WELCOME TO
Welcome to our opening day of the West Country Weekend, BetMGMHaldonGoldCupDay.Thisisthehighlightofourseason here at Exeter, and we are delighted that you are able to join us.
The Grade 2 BetMGM Haldon Gold Cup is off at 2:25pm, and last year’s winning trainer Joe Tizzard has the leading contender in the race with JPR One. The six-runner contest looks a competitive contest and we’re looking forward to seeing whose name will be added to the prestigious role of honour later today.
Another highlight on the card is the highly anticipated chase debut of Captain Teague, trained by Paul Nicholls and ridden by Champion jockey Harry Cobden in the ICL Conscious Of Our Impact ‘Future Stars’ Silver Bowl Novices’ Chase. The Grade 1 winning hurdler has won three of his six starts under Nicholls and is favourite to add to his tally today.
Ahead of racing today, we would like to encourage you to head to the Parade Ring to see Gold Cup hero and our racecourse ROR Ambassador, Native River Native River was a star on the track for his connections, and more recently has been stealing headlines in the show ring with his latest achievements coming at the Horse of The Year Show. He will be in the Parade Ring from 12pm today.
As ever, we would like to thank all our partners for today, including BetMGM, ICL, South West Rail Solutions, GoSkyDive and Gallagher Insurance. We hope that they have a wonderful day.
We are celebrating our third year of the West Country Weekend and are delighted to see how it has grown since 2022. I would like to thank all the team at Exeter and Wincanton for their hard work in putting on these two special days and hope to continue to see them flourish
Finally, we hope you all have a great day with us and continue the brilliant weekend of racing at Wincanton tomorrow. We hope to see you back here on Monday 18th November for our next meeting
Jack Parkinson General Manager

THE HISTORIC HALDON GOLD CUP
The first Haldon Gold Cup was run in October 1982 as a weight-for-age race and is now celebrated as the ‘jewel in Exeter’s Crown.’ This is a race steeped in rich racing history.
The feature fixture is an early season highlight at Exeter Racecourse and typically attracts some of the country’s best two mile chasers.
It is also considered a stepping-stone to the world’s most prestigious race over this distance, the Queen Mother Champion Chase which takes place at The Festival the following March.
Henrietta Knight has enjoyed numerous successes in the renowned Grade 2 chase winning a record four times with Best Mate (2001), Edredon Bleu (2002 and 2003) and Impek (2006) She reflects: “It is always exciting to win that particular race You get a tremendous reception and everyone is so welcoming. It’s at the beginning of the season and a prestigious race to win. If you do well, you really look forward to the rest of the season.”
Paul Nicholls has saddled eight winners to date in Haldon Hill’s most esteemed stage and he speaks fondly of it as ‘one of the early chasing highlights of the season’ He agrees: “I’ll try and save a nice horse for it. It’s a very good start for two-mile horses. Kauto Star finished second in the race in 2005 before he went on to win the Tingle Creek, and we’ve won it with Lake Kariba, Flagship Uberalles, Azertyuiop, Tchico Polos, Vibrato Valtat and in 2017, Politologue.” In 2020 Greaneteen added his name to the roll of honour and went on to win the Celebration Chase at Sandown and the Tingle Creek in 2021.
This race has acted as a benchmark early on in the career of many iconic racehorses who have then gone on to make history The likes of Cue Card and Sabin du Loir have claimed this title and the 2024 Haldon Gold Cup is set to be just as exhilarating.
Last year’s running was won by the Joe Tizzard-trained Elixir De Nutz in the hands of jockey Freddie Gingell. The charming grey gelding raced heartily in company with Paul Nicholl’s Solo at the front of the six-strong field until the second last fence, when he took a clear lead and stormed home to a 31/4 length win. For trainer Joe Tizzard, the win was especially emotional, as he partnered the legendary Cue Card to victory in 2012 for his father Colin and now 11-years later returned to take the win as trainer with his nephew in the saddle. Jockey Freddie Gingell described his jumping as ‘unreal, every fence I go in and ask him, he jumps lovely...I asked him to go on and he just quickened up, he left them for dust almost’. Heartbreakingly, Elixir was later fatally injured in the Celebration Chase at Sandown in April 2024, a devastating loss for his connections and the entire racing community He will always be fondly remembered for his heart and courageous victory here in the Haldon Gold Cup
Today the Tizzard team will be hoping to repeat success in the race with two runners, JPR One and Scarface, whilst Dan Skelton also fields two in Heltenham and Etalon. Paul Nicholls, who trained the two-time winner Greanteen, sends out Sans Bruit under Bryony Frost whilst Venetia Williams saddles French-bred, Djelo.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION
Whilst we always endeavour to take appropriate steps to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment, an incident may occur which is beyond our control and it is, therefore, important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency. We employ Safety Officials whose job it is to ensure your safety In the event of a situation which requires a partial or full evacuation of the Stands, announcements will be broadcast and the Officials will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the enclosure quickly and quietly under their guidance.

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine BHA Officials ensure that racecourses deliver these standards. In addition Exeter Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in
the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
