WELCOME
TO
THE CURRAGH Where Champions Are Made Good Afternoon, May I take this opportunity to welcome you to the Curragh for Day 1 of the Tattersalls Irish Guineas Festival, even though I know that most of you will not be here in person. While this is a delayed start to the season for us, it is great that we are racing again, as racing drives the whole industry which is so important to the wider economy. We are disappointed that we can’t welcome everybody here in person, hopefully we will be able to before too long when it is safe to do so. I would particularly like to thank the owners with runners here today. The owners make a very valuable contribution to racing, we are very grateful to you for your support and look forward to having you back soon. We will also miss our members and all our loyal customers who create great atmosphere in the Curragh. I would also like to acknowledge the contribution of the officials from HRI and IHRB for their hard work and dedication to put all the protocols in place to allow us to race and to the trainers, jockey and stable staff for helping us stage two magnificent days of racing. The Tattersalls Irish Guineas Festival holds a very important place in the racing calendar. It really kicks off the season with our first two classics of the year, the Tattersalls 1000 and 2000 Guineas. These are two very prestigious races and have produced so many great winners over the years. We are very grateful to Tattersalls for their continued support which means so much to us. The Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas is always a great contest and this year’s race promises to be no exception. In addition to the Tattersalls 2000 Guineas, we have two other Group races today, the Coolmore Magna Grecia Mooresbridge Stakes and the Coolmore Ten Sovereigns Gallinule Stakes and these look like being two great renewals. We are very grateful to Coolmore for their generous sponsorship over the two days. The Paddy Power Irish Lincolnshire is one of the great handicaps of the year and will be a very competitive contest. This is always a very popular race with the public, and we are grateful to Paddy Power who also have a permanent presence in the Curragh with their shop in the Champions Hall. We would also like to thank the sponsors of our other races today, Tally Ho Stud, Equine Medirecord, Anglesey Lodge Equine Hospital and the Irish European Breeders Fund. This has been a very difficult time for everybody as we work our way through Covid-19. On behalf of the Board and all my colleagues at the Curragh, I would like to say a very big thank you to our frontline workers who have done such a wonderful job in getting us all through this. Thankfully, we appear to be dealing with this challenge well as a country and this could not have happened without the efforts of these heroes. I hope that you and your family are well and please stay safe and I look forward to welcoming you back to the Curragh before too long.

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 6

CURRAGH COMMENT Given how well Aidan O’Brien’s string have been running of late the Ballydoyle trio all merit the utmost respect. ADMIRAL NELSON is arguably the pick having set a new record for the highestpriced yearling to be sold at the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale last summer at £440,000. The son of Kingman is out of a Listed-winning mare and it would be no surprise if he were to play a leading role today. Irish Chief and Merchants Quay also merit plenty of consideration, while Cooper’s Hawk and Zoffany’s Delight are the pick of the remainder.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. CURRAGH COMMENT Aidan O’Brien holds a strong hand with preference of his runners going to DAWN RISING. The son of Galileo was considered good enough to run in a Group 3 on his debut at Leopardstown in October and, despite finishing last on that occasion, he is expected to have benefited plenty from that experience. Serpentine is related to plenty of Group winners and warrants the utmost respect with Seamie Heffernan onboard, while others worth considering include Lough Cutra, who has placed on both his starts to date, and Cabot Hills, who has switched to Donnacha O’Brien over the winter.

CURRAGH COMMENT Nordic Passage looks the obvious starting point having successfully dropped to 6f at Naas on Monday, winning with ease. He is sure to be popular under a 6lb penalty, but a chance is taken on Ger Lyons’ ARDHOOMEY, who has landed some top races here in the past. The eight-year-old former Group 2 winner has dropped to a very winnable mark and seems to save his best for this venue. Others to consider are Verhoyen and Ice Cold In Alex, with Flash Gordon also of interest on his handicap debut.

CURRAGH COMMENT The 106-rated MYTHICAL is the one they all have to beat as he could hardly have been more impressive when shedding his maiden tag at Gowran last September and was then deemed good enough for the Group 3 Zetland Stakes at Newmarket before he performed creditably in the Group 1 Criterium De Saint-Cloud. Providing he goes on this quicker ground, he should have too much class for Crossfirehurricane, who is unbeaten in three starts but has more on his plate than when beating his stable companion Choice Of Mine (second) in Listed company at Dundalk in February. Gold Maze is also interesting on the evidence of his third in the Group 2 Beresford Stakes here.
WIN: MYTHICAL
DANGER: CROSSFIREHURRICANE
THE GALLINULE STAKES Gallinule was a promising juvenile who failed to fulfill his class on the racetrack, but will be remembered for his accomplishments while at stud. He sired many winners, highlighted by Pretty Polly, an outstanding racehorse who won the British Fillies Triple Crown in 1904.

CURRAGH COMMENT A competitive renewal of this contest and the vote is for ARMORY, who showed a high level of ability as a juvenile. He won the Futurity prior to chasing home Pinatubo in the National Stakes, while he was only narrowly behind Victor Ludorum and Alson in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagadere and those two finished first and third respectively in the French Guineas. The unbeaten Siskin is an obvious threat but he will have to improve to beat the selection, judging on his two successes at the expense of Monarch Of Egypt. The well-bred Vatican City merits plenty of respect, while similar comments apply to Royal Lytham.

CURRAGH COMMENT Jessica Harrington appears to hold all the aces in this and it could be her hat-trick seeking NJORD who lands the spoils. The four-year-old scored on his first outing for the handler when last seen at Galway and the course-and-distance winner can continue his progress despite a 6lb rise. Stablemates Tauran Shaman, who was last seen in a Group 2, and the consistent Onlyhuman are also of interest. Bowerman has been in top form this winter and warrants plenty of respect, with Current Option and Bashiyr others to note in a competitive heat.

CURRAGH COMMENT SEARCH FOR A SONG produced a career-best effort at this track on her final start last year, winning at the highest level at the expense of Kew Gardens, Southern France and Cross Counter. She improved markedly for the step up to 1m6f in the Irish St. Leger and the reopposing Latrobe was back in sixth. In an ideal world she’d want further than an extended 1m2f, but on the evidence of her maiden win and Listed success at York she isn’t slow and will appreciate the quick ground on offer. Her stable companion Maria Christina could be in to ensure this doesn’t turn into a sprint finish. Fleeting is an admirable filly who always runs her race but probably doesn’t win as often as she should, while the 2018 Irish Derby winner Latrobe is entitled to get closer to the selection over this trip.
