elcome to the second day of the 2020 Qatar Goodwood Festival. Today’s Group 1 Qatar Sussex Stakes is the highlight of the card and is sure to be another thrilling clash between the classic generation and their elders.

This could be the best Group 1 Qatar Sussex Stakes that we have had in quite some time. Respective English and Irish 2000 Guineas winners, Kameko and Siskin, line up on the South Downs in a mouth-watering renewal of the race. They will be joined by impressive older horses, Mohaather and Circus Maximus in a clash of the generations. We are extremely grateful to our sponsors Qatar, Unibet, British Stallion Studs, Markel Insurance, Theo Fennell and the European Breeders Fund for their generous support of today’s racing. As we look forward to a total of seven races this afternoon, I hope that you are able to join us at home to celebrate a memorable day of racing at Goodwood.

King Edward VII and the Prince of Wales depart from Goodwood House for the races in the Royal car, accompanied by the seventh Duke of Richmond.

The 1884 winner of the Goodwood Cup, St Simon, was an outstanding racehorse, who was later referred to as the most influential stallion of the late Victorian and Edwardian era.

Today ’s Feature The Qatar Sussex Stakes

The Group 1 Qatar Sussex Stakes is the flagship race of the five-day Festival and has taken on even greater importance since a groundbreaking partnership with its title sponsor. This has become Goodwood’s race of champions, with a reputation of bringing together some of the most outstanding horses in training year-on-year. Inaugurated in 1841 when run as a sprint, the Sussex Stakes has undergone several major changes in the intervening years but has not looked back since it was opened up to three-year olds and older horses in 1960. In its early years, it provided a stage to showcase the talents of King Edward VII’s Derby winner Minoru. In 1954, there was another Royal winner when Landau won sporting the colours of Her Majesty The Queen. The remarkable filly Petite Etoile, sent off the 1-10 favourite in 1959, was an outstanding winner, as was the great Brigadier Gerard, who ran his four rivals ragged in 1971. Most of the best milers in recent years feature on the race’s distinguished role of honour – Kris (1979), Chief Singer (1984), Soviet Star (1987), Warning (1988), Zilzal (1989), Aljabr (1999), Giant’s Causeway (2000), Rock of Gibraltar (2002) and Canford Cliffs (2010). Then came Frankel, who went on to create a piece of Goodwood racing history by becoming the first horse to win the race twice before eventually retiring unbeaten in 14 races. The 2017 meeting saw a surprise result with seven-year-old Here Comes When fending off the hot favourite Ribchester under challenging conditions to take the prize at 20/1. Another seven-year-old, Lightning Spear followed up in 2018 - the popular chestnut, placed in six G1 contests, claimed victory before being retired. Last year saw a thrilling win for Too Darn Hot, trained by John Gosden, who fought off Circus Maximus by half a length, to take his third Group 1 win. This year Siskin comes here off the back of an impressive Irish 2,000 Guineas success, and remains unbeaten from his five starts. He will take on the English 2000 Guineas hero, Kameko, who drops back to the mile after running in the Derby earlier this month. They will go up against the older horses for the first time here, with Summer Mile winner Mohaather entering the fray and dual Royal Ascot winner and last year’s runner-up, Circus Maximus, also in the mix. It could be a Qatar Sussex Stakes to savour.

R acing on Saturday 1 August Pilot event at Goodwood Racecourse on Saturday 1st August The Qatar Goodwood Festival will be the very first event in the country to allow spectators to enjoy live sport once more. Goodwood was chosen by the government to run this pilot event and it will be conducted with strict observance to safety guidance to ensure the event carries minimal risk to attendees and the local community. With a capacity for 5,000 people, only annual members, their guests and participants of the sport will be admitted. This is a significant reduction in the usual attendance of 25,000 for this day and will allow social distancing measures to be upheld. The British Stallion Studs EBF Fillies’ Handicap

Be More continues to improve for racing, and put up her most impressive performance yet for a step up in trip last time out at Sandown. Given she has winning form on ground varying from good to firm to soft, she looks the most likely winner. But she will need to improve again from an all-time high mark of 90.

R a c e 2, 1.50 p m

The Unibet You’re On Goodwood Handicap Stakes

True Destiny was third, beaten less than a length, in this race twelve months ago and with a couple of good runs under his belt this month is taken to go two places better this time around. He finds himself just 4lbs higher in the handicap from last year while his latest third at Newbury seemed to suggest that a return to this distance will suit. He has finished in the top three in 12 of his last 13 races, winning on five occasions, rating a solid each way selection here.

R a c e 3, 2.15 p m

The Unibet 3 Boosts A Day Handicap Stakes

Mambo Nights has promised much and is finally starting to deliver on his potential having won each of his last two races. Trained by Unibet ambassador Richard Hannon he has a decent draw here and if able to dictate could be difficult to peg back. Mark Johnston has won this race four times in the last eight seasons and a small each-way bet on his King’s Caper is suggested as an alternative big priced play.

R a c e 4, 2.45 p m

The Markel Insurance Molecomb Stakes

The Molecomb is traditionally one of the best two-year-old sprint races of the season. Having finished 4th in Royal Ascot’s Queen Mary, Sardinia Sunset took a listed event at York last time and sets the standard here. She has form on differing types of ground and has already posted some decent speed figures. Those looking for an alternative could do worse than to take a closer look at the once raced Steel Bull who put up an eye-catching performance at Naas to win in emphatic style.

Please note all runners and races are subject to change. 30

The Qatar Sussex Stakes

What a wonderful renewal of the Sussex Stakes with any number of likely winners. Most will feel that the winner will come from the quartet of Siskin, Kameko, Mohaather or Circus Maximus, but I’m drawn to the double figure odds on the impeccably bred Vatican City who is the most inexperienced member of the field having run just 4 times. It’s likely he found the distance beyond him in the Derby last time, but he must have a decent chance here based on his 2nd to Siskin in the Irish 2,000 Guineas.

R a c e 6, 3.45 p m

The British Stallion Studs Alice Keppel EBF Fillies’ Conditions Stakes

Spright fizzed up at York last time by 5 ½ lengths and is taken to follow up here. After that victory on the Knavesmire trainer Karl Burke spoke about running her in black type events. If up to that level, she should be able to take this conditions event in her stride against the opponents she faces today.

R a c e 7, 4.20 p m

The Theo Fennell Handicap

Richard Hughes had many great days at Glorious Goodwood as a jockey winning countless top races. Seven years ago, he took this very race when driving Magic City to a one length success and I’m taking Richard to win this race again as a trainer with Mister Snowdon. As a lightly raced three-year-old he is still open to improvement and already has decent form in the book.

Please note all runners and races are subject to change. 31

5 GEETANJALI (IRE) (41)

2019 WINNER: MANNAAL (IRE) 3 8 13 Megan Nicholls 12-1 (Simon Crisford) 10 ran

Race Summary Nkosikazi won impressively in a Group 3 at Newcastle last time but she may prove vulnerable giving 11lb and upwards to her rivals, particularly to the unexposed threeyear-olds in the line-up. The vote goes to CHAMADE, whose third at Newbury last month couldn't have worked out any better and the switch to handicap company for the first time makes her of considerable interest. Sandringham runner-up Waliyak and Musidora fifth Lake Lucerne are both open to further progression too.

Win: Chamade

Danger: Waliyak

In 1952 Goodwood became the first British racecourse to provide racegoers with live commentary. Racing commentary on BBC radio had begun five years earlier, again here at Goodwood.

The total racing surface at Goodwood covers an area of 35 acres and a specialist tractor operates for 960 hours throughout the season to prepare and maintain it.

600 bags of fertiliser are used throughout the year to prepare the racing surface here at Goodwood – a total of 52,000 kilograms!

2019 WINNER: TIMOSHENKO 4 8 0 Luke Morris 9-1 (Sir Mark Prescott Bt) 19 ran

Race Summary In a wide-open contest, marginal preference is for SMART CHAMPION, whose most recent outing in the Northumberland Plate can be forgiven as that race favoured those who were close to the pace. Prior to that, the five-year-old was a fast-finishing fourth to Coeur de Lion in the Ascot Stakes and he could turn that form around on better terms. Summer Moon and Rochester House are closely matched with the selection based on their running at the Royal meeting and it would be no surprise to see both go well. Others to note are Blue Laureate, The Grand Visir and True Destiny.

Win: Smart Champion

Danger: Rochester House

The first race meeting at Goodwood was staged by the third Duke of Richmond in 1801. The official start to Goodwood’s long racing heritage was a two-day meeting held under Jockey Club rules in April the following year. This meeting, Goodwood’s only one of the year, moved to late July in 1814 and the festival, now run over five days, has remained at the same time of year ever since.

2019 WINNER: SIR RON PRIESTLEY 3 9 4 Franny Norton 6-1 (Mark Johnston) 13 ran STEWARDS NOTED: SOUND OF CANNONS:Following its run on 9/7/2020 it was reported that the horse ran too freely.

Race Summary A competitive affair which could go to the progressive MAMBO NIGHTS, who relished the step up to this distance when making it back-to-back victories on his handicap debut at Ripon. A Star Above is another hat-trick seeker to consider for the in-form yard of William Haggas, with Carlos Felix also of note following his eyecatching Ascot success. Mark Johnston has a great record in this and saddles Italian Derby second King's Caper and Glenties, who opened his account at Windsor latest, having shaped nicely over C&D earlier this summer. Encipher is interesting on his handicap bow having taken in the Dante last time, while any ease in the ground would make dual winner Win O'Clock a big player.

Win: Mambo Nights

Race Summary Significantly has gone close in each of his three starts to date and warrants plenty of respect representing Karl Burke, who won this race in 2017 with Havana Grey, but SARDINIA SUNSET could prove tough to beat in receipt of 3lb. She was a place in front of subsequent Super Sprint winner Happy Romance when fourth in the Queen Mary and justified skinny odds when landing a Listed contest at York last time. She looks rock-solid and will give this a big shake. Internationaldream might go well at longer odds.

Win: Sardinia Sunset

Successful twice at 7f on good and yielding ground. Third of 7 behind Palace Pier beaten 1 1/4l at 9-4 in the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes at Ascot over 1m (good) last month. Had run Kameko close in the 2000 Guineas prior to that and has viable place claims. Official BHA Rating 118

Race Summary This looks the best race of the season so far. 2000 Guineas winner Kameko (who had Wichita back in second that day) was ridden to get the trip when fourth in the Derby but, like most of the field, couldn't land a blow on Serpentine after the Ballydoyle front runner slipped the field. His finishing effort at Epsom suggested he didn't fully stay the distance, though, and the drop back to a mile appears a sensible step. However, having overcome a torrid trip to land the Irish 2,000 Guineas from Vatican City at the Curragh, exciting Ger Lyons representative SISKIN is taken to have his measure. Mohaather posted a career-best effort when landing the Summer Mile from San Donato at Ascot but conceding 8lb weight-for-age to the Classic winners will be no easy task.

Win: Siskin

Race Summary SPRIGHT proved that her 50/1 debut second at Doncaster was no fluke when going one better in impressive fashion at York. 2019 WINNER: DIRTY RASCAL (IRE) 3 8 11 Tom Marquand 7-1 (Richard Hannon) 18 ran STEWARDS NOTED: BOARDMAN: Following its run on 22/6/2020 it was reported that the horse hung right handed throughout.

Race Summary TORO STRIKE caught the eye when finishing fifth on his seasonal return in the Britannia at Royal Ascot last month and that performance suggested that he should have no problems stepping back in trip. Richard Fahey's colt was only beaten a length in a nursery over C&D last year and he is clearly on a workable mark. Arigato was far from disgraced in the Bunbury Cup and he is an obvious threat to the selection. Others to consider are Mountain Brave, Society Lion and Zhui Feng.

Win: Toro Strike

Danger: Arigato

Goodwood’s reputation as one of the pinnacles of the social calendar flourished under the seventh Duke of Richmond, who was a friend of King Edward VII and his son George V, both of whom stayed with His Grace for the Festival.

In 1830 when George IV thought he was on his deathbed such was his anxiety to find out the Goodwood results that he stationed a relay of post boys between Windsor and the racecourse to convey the results as they came through.
