Welcome
THE JOCKEY CLUB
WELCOMES YOU
Welcome to Epsom Downs Racecourse
A very warm welcome to Epsom Downs for Cazoo Derby Day, featuring the 243rd running of the world’s greatest Flat race and one of the greatest days in horseracing. Derby Day is always a special date in the calendar, but we are particularly excited that today is part of the official Platinum Jubilee celebrations to mark 70 years of Her Majesty The Queen’s reign. We are so thrilled to have you all with us for racing’s most spectacular carnival in this historic year. Also joining us will be a host of Her Majesty’s current and former jockeys, trainers and retired racehorses, all of whom will join in the celebrations of The Queen’s remarkable contribution to racing and the nation. I would like to thank Cazoo for their sponsorship of this two-day fixture, as well as their support of four of today’s seven races. We are also grateful to World Pool, Simpex Express and the Japan Racing Association (JRA) for their generous sponsorship this afternoon. I am delighted that Masayuki Goto, President and CEO of The Japan Racing Association is here to present the Tokyo Trophy. I would also like to welcome members of the International Thoroughbred Breeders’ Federation. The highlight of the day is The Cazoo Derby, the most significant race in the Flat calendar. Last year’s winner was Adayar, who went on to become the first Derby winner to win the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes in 20 years. At 4.30pm we will watch The Cazoo Derby (In Memory of Lester Piggott) - the first time the race has ever been run in memory of an individual. This follows the sad news of the death of the most successful rider in the history of the race, with nine Derby victories to his name. Lester was one of the greatest jockeys of the modern era and there will be a minute’s applause at 4pm today in his memory. Away from the racecourse there is plenty to see. Inside The Queen Elizabeth II Stand today there is a collection of one-off hats inspired by the seven decades of The Queen’s reign, designed by leading milliners, which will be auctioned in aid of Brain Tumour Research. More information on how to bid is available later in this racecard and I would urge you to take a look. On The Hill we have introduced the Jubilee Family Festival, which will provide a host of fun entertainment for guests of all ages and a wonderful way for young families to enjoy the day. Interactive displays and activities abound in The Racing Showcase Area, which features some of the wonderful charities and organisations who support the racing industry, whilst highlighting The Queen’s passion for horses. We hope that however you are spending your time with us, you have a wonderful day at Epsom Downs and I wish all of our runners and their connections the very best of luck.
