Good afternoon and welcome to the Curragh for Sky Bet Race Day. We are delighted to welcome Sky Bet back to the Curragh following the inaugural running of the Sky Bet Race to the Ebor Handicap last year. The race is aimed at those horses hoping to go to York for the Sky Bet Ebor in August and the winning horse will be guaranteed a place in the very valuable race. The Sky Bet Ebor is one of the most prestigious and valuable races of the year and it is great that the Curragh now has a race that links us to this great race and another one of the World’s great racecourses. We would also like to thank Qatar Racing and Equestrian for their generous sponsorship of the Group 3 Ballyogan Stakes. The Curragh has enjoyed a very positive association with Qatar and it is one that we hope to develop in the future. This prestigious race for fillies and mares has a fine history and we look forward to another great renewal this evening. We would also like to thank the Irish Stallion Farms EBF who are the biggest sponsor in Irish racing for their continued support. Sponsorship makes a very important contribution to racing as it enhances the prize fund which is so important to the success of Irish racing. We would ask you to support our sponsors whenever you can. I would particularly like to thank the owners with runners here today. The owners make an invaluable contribution to racing, we are very grateful to you for your support and look forward to having you back in the Curragh for our Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Festival on the 25, 26th and 27th June. We are pleased that this will also be a trial meeting with the return of racegoers for the first time since 2019. Unfortunately, numbers will be limited but it will be an important step on the road to a return to full attendances. We will be issuing further details of the trial meeting in the coming week. I hope that you and your family are well and please stay safe and I look forward to welcoming you back to the Curragh before too long. Kind regards PAT KEOGH Chief Executive

Official Handicap Rating

B O F J T

Breeding Breeder Owner Form Jockey Trainer

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CURRAGH COMMENT Missing Matron arguably sets the form standard based on her third to Castle Star here last month over 5f. That said, she is already making her fifth career start and may prove vulnerable despite the addition of first-time cheekpieces. Elliptic made an impressive start to her career when overcoming inexperience to win at Tipperary and she commands plenty of respect with the likelihood of improvement to come. The vote, however, goes to RAPIDUS as he is a half-brother to Harbour Watch, who was a top-class juvenile for Richard Hannon Snr, and the son of Caravaggio is taken to continue his fine start to his career as a stallion. Confident Star and Dr Zempf are others with viable credentials on debut.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. THE QATAR RACING AND EQUESTRIAN CLUB BALLYOGAN STAKES The Ballyogan Stakes was initially run over five furlongs at Leopardstown’s sprint track for horses of either gender, but it has subsequently developed into a key part of the sprinting programme for fillies and mares over an extra furlong here at The Curragh since 2015. In the early runnings the legendary Vincent O’Brien dominated proceedings as he landed the race seven times including the very first edition with Boone’s Cabin in 1975. He would then rack up a four-timer starting from 1977, with the first two of those Godswalk and Solinus both going on to win at the highest level in the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot. The latter would also add Newmarket’s July Cup and the William Hill Sprint Championship (now the Nunthorpe Stakes) at York to his name as he became the top sprinter of 1978. Another leading name on the Ballyogan roll of honour is Committed who won the prize in 1985 for Dermot Weld in the hands of Mick Kinane. She progressed into one of Europe’s leading sprinters as a four-year-old having already been successful in the Nunthorpe and Longchamp’s Prix de l’Abbaye the previous year. Her Ballyogan victory was her first start of 1985 as she went on to win the Flying Five Stakes (formerly held at Phoenix Park) and becoming only the third dual winner of the Abbaye. Two years later saw Vincent O’Brien’s final success in the Ballyogan as Bluebird dropped back to sprinting to great effect, also landing the King’s Stand by an impressive four lengths on Vincent O’Brien his following start. Subsequent European champion sprinter Mr Brooks won the Ballyogan for trainer Kevin Connolly in 1991 while the race was still at held at Leopardstown, before the race moved to Cork in 2002 and from 2004 it has been run as a fillies and mares Group 3 over six furlongs.

From 2005 through to 2014 the race returned to Leopardstown but since 2015 it has been staged at The Curragh, with Ainippe winning the first renewal held here for the combination of Ger Lyons and Colin Keane. Since the race became a fillies only event it has gone to English-trained runners on six occasions, with the most recent of these being Divine for Mick Channon in 2016. However, the prize has stayed in Ireland for the last four years, including with Soffia in 2019 for Edward Lynam and you can see a replay of her thrilling victory in the video below. That success formed the middle part of a hat-trick for the filly as he she was then dropped in trip to put up a scintillating performance in the Sapphire Stakes back here the following month.

Millisle

Last year the Ballyogan was moved to Naas due to a rescheduling of fixtures due to Covid 19 and it was Millisle who became a Group winner as a three-year-old for Jessica Harrington, following on from her victory in the Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket in 2019.

CURRAGH COMMENT IVA BATT shaped with plenty of promise as a juvenile, finishing fourth behind the top-class St Mark’s Basilica over 6f here on one occasion, but two wins from her last three starts indicates that she is an even better three-year-old. The Ivawood filly is just 3lb higher than when scoring narrowly at Cork last time and she could strike again. THE ORBY STORY In the early part of the twentieth century, Ireland was the very poor relation to England when it came to flat racing. In 1907, Orby changed all that. Orby was a chestnut colt, born in 1904 by Orme out of Rhoda B. He was bred and owned by Richard ‘Boss’ Croker. Born in Clonakilty, Co. Cork on 23rd November 1841 Richard ‘Boss’ Croker’s family emigrated to America during the Great Famine. He worked as a machinist, a barman, a blacksmith, professional boxer becoming an alderman in New York. He became Head of Tammany Hall, the organisation in control of the Democratic Party in New York. Croker amassed a vast fortune and invested heavily in American bloodstock. He left New York for England in 1903 just as the government of the USA set up a commission into allegations of corruption at Tammany Hall. Attempting to have his horses trained in Newmarket the stewards of the Jockey Club would not grant him permission. A furious Croker transferred all horses to Ireland in 1904 and teamed up with J.J. Parkinson at Maddenstown Lodge on The Curragh. Amongst the horses was a 2-year-old named Orby. Showing exceptional ability on the gallops despite fragile front legs, Orby made his first appearance at Leopardstown in August 1906 finishing a 3rd at odds of 1/3. Orby’s next outing was in The Railway Stakes at The Curragh in September ridden by stable jockey John Thompson. He was beaten, by stable companion Electric Rose. Croker, a volatile character at the best of times, allowed his emotions to get the better of him and accused Parkinson of stopping Orby. Outraged a blazing row erupted between both men. Parkinson sent a telegram to Croker as follows: “Horse at Kildare Railway Station, collect” Boss Croker had purchased 120 acres at Glencairn near Leopardstown. He brought Orby to Glencairn and installed Colonel Frederick McCabe to train his string with Head Lad James Allen holding the trainer’s license. Orby began his 3-year-old career with an impressive win in the Earl of Sefton Plate in Liverpool, followed by an easy success in the Baldoyle Derby. He was backed down from 66/1 to 100/6 for the Epsom Derby. Thousands of Irish punters backed him in the hope he could be the first Irish trained winner of the race. Croker had his doubts about Orby staying the one and a half miles at Epsom but Colonel McCabe convinced him to let him take his chance. Croker insisted a first-rate jockey be engaged so Johnny Reiff, an American jockey who was riding in France at the time, was brought over to take the mount. He was an outsider and given very little chance. As William Allison, correspondent for the Sportsman commented, “The turf in Ireland has no spring in it, the climate is too depressing, and no Irish trainer knows enough to even dare compete for the greatest race in the World.”

In the race Orby took up the running 2 furlongs out, winning by 2 lengths. He returned to Ireland to an incredibl ereception. The Irish had finally gotten their Epsom Derby winner. Bonfires were lit and Orby was paraded through the streets of Dublin preceded by a brass band. An old lady pushed through the crowds, grabbed Colonel McCabe’s hand and said; “Thank God and you sir. We have lived to see a Catholic horse win the Derby”. So Orby became the first Irish trained horse to win the blue ribbon of the turf. The Irish Times reported; “It was a triumph for an island, which in its small compass contains a larger percentage of horse lovers than any country on the face of the world.” Orby was then prepared for the1907 Irish Derby at The Curragh. Record crowds attended to view the Irish Champion. Despite pleas from Colonel McCabe who was concerned about Orby’s fragile front legs and the hard ground on The Curragh Croker insisted he run. Orby won easily by 4 lengths at odds of 1/10 – the shortest priced winner of the Irish Derby, however the ground had taken its toll and he returned lame. After his success at Epsom, Orby’s owner Richard ‘Boss’ Croker contacted the Irish Turf Club and offered to fund the Irish Derby prize money for the same amount as he won at Epsom Derby on the condition he be appointed a member of the Turf Club. The prize money for the Epsom Derby was 6,500 Guineas compared to 788 Guineas for the Irish Derby. His letter was accompanied by a case of champagne. The Turf Club declined his offer but kept the champagne. The following month Orby could only finish fourth in Liverpool. And so ended the career of one of the most famous horses ever trained in Ireland. He retired to stud and was a successful sire, his offspring Grand Parade winning the Epsom Derby. Orby is buried in Glencairn beside his dam, Rhoda B. After Orby’s victory in Epsom in 1907 it was a further 51 years before an Irish trained horse won the Epsom Derby when Hard Ridden trained on the Curragh by J.M. “Micky” Rogers was successful. The next Irish winner of both the Irish and Epsom Derbys was Santa Clause in 1964 also trained on the Curragh by J.M. “Micky” Rogers. Croker developed pneumonia and died of thrombosis in April 1922. As he lay on his death bed in his property in Glencairn in Dublin surrounded by his family his son is quoted as saying “Don’t worry Father you are going to a better place.” To which Croker replied, “I doubt it.” To this day, in certain parts of the country, the saying exists, “I doubt it says Croker.” The Curragh would like to thank Jim Kavanagh for his research in putting the Orby story together.

CURRAGH COMMENT Top-rated Patrick Sarsfield holds the pick of the form in the race after finishing second to a subsequent Group 1 winner at Longchamp in testing conditions last October. That said, he faces an uphill battle having to give over a stone away to the progressive three-year-old LOUGH DERG, who was only denied the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial by the well-fancied Derby contender, Bolshoi Ballet. Depsite finishing six lengths behind the winner, the son of Galileo hit the line strong and gets the vote to land his second career victory, while the Frankel colt O’reilly will aiming to live up to his 260,000gns price tag after running on into second at Cork last time out.

THE SKY BET RACE TO THE EBOR HANDICAP Today sees the second running of the Sky Bet Race To The Ebor Handicap which leads to the Sky Bet Ebor, held at York in August. While Irish domination in British handicaps would tend to throw up fond memories of Cheltenham Festival glory, the Irish have a fine record in the Sky Bet Ebor, with Mustajeer winning the race in style in 2019. Back in 2001 the Aidan O’Brien-trained Mediterranean was guided home under Mick Kinane and since 2010 Irish trainers have performed well in the prestigious handicap.

Mustajeer

Dirar landed the 2010 renewal for Gordon Elliott under a fine Jamie Spencer ride and since that win a host of Irish trainers have sent their fine stayers to contest the race on the Knavesmire. In 2011 the David Wachman-trained Mount Athos could only manage eighth under Wayne Lordan, but Royal Diamond came within a neck of winning the race in a year later for Thomas Carmody and Niall McCullagh, only to be denied by Frankie Dettori aboard Willing Foe. Ted Veale was well backed for Tony Martin in 2013 and was rather unlucky to finish only fourth under Fran Berry, but Mutual Regard put up a fine performance to win in 2014 under then five pound claimer Louis Steward for Johnny Murtagh.

Mutual Regard

The much missed Wicklow Brave ran a superb race to finish second to a big outsider in 2015, with subsequent St Leger third Fields Of Athenry back in fifth under Donnacha O’Brien.

2016 saw a fairytale winner, as the Tony Martin-trained Heartbreak City landed a fine touch under Adam McNamara, winning by a huge four lengths in the ultra competitive handicap following a win in a handicap hurdle at Galway a month prior. A great story and Heartbreak City success for connections, Tony Martin also saddled the third, Quick Jack, under Oisin Orr. Heartbreak City would go on to be beaten only a head in the Melbourne Cup 2017 drew a blank for the Irish, with the Willie Mullins-trained Ivan Grozny only able to finish 15th under Jim Crowley as the sole Irish representative in the race. Jarlath Fahey got in on the action in 2018 when saddling Sea The Lion to finish third under Ronan Whelan, with a certain Mustajeer a neck behind in fourth. Mustajeer overcame the draw in stall 2 to win the contest under Colin Keane in 2019, before moving to Australia with trainer Kris Lees. Last year’s running of the Sky Bet Ebor Trial Handicap was won by the Jessica Harrington-trained Lynwood Gold as Tom Madden made good use of the five-year-old’s proven stamina. Take a look back at last year’s renewal.

CURRAGH COMMENT CHIRICAHUA won’t be done improving yet, having gained the success his Dundalk third in March deserved when upped to this trip at Killarney last time. He obviously has more on his plate today, though there were some smart types trained by Willie Mullins in opposition at Killarney, but there is reason to believe he is well treated off 91 and there might be more to come over such distances. Shanroe is 2-4 on the level and makes a good bit of appeal, while Camphor and Barbados, fourth in the Irish St. Leger here last September, won’t be far away.

CURRAGH COMMENT The return to a sixth furlong should suit Trueba, who ran a solid race when fourth over shorter at Naasand, and he looks to have a sold chance off the same mark. He could be the main danger to ELEUTHERA, who has been going close recently including a solid second off this mark at Navan. Today could be his day with Melanie Horsman’s 10lb claim a bonus, leaving Teddy Boy for the minor placing.
