SUMMER EVENING RACING
THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU
Welcome to Epsom Downs Racecourse
We are delighted to welcome you to Epsom Downs Racecourse for the opening day of the Betfred Derby Festival, featuring two Group One races in the Betfred Oaks and the Holland Cooper Coronation Cup.
Whether you are here to witness world-class thoroughbreds, showcase your finest attire, or simply enjoy the carnival atmosphere, we have a spectacular day lined up for you. From the picturesque parade ring to the unique and historic track, every moment promises to be unforgettable as part of Racing’s Greatest Carnival.
We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our partners, Betfred, for increasing their support this year across the festival. It is instrumental in making this prestigious event possible, and we are immensely grateful for their commitment to the sport of horseracing.
We would also like to thank new partners Holland Cooper for their support of the Group One Coronation Cup, as well as the European Breeders Fund, TrustATrader, Aston Martin and Molson Coors for their support across today’s card
The Betfred Oaks is the third Classic of the turf season in Britain and is run over a mile and a half for three-year-old fillies Older than the Derby by a year, its roll of honour boasts some of the greatest names ever to grace the turf. This year promises to be a world-class race and we wish all involved the best of luck.
We are also delighted to see Treasure declared for the race, running in the famous royal silks of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen. Their Majesties were announced earlier this month as joint Patrons of The Jockey Club, succeeding The late Queen Elizabeth II, who won the Oaks twice as an owner and was an annual visitor to Epsom Downs on Derby Day.
Today will also see the Holland Cooper Coronation Cup take place, one of the best middle-distance Flat races in the world. This year, a perpetual trophy from the 1902 running of the race will be presented to the winning owner. Made prior to the Coronation of King Edward VII when it was re-named, we are delighted to be able to honour the heritage of this historic race in this way.
Off the track you will notice several changes across the festival site. We have launched a new enclosure this year, named after Cedric who won the Derby exactly 200 years ago, and are delighted to partner with Nyetimber to deliver this new space. In the Grandstand Enclosure we have launched a new food concept, London’s food festival, to bring new innovative tastes and smells to our customers. The after-party also has a new home this year, with JLS’s Marvin Humes keeping the party going on the Rekorderlig bar after racing has concluded.
Tom Sammes General Manager, Epsom Downs Racecourse
Brian Finch Chair, Epsom Downs Racecourse
This world-class event would not happen without the hard work and dedication of the Epsom Downs and The Jockey Club team, who have worked tirelessly to deliver a fantastic Ladies Day for everyone attending today. We all wish the runners and connections the very best of luck across the card, and hope that everyone has an excellent day at the Betfred Derby Festival. THANK YOU TO

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example,
Previous Performances
/ = denotes new season
- = denotes new year
Bold type indicates AWT Form
Jockey’s Name.
If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight
would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
Frankie DettoriTODAY’S TOP TIPS
RACE ONE
A fascinating renewal of the Woodcote Stakes kicks off the Betfred Derby Festival, with ten hopefuls going to post. You could make a case for most of the field but TEEJ A looks to be the most solid option for Karl Burke and Nick Bradley Racing. At Chester, she looked as though there’d been a marked improvement from her debut run at Nottingham when she finished second. She made light work of the field at Chester and could take some stopping today.
RACE TWO
George Boughey won this race two years ago with Totally Charming and once again his runner KOY KOY appeals as the likeliest winner. Partnered by William Buick, the five-yearold ran an eye catching race at Newmarket when beaten by just 2 1/2 lengths in sixth. He remains on a very dangerous mark of 95 and now steps up a furlong and a half to a more favourable distance. In this company, it’s hard to see him out of the placings.
RACE THREE
A small but talented field of five go to post for the first Group One of the two-day Festival. EMILY UPJOHN returns to try and defend her crown in what could turn into quite a tactical affair. She has an excellent record at the track, with a win and a second place effort and following her pipe opener at Meydan, she should be primed for this. Her excellent turn of foot makes her the most appealing and she rates as the most likely winner
RACE FOUR
Inwhat looks averycompetitive handicap,it couldwell payto sidewith a horsewith a little more class than their rivals. KILLYBEGS WARRIOR could well bring that element of class needed to win a race of this nature and despite being near top weight, he is no stranger to running well in races like this. Rated 104, he’s just 1lb higher than when third in a similar handicap atYork at the end of last season. At a big price, he may well return some each-way value.
RACE SIX
RACE FIVE
The feature race of the day looks an absolute cracker but it’s very difficult to look beyond the favourite YLANG YLANG for Aidan O’Brien. Ballydoyle have a fantastic record in the race and their supposed first string looks to have all the credentials for a big run. She was a staying on fifth in the QIPCO 1000 Guineas and shaped as though this step up in trip will bring about the needed improvement to take a race of this nature.
ZOUM ZOUM shoulders a 3lb penalty for his Listed success as a juvenile but could have too much for his rivals here after a good second on seasonal debut. He shaped as though he is better than this level and could well improve past these in time. Evade and Native American look as though they will pose the biggest danger, while Pandora’s Gift could also claim a place.
RACE SEVEN
Ladies Day concludes with a wide-open seven furlong handicap where all look to have some sort of a chance. SPANISH STAR has finished fourth on both starts this campaign but looks set to land a race of this nature soon. Tom Marquand takes over from David Probert and from a mark of 89 he looks a likely type to do well. Mission To Moon looks to be the biggest danger for Oisin Murphy and Roger Varian.

BETFRED OAKS ANNIVERSARIES IN 2024
10 YEARS AGO – Hamdan Al Maktoum’s homebred Taghrooda is successful, handing 2009 Derby hero Sea The Stars his first Classic victory as a sire. It is also a first Classic winner for her jockey Paul Hanagan.
20 YEARS AGO – The famous colours of Lord Derby are carried to a memorable success by Ouija Board. The daughter of Cape Cross went on to win an amazing seven Group One races during her career and at stud went on to produce the 2014 Derby hero Australia.
30 YEARS AGO – A first UK Classic success for owner Godolphin and jockey Frankie Dettori as Balanchine triumphs.
40 YEARS AGO – It is a sixth and final Oaks victory for jockey Lester Piggott as Circus Plume is successful.
50 YEARS AGO – Polygamy provides Pat Eddery with the first of what would prove to be 14 Classic successes as she justifies 3-1 favouritism.
60 YEARS AGO – Greville Starkey partners Homeward Bound to victory. The runner-up Windmill Girl would go on to produce two Derby winners at stud – Blakeney (1969) and Morston (1973).
70 YEARS AGO – The 1-2-3 are all trained in France, with Sun Cap leading the way home.
80 YEARS AGO – The fifth of six Oaks to be run at Newmarket during World War II goes to Hycilla. She is ridden by Georges Bridgland, a French jockey of English ancestry who was then serving in the Royal Air Force.
90 YEARS AGO – Light Brocade is the winner. Beaten on her only subsequent start, her descendants at stud went on to prove influential in the development of racing in Japan.
100 YEARS AGO – After torrential rain on Derby Day, conditions improve significantly for the Oaks as Straitlace is successful.
200 YEARS AGO – Cobweb, owned and bred by the 5th Earl of Jersey, triumphs. Unbeaten in her three starts, which also included the 1000 Guineas, she went on to prove herself one of the most influential broodmares in history with countless champions among her descendants.

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
The Richard Hannon yard has won this twice in the last decade and New Charter seems likely to prove popular after her highly promising debut second at Newmarket, where she pulled too hard to give her best. If she settles now, she can get involved but preference is for MEGALITHIC. Left with plenty to do at Salisbury before running on well into third behind a previous winner, he can only improve for the experience. Recent winners End Of Story and Teej A are others to consider in a fascinating contest.

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
A small but select field for this top-class race, won by EMILY UPJOHN last season. The Gosdens' mare was last seen finishing fifth to Rebel's Romance in the Dubai Sheema Classic and with that form boosted by the winner scoring in Hong Kong last weekend, she can retain her crown, despite the softer surface. Hamish looks overpriced on his favoured ground but is yet to win at this level and has to find a bit more, so three-time Group 1 winner Luxembourg appears the main danger.
WIN: EMILY UPJOHN
EACH-WAY: Luxembourg
PRESENTATION
Holland Cooper is kindly awarding £200 to the racing groom responsible for the best turned out horse in this race, as well as a trophy to the winning owner, trainer and jockey. A £500 Holland Cooper voucher will also be presented to the winning groom.

THE BETFRED OAKS
Older than The Derby by a year, The Oaks was the brainchild of Johnny Burgoyne, a soldier, playwright and politician who married into Lord Derby’s family.
Burgoyne had passed on the lease for his Surrey mansion, the Oaks, to his nephew, the 12th Earl of Derby, and persuaded the nobleman to create a race over a mile and a half for three-year-old fillies in response to the St Leger, which had been founded at Doncaster as a two-mile contest for colts of the same age in 1776.
The first Oaks, named after the nearby house, took place in 1779. The winner was Lord Derby’s Bridget, whose sire Herod was also responsible for Faith, successful in the fillies’ Classic two years later, and the 1783 victor Maid Of The Oaks.
In 1801, Eleanor was the first horse to win the Derby and triumph in the Oaks the very next day. The filly’s trainer, Mr Cox, died shortly before both Classics and his last words were recorded as: “Depend on it, that Eleanor is a hell of a mare.”
Fully 56 years after Eleanor, Blink Bonny became the second filly to complete the Derby-Oaks double when she prevailed in 1857.
In 1902, Sceptre captured both the 1000 and 2000 Guineas at Newmarket before finishing fourth in the Derby following an interrupted preparation. Trained by owner, journalist and adventurer Robert Sievier, the very talented filly returned to form with a resounding victory in the Oaks two days later. She went on to capture the St Leger, becoming the only horse to win four British Classics.
Pretty Polly triumphed on all nine of her starts as a two-year-old and started the 1904 campaign with victory in the 1000 Guineas before going on to succeed in both the Oaks - when the shortest-priced winner ever at 8/100 - and the St Leger for the fillies’ Triple Crown. One of the greatest-ever fillies, Pretty Polly was victorious 22 times from 24 races and had a huge impact on the thoroughbred in career as a broodmare. Signorinetta became the third filly to complete the Derby-Oaks double in 1908, belying a starting price of 100/1 against the colts, while Fifinella was the last filly to manage the Classic double in 1916, when both races were held at Newmarket due to the First World War.
Sun Chariot triumphed in the 1942 Oaks, run at Newmarket during World War II, despite giving the rest of the field a furlong start when slowly away.
The filly, leased to the monarch King George VI for her racing career by the Irish National Stud, won both the 1000 Guineas and the St Leger in impressive fashion to claim the fillies’ Triple Crown. This feat was emulated by Meld in 1955 and Oh So Sharp in 1985.
The 100/8 chance Carrozza, trained by Sir Noel Murless and partnered by Lester Piggott who had combined to win the Derby with Crepello two days beforehand, became the initial Classic winner for Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II when successful in the 1957 renewal of the Oaks. The Queen enjoyed a tremendous second Oaks success in her Silver Jubilee year of 1977, when Dunfermline triumphed before going on to win the final Classic, the St Leger.
There were emotional scenes in the winner’s enclosure in 2007 when the Ted Durcan-ridden Light Shift provided the late Sir Henry Cecil an eighth victory in the Oaks. The 2014 Oaks was run in memory of Sir Henry, one of British racing’s most influential and successful trainers of all time, who died on June 11, 2013 after a long battle with cancer.
In recent years, Enable was a brilliant winner in 2017 for John Gosden, Frankie Dettori and the late Prince Khalid Abdullah. Her Epsom Downs success was the beginning of a five-race winning streak at G1 level in 2017 that included impressive victories in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp, making her the first Oaks winner to land Europe’s premier all-aged race.
In 2018, Enable went on to win a second Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe while she also became the first Oaks heroine to win the Breeders’ Cup Turf when successful at Churchill Downs in November. She also won Ascot’s King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes a record three times – 2017, 2019 and 2020.
Along with the Betfred Derby and Holland Cooper Coronation Cup at The Betfred Derby Festival, the Betfred Oaks forms part of the QIPCO British Champions Series.

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
Liberty Lane has to be respected following his victory over 1m1f at Newmarket earlier in the month, but marginal preference is for CITY STREAK. Andrew Balding's progressive gelding returned to winning ways over an extended 1m2f at Chester recently and a 3lb rise for that success may still underestimate him. Bolster remains unexposed and should not be discounted, while I Still Have Faith and Paradias have each-way claims.

THE ROAD TO THE BETFRED OAKS
YLANG YLANG
The QIPCO 1000 Guineas Newmarket - Sunday 5th May
As a two-year-old the talented Ylang Ylang won three of her five starts, including the Group 1 bet365 Fillies Mile at Newmarket in October. So all eyes were on Aidan O’Brien’s star for her seasonal debut in the QIPCO 1000 Guineas back on the Rowley Mile earlier this month. Things didn’t quite go to plan in the first fillies’ Classic of the campaign, although once switched to the outside by jockey Ryan Moore she did show some determination to stay on inside the final furlong to cross the line in fifth. Dance Sequence was the only other contender in today’s Betfred Oaks to run in the Guineas, finishing ninth.
YOU GOT TO ME
The William Hill Oaks Trial Fillies’ Stakes
Lingfield Park - Saturday 11th May
You Got To Me wasn’t able to build on a promising debut effort in a strong looking Listed stakes at Newmarket as a two-year-old but didn’t lose much in defeat in fifth. In the parade ring beforehand she looked as though she’d taken a definite step forward and perhaps knew her job a little better than some of her rivals. Hector Crouch chose to try and win the race from the front, with his rivals keeping close tabs throughout the contest. She stuck to her task extremely gamely when pressed up the straight and credit must be given to Crouch for delivering a cracking front running ride. The pair held off the challenge of Rubies Are Red and should have a say here.
FOREST FAIRY
The Weatherbys E-Passport Cheshire Oaks Chester - Wednesday 8th May
A hot looking renewal of the Weatherbys E-Passport Cheshire Oaks went the way of Ralph Beckett and jockey Rossa Ryan, as Forest Fairy just pipped Port Fairy to the post by a head. Forest Fairy had been slow leaving the stalls but was quickly pushed to grab the rail by Rossa Ryan, sitting in third for much of the contest. Seaward set steady fractions for much of the contest and despite having things her own way in front, was picked off by the Ballydoyle runner and Forest Fairy. The former looked to have stolen a march on her rivals but the daughter of Waldgeist would not be denied once she got the hang of things in the straight. A late thrust saw her win by a head to claim the prize.
SECRET SATIRE
The Tattersalls Musidora Stakes
York - Wednesday 15th May
Secret Satire was weak in the market before the off but won in the fashion of a short priced favourite to take The Tattersalls Musidora Stakes. On her three-year-old debut she attempted to make all at Sandown Park and ran well for a long way before being picked off by two rivals when trying to give 6lb away to the field. On this occasion, Oisin Murphy sat her just in behind the leaders and despite pulling hard in the early stages, she managed to keep enough in the tank to strike from a good position. She clearly has her share of ability and there is no reason why she can’t take another step forward to go very close here.

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
Ylang Ylang sets the standard based on her victory in the Fillies' Mile last year and an encouraging fifth in the 1000 Guineas. The daughter of Frankel looks set to relish this step up in trip but preference is for EZELIYA, who accounted for a subsequent Group 3 winner when scoring on her second start as a juvenile. She took a big step forward when winning the Salsabil over 1m2f at Navan, and her dam was a high-class middle-distance performer for these connections. Further improvement can be expected over this trip and it would be no surprise to see her play a leading role. Rubies Are Red remains a maiden but cannot be discounted, while Forest Fairy and Treasure are likely to stay well and could also be in the mix.
WIN: EZELIYA
EACH-WAY: Ylang Ylang

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
Zoum Zoum lost his unbeaten record when dead-heating for second in the Greenham at Newbury and this appears to be the ideal spot to come ahead of the Jersey at Royal Ascot. That said, BALMACARA, who finished third to the former on his racecourse debut at Newmarket, has impressed on both starts this season at Doncaster and it seems notable that connections opt to run here as opposed to taking advantage of a tempting handicap mark. Evade and Native American appeal most of the remainder.

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
SPANISH STAR won this contest 12 months ago off a 1lb higher mark and has warmed up for a return with solid displays at Newbury and Goodwood. The booking of Tom Marquand is another positive and the nine-year-old has plenty in his favour for a repeat bid. Dark Thirty returned with success at Newmarket in April before finishing third at the same venue on Guineas weekend and is expected to be in the mix once again. Mission To Moon and Earls complete the shortlist.
