WELCOME & MEET THE TEAM
Welcome to Fontwell Park for our Spirit Hurdle Raceday! Thank you for joining us for the £50,000 Grade 2 Loch Lomond Whiskies National Spirit Hurdle meeting from the comfort of your homes. We have a total of 62 runners this afternoon with six declared for the feature race. The National Spirit Hurdle has often been used as a stepping stone for horses going on the Cheltenham Festival and is the racing highlight of the year here at Fontwell Park. This year is the 20th anniversary of the victory of Baracouda for French trainer Francois Doumen and owner JP McManus. The gelding won the Stayers’ Hurdle twice. The entries for this year’s race include the Grade 2 Unib et Persian War Novices’ Hurdle winner, McFabulous trained by Paul Nicholls. We also have the Micky Hammond trained, Cornerstone Lad who won the 2019 Grade 1 Betfair Fighting Fifth Hurdle. Nicky Henderson has entered the 2019 Grade 2 International Hurdle winner Call Me Lord. We would like to thank our sponsors today; Champagne PIAFF and Loch Lomond Whiskies for their support. Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE SUMMARY
TWENTY YEARS OF THE NATIONAL SPIRIT HURDLE Today’s National Spirit Hurdle, named after a triple Champion Hurdle winner, has often been a stepping stone for great horses on their way to Cheltenham Festival glory. The French-trained Baracouda was the top staying hurdler at the beginning of the 21st century. He used the National Spirit in 2001 as a warm-up for Cheltenham’s Stayers’ Hurdle but, unsuited by the much shorter distance of the Fontwell race, he only scraped home by a neck. He went on to win the Stayers’ Hurdle, and again the following year, and was second in the next two runnings. My Way De Solzen’s connections used similar tactics in 2006, taking in the National Spirit en route to a Stayers’ Hurdle triumph. Lough Derg was a tough front-runner who won a total of twelve races. The last of his victories, in 2009, was his second consecutive National Spirit, when in trademark style he rallied gamely to come out on top after looking beaten turning into the straight. Celestial Halo was the best horse to win the National Spirit since Baracouda. He had high class form from two miles to three, and over hurdles and fences. He was beaten by only a neck in a Champion Hurdle. His comfortable Fontwell victory in 2011 was one of his easier races. Lil Rockerfeller is rarely out of the money, whether he’s running on the flat, over fences or hurdles. He’s finished in the first three in 33 of his 47 races. He was an easy winner of the 2016 National Spirit and returned to finish second and third in the race in later years. He’s eleven now but is still running well. Camping Ground was having his first outing for Gary Moore in the 2017 National Spirit. He had a good lead over a decent field before halfway and astonished everyone by going further and further clear to win by a staggering 29 lengths. In an exciting finish to last year’s race, the former Coral Cup winner William Henry was ten lengths adrift of the leaders at the second last, but rallied gamely to outstay two classy rivals.

A potential match between McFabulous and BREWIN’UPASTORM, with narrow preference for the latter after having bolted up on his return to hurdling at Taunton last month. Paul Nicholls’ charge continues to impress and will provide stern opposition, while Molly Ollys Wishes warrants this shot up in grade after a recent hat-trick and may feature if either of the market principals fail to fire.

COMMITMENT TO HORSE WELFARE We are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries and maintaining the highest level of care. At every meeting there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action.
It is now a standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the course. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy in which to administer treatment and provides the horse with a calmer environment. Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse. To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy, please visit our website:
