Welcome to York Racecourse for the final raceday of our 2024 season; a day with seven fascinating races offering a record prize fund, including a six-figure purse for the Coral Sprint Trophy. I hope you have a successful and thoroughly enjoyable day.

It has been a tremendous year on the track so far, with some of the very best racehorses and jockeys in the world having competed at York and gone on to further glory elsewhere. Whether it was from a memorable hour on just the second day of the season back in May when Bluestocking and Economics won the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Middleton and Dante Stakes respectively , prior to landing the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and Irish Champion Stakes. Or perhaps Bradsell making it back to back Group One sprints for Archie Watson’s yard by winning both the Coolmore Nunthorpe and Flying Five. The likes of Economics, Mill Stream, Calandagan or Al Nayyir carry strong Knavesmire runs into QIPCO British Champions Day next weekend. We will then hope to see York form taken to the Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar - notably through superstar City of Troy, now rated the highest turf racehorse in the world (see p61 for more) I hope you have enjoyed an action-packed season to date and thank you for your support.

Our feature sponsor, Coral, have been associated with this day since 1979 and the £100,000 Coral Sprint Trophy is the flagship race For your chance to part of the Presentation Party for this famous race, take the challenge of beating television personality, Chris Hughes, in a game of Racing Reflex; you’ll find him between the Parade Ring and Champagne Lawn.

Kings Lynn is one of several runners today for trainer Andrew Balding, as Team Kingsclere look to build on their lead in the Charles Clinkard Top Trainer Championship Yesterday, the continuing Yorkshire led battle saw Kevin Ryan join David O’Meara and Ralph Beckett in second place as Balding keeps hold of his lead. See p20 for more details on this season’s competition.

The meeting will also see the conclusion of the season long contest to be top jockey at York. In the Living North-sponsored contest, Oisin Murphy sits atop the field, in search of his second York title (2018 being his previous crown). His engagement at Newmarket today, creates a window of opportunity for a late charge, perhaps from four-time winner, Danny Tudhope or yesterday’s double winner Jason Hart. Please see page 46 for the story so far.

Remember if you want to follow all the action from Newmarket and York, then use the Racing TV zone on the Roberto lawn, a bar, good food to go, seating and the channel on a giant screen.

Thank you again for your support today and throughout this year, I hope you thoroughly enjoyed both the season and today. Winter well and I hope you can return for our new season on Wednesday 14th May 2025, the tickets go on sale online later today

Bustardthorpe Development

Regular visitors to the Knavesmire will have seen the ongoing investment in the facilities for horses, participants and racegoers at York. This commitment to improve the experience of racing at York continues with the focus being the area that lies to the south of the Knavesmire Stand and behind the Bustardthorpe Stand.

Today you can see a multi-million pound project that improves this area for Grandstand & Paddock racegoers, it was opened in August by HM The Queen and is now ready for you to enjoy. We’d value your feedback, as with any new development it should come on for the run.

The Roberto Pavilion provides a fast-serve bar, a fish & chip shop and a cocktail/Pimms bar. As well as, tote & William Hill outlets.

The Churchill Tyres Lawn and Canopy should be a great spot to relax and enjoy the food outlets and improved Theakston Bar & dedicated Guinness Bar that flank it.

A state of the art William Hill betting shop has reopened, with a new block of toilets.

In keeping with the Green Knavesmire 300 commitment, a host of sustainability features have been embedded; a living roof, rainwater harvesting and solar panels being examples.

THE HIGHLIGHTS ARE:

• Refurbishing the structure of the 1913 Bustardthorpe Stand viewing steppings.

• A new, single storey, fast serve Roberto Pavilion that includes a fast-serve bar, a fish & chip shop as well as a Pimms/Cocktail bar.

• Replacing and extending the existing single-storey extension to the rear of the Bustardthorpe Stand creating a new, bigger Theakston Bar and William Hill betting shop.

• Two new racegoer lawns with an overarching canopy similar to that covering the John Carr Terrace.

• Additional toilet, catering and betting facilities.

• Improved arrival experience, including feature gates that remember owner-breeder, Reg Bond and improved accessibility.

• Sustainability embedded into the development such as solar panels, green roofs and sustainable water provision, as the venue delivers on its Green Knavesmire 300 pledge.

We hope you enjoy it.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Racing Post Standard Times

is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race.

Non-runner

Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration.

Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

Head over to our activation near the Parade Ring before 2pm to get involved and make sure to keep an eye on your phone as the team will contact the winner and you’ll need to move quickly to claim your prize.

Racing Reflex will stay open for the rest of the day to test your reflexes, with the person achieving the highest score of the day securing a pair of General Admission tickets to the Coral Sprint next year

The coral.co.uk Rockingham Stakes

(Listed Race)

Six Furlongs (1,200 metres)

See page 78 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 6f

Race Type: Listed

Prize Money: £70,000

Age: 2

Stalls: Farside

This race is part of the Pattern pyramid (think divisions in football) which denotes the best contests, Listed (such as this), Group 3, Group 2, rising to Group 1. This means it is in the top 300 races in the land.

Only open to two-year-old horses yet weight allowances for fillies mean the boys carry more weight to reflect their greater strength, notice how Pearl of Windsor is a filly so off the lower starting point.

An in-form stable could be the clue here, see the table at the beginning of this race.

LAST YEAR’S RACE

Winner: PUROSANGUE

Trainer: Andrew Balding

Jockey: P J McDonald

Age/Weight: 2-9-3

Runners: 9 SP: 2/1F

Punters got off to a good start after Andrew Balding’s Purosangue showed a nice turn off foot to beat Esquire.

RACE FACTS & STATISTICS

THE TALE OF THE CLOCK

Racing Post Standard Time: 1m 10s

Course Record: 1m 8.90s by Tiggy Wiggy (21-Aug-14)

All times are based where possible on the corresponding race over the last seven years

Leading course trainer (19-24): W Haggas (36 wins from 213 runners, 17%) runs RANEENN Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): R Beckett (11 wins from 47 runners, 23%) runs BOLO NEIGHS Fancy That: W Haggas won this race in 2021 and 2022. The stable runs RANEENN today.

Longest Traveller: BOLO NEIGHS trained by R Beckett, Kimpton Down, 251 miles.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 10th October

KNAVESMIRE TIP

BOLO NEIGHS bolted up in the valuable Goffs 500 at the Curragh a fortnight ago and looks well worth his place in this higher grade With Ralph Beckett’s string in excellent form, the son of Coulsty is expected to progress further and repel the likely challenge of Shadow Army. Richard Fahey’s gelding might not have handled the undulations of Ripon last time, but he sets the standard on official ratings and may well be revitalised by a return to this more conventional track with first-time blinkers applied. Invictus Gold is also noted.

One Mile About Two Furlongs (2,000 metres)

See page 78 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 1m 2f

Race Type: Handicap Rating: 86-105

Prize Money: £45,000

Age: 3+

Stalls: Inside Rail

Time for our first handicap, such races are designed for close competition so, the handicapper, is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights.

This one is for 3yo+ horses run over one and a quarter miles, with Bolster at the top of the scale

The high handicap rating band of 86-105 means that it will attract some pretty smart types (like for the Test cricketers a score of over 100 denotes a top performer, no horse ever reached 317).

Why not visit the Parade Ring to see them up close before making your final selection.

All times are based where possible on the corresponding race over the last seven years

Leading course trainer (19-24): R Fahey (29 wins from 434 runners, 7%) runs HAVE SECRET Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): K R Burke (11 wins from 40 runners, 28%) runs BOLSTER Longest Traveller: VALVANO trained by R Beckett, Kimpton Down, 251 miles.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 10th October

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Valvano chased home Guineas hero Notable Speech at Kempton before disappointing on his return at Salisbury last month. He goes handicapping from an opening mark of 97 and although it is no certainty, that could be lenient. However, a chance can be taken on EUCHEN GLEN. The admirable 11-year-old might prefer further nowadays, but he should get a good pace to aim at and his recent Ayr second only confirms that he remains on good terms with himself Others to note include Bint Al Daar, Bennetot and Bolster.

The Coral Sprint Trophy FACT FILE:

WHEN DID THE RACE BEGIN?

Distance

Six furlongs

Prize money £100,000

Today’s feature race began life in 1979 as a conditions race with a prize fund of £8,000

After five renewals the race was reclassified as a handicap. The race has continued to blossom and now offers prize money of £100,000

HAS IT ALWAYS ATTRACTED BIG FIELDS?

Yes, only when Handsome Sailor won in 1986 for Michael Dickinson did the field fall into single figures. Over the past ten years, the average field size has been around about 20 runners. Today the new super size stalls that York Racecourse purchased means 22 were declared.

WHO WAS THE FIRST WINNER?

Runnett, partnered by Willie Carson carrying a whopping 10st 1lb, beat four rivals in 1979 For the next two years the race attracted small, but top quality fields. Steve Cauthen won on Jester the following season and the locally trained flying mare Soba was an odds-on winner under the late David “Dandy” Nicholls 30+ years ago

HOW FARES THE FAVOURITE?

Not very well. Traditionally, the race has been a graveyard for favourite backers with just a handful of market leaders having scored in two decades. Kaldoun Kingdom ended a miserable run for market leaders when prevailing at odds of 6/1 in 2009 for Richard Fahey, and in 2011 Sirius Prospect also justified his place at the head of the market when landing victory at odds of 13/2 Prior to that you needed to go back to 1995 and Double Bounce to find an outright winning favourite. Last years market favourite Wobwobwob could only manage 18th having been sent off 7/2.

ANY NOTABLE NAMES ON THE ROLL OF HONOUR?

The Tatling won in 2002 and the gelding became a top sprinter with 17 victories and earnings of more than £680,000 His victories included the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot and he was runner-up three times in the Group 1 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes here on Knavesmire. Meanwhile, Borderlescott won this is 2005 and he is of course a dual winner of the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes having triumphed in the Group 1 sprint in 2008 and 2009. Last year's winner Montassib has since won a Listed race and the Group One Sprint Cup at Haydock this season. Montassib

LEADING TRAINERS?

David O'Meara is no stranger to having winner's at York and has added the Coral Sprint Trophy to the races he now targets. Gulliver has been the source of his most recent success but he also won the race with Intisaab back in 2016. He has added to the Yorkshire-based trainers prevalence in the race and it does pay to follow their runners. Today he sends the veteran Summerghand.

LEADING RIDER?

Frankie Dettori achieved the joint best record, with two wins for Luca Cumani on Khaydara in 1990 and Double Bounce in 1995, as well as victory in 2004 on Jonny Ebeneezer.

PJ McDonald also has two wins in the race and he's on board Woven - perhaps he can jump above Frankie if Michael Dod's charge puts his best foot forward at 2.40pm.

HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?

The Easterby family have been worth following. Peter won it twice with Polly’s Brother and with Cumbrian Waltzer in 1991 while son Tim saddled Bollin Joanne to take the prize in 1996 after he had taken over the licence at their Habton Grange Stables. Tim’s uncle Mick Easterby also scored with Benzoe in 1993. This afternoon Mick isn't represented, but Tim has Hyperfocus and Quest For Fun running here.

Based across town, David O'Meara has won three of the last eight runnings, in 2016 with Intisaab and in 2019 & 2020 with Gulliver The 2017 & 2018 winner, Kevin Ryan, has an impressive three entered this year in the shape of Room Service, Sergeant Wilko & Aleezdancer. The 2022 winner, Strike Red, once again represents Richard Fahey.

To be fair, a Yorkshire trained victor is a statistical probability today as more than half of the runners are trained in the White Rose County

2024 Living North Top Jockey at York

Oisin Murphy leads the way with nine wins after a fine season on the Knavesmire. He’s chased in second by Ryan Moore, while Danny Tudhope sits just two behind the leader on seven wins. On the final day Danny Tudhope and Jason Hart are the one’s to watch with the leaders on duty at Newmarket. A prize of £2,500 as well as the chance to put the Skeeping Bronze on your mantelpiece, awaits the victor.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

A typically wide-open contest in which many will fancy their chances, and only a tentative vote can go to HYPERFOCUS. Tim Easterby’s charge has enjoyed somewhat of a resurgence this season, winning twice at Chester. Although below-par at Haydock last time, he outran big odds to finish fourth in this 12 months ago and is now 3lb below that mark. There will be challengers aplenty however, and perhaps none more so than Room Service, who wasn’t disgraced in the Ayr Gold Cup three weeks ago Strike Red landed the corresponding event two years ago and must enter the reckoning, along with Summerghand and Aleezdancer

Fancy That: R Beckett won this race in 2019, 2022 and 2023. The stable runs VALIANT KNIGHT today. Longest Traveller: VALIANT KNIGHT trained by R Beckett, Kimpton Down, 251 miles. NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 10th October

KNAVESMIRE TIP

SEAGOLAZO outran his odds with a creditable fourth in a valuable sales race at Doncaster last month and, given the form has been well advertised with the runner-up landing a Group 1 in France in the intervening period, the son of Havana Grey can make a big impression under top-weight in these calmer waters. Ralph Beckett chases a hat-trick of winners in this race and has another key player with Valiant Knight. Our Mighty Mo and nursery debutant Sir William should handle the ground and also enter calculations.

Next up is a race also limited to 2yo’s however this time the experience is more limited and all are awaiting that first W. A filly would have started start with a lower weight than their male counterparts, however the fairer sex have swerved today’s renewal.

All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock. This race also qualifies under the GBB scheme.

The advice is to rely on your choice of the two ‘p’s pedigree or pin!

KNAVESMIRE TIP

The penny looks to have dropped for MERRIJIG on his last couple of starts. He appeared to have plenty in hand when running out a 10-length winner over 2m at Ripon last month and a 7lb rise may well underestimate this progressive stayer Arrange narrowly got the better of a subsequent winner over 2m at Haydock latest and she is of interest, while Emiyn wasn’t seen to best effect when sixth at Chester last time but could land a blow with his sights lowered.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Stalls: Inside Rail

We end our year with a farewell handicap, this time 3yo+ horses, back over one and a quarter miles.

“Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and in this contest the upper rating of 85 means that these are still quality horses but they won’t have their spotlight stolen by a real superstar

Looking for help? Then follow the racecourse tipster, who has marked his selections with a red bi plane

If you win this race you can claim bragging rights until we start the 2025 season on Wednesday 14th May. Thank you for your support this year, Happy Christmas.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Glistening Nights showed a likeable attitude when scoring over 1m2f at Redcar last month and, upped 4lb, another bold showing is forecast That said, PROMETHEAN edges preference. He did well to finish fourth after racing towards the rear in a steadily-run handicap over 1m2f at Doncaster last time and, off an unchanged mark, he’s expected to go very close. Surrey Fire and Financer are a couple of others to consider
