With Thanks and Farewell To Julie Budd

I would like to take this opportunity to extend my thanks, and those of The Jockey Club, the Racecourse Committee and the wider executive team, to Julia as her term as the Chair of Epsom Downs concludes. Today’s Jubilee events are momentous for this unique and historic racecourse and our sport more widely, and it is a fitting end to Julia’s tenure and the dedication she has shown in her time as Chair. Since taking up the position in June 2016, Julia has been a valued and guiding influence on The Jockey Club’s stewardship of The Derby. In that time she has seen the race’s published value rise to £1.5 million ensuring it remains the richest in the UK, as well as strengthening the ties between this racecourse and the community in which it sits. Julia’s tenure as chair has also seen a race which was first run in 1780, and which has since become known all over the world, face challenges never encountered before. Julia’s passion, experience and sound judgment have helped to ensure that Epsom Downs finishes her term with the eyes of the world focused upon The Derby, and ready for a new and exciting chapter in the years to come. The sport is also fortunate that Julia will continue in her role as Chair of both the Racing Foundation and the British Racing School. I know that as a committed racing fan and owner this racecourse and its most famous contest will always hold a special place in Julia’s heart. It is testament to her time as Chair that the feeling will always be mutual. Sandy Dudgeon Senior Steward The Jockey Club
