SUMMER EVENING RACING
THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU
Welcome to Epsom Downs Racecourse
Welcome to Epsom Downs Racecourse for the second day of the Betfred Derby Festival, featuring the 245th running of The Derby, the world’s greatest Flat race.
We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our partners, Betfred, for increasing their support this year across the festival, and elevating The Betfred Derby. They are instrumental in making this prestigious event possible, and we are immensely grateful for their commitment to the sport of horseracing.
We would also like to thank the Hong Kong Jockey Club, My Pension Expert, Aston Martin, Long Shot and the Japanese Racing Authority for their support across today’s card.
The Betfred Derby is the jewel in the crown of Flat racing and the most valuable horse race staged in the UK. The unique undulations of the Downs remain the supreme challenge for three-year-old colts and many of the winners of this iconic British sporting event have gone on to have long and successful careers at stud as a result
This year’s race has shaped up to be highly competitive and, while Aidan O’Brien is striving for an unprecedented 10th Derby victory, today’s renewal is as wide open as any in recent times. The draw was held on Thursday in Epsom town centre and for those who pay attention to trends, it is notable that God’s Window will run from stall 10, the most successful in the race’s history with 11 victories to date, including Auguste Rodin last year
No Derby Day would be complete without a tribute to legendary jockey Lester Piggott, who with nine wins to his name from an incredible 36 rides in the race, won it more times than any other. Before racing we would encourage everyone to join us in remembering one of the greatest sportsmen or women of the modern era as a wreath is laid at his statue by his daughter Maureen Haggas at 12.45pm.
We are also delighted to be joined by Laine Theatre School today, who will perform the National Anthem ahead of The Betfred Derby. Laine is a world-class performing arts college based in Epsom and two soloists will be joined by a 60-strong choir at the finishing line while the horses go to post.
Off the track you will notice several changes across the festival site. We have launched a new enclosure this year, named after Cedric who won the Derby exactly 200 years ago, and are delighted to partner with Nyetimber to deliver this new space. In the Grandstand Enclosure a new food festival concept is bringing innovative tastes and smells to our customers. The after-party also has a new home this year, with Vernon Kay keeping the party going on the Rekorderlig bar after racing has concluded.
This iconic event would not happen without the hard work and dedication of the Epsom Downs and The Jockey Club team, who have worked tirelessly to deliver a fantastic day for everyone attending. We all wish the runners and connections the very best of luck across the card today, and hope that everyone has an excellent day at the Betfred Derby Festival.

Jockey’s Name. If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example,
would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
Ryan MooreTODAY’S TOP TIPS
RACE ONE
BLAKE is fancied to make a winning start on Betfred Derby day. His last effort saw him break his maiden tag at Sandown Park by a head but he shaped as though there is more improvement to come. The step up in trip is a positive and he looks set to run another big race in the opener.
RACE TWO
Despite only having one win to her name to date, BREEGE is rarely out of the money and looks set to run well once more. She finished just a head behind Royal Dress at Goodwood on her seasonal debut and is sure to come on for that effort. She is marginally preferred to the likes of Running Lion and Sparks Fly.
RACE THREE
ROYAL SCOTSMAN finds himself with an excellent opportunity to get back to winning ways after a disappointing effort in the Group One Lockinge at Newbury. That was a much tougher assignment than the one he faces today and providing he’s taken a step forward, he should have an excellent chance of out running his odds.
RACE FOUR
Since moving to Gemma Tutty, BLUE STORM has managed to register a win at Southwell and claim a place at Wolverhampton. On seasonal debut he ran with a lot of credit before tiring late on and is expected to have taken a step forward from that effort. He looks a likely each-way angle in a race that could well be dominated by Due For Luck and Grandlad.
RACE SIX
RACE FIVE
CLARENDON HOUSE has the tricky task of giving weight away to all his rivals however he’s verymuch a Group horse running in a handicap. He impressedwhen landing avaluable handicap atYork and despite carrying topweight, isverymuch fancied to do the same.Looking For Lynda and SilkyWilkie are likely to give him most to think about.
In an open looking renewal of the Betfred Derby, a chance can be taken on DANCING GEMINI for the Roger Teal yard. He may well have won the French 2000 Guineas had a late downpour not dampened his chances and was only narrowly touched off in second. The step up in trip is sure to suit and he looks a solid each-way selection.
RACE SEVEN
RELENTLESS VOYAGER has ran well in races much deeper than this and can easily build on a third placed effort behind Maxi King at Newmarket That came off the back of a lengthy break and if the ground continues to dry out, he ought to have a mighty chance of registering his second win.
RACE EIGHT
Course specialist MR WAGYU looks to be lurking on a dangerous mark after finishing second and sixth this season. This does look to be another extremely competitive race but it's hard to see him out of the places at a track he does so well at. Strong alternatives will likely be Aleezdancer and Apollo One.

LAINE THEATRE ARTS CHOIR
We are delighted to welcome Laine Theatre Arts Choir from Laine Theatre Arts School in Epsom to the Betfred Derby Festival today. The choir will perform the National Anthem at approximately 4:25PM ahead of The Betfred Derby and the performance will also feature soloists Helin Konyar and Edward Flynn Haddon.
About Laine Theatre Arts
Laine is a world-class performing arts college based just down the road from us in the heart of Epsom and was founded in 1962 by Miss Betty Laine OBE, who we are also delighted to be joined by today. The Choir at Laine Theatre Arts is one of the many projects that was started to celebrate 40 years since the college’s inception. The Choir has sung for a variety of engagements including charitable functions for Cancer Research UK, JDRF and Carols at Christmas for Epsom Hospital Radio. Most recently they were asked to perform at the prestigious Sir Peter Hall Director Award ceremony, presented by The Royal Theatrical Support Trust for Sir Ian McKellen, and in the presence of notable industry figures such as Dame Harriet Walter and Dame Penelope Wilton. Edward Flynn Haddon
Edward is from Colchester and in his first year at Laine Theatre Arts. As a versatile tenor his repertoire includes everything from Pop to
He has performed in west-end musicals since the age of eight and is excited for the opportunities that professional training at Laine will bring him.
Credits include: Ron (Bat Boy The MusicalLondon Palladium), Bruce (Matilda The Musical - Cambridge theatre) Evan (Thirteen The Musical - Cadogan Hall) and George (Goodnight Mister Tom - Southwark playhouse). Edward is delighted to be performing at such a prestigious event.
Helin Konyar
Helin is a second-year student at Laine Theatre Arts. Born in Turkey and raised in Ukraine, she moved to the UK just two years ago. Helin’s passion for music and performance has been a significant part of her life since she was 11 years old. Whilst living in Ukraine, she participated in various musicals, showcasing her talent on stage. At 14, she was a semi-finalist on The Voice Kids. Now at Laine, Helin is an active member of the Laine Theatre Arts Choir and a recent highlight for her was singing at the Actors’ Church for a benefit concert to support LGBTQIA. Helin is thrilled to be performing at the world-famous Betfred Derby Festival.
Edward Flynn Haddon Helin KonyarTHE 1824 DERBY WINNER
Racegoers can this year enjoy the Betfred Derby Festival in a newly created space by the most famous winning post in horseracing.
Cedric’s could not be closer to the track at Epsom Downs, with seating, a range of food and drink options and covered areas to provide shade or shelter for all weathers. New for 2024, Cedric’s promises Ibiza-style vibes with world-class horseracing and an unrivalled atmosphere over the two days. This has already proved popular with racegoers in its first year and we are delighted to have Nyetimber supporting this area by providing a complimentary glass of their English Sparkling Wine on arrival.
“Cedric’s” gets it name from the racehorse Cedric – who won The Derby exactly 200 years ago in 1824.
A son of the 1811 Derby victor Phantom and a great-grandson of Sir Peter Teazle, Lord Derby’s 1787 Derby winner and champion stallion, Cedric was bred by his owner Sir John Shelley and trained at Palace House Stables (now the location of the National Horse Racing Museum) in Newmarket by James ‘Tiny’ Edwards.
The chestnut colt Cedric was unraced as a two-year-old but made a strong start to his Classic season by winning three of his first four races at Newmarket in the spring of 1824.
On the back of those efforts, Cedric started the 9-2 second favourite for The Derby and won easily from 16-1 chance Osmond. It was the second of what would prove to be six Derby victories for his rider James “Jem” Robinson. Robinson also won the 1824 Oaks on Cobweb and earlier in the same week had got married - reportedly winning a very large bet on the completion of the treble!
Following his Derby triumph, Cedric’s most significant race came the following year in 1825 when he defeated Bizarre, a dual winner of the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, in a match race at Newmarket. That victory meant that Cedric was regarded as the best horse in Britain and he was sold for £2,500 (equivalent to almost £200,000 in 2024) to John Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham.
Maureen Haggas will lay a wreath at the statue of her father, Lester Piggott, today at 12:45PM.
Piggott, who died aged 86 on May 29, 2022, rode in The Derby an unmatched 36 times between 1951 and 1994, winning on a record nine occasions aboard Never Say Die (1954), Crepello (1957), St Paddy (1960), Sir Ivor (1968), Nijinsky (1970), Roberto (1972), Empery (1976), The Minstrel (1977) and Teenoso (1983).
Nicknamed ‘The Long Fellow’, Lester also partnered six Oaks winners and recorded an unsurpassed nine victories in the Coronation Cup. Maureen herself has also enjoyed significant success at Epsom Downs in her capacity as assistant trainer to her husband William Haggas, who saddled Shaamit to victory in the 1996 Derby and Dancing Rain to success in the 2011 Oaks.
The wreath laying ceremony first took place in 2022 when Ryan Moore performed the honour, whilst Frankie Dettori did the same last year. In every year going forward, a floral wreath in the colours of Piggott’s 1970 Derby winner Nijinsky, the last horse to win the English Triple Crown (2000 Guineas, Derby and St Leger), will be laid at the Lester Piggott statue on the Queen Elizabeth II Stand lawn.
Additionally, today’s opening £75,000 10-furlong contest at 1.25pm is run as the Hong Kong Jockey Club Lester Piggott Handicap in memory of the great man.
BETFRED DERBY ANNIVERSARIES IN 2024
10 YEARS AGO – Australia gives trainer Aidan O’Brien an unprecedented third consecutive Derby success. Australia was sired by 2001 winner Galileo out of 2004 Oaks heroine Ouija Board, making him the first product of a Derby winner and an Oaks first-place finisher to win the premier Classic (the 1995 winner Lammtarra was out of Snow Bride, who was awarded the Oaks after the winner was disqualified).
20 YEARS AGO – North Light hands the combination of trainer Sir Michael Stoute and jockey Kieren Fallon a back-to-back Derby success following Kris Kin in 2003.
30 YEARS AGO – At the age of 58, Lester Piggott had his 36th and last Derby mount on fifth-placed 33-1 chance Khamaseen. Erhaab wins, handing trainer John Dunlop a second Derby success and jockey Willie Carson his fourth.
40 YEARS AGO – Ever Ready become the first ever commercial Derby sponsor. The first prize rises to £227,680 compared to £165,080 the previous year. The winner, Secreto, is trained by David O’Brien, who at 27 becomes the youngest known trainer to saddle a Derby victor.
50 YEARS AGO – At 50-1, Snow Knight lands The Derby and becomes the biggest outsider to triumph since Psdium at 66-1 in 1961.
60 YEARS AGO – Sandy Claus provides Australian jockey Scobie Breasley with his first
70 YEARS AGO – Lester Piggott, aged 18, wins the first of his record nine Derbys, on Never Say Die, the second American-bred colt to triumph in the Classic
80 YEARS AGO – As World War II continues, the Derby is staged at Newmarket as the New Derby for the fifth time and won by Ocean Swell.
90 YEARS AGO – Charlie Smirke rides the first of his four Derby winners on Windsor Lad, who records a then record-equalling time of 2:34.0.
100 YEARS AGO – Torrential rain sees the Derby run in very challenging conditions. Sansovino is successful, becoming the first of three Derby winners for his owner-breeder the 17th Earl of Derby.
200 YEARS AGO – Cedric wins easily under Jem Robinson. The jockey also wins the Oaks on Cobweb and gets married in the same week, reportedly winning a very large bet on the completion of the treble!

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
A taking winner on his penultimate start here in April, PORTSMOUTH since ran with plenty of credit when second at Goodwood on his first try this distance, and the form of that race has worked out particularly well in the interim. Others to note include Golden West, Persica and Whiskey Pete.

SELECTION
Some progressive three-year-olds line up here with Persica’s fair fourth in the London Gold Cup at Newbury a key piece of form. However, PORTSMOUTH gets the vote as a course winner who may appreciate the return to better ground. His trainer Andrew Balding has won this race three times in the last six years. Tom Dascombe won this race in 2021 with a 28/1 shot and his top weight Hot Fuss could be a frame contender.

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
Stall one could allow SPARKS FLY to dictate this contest from the front, having run respectably over 7f on her return at Haydock. Highly progressive throughout last season, David Loughnane's filly looks capable of striking on the rise in grade, with Running Lion looking best placed to chase her home. Only a head separated Royal Dress (first) and Breege (third) at Goodwood recently and they are likely to be thereabouts once again.

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
This can go the way of the evergreen REGAL REALITY, who hasn't scored since taking this contest last year from the reopposing Highland Avenue (second) but his two efforts so far this year have been encouraging. Ryan Moore getting back on board is a big plus, and it may be the unexposed Embesto that gives him the most think about, having done well as a three-year-old. Epictetus and Royal Scotsman have the form to get involved in proceedings as well.
WIN: REGAL REALITY

Eight runners head to post, some with more questions than answers on recent showings. REGAL REALITY landed the 2023 edition and has a good record with Ryan Moore in the plate. He can be forgiven his run at Chester last time when slowly away and is better judged on his encouraging seasonal debut at Newmarket. Sean had some fair placed form at Meydan in group races and if forgiven, his run on dirt last time is a decent price runner who can get competitive.

A wide-open contest and so only a tentative vote can go to MART. Knicks (winner), Vince L'Amour (second), Due For Luck (third) and Blue Storm (fourth) all met at Chester 24 days ago and each are entitled to make their presence felt once again, while Grandlad and Irish-raider Sturlasson are others to consider.

High draws are usually advantageous on the sprint course at Epsom, with the first running of last year’s
Betfred 3yo Dash being won hard up the stands side rail. DUE FOR LUCK is well named having had little luck at Chester, flying home late just behind Vince L’Amour, and has fared well with the draw in stall 19. At a bigger price, Irish raider Sturlasson only landed a maiden last time, but he did it in style and that will have given him confidence, Oisin Murphy also a notable booking.
DAYS OF THE WEEK
The Derby has been run on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, and usually takes place on the first Saturday in June. It was permanently switched from Wednesday to Saturday in 1995.

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
CLARENDON HOUSE defeated Looking For Lynda (second) at York last time out and though the latter is 5lb better off, it might not be enough to see that form reversed. The son of Mehmas, who produced a career-best performance that day, is now 11lb higher than when a narrow third in this event 12 months ago and looks destined for Pattern races once again. Silky Wilkie finds himself on a competitive mark and could be revitalised by the addition of first-time cheekpieces. A strong pace would bring Alligator Alley into this, and Night On Earth should not be underestimated either.
WIN: CLARENDON HOUSE

SELECTION
I’m not sure the record for five furlongs will fall this year on ground on the softer side of good, but it will still be a quick time in the Aston Martin “Dash”. Night On Earth beat Looking For Lynda over track and trip at the April meeting, but the vote goes to the ultra-consistent DEMOCRACY DILEMMA for sprint king Robert Cowell. Chipstead looked full of zest on a recent Epsom course gallop and is off a lower mark than winning over the minimum trip at York last May. He is worth a second look.
The World’s Greatest Flat Race
THE BETFRED DERBY
In 1776, ‘Gentleman’ Johnny Burgoyne, a soldier, playwright and politician who married into the Derby family and had passed on the lease of his Surrey mansion, the Oaks, to the 12th Earl of Derby, Edward Smith-Stanley, urged his friend to introduce a race for three-year-old fillies over a mile and a half to emulate old comrade in arms Anthony St Leger, founder of the St Leger at Doncaster.
Three years later, on May 14th 1779, the Downs above the spa town of Epsom hosted the initial Oaks and, appropriately, Lord Derby’s Bridget was victorious. At a celebratory party that evening, Burgoyne proposed, because the Oaks had been such a great success, a similar race should be run for both colts and fillies.
Sir Charles Bunbury, a distinguished figure in the world of horseracing, was behind the concept of racing over a mile or a mile and a half. Legend has it that Bunbury and Derby discussed the possibility and all that was left to do was name the race. Apparently, it was the toss of a coin in the latter’s favour that secured the race title, which started a worldwide franchise and lives on as strongly as ever.
On May 4th 1780, the inaugural Derby Stakes was run for £1,065 15s. Despite losing the flip of the coin, Bunbury gained some compensation when Diomed carried his pink and white silks to success over a mile. The distance was changed to the present mile and a half in 1784.
Lord Derby had to wait until 1787 before he saw his colours triumph in the Classic, when the previously unraced Sir Peter Teazle scored under Sam Arnull. Sir Peter Teazle was retired to stud in October 1789 and developed into a great sire.
By the middle of the 19th Century, The Derby had established itself as the most important race of the year in Britain with many thousands flocking to Epsom Downs where there was also a huge fair.
The Classic used to be run on the first Wednesday in June, but since 1995 has taken place on the first Saturday of that month. The British Parliament did not sit on Derby Day for many years, such was the prestige of the premier Classic.
Copies of the race were spawned around the world and there are well over 100 different Derbys, some very illustrious like the Kentucky Derby and others less so.
After the American Civil War, the Kentucky thoroughbred industry experienced hard times and Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark represented a group interested in reviving racing in the US state. He travelled to England and France in 1872 to study European horseracing. While in England, Colonel Clark saw the famous Derby at Epsom Downs and, when he returned to Louisville, he made plans to create a race like the one he had witnessed.
The first Kentucky Derby was run at Churchill Downs in 1875. The fact that the Kentucky Derby takes place on dirt rather than turf and over a mile and a quarter rather than a mile and a half does not diminish the sense of flattery towards Epsom Downs. The name Derby was used in America and many other countries to denote the best race for three-year-olds.
Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey has been the stage for the premier British Classic, except during both World Wars (1915-1918, 1940-1945) when the course was used to house prisoners of war. A substitute race, the New Derby, was staged at Newmarket instead.
The Betfred Derby, a supreme challenge for three year olds over the unique undulating Epsom Downs track, remains the most prestigious Flat race in the world. It is staged for the 245th time in 2024 and sponsored for the second time by Betfred. Its prize fund stands at £1,500,000.
The Derby boasts an illustrious roll of honour, which includes Bay Middleton, Ormonde, Isinglass, Hyperion and Bahram, while the last 60 years alone have seen such luminaries prevail as Sea-Bird, Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Shergar, Nashwan, Generous, Lammtarra, Galileo, High Chaparral, New Approach, Sea The Stars and Golden Horn.
Such names contribute to The Derby’s rich history, partly through their outstanding performances over Epsom Downs but also, for some, through their legacy as leading stallions. Galileo, European champion sire in 2008 thanks largely to his Derby winner New Approach and Coronation Cup victor Soldier Of Fortune and again from 2010 to 2020 inclusive, demonstrated his prowess over the course in 2001. Galileo has since sired a record five winners of The Betfred Derby, most recently Serpentine in 2020.
The Betfred Derby, Betfred Oaks and Holland Cooper Coronation Cup are all part of the QIPCO British Champions Series.

THE ROAD TO THE BETFRED DERBY
CITY OF TROY
The QIPCO 2000 Guineas Newmarket - Saturday 4th May
Unbeaten at two, few horses have gone into a three-year-old campaign with the weight of expectation that City Of Troy found himself under last month. Having won the Group Two bet365 Superlative Stakes and Group One Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket in 2023, all eyes were on Ballydoyle’s star colt going into the QIPCO 2000 Guineas on the Rowley Mile. However, the 4/6 favourite was never in contention and finished a hugely disappointing ninth of 11 runners in the first Classic of the year Trainer Aidan O’Brien was left puzzled by the below par performance but remains convinced of his potential.
LOS ANGELES
The Cashel Palace Derby Trial Stakes Leopardstown - Sunday 12th May
Aidan O'Brien's son of Camelot remains unbeaten after a workmanlike return to the track when landing the Leopardstown Derby Trial. Ballydoyle are no stranger to having a leading Betfred Derby hope and look to once again hold a strong hand with City Of Troy and Los Angeles. The latter was unbeaten as a juvenile and always shaped as though he'd be better over a trip. At Epsom he'll be taking on an extra two furlongs but that should only bring about further improvement JockeyWayne Lordan suggested after the race he would come forward a fair bit for that effort and he should be high up on the shortlist for this year’s race
AMBIENTE FRIENDLY
The William Hill Lingfield Derby Trial Stakes Lingfield Park - Saturday 11th May
Ambiente Friendly didn't shape like a Derby horse when fourth in the Feilden at Newmarket on seasonal reappearance. He looked to be a keen going type in that race and at Lingfield he once again pulled himself to sit prominent under Callum Shepherd. Around the turn he raced wide but got himself to the front two furlongs out. From there he showed an excellent attitude to pull clear of the field and win the race by a rather emphatic four and a half lengths. James Fanshawe and The Gredley Family look to have a really nice type on their hands and may well follow in the footsteps of Anthony Van Dyck.
ANCIENT WISDOM
The Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Stakes York - Thursday 16th May
Economics produced one of the performances of the season when taking the Dante at York. His six length victory over the field was unexpected by most after he had only won a novice at Newbury by a length and a half. Unfortunately we won’t be seeing the Haggas trained runner today. While it is a great shame we won't get to see the Dante winner, we will get to watch Ancient Wisdom take to the track. He finished closest to Economics and Godolphin seem keen on the three-year-old, who had a stellar juvenile campaign. Expect him to put up a much better performance.

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
A host of exciting prospects head to post in what looks to be a mouth-watering renewal of Epsom's flagship race, and though City Of Troy disappointed in the 2000 Guineas last month, it would be folly to write the champion juvenile off. Stablemate Los Angeles returned to action with a comfortable success in the Derby Trial at Leopardstown and merits the utmost respect as he bids to extend his unbeaten record. Ancient Wisdom appeared to be crying out for a step up in trip when second in the Dante, while Ambiente Friendly, who took the Lingfield Derby Trial in impressive fashion, is also noted. However, there was lots to like about the way in which BELLUM JUSTUM landed the Blue Riband Trial over 1m2f here in April and with prior track experience in his arsenal, the Sea The Stars colt might offer some value.

SELECTION
The Betfred Derby revolves around City Of Troy Can he emulate his stablemate Auguste Rodin and bounce back from a poor QIPCO 2000 Guineas effort. Aidan O’Brien believes he can and that should be gospel for everyone to back the champion two-year-old, although stall one may be tricky The Ballydoyle Maestro also saddles the unbeaten Los Angeles and Euphoric, who was just behind the former at Leopardstown, in a bid for a tenth Betfred Derby victory. DANCING GEMINI is bred for this test and did so well to finish second in the French 2000 Guineas. He may well go one better in this classic. Bellum Justum won the Blue Riband Trial at Epsom so has valuable course experience, and that could help him run a big race at a big price
DEAD HEATS
There have been two dead-heats in Derby history. In 1828 - Cadland and The Colonel, with the former winning the run-off later that afternoon and in 1884 when St Gatien and Harvester could not be separated.
The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £648,859 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from 23rd March to 23rd June 2024.

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
In a typically wide-open affair that looks every inch as competitive as the C&D feature, IF NOT NOW gets the tentative vote. It was a testament to his ability that he was able to score twice last season without looking like the finished article, and the son of Iffraaj can build on his promising seasonal reappearance third recently to return to winning ways. Ziggy was runner-up behind a subsequent winner over 1m2f here when last seen, and he is respected stepping up in trip, while Kotari is likely to be popular with punters having brought up the hat-trick last month, but a 5lb rise demands more.
WIN: IF NOT NOW EACH-WAY: Ziggy

SELECTION
Kotari is a winning machine and is respected under Hollie Doyle. A 5lb rise from Ascot may not stop him as not a lot went right that day. He is taken on with ZIGGY, who chased home subsequent York winner Crystal Delight at the April meeting here, his first start for fifteen months and should strip fitter now over a trip he has won at previously. It would be great to see Not So Sleepy go well at the ripe old age of 12, but the drop in trip may count against him.

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
ALEEZDANCER impressed when scoring impressively over 6f at York a couple of weeks ago, making eye-catching headway from off the pace before asserting close home, and Jamie Spencer can deliver him late on again to defy a 6lb rise. Last year's winner Badri is just 2lb above that winning mark and he warrants respect sporting cheekpieces for the first time, while last-time-out winner Misty Grey completes the shortlist, for all that a 6lb rise demands more from him.

SELECTION
Lots of Epsom regulars line up for the last. 2022 winner Mr Wagyu has run two good races this season and goes well here while last year’s 1-2 Badri and Apollo One are back for more. With a much better draw and some solid handicap form subsequently, APOLLO ONE can gain a well-deserved success. Al Barez is respected on a hat-trick and has winning form on turf too after his recent all-weather success while Aleezadancer won well at York, but any drying of the ground could count against him.
