A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR - SATURDAY 25 JUNE 2022
Good Afternoon, Welcome to the Matthew Clark Summer Festival. Today we enjoy the first Saturday of summer racing here at Chester Racecourse as we immerse ourselves in one of the world’s favourite sporting pastimes.
Racing will begin today with The Champagne Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé EBF Maiden Stakes at 1:55pm. Later on, the eagerly anticipated Chandon Garden Spritz Handicap Stakes will grace the Roodee at 3:40pm. Finally, the day’s fun will draw to a close with The Mud House Wines Summer Adventure Handicap Stakes at 5:20pm. I’d like to extend our thanks to today’s title sponsor, Matthew Clark. Matthew Clark is a renowned wholesale beverage business providing over 4000 product lines to thousands of businesses and locations across the UK. OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
ON COURSE BETTING & HOW TO READ THE RACECARD WAYS TO BET WIN ONLY The most common form of bet. You win if your horse is first past the post. Example: £5 win at 8/1 would return £45 (8 x £5 = £40 + £5 stake) EACH WAY Backing a horse to win or be placed. This doubles your bet – for example: £5 each way = £5 to win and £5 for a place = £10 total stake. STANDARD EACH WAY TERMS In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. • • • • • •
Fewer than 4 runners - all on to win 5 – 7 runnewrs (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3 Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3 Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4 Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4
Some bookmakers also offer ‘betting without the favourite’, where you can back your selection at reduced odds to either win or finish second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker on course as they operate with Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Ltd. (AGT) approval. In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager, who can be found on the ground floor of the Grandstand Enclosure. The AGT also offers a ‘late pay’ service in case the bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to: AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY. PLACING A BET Experiencing the buzz of the betting ring may be a little daunting at first, but you will soon find it is very easy to place a bet. Here are some guidelines for racegoers to follow: 1. Each bookmaker will be offering slightly different prices, so shop around for the best odds against your selection. 2. Call your bet clearly to the bookmaker by stating the name and / or number of your chosen horse and the stake. 3. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his / her clerk and correct him immediately if any details are called wrongly. 4. Make sure you obtain a ticket from the bookmaker and keep it safe. 5. If your selection wins, hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. Never destroy or dispose of your ticket until after the “Weighed in” announcement has been made. Betting with the bookmaker is tax-free. Deductions are made only if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed. Please check the minimum stake accepted by each bookmaker on his display board. Some bookmakers do not take sums under £5, especially in the main betting ring, but there will be others who are happy to accept £2 bets. Please tender the correct change when possible.
RACE 1
TODAY’S TOP TIPS It will take a special performance to beat SILENCER, who sets a fair standard with an official rating of 88. Richard Hannon’s colt wasn’t beaten far in the Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot and from his low draw, he can shed his maiden tag. Danger Alert ran with credit on his racecourse debut last month and may show more with that experience under his belt, while Paddy Brunty, who was well supported first time out, is another to consider.
RACE 2
WIN: SILENCER
Dr Marwan Koukash is no stranger to winners on the Roodee and he may taste more success in the shape of THE NEW MARWAN. Richard Fahey’s charge has tumbled down the weights in recent times but produced an improved display when narrowly denied over C&D earlier this month. He can repel the challenge of Wynter Wildes, who remains in fine fettle following a good second at Nottingham, while the remainder are headed by Australian Harbour.
RACE 3
WIN: THE NEW MARWAN
RACE 4 RACE 5
DANGER: GLORY FIGHTER
Runner-up in the Windsor Castle last season, DIG TWO never quite lived up to expectations after that effort, but a determined success at Musselburgh last time out was a step in the right direction. Hugo Palmer’s charge relished the step up to seven furlongs and there could be further improvement to come as he looks to fend off the challenge of stablemate Roman Dragon, who wasn’t beaten far here last time out, and the in-form Hebrides, who is on a four-timer. WIN: DIG TWO
DANGER: HEBRIDES
Zainalarab is bound to be popular here after getting off the mark in decisive fashion at Salisbury last month, though a 7lb penalty makes life tougher on this occasion. Preference is for CARLTON AND CO, who shaped with abundant promise when runner-up on debut at Wetherby and the extra half a furlong here should be right up her street. Stablemate Jazz Samba is entitled to be thereabouts, along with Candy Warhol. WIN: CARLTON AND CO
RACE 6
DANGER: WYNTER WILDES
A C&D winner in his juvenile campaign, NAVELLO’s prominent style of racing could prove critical in this small-field scenario. The three-year-old is turned out quickly following a creditable run in the Palace Of Holyroodhouse at Royal Ascot (0-105) and he’s taken to regain the winning thread now eased in class. Glory Fighter is unlikely to be far away, having hit the crossbar on his two latest starts, along with the top-weighted Gabrial The Devil. WIN: NAVELLO
DANGER: ZAINALARAB
Preference is for KING OF TONGA. The six-year-old has been knocking on the door as of late, having placed second in three consecutive outings. He is rated 1lb higher than his last run at Pontefract, where he was a length behind Elegant Erin (now rated 81), and the application of blinkers could help. Prospect is another to note having shown improvement recently, while you can also make a good case for Albegone. WIN: KING OF TONGA
RACE 7
DANGER: DANGER ALERT
DANGER: PROSPECT
As well as taking a drop in class, EMIYN could benefit from a reduced trip having lost two places towards the finish over 2m 2f at this track last month. He runs off the same mark in this, which is only 3lb higher than his last winning rating, so he could play a leading role. Baileys Derbyday finished second to Evaluation (now rated 90) recently and looks a threat, while the connections of Hydroplane seek to regain some earlier form by reaching for cheekpieces. WIN: EMIYN
DANGER: BAILEYS DERBYDAY
THE RACECOURSE DESCRIPTION
A left-handed circular flat course, turning for most of the way, and finishing in a short straight which is less than two furlongs in length.
The course suits the handy type of horse and a fast start is quite important in sprints. At just over a mile around this is the smallest course in Great Britain.

race one
This race is a five furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

Richard Hannon won this corresponding event last year and his MINNETONKA gets the verdict to repeat that feat having made an impressive winning debut at Salisbury earlier this month, displaying an electric turn of foot to put the race to bed over 1f out. Lezoo did well to catch an experienced rival at Bath a fortnight ago so she’s fancied to give the selection most to think about, ahead of George Boughey’s pair Malrescia and Believing.

On profile, SENSE OF DUTY rather stands out as a 3-y-o on a steep upward curve and, assuming she’s as effective on the AW, she can take the step up in class in her stride and continue her winning sequence. A well-run 6f on a stiff track looks ideal for Spycatcher and he’s second choice, with Judicial of some interest at a bigger price.

(Penalty Value £5076) Weights raised 2lb and paragraphs 27 to 31 of the Weights and Handicapping Code complied with where applicable. RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

(Penalty Value £7215.60) Weights raised 4lb and paragraphs 27 to 31 of the Weights and Handicapping Code complied with where applicable. RACE DESCRIPTION This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

Cases can be made for all the sextet but preference is for NIGHT ON EARTH. Mick Appleby’s charge has had plausible excuses for a couple of below-par efforts recently and, with his mark continuing to ease, he’s fancied to open his account on the turf this year with first-time cheekpieces added to his usual hood. Navello arrives in good nick so he heads up the opposition, ahead of 5-time course winner Gabrial The Devil.

BETTING RING MANAGER The Betting Ring Manager is located in the Tattersalls Enclosure. He will be available in each enclosure to assist in any betting dispute.
At all of our race meetings, there are three equine vets on duty. They are equipped and positioned to give immediate care to a horse should it require it. This may involve screens being erected around a horse to give the veterinary team privacy to administer treatment and does not necessarily mean the worst. The same applies with doctors and jockeys.

Loads to consider but it could be worth chancing SUMMER’S KNIGHT, who was most progressive as a 3-y-o and should prove all the better for his comeback run. The veterans dominated this last year and Graphite could be the pick of the older brigade trying this trip for the first time, while the likeable Rajinsky and the progressive Valley Forge are also high on the shortlist.

(Penalty Value £11854.20) RACE DESCRIPTION This is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 81 to 100. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

(Penalty Value £5643.62) RACE DESCRIPTION This contest is another Novice Stakes, this time run over a distance of seven furlongs. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career.

(Penalty Value £5076) RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85.

(Penalty Value £5076) RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85.
