dee Stakes and on the face of it a tough task to make it into the places. Aidan O’Brien’s talented Ontario came to Chester after a fine third in the European Free Handicap at Newmarket, Foxes Tales had broken his maiden at Newbury the time before and Godolphin’s Yibir had just finished third in a hot Classic Trial at Sandown. Add the unexposed Irish raider Earlswood and Sir Michael Stoute’s Maximal (who had just been touched off

With Maximal, Earlswood and El Drama never far away from the pace, all three looked set to fight out the finish and they did, putting up a grandstand finish. El Drama came out on top, racing on a lone path down the centre of the course and extending away to win by a length. Richard Kingscote brought home Maximal to be next best in second having had every chance, while Johnny Murtagh’s Earlswood ran a fine race to finish second. The race reads well in context, with the fourth-placed Yibir since proving himself on the international stage in the USA and the UAE and Earlswood landing a Group 3 at the Curragh on his next start. 37

Initially, the weights are set at 9st each before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory or 5lb for a Pattern race success. colours

Boodles is that rarest of creatures: a brand with centuries of brilliant craft heritage, while at the same time always fresh as spring blossom. Quintessentially British, it is one of the only remaining familyowned jewellers on London’s Bond Street, staying timeless and yet contemporary. Founded in 1798, Boodles is known for the quality of its precious gemstones and the skill of its creations. Thanks to an inspirational team of in-house designers, the company’s visionary philosophy continues to champion exemplary British craftsmanship. Brothers Nicholas and Michael Wainwright lead the company

This year brings many exciting new developments for the brand. March saw Boodles come onboard as the lead sponsor for the Cheltenham Gold Cup and in May the second Boodles Garden will appear at the Chelsea Flower Show. In June Boodles will be a Pageant partner for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, a momentous and historic event for the entire country. Boodles high jewellery collection for the year, entitled Peace of Mined, sources diamonds directly from the world-famous Cullinan Mine, the same mine that produced two of the crown jewels’ most important diamonds. The perfect way to mark the occasion. There’s an effortless sense of grace, discretion and fun about Boodles. Fans of Boodles say you simply won’t find it elsewhere. Perhaps that’s because Boodles recognises — and expresses in its byword — that behind each stone there’s always a story. boodles.com

ORMONDE, who won all 16 races in his career including the English Triple Crown in 1886, was widely regarded as the greatest horse of the 19th Century. To some, he’s arguably the greatest racehorse to have lived. Either way, his legacy has been celebrated here at Chester since 1936, when the Ormonde Stakes was staged for the first time. Foaled in 1883, Ormonde was a son of the prolific winning racemare Lily Agnes, after whom the opening race of the Boodles May Festival is named. Ormonde won all three races he contested as a two-year-old, including the Criterion and Dewhurst Stakes in the space of only 48 hours.

Ormonde was retired by his owner Hugh Grosvenor, the 1st Duke of Westminster, to stand at his Eaton Hall stud, just south of Chester. Much was anticipated of Ormonde’s second career as stallion, but fertility issues meant he sired only eight foals that would race in Britain. Despite this, one of them, Orme, proved a champion in his own right, winning a string of top races including the Eclipse twice, the Sussex Stakes and the Champion Stakes.

He won his first Classic, the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, on his first run of his three-year-old campaign; then added a second when he landed the Epsom Derby on his next start. Further wins followed in the St James’s Palace Stakes and the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot, en route to Doncaster, where his victory in the St Leger saw

#MayMemories

Ormonde become only the fourth horse in history to win the Triple Crown of British Classics. Ormonde won the Champion Stakes in 1886, and the Rous Memorial and a second Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot on consecutive days during his final season in 1887. That last-named race proved the most challenging of Ormonde’s career. Although he eventually mastered old adversary Minting in an epic duel, a wind ailment he inherited from his dam Lily Agnes had become so acute it was said his “choking fight for breath could be heard all over the racecourse”.

Fittingly, the Group 3 Ormonde Stakes has been won by numerous top-class horses down the decades. From the esteemed stayer Alycidon (1949) and Tulyar (1952) during its early days, through to Indiana (1965), who was also a Chester Vase winner, and Classic winners Blakeney (1970), Crow (1977) and Teenoso (1984).

Previous Winners

Its most celebrated winners of recent times include Daliapour (2000), Harbinger (2010), St Nicholas Abbey (2011) and Brown Panther (2014), who was jointly-owned by former Liverpool, Manchester United and England footballer Michael Owen, and trained locally at Manor House Stables by Tom Dascombe.

Japan

Japan proved himself to be a classy colt in what was a hot renewal of the Group 3 Ormonde Stakes, the feature race on the second day of the Boodles May Festival. . now about Trueshan makes the performance look all the better.

Aidan O’Brien has plundered this race in the past and relied on 13/8 favourite Japan to land further success in 2021. He did indeed deliver, in a style that looks better with the benefit of hindsight.

Jim Goldie’s Euchen Glen made the running with Withold not far away, in contrast to Sextant who was never involved. Hughie Morrison’s Kipps couldn’t deliver a finishing kick but was found to be lame on veterinary inspection after the race.

A proven Group 1 performer, Japan was given a battering for only beating Trueshan three-quarters of a length, but the manner of the victory combined with what we know

Silvestre De Sousa, with the smart gelding running an odd race on and off the bridle. He ran his race to finish fourth but on this ground he was arguably a tad disappointing. The race was between eventual winner Japan, runner up Trueshan and the third-placed Sonnyboyliston. The trio fought out a tight finish and all proved to be classy types moving forward.

Sonnyboyliston also proved himself upped in trip, winning a Limerick Listed contest and landing a highly competitive Ebor Handicap at York before following up in the Irish St Leger at the Curragh.

Japan was subsequently sent globetrotting again but only scored on his home turf in Ireland, landing the Meld Stakes at Leopardstown. The runner-up,

ALBAFLORA was only just denied in the Fillies’ & Mares’ Stakes at Ascot when last seen in October and sets a clear standard on that form back down in class. She clearly goes well fresh after her impressive comeback win at Ascot last season and she wouldn’t be troubled by any rain. RACE DESCRIPTON This is a one mile, two furlongs about 70 yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty, which is based on the age of the horse in this race. colours

Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking. colours

RACE DESCRIPTON This is a one mile, four furlongs about 63 yards handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 71 to 90. Like most handicaps on the Flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage. colours
