LIVE MUSIC AFTER RACING
A very warm welcome to Epsom Downs for Betfred Derby Day, featuring the 244th running of the world’s greatest Flat race and one of the marquee days in our sport.
We would like to extend our thanks to Betfred for their sponsorship over the two days of the Derby Festival, headlined by the Betfred Derby this afternoon. We also thank Aston Martin, the Japan Racing Association (JRA) and the Rio Ferdinand Foundation for their support across this afternoon’s card.
The Betfred Derby is the jewel in the crown of Flat racing, and the unique undulations of the Downs remain the supreme challenge for three-year-old thoroughbreds.
With an illustrious roll of honour, including 2001 winner Galileo, who went on to sire a further five winners of the race from 2008 to 2019, the list of winners, both equine and human, is second to none.
No Derby Day would be complete without a tribute to all-time winning most jockey Lester Piggott who won the race nine times throughout his career, having lined up at the start no less than 36 times.
Following his passing in 2022, we are delighted to have permanently renamed a race in his honour, which will be run at 3.55pm. Before racing we would love you to join us to remember one of the greatest jockeys of the modern era with a minute’s applause at 12.20pm.
This will be preceded by a wreath in the colours of Nijinsky being laid at Lester’s statue on the Queen Elizabeth II Stand lawn, by Frankie Dettori ahead of what will be his final ride in The Derby.
We must take this opportunity to join racing fans and participants around the world in thanking Frankie for all that he has done for our sport. We know that this racecourse and this day holds a special place in his heart, and he will always have a unique place in Epsom’s long and storied history. Finally, you may well have read in the build-up to this year’s event about plans for potential disruption. We have as stringent and detailed a security operation as there has ever been in the 243 years of The Derby, but should disruption occur I would ask you to listen and look out for updates via screens around the course and please be patient as security and police teams deal with any incidents.
As we embark on this day, on behalf of the Epsom Downs Committee I would like to extend our gratitude to all who have made it possible I wish all the runners and their connections the very best of luck and hope you have a memorable Derby Day.

After a huge improvement to finish third in the Gordon Richards Stakes at Newmarket, Highland Avenue is of obvious interest but the form of Charlie Appleby’s runners puts a spanner in the works. KOLSAI looks a much more reliable option after two second efforts this season, and only finished half a length behind Canberra Legend in the Feilden Stakes at Newmarket The highly experienced Escobar rounds off the shortlist
With the fourth Classic on the horizon, the Aidan O’Brien-trained Auguste Rodin heads the betting since bombing out in the 2000 Guineas. Military Order bids for his fourth success in a row since landing the Derby Trial at Lingfield, while The Dante winner The Foxes must also enter calculations. However, the vote goes to the third-placed PASSENGER who was very unlucky not to win at York, not getting a clear passage, and can give Sir Michael Stoute back-to-back success in the race.
Turned over Inspiral when landing the Falmouth Stakes, PROSPEROUS VOYAGE should take all the beating in this six-runner affair. The mare Roman Mist scored at Listed level on heavy ground at Goodwood and the booking of Oisin Murphy catches the eye, while Sir Michael Stoute and Ryan Moore team up with Potapova who was highly disappointing in the same race when sent off favourite. She should bounce back.
A competitive handicap where it might be worth taking a chance on the Andrew Baldingtrained ESTATE. Subsequently raised 5lb for his recent Salisbury victory, he can go in again off bottom weight. Jm Jungle remains of interest after his half a length second last time out and is feared most, with Can To Can, Grace Angel and Zuffolo all winning on their previous start and can’t be overlooked either.
Possibly the hardest race to analyse today, course and distance winners Recon Mission, Mokaatil and Lihou can make their voices heard again in a tricky field. Live In The Moment was only denied by a short head last time out and is feared most but the vote goes to CLARENDON HOUSE from the Robert Cowell stable.Well supported and losing a shoe in a decent handicap atYork, he can make amends here. AlligatorAlley could also be worth noting in the fiirt time visor and rounds out the shortlist.
Lucky to gain success last time out, the John Gosden-trained Maasai Mara will do well to follow up on his Ascot success and stablemate Torito looks the better option. Sir Michael Stoute often loves getting his horses a fair opening mark and FOX JOURNEY and makes plenty of appeal again, going up 9lb for his decisive win at Newmarket. Promoter and Perfect Play could also feature in the finish.
Course and distance winner Scampi landed a valuable handicap at York last time out and remains of high interest going up 6lb, but the eye is drawn to the Ryan Moore on CAIUS CHORISTER. Narrowly denied from maintaining her unbeaten record at Epsom, she will appreciate the step back up in trip. Kempton winner Max Mayhem won on debut for his new yard and must be feared, along with Sea King in the first time cheekpieces.
Last year’s winner of the race MR WAYGU lines up again in a strong field of 14 and is taken to repeat history, continuing to slide down the handicap. Probe arrives in terrific form and could prove the biggest danger after winning two from his last three starts.Apollo One followed him home at Newmarket to finish third and now on level terms, the pair can finish a lot closer ManyA Star makes his belated debut and also adds his name to the shortlist in the finale.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

end of the season. The wreath-laying will be followed by a minute’s applause in the great jockey’s memory.
Additionally the £75,000 10-furlong handicap at 3.55pm has been permanently renamed the Lester Piggott Handicap Stakes. Betfred sponsors the contest this afternoon.
Frankie Dettori said: “It is an honour to be asked to lay a wreath at Lester’s statue on Derby Day. He was a hero of mine who then became a good friend and it’s impossible to measure the impact he had on me both as a person and a jockey throughout my life.
Frankie Dettori has said he is “honoured” to be asked to lay a wreath at the statue of his hero Lester Piggott today at 12.20pm.
Piggott, who died aged 86 on May 29th last year, rode in The Derby 36 times between 1951 and 1994, winning on a record nine occasions aboard Never Say Die (1954), Crepello (1957), St Paddy (1960), Sir Ivor (1968), Nijinsky (1970), Roberto (1972), Empery (1976), The Minstrel (1977) and Teenoso (1983). Nicknamed ‘The Long Fellow’, Piggott also partnered six Oaks winners and recorded an unmatched nine victories in the Coronation Cup at Epsom Downs.
In every year going forward, a floral wreath in the colours of Piggott’s 1970 Derby winner Nijinsky, the last horse to win the English Triple Crown, will be laid by a current member of the weighing room at the Lester Piggott statue on the Queen Elizabeth II Stand lawn.
In 2023 this will be Frankie Dettori, who will be riding in the Betfred Derby for the final time aboard Arrest ahead of his retirement at the
“I’m sure it will be a poignant and emotional moment for many reasons and I’m grateful to Epsom Downs for inviting me to lead this year’s tributes to Lester on my last Derby Day as a jockey.”
Brian Finch, Chair of Epsom Downs Racecourse, added: “For so many of us, Lester Piggott is synonymous with The Derby and Epsom Downs like no other jockey before or since.
“Lester sadly passed away just six days before The Derby in 2022 and we ran The Derby in his memory.
“For such a distinguished figure in the long history of The Derby and with his unprecedented achievements unlikely to be matched, we felt it was important to establish a permanent annual commemoration and celebration of Lester’s life on Derby Day.
“I would like to thank Frankie Dettori for agreeing to lay the wreath in Lester’s memory this year ahead of his final ride in The Betfred Derby and I hope the Betfred Lester Piggott Handicap will provide an exciting finish of which Lester would have been proud.”
10 years ago – 2013 – Ruler of the World
Ruler of the World handed a fourth Derby to trainer Aidan O’Brien and a second to jockey Ryan Moore. This was a second Derby winner for his sire Galileo, and a fifth for a horse owned by a Coolmore syndicate. Runner-up Libertarian, from Elaine Burke’s Yorkshire stables, achieved the best finishing position ever for a female trainer.
20 years ago – 2003 –
Kris Kin was the first supplementary entry to win the Betfred Derby. The Sir Michael Stoute-trained colt had initially been entered in the Classic as a yearling, but was scratched at the start of his three-year-old campaign. Connections paid £90,000 to add the horse to the line-up at the five-day stage, after he won the Dee Stakes at Chester.
years ago
Michael Kinane rode the first of his three Derby winners on Commander in Chief. The colt was the third of four Derby winners for trainer Sir Henry Cecil, and the second of three for owner Khalid Abdullah.
years
In 1983, Teenoso became Lester Piggott’s ninth and final Derby winner.
Heavy rain fell throughout the day, which resulted in the going turning soft. The winning time of the horse was 2:49:07, the slowest time of the 20th Century.
50 years ago – 1973
Breeder, owner, and trainer Arthur Budgett gained the second of his two Derby triumphs with Morston in 1973. His previous success had come in 1969, with Blakeney, Morston’s half-brother.
years
Papyrus gave Steve Donoghue a unique jockeys’ hat-trick in the Derby, after Humorist (1921) and Captain Cuttle (1922). Later in the year, the colt became the first Derby winner to race in the USA, where he was well beaten in a match with Zev in New York.

Although HIGHLAND AVENUE hasn't scored since April 2021, he made a creditable return to action when finishing in third behind stablemate Adayar in the Gordon Richards Stakes at Newmarket last month. He lost second towards the finish on that occasion and can benefit from dropping back in trip. He holds a speculative entry for the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown in July and must be of significant interest, but the unexposed Kolsai boasts an appealing pedigree and is respected for powerful connections. Regal Reality finished one place behind the selection last time out and also warrants a market check.

Ryan MooreHighland Avenue heads the market here and seems to be a worthy favourite for the Godolphin team. Kolsai has bumped into a couple of very smart horses on his last two starts and is still unexposed. He is likely to fill the frame, but once again he is likely to find one too good.

The Derby has been run on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, and usually takes place on the first Saturday in June. It was permanently switched from Wednesday to Saturday in 1995.
T H E BE TF RE D DE RB YA HI ST OR Y
In 1776, ‘Gentleman’ Johnny Burgoyne, a soldier, playwright and politician who married into the Derby family and had passed on the lease of his Surrey mansion, the Oaks, to the 12th Earl of Derby, Edward Smith-Stanley, urged his friend to introduce a race for three-year-old fillies over a mile and a half to emulate old comrade in arms Anthony St Leger, founder of the St Leger at Doncaster.
Three years later, on May 14th 1779, the Downs above the spa town of Epsom hosted the initial Oaks and, appropriately, Lord Derby’s Bridget was victorious. At a celebratory party that evening, Burgoyne proposed, because the Oaks had been such a great success, a similar race should be founded for both colts and fillies.
Sir Charles Bunbury, a distinguished figure in the world of horseracing, was behind the concept of racing over a mile or a mile and a half. Legend has it that Bunbury and Derby discussed the possibility and all that was left to do was name the race. Apparently, it was the toss of a coin in the latter’s favour that secured the race title, which started a worldwide franchise and lives on as strongly as ever.
On May 4th 1780, the inaugural Derby Stakes was run for £1,065 15s. Despite losing the flip of the coin, Bunbury gained some compensation when Diomed carried his pink and white silks to success over a mile. The distance was changed to the present mile and a half in 1784.
Lord Derby had to wait until 1787 before he saw his colours triumph in the Classic, when the previously unraced Sir Peter Teazle scored under Sam Arnull. Sir Peter Teazle was retired to stud in October 1789 and developed into a great sire.
By the middle of the 19th Century, The Derby had established itself as the most important race of the year in Britain with many thousands flocking to Epsom Downs where there was also a huge fair.
The Classic used to be run on the first Wednesday in June, but since 1995 has taken place on the first Saturday of that month. The British Parliament did not sit on Derby Day for many years, such was the prestige of the premier Classic.
Copies of the race were spawned around the world and there are well over 400 different Derbys, some very illustrious like the Kentucky Derby and others less so.
After the American Civil War, the Kentucky thoroughbred industry experienced hard times and Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark represented a group interested in reviving racing in the US state. He travelled to England and France in 1872 to study European horseracing. While in England, Colonel Clark saw the famous Derby at Epsom Downs and, when he returned to Louisville, he made plans to create a race like the one he had witnessed. The first Kentucky Derby was run at Churchill Downs in 1875. The fact that the Kentucky Derby takes place on dirt rather than turf and over a mile and a quarter rather than a mile and a half does not diminish the sense of flattery towards Epsom Downs. The name Derby was used in America and many other countries to denote the best race for three-year-olds.
Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey has been the stage for the premier British Classic, except during both World Wars (1915-1918, 1940-1945) when the course was used to house prisoners of war. A substitute race, the New Derby, was staged at Newmarket instead.
The Betfred Derby, a supreme challenge for three year olds over the unique undulating Epsom Downs track, remains the most prestigious Flat race in the world. It is staged for the 244th time in 2023 and sponsored for the first time by Betfred. Its prize fund stands at £1,561,950.
The Derby boasts an illustrious roll of honour, which includes Bay Middleton, Ormonde, Isinglass, Hyperion and Bahram, while the last 60 years alone have seen such luminaries prevail as Sea-Bird, Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Shergar, Nashwan, Generous, Lammtarra, Galileo, High Chaparral, New Approach, Sea The Stars and Golden Horn.
Such names contribute to The Derby’s rich history, partly through their outstanding performances over Epsom Downs but also, for some, through their legacy as leading stallions. Galileo, European champion sire in 2008 thanks largely to his Derby winner New Approach and Coronation Cup victor Soldier Of Fortune and again from 2010 to 2020 inclusive, demonstrated his prowess over the course in 2001. Galileo has since sired a record five winners of The Betfred Derby, most recently Serpentine in 2020.
The Betfred Derby, Betfred Oaks and DahlBury Coronation Cup are all part of the QIPCO British Champions Series.

The Derby Trial Stakes
Leopardstown
Sunday 7th May
The Derby Trial Stakes at Leopardstown has previoulsy had some smart winners, with Globe-trotting Stone Age landing the honours last year, and Sprewell could prove another to follow. Since landing a useful conditions race at Naas on return, he certainly put himself into the reckoning as a Derby contender with a decisive victory, handling the step up in grade and trip. He fashionably had the well-fancied Up And Under (2nd) and Proud And Regal (3rd) beat on the day but there is a question marks whether the faster ground will suit
The Boodles Chester Vase Stakes
Chester
Wednesday 10th May
John and Thady Gosden saddle just one in this year’s Derby, with Frankie Dettori bidding for his third success in this prestigious race A head second to Dubai Mile in the Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud on his final start as a juvenile, the strong travelling Arrest made the belated comeback of dreams, after the Classic Trial meeting was abandoned at Sandown, to land the Boodles Chester Vase Stakes over one mile and four furlongs. He had the soft conditions to suit and easily dispatched his rivals by six and a half lengths putting him firmly in the running for the Derby. However, he is another that might want a bit of cut in the ground.
Saturday 13th May
A brother to the 2021 winner Adayar, Charlie Appleby could have another gem on his hands here with the all blue Military Order. Turned over at a short-price on debut, the Frankel colt quickly made amends at Newmarket, stepping up an extra furlong to a mile. Always in complete control at Newbury, over further again, he confirmed his class when comfortably winning the Fitzdares Lingfield Derby Trial Stakes. He showed a good winning attitude to assert from another classy colt in the home straight and although the Appleby yard are yet to hit top form, he remains a strong fancy
The Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Stakes York
Thursday 18th May
The most experienced runner in the race, but still unexposed over today's trip, The Foxes makes appeal for the Andrew Balding team. Just like his sire Churchill, he began his career over six furlongs and has slowlyworked his way up in distance. A winner of a seven furlongs Goodwood maiden, he took a huge step forward to land the Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes, having today's rival Dubai Mile half a length behind. It was the victory in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Stakes that caught the eye of many, however. Although a messy race, he had both White Birch and Passenger behind and the sky is the limit for what he can achieve. He is a half brother to a one mile six winner, so stamina should prove no issue.

Frankie Dettori seeks to add a third Derby success to his ever-expanding CV on this farewell season and Arrest, a facile winner of the Chester Vase, would appeal as a live candidate. Aidan O'Brien has had a stranglehold on this contest in the last few years, winning three of the previous six renewals. He saddles three, of which high-class juvenile Auguste Rodin looks to be his most likely chance, providing he can bounce back from a below-par run in the 2000 Guineas. A chance, however, is taken on DUBAI MILE. Pedigree would suggest he's not a guaranteed stayer, but he plugged on for a creditable fifth, having looked outpaced in the 2000 Guineas. He saw off Arrest in the Criterium de Saint Cloud over 1m2f last year, so it is quite possible this test will bring out the best in him. Military Order and Passenger, an unlucky third to The Foxes in the Dante, complete the shortlist.
Betfred is kindly awarding £1,000 to the racing groom responsible for the best turned out horse in this race, as well as a trophy to the winning owner, trainer, jockey, groom and breeder

An intriguing renewal of the Derby, with Auguste Rodin still heading the market despite a poor showing in the Guineas. All the vibes around him are positive, but he is likely to be well found in the market because of the trainer/jockey combination. The Foxes was very brave in winning the Dante and is likely to go off a double figure price, and could well overpay in the pool. Arrest was very impressive on soft ground at Chester, but he should handle quicker ground and is the second selection for the Swinger

Archie Watson and Oisin Murphy teamed up to win this contest two years ago and they can do so again with ROMAN MIST, who was a determined winner in Listed company at Goodwood last month. The five-year-old is taken to overturn form with Potapova (second), whom she was narrowly behind in this contest last year, while Prosperous Voyage is the highest rated in the field and sets the standard on form. Astral Beau rarely runs a bad race and is another to consider.

Astral Beau ran a good race in defeat at the Guineas meeting last time out and should give another good account of herself here. Her form ties in closely with Prosperous Voyage, which makes it the perfect opportunity to back the pair in a Quinella. Potapova is hit and miss, and although talented, cannot be relied upon.
BET TYPE: Quinella SELECTIONS: Astral Beau, Prosperous Voyage
The photo-finish camera decided the Derby result for the first time in 1949 when Nimbus landed the spoils by a head from French raider Amour Drake.
The first Derby in 1780 was run on May 4th – the Classic’s earliest staging during a year - while the 1917renewal was the latest in the calendar on July 31st.

“It’s not just my dream – it is the dream of every jockey on the planet. Everybody wants to win The Derby because it is simply the best race in the world.”
Frankie Dettori announced at the end of last year that 2023 would be his last season in the saddle, bringing to a close a remarkable career which has spanned almost 40 years.
To celebrate his time in the saddle, Epsom Downs and The Jockey Club commissioned a leading street art specialist, MurWalls, to create a giant mural on the side of the Duchess Stand at the Surrey track. Depicting him in the colours of his 2015 Derby winner Golden Horn, the artwork stretches across the side of the stand, measuring 52ft by 23ft.
Unveiled at the Spring Meeting in April, Dettori admitted he was “gobsmacked” by the piece, as he looks forward to his last ride in the Betfred Derby. Asked what it would mean to win the race in his final year, he said: “It would be amazing. I’m trying to enjoy every moment of my last year, that’s why I gave myself a year, more or less, to enjoy it.
“I have mixed feelings. It’s the end of an era, and it’s nice to be recognised with something as big as this. Epsom is a special place for me. I’ve had some great memories, lots of nice winners – two Derby wins, five Coronation Cups, six Oaks. It’s been a good stomping ground for me.”
In addition to the titles, prestige, and prize money, the 2023 classic winning owners will also receive a photography commission of their winning horse from renowned portrait photographer Tom Shaw. Shaw, who has photographed some of the world’s biggest sports stars, photographs horses in the style of legendary equine artist George Stubbs. The idea was born during a late summer drive in the Cotswolds where the evening sun gently raked across the idyllic countryside, mirroring the backdrops that Stubbs often used in his paintings.

A traditionally competitive handicap in which plenty have chances. Jm Jungle can usually be trusted to give a good account of himself, but he has only won one race. This makes him a perfect selection for the Swinger, and a chance is taken on Grace Angel to fill the frame as well. She should go close under Jason Watson.
BET TYPE: Swinger

Silky Wilkie is highly respected, given he wasn't beaten far in the Group 3 Palace House Stakes at Newmarket last month, but he would need to set a modern day weight-carrying record to emerge on top on theses terms. Therefore, it might pay to side with VINTAGE CLARETS, who is versatile regarding ground preference and looks the type to rise to the demands of this unique test. Clarendon House also has to be considered granted his scope for improvement, while Zarzyni and last runner-up Mountain Peak also have plenty to offer.
WIN: VINTAGE CLARETS
EACH-WAY: Silky Wilkie

A wide-open contest in which preference is for PERFECT PLAY. A comfortable winner over an extended 1m 2f at Chester last week, he looks capable of defying a 5lb rise and a step up in class may not be enough to stop him mounting another bold bid. Fox Journey seems an obvious threat, given he scored with something in hand at Newmarket most recently, and the son of Roaring Lion must enter calculations off 9lb higher. Course scorer Kadovar is another to consider stepping back up in distance.
WIN: PERFECT PLAY

CAIUS CHORISTER wasn't too far away from maintaining her unbeaten Epsom record over 1m 2f at the April meeting and the step back up in trip promises to yield further improvement. The booking of Ryan Moore catches the eye and she is preferred to York scorer Scampi and Sea King, who ran well for second at Kempton on his return. Sheer Rocks is open to further improvement after his Ascot success, while the same can be said of Kempton scorer Max Mayhem.

LONGEST TRAVELLER: VENTUROUS trained by D & N Barron, Thirsk, 245 miles.
Probe arrives in fine form after scoring in a big-field handicap at Newmarket's Guineas meeting but he does have to cope with a 7lb hike in the ratings, and a chance is taken on VENTUROUS. David and Nicola Barron's veteran was a good second at Ayr and a repeat of that effort off the same mark could see him go close. Haymaker won well at Windsor and should be seriously considered, along with last year's victor Mr Wagyu.
