W

elcome to Goodwood Racecourse for the fourth day of the 2020 Qatar Goodwood Festival.

This afternoon features the fastest race of the week with the Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes, a race named after King George V. This five-furlong contest will see the horses charge past the grandstands in a showcase of raw speed with the Charlie Hills-trained Battaash looking for a record-breaking fourth win in the contest. The King George Qatar Stakes is one of four Group races today, alongside the Group 3 Saint Clair Oak Tree Stakes, the Group 3 Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes and the Group 3 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate. Another highlight of today’s eight-race card is the Unibet Golden Mile, a hugely competitive handicap that is often one of the biggest betting races of the year at Goodwood. We are most grateful to Qatar, Unibet, Bonhams, Saint Clair, TDN Australia, European Breeders Fund and L’Ormarins for their generous support of this afternoon’s racing. I hope that you have a very enjoyable afternoon watching the thrilling racing taking place at Goodwood today.

Today ’s Feature The King George Qatar Stakes

A hotly-contested five-furlong event for three-year-olds and upwards, the Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes is Goodwood’s premier race for sprinters. A comparatively modern innovation in the context of Goodwood’s 216-year history, it was inaugurated in 1911 to mark the succession to the British throne of King George V the previous year. Sir Gordon Richards set a likely never-to-be-beaten record of riding the winner in six consecutive seasons beginning in 1947, but the legendary Lester Piggott is the race’s most successful jockey with an amazing nine wins, the last of which was Anita’s Prince in 1984. The brilliant mare Lochsong beat Paris House in a thrilling renewal in 1993 under Frankie Dettori. She returned twelve months later to register a second success and become one of only half a dozen horses to win the race twice. Like Lochsong, another talented mare Hever Golf Rose, who triumphed in 1995, went on to win the Group 1 Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp. The story of this race over the past three years has been dominated by the fastest horse in the world, Battaash. Ridden by Jim Crowley, trained by Charlie Hills and owned by Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the speedster sets his sights on yet another victory in this race, in the hope that he can join another multiple winner at the Qatar Goodwood Festival, Stradivarius, with four wins in a row in the same race at this historic meeting.

The Glorious Five

The Qatar Goodwood Festival has always held the most prestigious flat racing in the country and this is set to be a year of racing like no other. With two of the Glorious Five competing for their fourth victory on our hallowed turf alongside international favourites ready to defend their titles, this promises to be another historic year on the Downs. The Glorious Five Line-up Tuesday 28 July  The unbeatable triple winner, Stradivarius, returned to make history by winning his fourth Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup.

Wednesday 29 July  The two Guineas winners went head to head, the English Kameko and the unbeaten Irish hero, Siskin for what was to be described as the race of the summer so far. This year’s Qatar Sussex Stakes title, however, belongs to the Summer Mile winner, Mohaather, with a thrilling victory against an impressive line-up.

Thursday 30 July  Japanese sensation Deirdre revisited the hallowed turf of Goodwood in a bid to hold on to her title. With a top-class line-up, this year’s trophy went to the French Oaks heroine Fancy Blue.

Friday 31 July  There’s only one speed demon to contend with in the King George Qatar Stakes - Battaash returns to defend his title and look to take a fourth victory.

R acing on Saturday 1 August Pilot event at Goodwood Racecourse on Saturday 1st August The Qatar Goodwood Festival will be the very first event in the country to allow spectators to enjoy live sport once more. Goodwood was chosen by the government to run this pilot event and it will be conducted with strict observance to safety guidance to ensure the event carries minimal risk to attendees and the local community. With a capacity for 5,000 people, only annual members, their guests and participants of the sport will be admitted. This is a significant reduction in the usual attendance of 25,000 for this day and will allow social distancing measures to be upheld. The other four days of the festival Tuesday 28 – Friday 31 July, will be run as planned behind closed doors.

Ed Nicholson, who is the Head of Racing at Unibet, our official betting partner of festival week, shares his thoughts on today’s racing. Race 1, 1.10pm

The TDN Australia Handicap

Mafia Power runs here having been entered in several races during this week. The Richard Hannon trained three-year-old won in emphatic style last time out at Haydock and the step up in trip should suit this son of Gleneagles. He has to overcome a hike up the weights – having gone up 11lb for that victory but he has always struck me as a handicapper to follow and with Silvestre De Sousa back in the saddle, he is taken to follow up.

Race 2, 1.45pm

The Saint Clair Oak Tree Stakes

Group 1 winning mare One Master ran well in the Falmouth Stakes last time out, getting to within a length of Nazeef. Her class can see her home in this Group 3 contest. She finished fourth in this race two years ago, but is a much better filly these days, and with the William Haggas stable in good form, she can make a winning return to the track.

Race 3, 2.15pm

The Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes

A small but select field for this Group 3 contest. Charlie Hills lightly-raced Tilsit took his maiden by a jaw dropping 19 lengths last time and must be on the shortlist. Khaloosy didn’t win by 19 lengths but was nevertheless very impressive when landing the Britannia Handicap at Royal Ascot last time out by 4 ½ lengths on only his third start and the Roger Varian colt is taken to plunder this prize.

Race 4, 2.45pm

The Unibet Golden Mile Handicap

The Unibet Golden Mile is traditionally one of the most competitive races of the season and we are delighted to continue our sponsorship of this heritage handicap. So many with chances, but the draw is a crucial factor here when assessing your horse’s chances. 26 of the last 36 horses to have finished first, second or third have been drawn in eight or lower. Ante post favourite Montatham has drawn stall 15 and his odds have lengthened accordingly to 6/1. Conversely, David O’Meara’s improving four-year-old Prompting is in stall 2 and he showed his well-being by dotting up at York last Saturday. He must have outstanding claims. Vale of Kent almost caused a huge surprise from stall 17 last year and he is worthy of consideration given he has the third stall to let loose from this time around, but is higher in the weights.

Please note all runners and races are subject to change. 30

Read Through the Card – Continued Race 5, 3.15pm

The King George Qatar Stakes

To borrow a quote from Muhammad Ali, if any jockey dreamt last night of beating Battaash they should apologise to him this morning! The Sprint King is back at his favourite track where he is course record holder over this 5f trip and it would be a huge surprise if he didn’t complete a fourth consecutive victory in this race.

Race 6, 3.45pm

The L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Glorious Stakes

Globetrotting Desert Encounter returns to Goodwood in an attempt to win back to back Glorious Stakes’ and is taken to do so. The David Simcock trained eight-year-old had been out of sorts until his fine third in the G2 Princess of Wales’s Stakes, but he still has to find 1 ½ lengths on the runner up that day, Communique. But back on a track he thrives on, I expect him to win his first race since taking the G1 Canadian International last October.

Race 7, 4.20pm

The New Unibet Instant Roulette Nursery Handicap

This Unibet-sponsored nursery can go the way of the Unibet-sponsored ambassador Richard Hannon with Thank You Next. As many from her stable do, she improved for her racecourse debut when taking a novice fillies takes at Kempton – also sponsored by Unibet – by just a nose. She has any amount of improvement to come and can take this next, thank you.

Race 8, 4.55pm

British European Breeders Fund EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes

Many of these are making their debut, but one that isn’t is the John Gosden-trained Sarsaparilla who pulled well clear of the field when only finding the well-touted Fly Miss Helen too good at Newbury. She can make her experience tell here with cheekpieces retained.

Please note all runners and races are subject to change. 31

2019 WINNER: AKTAU 3 9 2 Andrea Atzeni 5-2 (Roger Varian) 13 ran

Race Summary CELESTRAN was unfortunate to bump into a well-handicapped rival when second at Ascot last time and that followed a third-placed finish to the subsequent Derby second, Khalifa Sat, in the Cocked Hat over C&D. The son of Dansili should be capable of winning off his current mark and he just gets the vote in an open contest. That said, Al Qaqaa is an obvious threat following his impressive defeat of Moomba at Newmarket last month, while Cepheus is another who merits a place on the shortlist.

Win: Celestran

Danger: Al Qaqaa

The first race meeting at Goodwood was staged by the third Duke of Richmond in 1801. The official start to Goodwood’s long racing heritage was a two-day meeting held under Jockey Club rules in April the following year. This meeting, Goodwood’s only one of the year, moved to late July in 1814 and the festival, now run over five days, has remained at the same time of year ever since.

One Master has done most of her racing in Group 1 company over the last year and should appreciate this drop in class/trip. The six-year-old was only beaten a length when fourth in the Falmouth at Newmarket recently and should go well. VALERIA MESSALINA won gamely at Cork in Group 3 company, though, and shaped like a filly with more to offer after just four starts. Under The Stars and Althiqa are closely matched and also merit consideration.

Win: Valeria Messalina

Race Summary KHALOOSY obliterated the opposition when landing a typically-hot renewal of the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot and Roger Varian's son of Dubawi can take the step up to this level in his stride if in similar form. My Oberon caught the eye when getting off the mark at York earlier this month and could be an improver for an in-form stable. 2019 WINNER: BEAT LE BON (FR) 3 8 13 Pat Dobbs 17-2 (Richard Hannon) 20 ran

Race Summary Despite being drawn widest of all in stall 15, MONTATHAM still makes plenty of appeal having taken his form to a new level this season. A 4lb rise for his most recent success at Sandown, where he reversed the form with subsequent Listed winner Dark Vision having finished second to him in the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot, appears very fair for William Haggas' gelding, who may yet prove better than a handicapper. Silver Hunt Cup winner Sir Busker, Cliffs Of Capri and Bless Him appeal most of the remainder.

Win: Montatham

Danger: Sir Busker

RACE FIVE

Winner of five races from 5f to 6f on ground varying from good to firm to good to soft. Beaten 1l by A’ali when second of 11 at 13-8fav last time in the Group 3 Coral Charge at Sandown over 5f earlier this month. Third to Battaash before that and likely to be thereabouts. Official BHA Rating 108

Race Summary BATTAASH is virtually unbeatable over this course and distance and attempts to win this for the fourth successive year having looked as good as ever when taking the King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot. Liberty Beach won the Molecomb Stakes over track and trip last year and arrives in decent form having finished third to the selection at the Royal meeting, before bumping into the thriving A'Ali when second at Sandown. Last year's Prix de l'Abbaye winner Glass Slippers is respected having finished fifth from the wrong side of the track at Ascot, while Ornate was third at 33/1 in this 12 months ago and could pick up some place money once again with Oisin Murphy booked.

Race Summary COMMUNIQUE (second) ran a blinder when ahead of Desert Encounter (third) in the Princess Of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket earlier this month and is taken to confirm that running here. Mark Johnston's charge also performed creditably when finding one too good at York over further a fortnight ago, and could claim compensation here. Pablo Escobarr was far from disgraced over an insufficient trip at Newbury last time and should enjoy this additional yardage. Alounak might need more rain to get involved.

Win: Communique

Danger: Desert Encounter

Hatta, winner of the 1977 Molecomb Stakes, has the distinction of being the first ever horse to run in Britain for Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum, who has gone on to establish himself as one of the world’s leading owners and the founder of the hugely successful Godolphin stables.

Goodwood’s reputation as one of the pinnacles of the social calendar flourished under the seventh Duke of Richmond, who was a friend of King Edward VII and his son George V, both of whom stayed with His Grace for the Festival.

In 1830 when George IV thought he was on his deathbed such was his anxiety to find out the Goodwood results that he stationed a relay of post boys between Windsor and the racecourse to convey the results as they came through.

2019 WINNER: HOMESPIN (USA) 2 9 3 James Doyle 7-1 (Mark Johnston) 14 ran

Race Summary ZAMAANI got off the mark at the third time of asking when comfortably disposing of his rivals at Windsor earlier in the month. Despite having to give 11lb and upwards to the opposition, he appears capable of further progression with the form of his first two races working out particularly well. Perotto makes considerable appeal following his C&D victory last month, while Kempton scorer Thank You Next and Julie Johnston, who carries a penalty after winning at York last weekend, are also respected.

600 bags of fertiliser are used throughout the year to prepare the racing surface here at Goodwood – a total of 52,000 kilograms!

The total racing surface at Goodwood covers an area of 35 acres and a specialist tractor operates for 960 hours throughout the season to prepare and maintain it.

Keep an eye on the week’s winners in the two-year-old races at The Qatar Goodwood Festival as you may be seeing a future Classic winner. Dr Devious, Mister Baileys, Ameerat, Shamardal , Sir Percy and Galileo Gold all tasted success here as juveniles before going onto Classic glory the next season.

Race Summary Sarsaparilla sets the standard following two second-placed finishes at Newbury and Kempton but the level she sets is not very high and a chance can be taken on BEAUTIFUL NEWS on debut. William Haggas' filly is out of Besharah, who won the Lowther and placed in the Cheveley Park for these connections in 2015, and the daughter of Shamardal merits plenty of respect.
