The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. TOP TIPS RACE ONE

The Mark Johnston-trained KING FRANKEL will likely be a warm order to begin Cazoo Derby Day with a win, after a good second last time out in the London Gold Cup at Newbury. Given he ﬁnished so far clear of the rest of that useful ﬁeld, it should take a good one to beat him. Perhaps the course experience of Patient Dream will be the biggest threat, while Greatgadian has more to come.

RACE TWO

An open-looking renewal can go to Matyn Meade’s three-year-old, STATEMENT, last seen finishing eighth in the 1000 Guineas. The form of her second in the Fred Darling may be enough to take this in receipt of a significant three-year-old weight allowance. Illykato gets that same allowance and Mick Channon’s charge was a good winner at Listed level last time, so is a threat alongside the five-year-olds Maamora and Posted.

RACE THREE

With Maximal’s defection due to yesterday’s rain, the classy older horses, CENTURY DREAM, Prince Eiji and Duke Of Hazzard can be the ones to battle out the ﬁnish here, with preference for the Simon & Ed Crisford-trained seven-year-old. He wasn’t sighted in the Lockinge, but will have come on for that and should go close again at this level having won this race last year.

RACE FOUR

20 sprinters scamper down the hill here and in a traditionally tricky puzzle to solve, it could pay to side with YIMOU, who was unlucky when third at Newmarket in May and is 2lb lower in the weights than when third in the Portland at the end of last season. What a story it would be if any of the trio of twelve-year-olds, Caspian Prince, Duke Of Firenze and Pettochside, could make their presence felt!

RACE FIVE

A fascinating running of the Cazoo Derby sees the well-fancied Bolshoi Ballet head the market, and with good reason, as the mighty Aidan O’Brien’s only runner. However, at a short price, perhaps we can look to take him on with the unbeaten HURRICANE LANE, who is a straightforward sort who has done everything asked of him so far by the Charlie Appleby team. It would also be foolish to rule out Mac Swiney for the shrewd Bolger outﬁt.

RACE SIX

After a decent second to the impressive Louganini at Ascot last time out, GROUP ONE POWER looks a winner-in-waiting from just a 2lb higher mark for the King Power and Andrew Balding teams. His defeat of Soto Sizzler here in April reads well and even though that rival could be a huge threat, the four-year-old might just have improved wnough since to keep him at bay. The Trader will likely be right up there throughout and can also be involved at the ﬁnish.

RACE SEVEN

An extremely competitive handicap to close out Investec Derby Day and the six-furlong contest can go to the Ian Williams-trained EJTILAAB, who drops back to sprinting here after a good second over seven furlongs to the rapidly upwardly-mobile Boardman at Chester last time. He’ll make a bold bid from the front - the likes of Kimiﬁve and Desert Safari can chase him home.

Andrew Cooper, Head of Racing and Clerk of the Course at Epsom Downs and Sandown Park, celebrates 25 years in charge of the track at The Cazoo Derby Festival in 2021.

Cooper and his team undertake many roles in the build-up to and during the Cazoo Derby Festival, including but not limited to ensuring the racing surface is in the best possible condition. Speaking about the importance of The Cazoo Derby Festival to him and his team, Cooper said: “It never fails to get hold of you I find and the

team will say the same. I’m involved in some brilliant races through the year, but there is nothing that matches the anticipation, the build-up and the delivery of The Cazoo Derby. “All of us at Epsom Downs feel that in some years the build-up is easier than others and the weather is a big factor in that. But it’s fascinating just to see these horses that you’ve had

your eye on as two year olds or even since they were entered as yearlings develop into Derby candidates. To follow the trial series and do mornings like ‘Breakfast with the Stars’ is just great and it’s a wonderful race to be involved with.” The COVID-19 pandemic has brought with it huge challenges to everyone in racing but Cooper is justifiably proud that a Derby and an Oaks were staged in 2020, albeit a month later than usual on July 5th. He continued: “I think there was a huge and overriding satisfaction from the team at Epsom Downs to stage a Derby and an Oaks last year. It was different but this is a complex venue with additional complications in terms of the nature and the land and what we can do here, so the overriding feeling was that it was just marvellous that The Derby took place at its rightful home – admittedly a month later than usual. “It was the first time in the history of the races that both the Oaks and The Derby were run on the same day but it is great to be back to what in the current thinking is the correct format of the meeting. “One of the strangest elements of any race meeting that we’ve been running over the last 12-14 months or so is the lack of a crowd and the complete silence as a horse enters the parade ring and so on. You will notice that there is an audience here, it will be respecting all the protocols but it will bring an atmosphere that certainly has been lacking.” Cooper began his role in 1996, when The Derby went to Shaamit. Since then a galaxy of superstars have graced the Epsom Downs track, giving him more than a few highlights

to reflect on. He said: “There’s always an element of looking back on these things and looking at how horses have gone on both as racehorses and as stallions to a degree, but I always say that I never separate Galileo and Sea The Stars as my two favourite Derby winners. “Galileo’s Derby was on pretty quick ground actually, it was proper Good to Firm in my view and I was quite anxious about it on Oaks night. We had a bit of a conundrum about whether to irrigate or not but we left it alone and Galileo skipped round and absolutely loved it. “With Sea The Stars, the ground was fine and Good and I’d never seen such a laidback horse as him in the preliminaries, but that was his nature and he’d go on and do the exact same thing in the Coral-Eclipse. “Having been here such a long time it’s as much with both of those horses about seeing what their progeny go on to do and I find it so satisfying that with Galileo’s five Derby winners (plus one as a sire of sires) and with Sea The Stars siring Harzand and Taghrooda, it just emphasis the lasting legacy of these great races.”

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY King Frankel has been a model of consistency already this term, following up a Pontefract second with a 32-length win in a small field at the same venue. He took the step up in class for the London Gold Cup at Newbury in his stride when finding only one too good and has to be considered. It may be worth taking him on with the course experience of PATIENT DREAM here though. Ralph Beckett’s showed a real liking for this idiosyncratic venue when successful over shorter last time and the step up in trip could help him overcome a 7lb hike. Freak Out is interesting if he stays, while Greatgadian was a shade disappointing on his handicap bow but wasn’t stopping over Sandown’s 10 furlongs there.

PREMIER CLASSIC Few who follow horseracing in the 21st Century will know much about ‘Gentleman’ Johnny Burgoyne. In 1776 the soldier, playwright and politician who married into the Derby family and had passed on the lease of his Surrey mansion, the Oaks, to the 12th Earl of Derby, Edward Smith-Stanley, urged his friend to introduce a race for three-year-old fillies over a mile and a half to emulate old comrade in arms Anthony St Leger, founder of the St Leger at Doncaster.

Three years later, on May 14th 1779, the Downs above the spa town of Epsom, hosted the inaugural running of the Oaks. Appropriately, Lord Derby’s Bridget was victorious. At a celebratory party that evening, Burgoyne proposed, because the Oaks had been such a great success, a similar race should be founded for both colts and fillies. Sir Charles Bunbury, a distinguished figure in the world of horseracing, was behind the concept of racing over a mile or a mile and a half. Legend has it that Bunbury and Derby discussed the possibility and all that was left was to name the race. Apparently, it was the toss of a coin in the latter’s favour that secured the race title, which started a worldwide franchise and lives on as strongly as ever. On May 4th 1780, the inaugural Derby Stakes was run for £1,065 15s. Despite losing the flip of the coin, Bunbury gained some compensation when Diomed carried his silks to success in the race, which was staged over a mile. The distance was changed to the present mile and a half in 1784. The Derby, a supreme challenge for three year olds over the unique undulating Epsom Downs track, remains the most prestigious Flat race in the world and will be staged for the 242nd time in 2021 and sponsored for the first time by Cazoo. This year we recognise some significant Derby anniversaries. It is 20 years since Galileo handed trainer Aidan O’Brien the first of his record nine Derby winners. The son of Sadler’s Wells has followed

in the footsteps of his sire and his grandsire, Northern Dancer, to become the greatest stallion of his or indeed virtually any generation, siring a record five Derby winners to date. It was 40 years ago, in 1981, that the Aga Khan’s Shergar was partnered to a record 10-length victory by 19-year-old Walter Swinburn. Trained by Michael Stoute, Shergar went on to prove himself the best of his generation with stunning victories in the Irish Derby and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Valued at £10 million, the colt retired to Ballymany Stud in Ireland but on February 8th 1983, hooded gunmen seized him and demanded a £2 million ransom, which was refused. His fate remains a mystery. Mill Reef bounced back from his defeat in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket by Brigadier Gerard to take The Derby impressively 50 years ago, in 1971. He remained unbeaten for the rest of the campaign and went on to win the Eclipse, King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, becoming the only horse in history to win these four races in the same season. EPSOM RACE SUMMARY Illykato relished the step up to a mile when hitting the line strong to win at Goodwood on her latest outing and warrants serious interest, however, last year’s winner Summer Romance finished eighth in the 1000 Guineas on her last run and STATEMENT gets the vote to repeat that trend. The Derby course over 12 furlongs and 10 yards at Epsom Downs is in the rough shape of a horseshoe. From the start, 360 feet above sea level, there is a slight right-handed bend and a rise of 134 feet sweeping left until the top of the hill. A left-hand descent of 34 feet around Tattenham Corner leads into the cambered straight where there is a 50 feet drop until half a furlong out where the ground level rises by 10 feet.

REMEMBERING

Pat Smullen 1977-2020 It is hard to believe it is five years since Harzand’s Derby success in 2016. Even on the morning of the race itself the son of Sea The Stars looked an unlikely participant, due to a shoe becoming dislodged during the journey over from Ireland to Epsom Downs. However, keeping the colt’s affected foot in a bucket of ice and some incredible handiwork from vet Jim Reilly ensured the colt was able to take his place in the starting stalls.

The 13-2 third favourite, Harzand was well-positioned throughout and after taking up the running entering the final furlong he stayed on resolutely to hand a fifth Derby victory to his owner-breeder Aga Khan IV and a first for trainer Dermot Weld. Another man enjoying a first taste of success in The Derby that day was Harzand’s jockey, Pat Smullen. Tragically, less than two years later Pat would be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Far from resting on his laurels, the nine-time Champion Jockey in Ireland threw himself wholeheartedly into the battle against the disease. His fundraising efforts yielded over €2.5 million and were headlined by the Pat Smullen Champions Race for Cancer Trials Ireland, which saw nine former superstar jockeys including Sir AP McCoy, Ruby Walsh and Johnny Murtagh return to the saddle for a special contest at the Curragh in September 2019. Pat was even present on course to witness Sir AP McCoy take the spoils. Honest and matter of fact in everything he did, Smullen said at the Curragh: “You have to face it – what else do you do, lie down and give up? You can’t do that.” The support he received from the racing community highlighted the respect the sport and its participants showed him, but even in such adverse circumstances Smullen was quick to deflect away from his own fundraising achievements. He added: “I have tremendous support from an amazing family and great friends. The support from everybody is unbelievable. The racing community has proved itself how it rallies around in times of need. It is just great to still be part of this great industry. I can’t thank everybody enough. “I can reassure everyone that every penny donated is going to a very worthy cause, which what we always set out to do – to make a difference.”

He was rightly recognised for his outstanding contribution to both racing and the fundraising for Cancer Trials Ireland when he was awarded the Cartier/Daily Telegraph Award of Merit at the Cartier Racing Awards, often referred to as “Racing’s Oscars”, in 2019. In the video produced to accompany the presentation of the award, he reminisced about his achievements in the saddle and nominated Harzand’s Derby success as his greatest victory. He said: “I was very fortunate to travel the world with Dermot (Weld) and we had a lot of success but if I had to pick one, it would be the Epsom Derby on Harzand. “When you start to dream of being a jockey, the first race that comes to your mind is the Epsom Derby, so to be able to achieve that was something very, very special.” Smullen sadly lost his battle with pancreatic cancer on September 15th last year. He was just 43 years old. Not only will that magic day on Epsom Downs five years ago never be forgotten, nor will Pat Smullen – a man who more than lived up to his own goal to “make a difference”.

Here at Epsom Downs we saw first-hand the amazing work the NHS, CSH Surrey, local GPs and a team of volunteers undertook to transform the ground floor of our Duchess’s Stand into a mass-vaccination centre. The centre opened its doors officially in mid-January and in four months vaccinated almost 200,000 people. The operation required a huge amount of time and dedication to manage and ran seven days a week. Fittingly, one of the first people to receive their vaccination was Geoff Lewis, a former jockey who won both

The Oaks and The Derby in 1971. Lewis, like so many of those who received their vaccinations at Epsom Downs, commented on how friendly the NHS staff were and how smooth the process was. The mass vaccination centre has now moved to a neighbouring Jockey Club racecourse, Sandown Park, where the team are continuing their tireless effort to vaccinate as many people as possible. The Jockey Club is proud to play a part in this extraordinary effort, but most of all, is grateful to the NHS teams and volunteers for the remarkable work that they do, day in, day out.

It is now 50 years since Mill Reef won the Derby, proving to those pedigree experts that doubted his ability to stay, that he really could be at his best over a mile and a half. Mill Reef, a handsome, strong, compact colt, was by Never Bend (second in the Kentucky Derby and third in the Preakness), out of the maiden Milan Mill, bred in America by his owner Paul Mellon. He was sent to England in December 1969, to be trained by Ian Balding at Kingsclere.

As a juvenile, he won five of his six starts and after taking Newbury’s Greenham Stakes as a three-year-old, he finished three lengths second to the great Brigadier Gerard in the 2000 Guineas. Mill Reef would now head to Epsom and despite his sires’ owner/breeder, Harry Guggenheim, strongly doubting Mill

Reef’s staying ability, the bookmakers sent him off the 100-30 favourite. On a warm day, under blue skies and after a long delay at the start – caused by Bourbon breaking his bridle – the 21 runners finally got on their way. Linden Tree took them along and led into the straight from Homeric, Lombardo and Mill Reef. Two furlongs out, Linden Tree was still going strongly, but Homeric weakened and Lombardo soon gave way. Soon after, Mill Reef, with Geoff Lewis aboard, cruised up to the plucky Linden Tree and inside the distance, went on to win by two lengths, in 2 minutes 37.14 seconds. Mill Reef then won all his remaining starts, kicking off in the Eclipse Stakes when annihilating the French-trained Caro and lowering the Sandown Park course record. Next up, he won Ascot’s King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, then in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe he broke the Longchamp course record, defeating the popular French filly, Pistol Packer, by three lengths. Kept in training as a four-year-old, he won the Prix Ganay by a contemptuous 10 lengths and followed up by taking the Coronation Cup. Soon after, he contracted a virus infection, missing his second Eclipse Stakes. Then, sustaining a swollen hock, he also missed the Benson and Hedges Gold Cup and so the long-awaited rematch with Brigadier Gerard failed to come off. The tragic run continued, when on 30 August Mill Reef broke his near-foreleg while working at Kingsclere. The break was such that he could thankfully be saved and after a six-hour operation, involving the insertion of a steel plate in his leg, followed by six weeks in plaster, he fully recovered and retired to The National Stud in 1973. In 1977, his problems returned when he contracted contagious equine metritis.

As a result, he got only nine mares in foal. Nevertheless, two of the offspring proved exceptional: Fairy Footsteps won the 1000 Guineas and Glint of Gold went on to take six Group 1 races. The following year, when Shirley Heights won both the English and Irish Derby he became Champion Sire, and then again in 1987, when Reference Point won the Derby, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the St Leger. In 1988, he sired his fourth Classic winner when Doyoun won the 2000 Guineas. Furthermore, the line of three Derby winners – Mill Reef – Shirley Heights – Slip Anchor – not only gave Thoroughbred breeders access to his legacy, but has assured his place in history. EPSOM RACE SUMMARY Three-time winner Caspian Prince and 2019 victor Ornate have both struck from low draws and the latter in particular should ensure a strong pace on that side of the track, but it usually pays to focus on those drawn high. Stone Of Destiny is one such horse but his tendency to start slowly is a big negative, while Sunday Sovereign has claims on the form of his recent York second but appears happier on soft ground. Only Spoofing won well at Navan recently but is 9lb higher here, so COPPER KNIGHT gets the vote. A good winner at York two starts ago, he ran well for fifth on the Knavesmire despite soft ground last time and could be capable of another bold bid.

Serpentine (2020) and Anthony Van Dyck (2019) are two of the most recent, both being sons of the 2001 victor Galileo, while 2017’s winner, Wings Of Eagles, was sired by 2011 Derby winner, Pour Moi and 2018’s winner, Masar, was a son of 2008 Derby champion, New Approach.

Lester Ask the man in the street to name a jockey, there is a fair chance their response will be “Frankie”. But for those of a certain age it will always be “Lester”. Remarkably, this year sees the 70th anniversary of Lester Piggott’s first Derby ride in 1951. That year was the first time since before World War II that The Derby was run on its then-traditional Wednesday slot, with the ongoing Festival of Britain leading to a new mood of national optimism.

However, it was certainly an inauspicious start for the 15-year-old Piggott, as his 1951 mount Zucchero was left at the start - this was in the time of the old starting gate, as starting stalls were not utilised in The Derby until 1967. A talented if undoubtedly quirky performer,

Zucchero handed the young Piggott some compensation two years later in 1953 when providing him with the first of his record nine Coronation Cup victories at Epsom Downs. For Lester, the rest, of course, is history. He would go on to taste Derby success as an 18-year-old on Never Say Die in 1954 and go on to win the premier Classic eight more times with Crepello (1957), St Paddy (1960), Sir Ivor (1968), Nijinsky (1970), Roberto (1972), Empery (1976), The Minstrel (1977) and Teenoso (1983) adding to Never Say Die’s success. His nine Derby victories remain a record to this day and, as remarkable as Piggott’s success in the race was and still is, his sheer longevity is also unsurpassed. While the first of Piggott’s record 36 Derby rides was on Zucchero in 1951, his final appearance in the world’s greatest Flat race was when aged 58 in 1994 - the last Derby to be staged on a Wednesday). That day he partnered 33-1 chance Khamaseen to a fifth place finish.

When Piggott’s career in the saddle began, Sir Gordon Richards and Charlie Smirke were his contemporaries. When it ended he was pitched against Steve Cauthen and Frankie Dettori. From the days of black and white television and Prince Monolulu holding court on the racecourse with his retort of “I gotttta horse….” to the verge of today’s online information overload, “The Piggott Years” spanned a remarkable amount of time and change, whatever way you look at it. When he finally hung up his riding boots, the jockey was commemorated at Epsom Downs with the Lester Piggott Gates, which were officially unveiled by Her Majesty The Queen 25 years ago, on Derby Day in 1996. Later that afternoon, Shaamit landed the big race and was, appropriately, trained by Piggott’s son-in-law William Haggas.

Despite having just a Newmarket handicap victory from a mark of 85 to his name as a career highlight, the William Haggas-trained colt took the step up to Listed level in his stride and forced himself into the Cazoo Derby reckoning. Five lengths was the winning margin at the line and this son of the great Frankel could well still have plenty more to come - he’s an exciting contender that’s for sure.

The Dante is always a high-class Cazoo Derby trial and this year’s renewal could well have produced a horse who has it in him to go very close in the big one this afternoon. Hurricane Lane emerged victorious for the Godolphin team and Charlie Appleby, showing a turn of foot and a superb attitude under William Buick to fend of the smart Megallan and the late-closing High Definition.

In perhaps the most impressive effort so far from a Cazoo Derby contender, Bolshoi Ballet blew away his high-class competition for the all-conquering Aidan O’Brien team. Nudged to lead three furlongs from home by Ryan Moore, the son of Galileo quickened smartly and stayed on well over the ten furlong trip to put six lengths between him and the field at the line. If he stays these extra two furlongs, a performance like that will see him go very close this afternoon.

Lingfield’s Derby Trial has thrown up winners of the Cazoo Derby in recent years, such as Anthony Van Dyck in 2019, and Third Realm was an impressive winner of this year’s renewal for the Roger Varian team. Coming from last to first, theson of the great Sea The Stars showed a nice turn of foot and plenty of stamina to get the better of Godolphin’s Adayar, who was a close third in the Sandown Park Classic Trial on his previous start.

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY Bolshoi Ballet is going to be popular following recent victories in the Ballysax and Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial. That said, the strength of that form can be questioned and, while he merits plenty of respect, this is a very competitive Derby. With that in mind, preference is for MAC SWINEY, who was not right when beaten by Bolshoi Ballet in the Derrinstown. Either side of that defeat, the son of New Approach has won a pair of Group 1s, including the Irish 2,000 Guineas last time. Jim Bolger’s colt has to prove himself on a quicker surface but should relish this step up in trip. Mohaafeth has been progressive this year and created a big impression when winning the Newmarket Stakes over 1m2f last time. This step up in trip should not be a problem and he looks to have a very bright future.

40 YEARS ON

Shergar The first half of 1981 was momentous for racing and indeed sport in general in Britain.

Beginning at the Cheltenham Festival, where 11-year-old Sea Pigeon claimed his second Champion Hurdle under a masterful John Francome ride, to the first-ever London Marathon, to Bob Champion and Aldaniti overcoming all the odds at Aintree to win the Grand National and on to Ricky Villa’s mastery for Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup Final replay, it truly had it all. That remarkable

sporting year would continue in no uncertain terms at Epsom Downs thanks to a horse called Shergar.

Trained by Michael Stoute in Newmarket, Shergar won impressively on his first start as a two-year-old at Newbury, before finishing second to the more experienced Beldale Flutter on his only other juvenile outing in the Futurity Stakes at Doncaster.

Having been rated 31st among his peers in the 1980 European Free Handicap, Shergar commenced his Classic season as a 33-1 ante-post chance for The Derby. Those odds tumbled after a 10-length victory in Sandown Park’s Classic Trial was followed by a 12-length demolition job in the Chester Vase. Shergar lined up at Epsom Downs as the 10-11 favourite for Derby glory, where he would be partnered by 19-year-old Walter Swinburn. He did not disappoint his supporters as he once again accelerated away from his rivals to register a stunning 10-length success - the widest winning margin in the long history of the premier Classic. Given the unprecedented winning margin, jockey John Mathias, who was aboard secondplaced Glint Of Gold, famously thought he had won! With The Derby in the bag, Shergar went to the Curragh and added the Irish Derby by four lengths before routing his elders by the same distance in Britain’s premier all-age middle-distance contest, the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot. The stage was set for an autumn hurrah in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp but in an unexpected twist, connections decided to take in the St Leger at Doncaster. He could fare no better than fourth in the final Classic, with connections in agreement that Shergar’s magic from earlier in the season had deserted him.

That defeat was to be Shergar’s final race. With a lofty Timeform rating of 140 and valued at £10 million, the colt retired to the Aga Khan’s Ballymany Stud in Ireland. However, in what was to make headlines across the world, hooded gunmen seized the stallion on February 8th 1983, with a £2million ransom demanded and subsequently refused. Despite numerous articles, documentaries and conspiracy theories, Shergar’s fate remains a mystery. Tragically, Shergar’s jockey Walter Swinburn, who also won The Derby on Shahrastani (1986) and Lammtarra (1995), died as a result of an accident aged 55 in 2016. For all that has followed in the ensuing 40 years, that gloriously sunny afternoon of June 3rd 1981 at Epsom Downs and Shergar’s electrifying performance will never be forgotten.

J O E M ER C ER H o r s e r a c i n g mourned the loss of one of its true greats in the build-up to this year’s Cazoo Derby Festival following the passing of champion jockey Joe Mercer OBE. Mercer’s death at the age of 86 was announced on May 17th. With a total of 2,810 winners in the UK during a career spanning 36 seasons, Mercer partnered eight Classic winners in total, with the great Brigadier Gerard’s success in the 2,000 Guineas of 1971 his clear standout victory.

REMEMBERING

Joe Mercer OBE 1934-2021

The first of Mercer’s Classic winners came while still an apprentice on Ambiguity in the 1953 Oaks at Epsom Downs. Trained by Jack Colling for owner the 3rd Viscount Astor, Ambiguity was a filly of rare appearance, having four white feet and one eye that was pale blue in colour. As an 18-1 chance Ambiguity was a relatively unfancied Oaks contender, but after taking up the running a furlong from home there was no doubt about the winner as she stayed on powerfully to take the honours by a length under her 18-year-old jockey, Mercer. Although The Derby proved to be the one Classic to elude Mercer, he went close to success on two occasions. In 1959 he partnered Fidalgo to finish second, beaten a length by Parthia, who ironically was ridden by his father-in-law Harry Carr. And it was another 17 years before Mercer came that close to winning the world’s greatest Flat race again, finding only one rival too good when Relkino went down by three lengths to French raider Empery in 1976, the eighth of Lester Piggott’s record nine Derby winners. Away from the Derby and Oaks, the other Group One highlight at the Cazoo Derby Festival

is the Coronation Cup, which takes place over a mile and a half for four year olds and upwards. Mercer took this race in back-to-back years, starting with Buoy in 1974. In a race with no pace, Mercer decided to make the most of Buoy’s proven stamina and at one point was 10 lengths clear of his rivals. It proved to be a tactical masterclass of a ride as although Buoy tired in the closing stages he held on to win, with the notable scalp of champion mare Dahlia back in third. A year later it was Bustino who Mercer partnered to Coronation Cup success. A thoroughly genuine and courageous performer, Mercer had previously partnered Bustino to victory in the 1974 St Leger and the duo would famously finish the narrow runner-up to Grundy in the “Race of the Century” – the 1975 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot. Mercer retired from riding after making his final ride a winning one on Bold Rex in the 1984 November Handicap at Doncaster and for many years was a highly-respected racing manager for the late Maktoum Al Maktoum’s Gainsborough Stud. It was in this role that he finally tasted Derby success when Kris Kin, owned by Maktoum associate Saeed Suhail, won the 2003 renewal.

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY It often pays to be handy over this track and trip and therefore, this could go the way of DESERT SAFARI, who proved he was more than just a one trick pony when notching up a first turf success at Goodwood. He is only 4lb higher this time and won’t shy away from a battle at the business end. Lexington Dash was two lengths clear of Aberama Gold (second) at Doncaster last month and could have more to come, while the latter may appreciate the application of cheekpieces and is more than capable. The returning Danzeno is an ultra-consistent performer likely to be thereabouts at the finish, with Ejtilaab and Kimifive also noted dropping back in trip.
