W

elcome to the first day of the 2020 Qatar Goodwood Festival.

For generations, guests have been coming to Goodwood to share in my family’s passion for the sport. We are extremely sad not to be able to welcome you to the Racecourse for the start of the festival this year but do hope you will enjoy watching from home. The Racecourse first staged a public race meeting in 1802. The area, which was then known as The Harroways, witnessed Cedar, the third Duke of Richmond’s horse, being defeated by Rebel, who belonged to the Prince of Wales. In the years since then, the Racecourse has become synonymous with racing of the highest quality. Today’s racing promises to offer a thrilling spectacle, with the highlight being the Group 1 Al Ahaqab Goodwood Cup. This two-mile stayer’s race looks set to be another great race as Stradivarius goes in search of history by winning four consecutive Goodwood Cups. Another of the highlights on day one of the meeting is the Group 2 Qatar Lennox Stakes, which will see some of the very best seven-furlong specialists go head to head. Arguably the most prestigious race over this distance in the country, the Lennox has grown in stature over the years and this afternoon’s race looks hugely competitive. We are incredibly grateful to today’s race sponsors Qatar, Al Shaqab, Unibet, Veuve Clicquot, and the European Breeders Fund for their generous support of the fixture. I do hope that you enjoy a fantastic day of racing.

Lady Muriel Gordon Lennox departs for the races from Goodwood House in 1906.

The 1884 winner of the Goodwood Cup, St Simon, was an outstanding racehorse, who was later referred to as the most influential stallion of the late Victorian and Edwardian era.

Winner of the Richmond Stakes in 1895, Persimmon was the best racehorse owned by King Edward VII.

Today ’s Feature The Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup

One of the oldest events in the racing calendar, the Group 1 Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup was established in 1812 when it was run over three miles. The race is open to three-year-olds and upwards. Although the distance was reduced to two miles in 1833, it then settled at two miles five furlongs from 1852 and is regarded as a real test of stamina. Its glittering role of honour is illuminated with the names of some of the sport’s most celebrated stayers, among them the amazing Double Trigger who carved himself a piece of racing history by becoming the first horse to win the Goodwood Cup three times in 1995, 1997 and 1998. King George IV was successful with the filly Fleur de Lis in 1829. She returned twelve months later to win the race again but was denied a third victory by Priam the following year. Other notable winners during the 19th century were the supremely tough and talented filly Virago in 1854 and the unbeaten St Simon, widely regarded as one of the greatest racehorses of all time, who left an indelible mark on the race in 1884. The race has been successfully targeted by a number of overseas-trained horses, the most charismatic of which was the Hungarian-bred mare Kincsem, who was unbeaten in 54 races and won the Goodwood Cup in 1878, despite having been left nearly a furlong behind at the start. There have been many outstanding performers who have won this race in recent times, including Persian Punch (2001/2003), whose ashes were scattered at Goodwood, and Yeats (2006/2008). Big Orange battled gamely to beat Quest For More by a neck in 2015 before returning to success in 2016. This year, the John Gosden trained Stradivarius looks to surpass Double Trigger’s triple victory in a bid for a fourth consecutive victory in the Qatar Goodwood Cup, following success over stalwart Big Orange in 2017, Torcedor in 2018 and Dee Ex Bee in 2019.

R acing on Saturday 1 August Pilot event at Goodwood Racecourse on Saturday 1st August The Qatar Goodwood Festival will be the very first event in the country to allow spectators to enjoy live sport once more. Goodwood was chosen by the government to run this pilot event and it will be conducted with strict observance to safety guidance to ensure the event carries minimal risk to attendees and the local community. With a capacity for 5,000 people, only annual members, their guests and participants of the sport will be admitted. This is a significant reduction in the usual attendance of 25,000 for this day and will allow social distancing measures to be upheld. The other four days of the festival Tuesday 28 – Friday 31 July, will be run as planned behind closed doors.

Ed Nicholson, who is the Head of Racing at Unibet, our official betting partner of festival week, shares his thoughts on today’s racing. Race 1, 1.10pm

The British European Breeders Fund EBF Fillies’ Handicap

Jim Crowley has a serious book of rides throughout the week and can get off to a flying start aboard Wasaayef who makes her handicap debut here. The John Gosden-trained three-year-old is the most lightly-raced filly in the field and has potential to better than her opening handicap mark.

Race 2, 1.45pm

The Unibet You’re On Handicap Stakes

First of 9 Unibet-sponsored races this week and Mark Johnston can get off the mark with Maydanny who has a good draw in 1. He steps up in trip here and wouldn’t be the first horse from this stable to bounce back from a disappointing run last time.

Race 3, 2.15pm

The Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes

Battleground, Found’s first foal, is Unibet’s current 2020 2000 Guineas favourite and will be a short order to win here having taken the Chesham at Royal Ascot last time. Devious Company though is the selection. He stepped up from his two wins to finish seocnd in the G2 Superlative stakes at Newmarket last time and looks sure to run his race at a value price.

Race 4, 2.45pm

The Qatar Lennox Stakes

There are not many Group events over this 7f distance, so it’s no surprise that you tend to get specialists at this trip. Sir Dancealot is one. He has won this race for each of the last two years and will run well again. But I’m going for another 7f specialist in Space Blues. A four-time winner at this trip, he has taken a Listed & G3 event this season, and can continue his progression by winning this G2.

Please note all runners and races are subject to change.

Read Through the Card – Continued Race 5, 3.15pm

The Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup

Stradivarius goes for a record breaking fourth consecutive victory in this race. Ironically, he started the sequence as a 3-y-o getting 13lbs from two-time winner Big Orange, and the sands of time may catch up with him today as he now must give 15lbs to a 3-y-o in Santiago. Impressive as his Ascot Gold Cup victory was, there remains a niggling doubt as to how much it will have taken out of him. Santiago is the value bet.

Race 6, 3.45pm

The Qatar Handicap

At 11 years young, Caspian Prince rolled back the years to win a competitive Newcastle handicap two runs back and is taken to win his 18th race. Although yet to win at Goodwood (ran in G2 King George twice) he loves these speedy 5f tracks.

Race 7, 4.20pm

The British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes

Since taking over from his father, Richard Hannon has continued to fire in the winners on this racecourse and has recently unleased some very good two-year-olds. He had the 1-2 in this race in 2018, and Riffaa Wonder can continue the trainer’s good record in this race.

Race 8, 4.55pm

The British European Breeders Fund EBF Fillies’ Handicap

Jim Crowley can finish where he started - with a winner. Asiaaf has already won over the course with today’s jockey aboard and this step up in distance should suit on what is set to be only her fourth start. She has looked inexperienced in her last two races and is the type to do better with racing.

Please note all runners and races are subject to change.

2019 WINNER: MAID FOR LIFE 3 8 6 P J McDonald 12-1 (Charlie Fellowes) 11 ran STEWARDS NOTED: HATEYA: Following its run on 4/7/2020 it was reported that the horse was slow to leave the stalls.

Race Summary This is a wide-open contest but marginal preference is for TOMORROW'S DREAM, who bumped into a useful rival when finishing second at Newbury. The daughter of Oasis Dream did not get a clear run on that occasion and she could provide her supporters with some valuable compensation. Wasaayef has some good form to her name from novice company and even an opening mark of 93 may underestimate her ability. Angel Power is another unexposed type who merits respect, while Declared Interest and Vividly complete the shortlist.

Race Summary

CAPE CAVALLI stepped up on his promising Newcastle comeback when scoring readily at York and with Cieren Fallon's valuable claim cancelling out part of his 8lb rise, he might be able to complete the double. Derevo is entitled to strip fitter for his Doncaster reappearance last month and makes plenty of appeal lining up off the same mark of 96. Alternative Fact and Red October are other in-form players to consider in a competitive handicap.

Race Summary Battleground is likely to be very popular in the market following his win in the Chesham but that does not appear to be the strongest of form. With that in mind, a chance can be taken on DEVIOUS COMPANY, who only found one too good in the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket. That followed two novice/maiden victories and Tom Dascombe's colt remains open to improvement. Painless Potter's Coventry form gives him an each-way chance with the step up to 7f likely to suit, while Youth Spirit also merits respect.

Win: Devious Company

Danger: Battleground

The first race meeting at Goodwood was staged by the third Duke of Richmond in 1801. The official start to Goodwood’s long racing heritage was a two-day meeting held under Jockey Club rules in April the following year. This meeting, Goodwood’s only one of the year, moved to late July in 1814 and the festival, now run over five days, has remained at the same time of year ever since.

Race Summary Space Blues got the better of D'bai at Longchamp last month and that form has been bolstered by the latter's subsequent win at Haydock. Glorious Journey adds another string to Charlie Appleby's bow and it will take a good one to beat his trio, but perhaps DUKE OF HAZZARD is just that. The son of Lope De Vega is three from three here and only lost second close home in the Summer Mile last time. Back down in trip, he could strike. Marie's Diamond is likely to give a bold sight from the front, while fellow northern raider Safe Voyage must be considered after winning easily in Listed company at Epsom.

Danger: Space Blues

He has won three times from 1m to 1m 6f on ground varying from good to soft. Won on his latest outing when 2-1fav in the Group 1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at Curragh over 1m 4f (good) last month, beating Tiger Moth by a head. Interesting in receipt of 15lb all round. Official BHA Rating 115

Race Summary The remarkable STRADIVARIUS has won the last three runnings of this contest and he can strike again. The fact that Queen's Vase/Irish Derby hero Santiago receives 15lb makes things interesting, but John Gosden's champion stayer looked as well as ever when landing his third Ascot Gold Cup by 10 lengths and it would be a big shock were he to get turned over. Gold Cup runner-up Nayef Road is likely to set the fractions and should give another good account of himself.

2019 WINNER: GREEN POWER 4 8 13 P J McDonald 16-1 (John Gallagher) 13 ran STEWARDS NOTED: ORNATE: Following its run on 11/7/2020 it was reported that the horse suffered interference in running.

Race Summary Having returned with a Haydock defeat of Acclaim The Nation, CELSIUS then got no luck at all at the same venue before bouncing back to form to fill the runner-up berth at Newmarket. He was successful at this meeting 12 months ago and can confirm his superiority over Acclaim The Nation, who has held his form since and is 4lb better off. Final Venture was a sound fifth in a warm Ascot handicap, while Recon Mission is worth another try back at the minimum.

2019 WINNER: COBRA EYE 2 9 0 Frankie Dettori 15-8 (John Quinn) 10 ran

Race Summary There is a host of interesting newcomers in this, not least John Gosden's Tawleed and the 130,000-euro purchase Skibo Castle. Some of those who have already tasted racecourse action have shown plenty of promise, though, including ALKUMAIT. Marcus Tregoning's colt went into plenty of notebooks when looking all at sea at Newbury before coming home nicely for fourth, and there should be a lot more to come from him. Majd Al Arab got within a neck of success at Newmarket and is likely to make this a real test.

Win: Alkumait

Danger: Majd Al Arab

The connections of the winner, if qualified under the Rules of the Plus 10 bonus scheme, will share a prize of ÂŁ10,000.
