A warm welcome to Epsom Downs Racecourse, for the first day of the Derby Festival, Ladies Day, featuring the Group One Betfred Oaks.
We would like to extend our thanks to our new partners Betfred for their sponsorship over the two days; their support of British racing has been longstanding and we are delighted to have them as partners at one of the premier Flat racing meetings globally.
Our thanks also go to DahlBury for their continued support of the Group 1 Coronation Cup and Racehorse Lotto, the European Breeders Fund, Nyetimber and House of Cavani for their support across today’s card.
The Betfred Oaks is the third Classic of the turf season in Britain and is run over a mile and a half for three-year-old fillies. Older than the Derby by a year, the race holds one of the most esteemed rolls of honour for any race run in the world.
This year, we look forward to seeing Frankie Dettori, who holds the record in the race for current riders with six wins, looking to extend his tally in his swansong year For those that are joining us for the first time this year, we encourage you to head to the end of the Duchess Stand, where you will find a unique tribute to the great jockey as we say farewell and thank you to him from all at Epsom Downs.
Today also sees the latest running of The DahlBury Coronation Cup, one of the top middle-distance Flat races in the world. This year, a perpetual trophy from the 1902 running of the race will be presented to the winning owner. First made in 1902, prior to the Coronation of King Edward VII when it was re-named, we are delighted to be honouring the heritage of this historic race.
Beyond the thrilling races on the track, we are running The Style Awards, embracing the ever evolving and diverse world of raceday fashion, with marvellous prizes up for grabs. This year we have introduced a new interactive format for The Style Awards, inviting all our guests to participate by voting for their preferred winner; please head to our Facebook page from this Sunday to have your say.
Finally, you may well have read in the build-up to this year’s event about plans for potential disruption. We have as stringent and detailed a security operation as there has ever been in the 243 years of this event, but should disruption occur I would ask you to listen and look out for updates via screens around the course and please be patient as security and police teams deal with any incidents.
As we embark on this special weekend, on behalf of the Epsom Downs Committee I would like to extend our gratitude to all who have made it possible. I wish all the runners and their connections the very best of luck and hope you have a memorable Ladies Day.

This year’s renewal of the Woodcote looks as competitie as ever with seven previous winners in the line up. Debut winner Balon D’Or paid the price for a wide draw at Chester last time but it would be no surprise to see him bounce back today Bobsleigh picked up nicely to win at Brighton and could reward each-way support but overall preference is for THE CAMDEN COLT who impressed in a competitive Haydock maiden last time.
A wide open handicap where it may pay to side with AUSTRIAN THEORY who is now 4lb below his last winning mark. He ran creditably at Chester on ground that was softer than ideal and on quicker ground today he looks an obvious player. Fantastic Fox continues to drop down the weights but a return to this trip could bring about improvement All The King’s Men brings solid form into the race, as does recent Chester winner Revich.
Race of the season so far with four of the five runners previous Group 1 winners. HURRICANE LANE looked back to his best when winning the Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket and will appreciate the quicker ground. Irish Derby winner Westover looks to bounce back after a stint in Dubai whilst last year’s Oaks runner-up Emily Upjohn could benefit from her fillies allowance. Point Lonsdale and Tunnes aren’t ruled out either
A competitive handicap where it might be worth taking a chance on DUAL IDENTITY who wasn’t beaten far by the reopposing Honiton at Newmarket last time but meets that rival on 5lb better terms. Marhaba The Champ bounced back to land a competitive York handicap last month and with few miles on the clock, still looks open to improvement. Savvy Victory will have plenty of supporters whilst Masekela could outrun his odds.
It is very difficult to look beyond SAVETHELASTDANCE who produced a dazzling display to win the Cheshire Oaks by a staggering 22 lengths - a winning distance rarely seen in flat racing. But this isn’t a one horse race The Gosden pair Soul Sister and Running Lion both impressed when winning last time out whilst Godolphin’s Eternal Hope is another that can’t be ruled out lightly. Maman Joon could surprise a few at a big price.
HOLGUIN was beaten by only a neck on both of his starts this season, the latter in a Listed race at Haydock last month. Andrew Balding’s colt has some solid form and deserves to get his head in front. Streets Of Gold flattered to decieve in the Greenham but also brings some solid juvenile form to the table and a recent breathing operation could see him bounce back to form. Secret Angel is another with good form in the book.
Ladies Day concludes with a wide-open seven furlong handicap where a case could be made for most of the runners. A tentative vote goes to ON A SESSION who cashed in off a reduced handicap mark at Musselburgh before running into a good one at Chester last time. The lightly-raced Clochette could still have improvement to come whilst the recent Goodwood winner Urban Sprawl has obvious claims despite a 6lb penalty.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

10 YEARS AGO – Trainer Ralph Beckett saddles the first two home, with 20-1 chance Talent getting the better of her better-fancied stablemate Secret Gesture. It was a second Classic success for jockey Richard Hughes after Sky Lantern’s 1000 Guineas victory earlier in the season.

FANCY THAT: R Hannon won this race in 2014 and 2016. The stable runs HAATEM and THE CAMDEN COLT today.
LONGEST TRAVELLER: VALOUR AND SWAGGER trained by K R Burke, Leyburn, 259 miles.
VALOUR AND SWAGGER was an impressive winner on debut at Windsor before attempting to give 3lb and upwards to his rivals when finishing second in what appeared to be a warm contest at Ascot. The extra furlong is unlikely to be a concern and he is taken to continue the stable's fine run of form in this division. Balon D'or shaped well from a bad draw when third at Chester and warrants plenty of respect, with the Richard Hannon pair Haatem and The Camden Colt appealing most of the remainder.
WIN: VALOUR AND SWAGGER EACH-WAY: Balon D'or

The photo-finish camera decided the Derby result for the first time in 1949 when Nimbus landed the spoils by a head from French raider Amour Drake.
“It’s not just my dream – it is the dream of every jockey on the planet. Everybody wants to win The Derby because it is simply the best race in the world.”
Frankie Dettori announced at the end of last year that 2023 would be his last season in the saddle, bringing to a close a remarkable career which has spanned almost 40 years.
To celebrate his time in the saddle, Epsom Downs and The Jockey Club commissioned a leading street art specialist, MurWalls, to create a giant mural on the side of the Duchess Stand at the Surrey track. Depicting him in the colours of his 2015 Derby winner Golden Horn, the artwork stretches across the side of the stand, measuring 52ft by 23ft.
Unveiled at the Spring Meeting in April, Dettori admitted he was “gobsmacked” by the piece, as he looks forward to his last ride in the Betfred Derby. Asked what it would mean to win the race in his final year, he said “It would be amazing. I’m trying to enjoy every moment of my last year, that’s why I gave myself a year, more or less, to enjoy it.
“I have mixed feelings. It’s the end of an era, and it’s nice to be recognised with something as big as this. Epsom is a special place for me. I’ve had some great memories, lots of nice winners – two Derby wins, five Coronation Cups, five Oaks. It’s been a good stomping ground for me.”

A case can be made for plenty of these but marginal preference is for FANTASTIC FOX, who is 5lb lower than when third in this race last year. His two efforts this year over 1m2f have both suggested that a drop back in trip would suit the son of Frankel. Revich finished a place in front of the selection 12 months ago and is an obvious threat following his Chester success three weeks ago. Others to note are All The King's Men and Rhoscolyn.

Staged over the same mile and a half course as the Oaks and the Derby but for horses aged four and older, the Coronation Cup first took place in 1902, replacing a similar race, the Epsom Gold Cup. The race was re-named to celebrate the accession to the throne of King Edward VII, who enjoyed three victories in the Derby thanks to Persimmon (1896), Diamond Jubilee (1900) and Minoru (1909).
Edward VII was the Queen’s great grandfather, and her only equal as sovereign in his passion for racing. In the year we celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III, it is apt that a perpetual trophy from before the race was renamed will be presented to the winning owner today. The Epsom Cup has lived in the Jockey Club Rooms in Newmarket since 1902.
This year, DahlBury will continue their support of the Derby Festival as the sponsor of the Group One race, held today. A brand passionate about honouring Thoroughbred racehorse heritage, preserving its legacy, and nurturing the future generations here within Great Britain, DahlBury was founded by Simon and Rhian Davies. The operation’s stallion roster stands at Chapel Stud in Worcestershire, and includes Planteur, the sire of 2021 Cartier Champion Stayer and dual Group One scorer Trueshan.
Rhian Davies, co-founder of DahlBury, commented:
“DahlBury are delighted to continue their association and support, of the DahlBury Coronation Cup in the year of the Coronation of our new King This is a day we feel encompasses our brand values, whilst maintaining the heritage that is involved with British horse racing.”

Just five runners line up for this valuable Group 1 prize, but the small field doesn't make this an easy puzzle to solve, with the vote going to EMILY UPJOHN. John and Thady Gosden's filly was a very good winner at Ascot on Champions Day in October and if returning to the track in similar form, she will take the beating in this contest. Hurricane Lane has already had a few runs this season and bounced back when scoring over 1m 4f at Newmarket when last seen, while last year's Derby third Westover also commands respect.

William Buick Rob HornbyOlder than The Derby by a year, The Oaks was the brainchild of Johnny Burgoyne, a soldier, playwright and politician who married into Lord Derby’s family.
Burgoyne had passed on the lease for his Surrey mansion, the Oaks, to his nephew, the 12th Earl of Derby, and persuaded the nobleman to create a race over a mile and a half for three-year-old fillies in response to the St Leger, which had been founded at Doncaster as a two-mile contest for colts of the same age in 1776.
The first Oaks, named after the nearby house, took place in 1779. The winner was Lord Derby’s Bridget, whose sire Herod was also responsible for Faith, successful in the fillies’ Classic two years later, and the 1783 victor Maid Of The Oaks.
In 1801, Eleanor was the first horse to win the Derby and triumph in the Oaks the very next day. The filly’s trainer, Mr Cox, died shortly before both Classics and his last words were recorded as “Depend on it, that Eleanor is a hell of a mare”.
Fully 56 years after Eleanor, Blink Bonny became the second filly to complete the Derby-Oaks double when she prevailed in 1857.
In 1902, Sceptre captured both the 1000 and 2000 Guineas at Newmarket before finishing fourth in the Derby following an interrupted preparation. Trained by owner, journalist and adventurer Robert Sievier, the very talented filly returned to form with a resounding victory in the Oaks two days later. She went on to capture the St Leger, becoming the only horse to win four British Classics.
Pretty Polly triumphed on all nine of her starts as a two-year-old and started the 1904 campaign with victory in the 1000 Guineas before going on to succeed in both the Oaks - when the shortest-priced winner ever at 8/100 - and the St Leger for the fillies’ Triple Crown. One of the greatest-ever fillies, Pretty Polly was victorious 22 times from 24 races and had a huge impact on the thoroughbred in career as a broodmare.
Signorinetta became the third filly to complete the Derby-Oaks double in 1908, belying a starting price of 100/1 against the colts, while Fifinella was the last filly to manage the Classic double in 1916, when both races were held at Newmarket due to the First World War.
Sun Chariot triumphed in the 1942 Oaks, run at Newmarket during World War II, despite giving the rest of the field a furlong start when slowly away. The filly,
leased to the monarch King George VI for her racing career by the Irish National Stud, won both the 1000 Guineas and the St Leger in impressive fashion to claim the fillies’ Triple Crown This feat was emulated by Meld in 1955 and Oh So Sharp in 1985.
The 100/8 chance Carrozza, trained by Sir Noel Murless and partnered by Lester Piggott who had combined to win the Derby with Crepello two days beforehand, became the initial Classic winner for Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II when successful in the 1957 renewal of the Oaks. The Queen enjoyed a tremendous second Oaks success in her Silver Jubilee year of 1977, when Dunfermline triumphed before going on to win the final Classic, the St Leger.
There were emotional scenes in the winner’s enclosure in 2007 when the Ted Durcan-ridden Light Shift provided the late Sir Henry Cecil an eighth victory in the Oaks The 2014 Oaks was run in memory of Sir Henry, one of British racing’s most influential and successful trainers of all time, who died on June 11, 2013 after a long battle with cancer.
In recent years, Enable was a brilliant winner in 2017 for John Gosden, Frankie Dettori and Khalid Abdullah. Her Epsom Downs success was the beginning of a five-race winning streak at G1 level in 2017 that included impressive victories in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp, making her the first Oaks winner to land Europe’s premier all-aged race.
In 2018, Enable went on to win a second Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe while she also became the first Oaks heroine to win the Breeders’ Cup Turf when successful at Churchill Downs in November. She also won Ascot’s King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes a record three times – 2017, 2019 and 2020.
Along with the Betfred Derby and DahlBury Coronation Cup at The Derby Festival, the Betfred Oaks forms part of the QIPCO British Champions Series.

In addition to the titles, prestige, and prize money, the 2023 classic winning owners will also receive a photography commission of their winning horse from renowned portrait photographer Tom Shaw. Shaw, who has photographed some of the world’s biggest sports stars, photographs horses in the style of legendary equine artist George Stubbs. The idea was born during a late summer drive in the Cotswolds where the evening sun gently raked across the idyllic countryside, mirroring the backdrops that Stubbs often used in his paintings.

The Howden Pretty Polly Stakes
Newmarket
Sunday 7th May
Since gaining her first experience on the track, Running Lion has been a force to be reckoned with. By the excellent Roaring Lion and a half-sister to the Group 3 winning Majestic Glory, she contested a hot maiden on debut at the Newmarket July Festival before going on to win three races on All-Weather There was plenty of buzz around the Charlie Appleby-trained Queen Of Fairies in the Howden Pretty Polly Stakes but she could only finish a remote fifth and Running Lion oozed class to land this Listed contest by four and a half lengths under Oisin Murphy. John and Thady Gosden’s filly has yet to tackle this trip but still remains a leading contender.
The Weatherbys Bloodstock Pro Cheshire Oaks
Chester
Wednesday 10th May
A sole run as a two-year-old when fifth on debut at Thurles, Savethelastdance has looked much improved this season. The daughter of Galileo has been very steadily brought along by the master trainer, Aidan O’Brien, who has won this race for the last three years.Abig-priced winner on her return to action in a fillies maiden at Leopardstown on heavy ground, it was her run in the The Weatherbys Digital Solutions Cheshire Oaks that took people’s breath away. The strong fancy for the race did not disappoint and won by a wide-margin of 22 lengths, a distance rarely seen at this level on the Flat. She should have no issues staying the extra half a furlong but hasn’t raced on better ground than soft.
The Fitzdares Oaks Trial Fillies’ Stakes
Lingfield Park
Saturday 13th May
With Godolphin landing the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket with Mawj, it would be tough to not give Charlie Appleby’s charge a mention and Eternal Hope makes plenty of appeal. Not seen until the age of three, she ran with plenty of zest on debut before going on to land her second start at Chelmsford. She made a significant step forward since her last success, landing the Fitzdares Oaks Trial Fillies’ Stakes from the well-fancied Be Happy, who could also feature in the finish today. Out of a mare who is a half-sister to Rio De La Plata, she has a nice pedigree and can’t be dismissed for a yard who have been flying all season.
The Tattersalls Musidora Stakes
York
Wednesday 17th May
Although Musidora winners haven’t got the greatest success rate in the Betfred Oaks, this daughter of Frankel looks a serious contender. ItwouldcomeasnosurpriseshouldFrankieDettorisaveonelastdance and come away successful again in this race and Soul Sister could be the key to victory. A winner at Doncaster on debut, the drop back to seven furlongs did her no favours when contesting the Fred Darling at Newbury, finishing last However, she bounced back with courage to take the The Tattersalls Musidora Stakes by storm, under Frankie Dettori, taking the better ground and step up in trip in her stride. She represents top connections and should see out this distance.

TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): A O’Brien (14 wins from 38 runners, 37%) runs BE HAPPY, RED RIDING HOOD and SAVETHELASTDANCE
FANCY THAT: A O’Brien won this race in 2015, 2016, 2018, 2020, 2021 and 2022. The stable runs BE HAPPY, RED RIDING HOOD and SAVETHELASTDANCE today. J & T Gosden won this race in 2014, 2017 and 2019. The stable runs RUNNING LION and SOUL SISTER today.
LONGEST TRAVELLERS: BE HAPPY & SAVETHELASTDANCE & RED RIDING HOOD trained by A O’Brien, Ireland.
Aidan O'Brien's recent record in the race is impressive and he looks to have another very smart filly on his hands in the shape of SAVETHELASTDANCE. A daughter of Galileo, like three of the last four winners of this Classic, she ticks all the right boxes after bolting up in the Cheshire Oaks last time out. A taking winner of the Musidora, Soul Sister looks to be her main danger and, being by Frankel, she should relish the step up in trip under Frankie Dettori. Stablemate Running Lion made a fine impression herself in the Pretty Polly and is another key player, along with Eternal Hope and 1000 Guineas fourth Caernarfon.
WIN: SAVETHELASTDANCE
EACH-WAY: Soul Sister

TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): R Beckett (10 wins from 46 runners, 22%) runs DANDY ALYS
LONGEST TRAVELLER: SECRET ANGEL trained by K R Burke, Leyburn, 259 miles.
Olivia Maralda emerged with credit following her run in the 1000 Guineas, when finishing seventh to Mawj, and Roger Varian's filly, who didn't appear to see out a mile on that occasion, is entitled to be very competitive back at 7f. Holguin's second at Haydock last time was a fine effort and another strong display is expected, but the vote goes to STREETS OF GOLD. Unbeaten in five starts as a juvenile, the ground was probably too testing in the Greenham at Newbury and subsequent wind surgery may also yield some improvement.
EACH-WAY: Olivia Maralda

This is a very open contest on paper with the nod going to SPANISH STAR. Patrick Chamings' runner was a very good second on his previous outing over 6f at Windsor, where he was beaten just three quarters of a length, and this extra yardage could be the perfect tonic. Urban Sprawl is feared most after his front running success over 7f at Goodwood last week, while Lord Rapscallion, a winner at Newmarket last time, and handicap debutant Clochette head the remainder.
