Goodwood Races 2021

SUNDAY 6th JUNE OFFICIAL PROGRAMME

JUNE AFTERNOON RACING Welcome to June Afternoon Racing, the second fixture of four days of racing throughout June. Seven thrilling races are taking place this afternoon, with the third race, the Long View Selling Stakes, adding extra excitement, as the winning horse will be auctioned off in the Winner’s Enclosure immediately afterward. It has been fabulous to see many racegoers enjoying the newly-designed Charlton Hunt Restaurant. It offers an intimate dining experience at the heart of the Richmond Enclosure, with balcony views providing a beautiful backdrop to the hallowed turf graced by many a racing champion. Our thanks go to today’s sponsors, Jackson Stops whose generous support we are extremely grateful for. I hope you enjoy a fabulous afternoon in the sun on the South Downs and look forward to welcoming you back to Goodwood again soon. I would also like to wish the very best of luck to all our owners with horses running at Goodwood today.

The Duke of Richmond & Gordon Chairman, Goodwood Racecourse

The Course Course Characteristics Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

Position of Starting Stalls Straight Course-on stands side rail. Round Course-on inside rail except 1m 3f & 1m 4f-on outside rail.

2020:MEETING ABANDONED

STEWARDS NOTED: THE ATTORNEY: Following its run on 7/5/2021 it was reported that the horse ran too freely.

Race Summary Longlai had to settle for a silver medal at Newmarket when attempting to follow up his Beverley victory and Richard Hannon's in-form three-year-old has to be respected off the same mark. The Kodi Kid and The Attorney could prove leniently treated if repeating the best of their two-year-old form, while Starshiba shaped nicely over track and trip last time. However, preference is for PEROTTO, who has come up against some useful opposition when performing with real credit in a pair of competitive Newmarket handicaps so far this season.

Race Summary Order Of St John lines up off the same mark as when winning a 'hands and heels' apprentice handicap at Nottingham, with Alex Jary claiming 7lb rather than 5lb today, and he must enter calculations, but narrow preference is for GOLD SOUK. He has been running consistently well, on different surfaces over varying trips, and a repeat of his penultimate effort, which came over this distance, would see him go close. Grey Fox also warrants respect.

Danger: Order Of St John

Win: Gold Souk

Race Summary Last-start scorers Black Hill Storm and WEE LOCH LASS make most appeal in this seller, with preference for the latter on the basis that she gets weight from David Evans' charge and has achieved a lot more in her four starts so far. She won her maiden at Carlisle in determined fashion and can kick on now she's got her head in front. Accacia is improving between runs and is another to take seriously.

Race Summary A very competitive contest but the marginal preference is for LYDFORD, who caught the eye when staying on well in a 1m4f handicap at York last month. Roger Varian's gelding is a half-brother to the Gold Cup and Goodwood Cup winner Big Orange, which suggests that he should relish this step up in trip. East Asia has won impressively twice since arriving from the UAE and he is an obvious threat to the selection. Others to note are Call My Bluff, Ship Of The Fen and True Destiny.

Danger: East Asia

STEWARDS NOTED: FREE WIND: Following its run on 8/12/2020 it was reported that the horse ran green.

Tiger Beetle built on his Nottingham fifth behind Third Realm when going a couple of places better at the same course, and the first two have boosted the form since. Even so, a chance is taken on the fitness of FREE WIND, who is by Galileo and out of former smart racemare Alive Alive Oh, so it is no real surprise she sold for 325,000gns as a yearling. She was just ahead of the Lingfield Oaks Trial runner-up when fourth on her Wolverhampton debut and can only improve. Alkhattaaf is worth a second look on debut.

Danger: Tiger Beetle

STEWARDS NOTED: SHALANEZ: Following its run on 15/4/2021 it was reported that the horse hung left handed late-on. YOULLOVEMEWHENIWIN: Following its run on 13/5/2021 it was reported that the horse would prefer faster ground.

Race Summary SHALANEZ got within a neck of success on her second start at Wolverhampton last year and though she was not as impressive on her reappearance at Newmarket, Richard Hannon's filly could improve for that run and for the switch to handicap company. Quarantini makes her debut for Hughie Morrison after switching from Richard Fahey's yard and could be better down in trip, while Bahia Star ran on well to win over a mile at Brighton but could prove just as effective over this distance.
