A brilliant son of Kingman at both 2 and 3 years “… Calyx recorded a rating of 120p in the [Group 2] Coventry Stakes, matching the average performance required to win a Group 1 two-year-old race in Britain and Ireland in the last decade. … The performance that Calyx put up in the Group 3 Commonwealth Cup Trial was as striking as any seen in a pattern sprint all season and marked him down, even at such an early stage, as champion sprinter material… … Calyx has the looks to go with his fashionable pedigree.” Source: Timeform’s Racehorses of 2019

WELCOME
TO
THE CURRAGH Where Champions Are Made Good Afternoon, May I take this opportunity to welcome you to the Curragh for Day 2 of the Tattersalls Irish Guineas Festival, even though I know that most of you will not be here in person. While this is a delayed start to the season for us, it is great that we are racing again as racing drives the whole industry which is so important to the wider economy. We are very disappointed that we can’t welcome everybody to the Curragh in person, hopefully we will be able to before too long when it is safe to do so. I would particularly like to thank the owners with runners here today. The owners make a very valuable contribution to racing, we are very grateful to you for your support and we look forward to having you back soon. We will also miss our members and all our loyal customers who create great atmosphere at the Curragh. I would also like to acknowledge the contribution of the officials from HRI and IHRB for their hard work and dedication to put all the protocols in place to allow us to race and to the trainers, jockey and stable staff for helping us stage two magnificent days of racing. The Tattersalls Irish Guineas Festival holds a very important place in the racing calendar. It really kicks off the season with our first two classics of the year, the Tattersalls 1000 and 2000 Guineas. These are two very prestigious races and have produced so many great horses over the years. We are very grateful to Tattersalls for their continued support which means so much to us. In addition to the Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas, we have two other Group races today. I would also like to acknowledge the support of Kirsten Rausing and sponsorship of the Lanwades Stud Stakes. We are very grateful to Kirsten for her continued support of the Curragh and the Irish Racing industry. The Coolmore Calyx Gladness Stakes looks like being another great race and we are very grateful to Coolmore for their generous sponsorship of their races over the two days. We would also like to thank the sponsors of our other races today, Tally Ho Stud, Tharos Group, Eyrefield House Stud, Platinum Bloodstock, and the Irish European Breeders Fund. This has been a very difficult time for everybody as we work our way through Covid-19. On behalf of the Board and all my colleagues at the Curragh, I would like to thank our frontline workers who have done such a great job in getting us all through this. Thankfully, we appear to be dealing with this challenge well as a country and this could not have happened without the efforts of these heroes. I hope that you and your family are well and please stay safe and I look forward to welcoming you back to the Curragh before too long.

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 6

CURRAGH COMMENT DALTON HIGHWAY makes plenty of appeal on his course-and-distance second in the Irish Cesarewitch last season and remains fairly treated, off this 2lb higher mark, with a subsequent victory over hurdles suggesting he’s still on the up. Any money for Kaatskill Nap, who returns from a lengthy absence, would be interesting, with Willie Mullins strengthening his hand further with Zenon, who ran well over hurdles in the spring. Never Do Nothing is another to consider now returning from a spell over timber as he’s unexposed as a stayer on the Flat, while fresh from an AW victory in February, Jerandme also merits consideration.
WIN: DALTON HIGHWAY

CURRAGH COMMENT With no form to go on at all the market will be a key guide, with the marginal preference for TASSEL FLOWER, who has a pedigree that suggests she could be useful this year. She is by top sire Kodiac, while her dam won over 6f and is a half-sister to the Group 3-winning juvenile Angel’s Hideaway. Finest is an obvious threat having cost 250,000 euros and Aidan O’Brien’s two-year-olds have been in great form this week. Others who merit consideration are Blue Cabochon, Dickiedooda and Royal Blend.

No corresponding race.
CURRAGH COMMENT FLORENCE CAMILLE shaped with a fair amount of promise on her debut when third at Cork in August and Dermot Weld’s filly makes plenty of appeal with the step up in distance likely to bring about improvement. Snow is capable of taking a big step forward as a three-year-old being a full-sister to Kew Gardens, while Thunder Kiss and Sagrada Familia appeal most of the newcomers as they are related to black-type performers.
WIN: FLORENCE CAMILLE
DANGER: SNOW

CURRAGH COMMENT BAHLWAN wasn’t at his best at Dundalk last time, but his previous turf form was strong and this relatively big field should suit Denis Hogan’s charge. The five-year-old might be one of the better handicapped horses in this race off 62, and appeals slightly more than Strong Johnson, who carries a big weight as a result of his consistency in 2019. Teddy Boy took 17 attempts to get off the mark but merits plenty of respect nonetheless.
WIN: BAHLWAN
DANGER: STRONG JOHNSON
HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. Joseph O’Brien has a strong hand with stable newcomer Verimli and King’s Vow, who made it back-to-back-victories when getting the better of Kasperenko (second) last time. The former boasts a fine record from his time with Alan de Royer-Dupre and having just been touched off in a Listed race on his latest start in France, looks set for a bold bid here. However, a step up in trip could bring about further improvement from Jim Bolger’s likeable filly MOTHER VINCENT, who finished last season with a three-timer, and she is narrowly preferred. The lightly-raced track-and-trip winner War Diary, Jon Ess and Tartlette are others to note.

CURRAGH COMMENT LANCASTER HOUSE started his career with three successive victories for the Ballydoyle team, but a tilt at Group 2 company probably came soon enough for him in September and he just looked to find the experience too overbearing. These are slightly calmer waters and, with a few extra months on his back, the four-year-old is fancied to resume that earlier development. Speak In Colours shaped nicely when fourth at Riyadh in February, while Psychedelic Funk and Smash Williams could also prove dangerous.

CURRAGH COMMENT ALBIGNA sets the standard in this contest having scored in the Prix Marcel Boussac last October and she was not disgraced when not suited by the test of speed in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. She may prove to be better over slightly further than this in time but the daughter of Zoffany still rates as the one to beat. The maiden So Wonderful should not be underestimated having run well in defeat on multiple occasions last year, including when in front of the selection in the Moyglare. The shortlist is completed by Fancy Blue and Peaceful.

CURRAGH COMMENT MAGIC WAND is forced to concede weight to all of her rivals and must prove she has the gears for this assignment now dropping back in trip on her seasonal return. Nevertheless, her victory in the Mackinnon Stakes in November, which was followed up with two near misses at the top level in Hong Kong and America, suggests Aidan O’Brien’s globetrotter is the one to beat. Silk Forest appears a filly on the upgrade and could put up most resistance, with Hamariyna and the droppedin-trip Lady Wannabe others to consider in what could be a close battle for the minor money.
