elcome to Goodwood Racecourse for the second day of the 2022 Qatar Goodwood Festival.
As we look forward to a total of eight races this afternoon, The Qatar International Stakes gets us underway. The £400,000 mile contest, sponsored by Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club, is the most valuable race in UK Arabian racing, before today’s £1 million Group 1 Qatar Sussex Stakes. The Qatar Sussex Stakes is the highlight of the week in terms of prestige and it is sure to be another thrilling clash between three-year-olds, otherwise known as the Classic generation, and their elders. The supporting card will feature the Group 3 Markel Molecomb Stakes. The race, which is run over five furlongs for two-year-olds, looks highly competitive, and we are sure to see a star of the future in the making. We are always true to our rich heritage here on the South Downs, while constantly moving forward to develop the Racecourse. The Earl’s Lawn, located at the heart of the Gordon Enclosure, is a recent addition that brings to life a day at the races. Racegoers can enjoy live music, seafood and champagne at the Veuve Clicquot bar or simply sit in the sun and celebrate with friends and family. We are incredibly grateful to our sponsors, Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club, Coral, Markel, Whispering Angel, World Pool and the British European Breeders’ Fund. I hope that you have a memorable afternoon here at Goodwood.
The Duke of Richmond & Gordon
3
Glorious Goodwood
The first Duke of Richmond’s father, King Charles II loved horse racing and the Duke was famously conceived during a house party where everyone was staying for racing at Newmarket. ‘Match’ racing between two horses was a fashionable sport enjoyed by the early Dukes on the Harroway, the open stretch of land on the South Downs above Goodwood. In 1801, the third Duke of Richmond held a private race meeting for the Sussex Militia. The event was such a success that the following year he held Goodwood’s first public race meeting. The Goodwood meeting took place every summer from then on, becoming a firm fixture in the racing calendar. The fifth Duke of Richmond, influenced by his great friend Lord George Bentinck, threw resources into the racecourse, including major earthworks in 1829 to extend the racecourse to the foot of the Trundle. Innovations included the pre-race parade of horses and public saddling, designed to hinder the skulduggery that went on behind the scenes and with which the sport was rife. From those early days, ‘Glorious Goodwood’ – as the meeting was dubbed by the press – become part of the English social season. King Edward VII, who attended every year, famously dubbed the meeting ‘a garden party with racing tacked on’ and helped relax the dress-code from the more formal morning coats and top hats to straw hats and lounge suits. The Goodwood meeting became the final fling of the season before everyone departed for Cowes Regatta on the Isle of Wight or the Highlands of Scotland. For much of its early history, racing took place over three consecutive days (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), with Tuesday being added later. Under the late (tenth) Duke of Richmond, Saturday racing was introduced and the race programme enlarged from four to twenty days across the season. Today, Goodwood is rightly hailed as the most beautiful racecourse in the world and the place where many of the greatest racehorses have battled it out on the top of the South Downs.

The Course course characteristics Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

Won five in a row after his debut over this trip, including two PA Group races over further and fourth behind Lady Princess in the HH The Amir Sword over 1m4f. Only beaten a head in another Group 1PA over 1m2f in April and there should be more to come, however he may find this on the sharp side on debut for new trainer. (OR 117)

Race Summary Another vintage renewal with plenty of young horses looking to stamp their authority on the Arabian world stage. Lady Princess won easily on her return against other fillies and though this will be more competitive, her turn of foot is exceptional despite her size. First Classs has looked exactly that in his last two runs and though he’s a sprint winner, like Mwarid and Hattal, his best form is over slightly further and may find the trip too short, though the stiff track will help all three. Bayan Athbah and Djafar are proven at this distance on fast ground and are relatively unexposed in this company so may find more, however so is SAMLLA. He has already beaten older horses and is the very narrow pick to be the first four-year-old to win what looks to be a highly competitive race for the UK’s most valuable prize in Arabian racing.
Win: Samlla

SECRET STATE had shaped on his first three starts as though stepping up to 1m 4f would bring about further improvement and Charlie Appleby's colt fulfilled that promise by taking the King George V Handicap at Royal Ascot. Connections were talking post-race about potentially stepping up into Group company straight away, so the fact he turns up again in handicap company suggests there is still mileage in his rating. Soulcombe has to enter calculations on his hat-trick bid, while Maksud, Surrey Mist and Mandobi appeal most of the remainder.

Race Summary HEREDIA's unbeaten record came to an end at Sandown earlier this month but it's possible her exertions in the Sandringham two weeks prior had taken their toll. With that in mind, the daughter of Dark Angel might be able to bounce back and, in a wide-open contest, she receives a tentative vote. Fresh from a Listed success at Chelmsford, Soft Whisper must feature prominently in calculations, along with Primo Bacio, who drops in grade following a creditable effort in the Falmouth. Bounce The Blues, Oscula and Hello You shouldn't be underestimated either.
Win: HEREDIA
Danger: Soft Whisper

Race Summary WALBANK was arguably unlucky not to win the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot last month after stumbling early in the race and having used up plenty of energy up get back into contention, he did extremely well to finish runner-up in the circumstances and compensation may await here. The biggest danger looks to be Rocket Rodney, who was an impressive winner in Listed company at Sandown last time and has also won over C&D. Trillium is dropped to this trip for the first time and looks an exciting prospect.

Today ’s Feature t h e Q ata r s u s s e x s ta k e s
The Group 1 Qatar Sussex Stakes is the flagship race of the five-day Festival and has taken on even greater importance since our ground-breaking partnership with its title sponsor. One of Europe’s most valuable mile races for three-year-olds and upwards, the prize money stands at £1 million. It has become Goodwood’s race of champions, with a reputation of bringing together some of the most outstanding horses in training year on year. Inaugurated in 1841, it provided a stage to showcase the talents of King Edward VII’s Derby winner Minoru in the early years. In 1954, there was another Royal winner when Landau won sporting the colours of Her Majesty The Queen. The remarkable filly Petite Etoile, was an outstanding winner, as was the great Brigadier Gerard, who ran his four rivals ragged in 1971. Most of the best milers in recent years feature on the race’s distinguished role of honour: Kris (1979), Chief Singer (1984), Soviet Star (1987), Warning (1988), Zilzal (1989), Aljabr (1999), Giant’s Causeway (2000), Rock of Gibraltar (2002) and Canford Cliffs (2010). Then came Frankel, who went on to create a piece of Goodwood racing history by becoming the first horse to win the race twice before eventually retiring unbeaten in 14 races. Toronado, owned by His Excellency Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani, overturned the favourite Dawn Approach in a thrilling renewal of this Group 1 contest in 2013. Still, any chance of a similar upset occurring in 2014 never materialised with Kingman winning in untroubled fashion. In 2017 however, a surprise result did arise with seven-year-old Here Comes When fending off the challenge of hot favourite Ribchester before another seven-year-old, Lightning Spear followed up in 2018. Ridden by Oisin Murphy, the jockey has enjoyed much success in this race, winning it again last year aboard Alcohol Free for trainer Andrew Balding.

Race Summary The feature of the day appears to revolve around the unbeaten BAAEED, who brushed aside his rivals with consummate ease in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot last month. The son of Sea The Stars has been a relentless force this term, landing two Group 1s from as many outings, and he can bolster that record today. Last year's winner Alcohol Free arrives fresh from July Cup glory and warrants the utmost respect returning from her sprinting endeavours. Modern Games should appreciate the step back up in trip and may also give a good account.

Race Summary With several appealing prospects catching the eye, preference is for the relatively unexposed SEA SPEEDWELL. William Haggas' charge stepped up to record a promising second on her turf debut earlier this month, but Natasha has every chance of improving for her first run of the season at Newmarket recently. State Occasion is another to take seriously, along with Myristica, who is stepping up in class.
Win: SEA SPEEDWELL

Race Summary A case can be made for plenty of these but none more so than THE PLATINUM QUEEN, who created a big impression when readily accounting for a decent field over 5f at York earlier in the month. All The Time failed to make an impact in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot last time, but she was an easy winner on debut and can be given another chance today. Others to note are Beautiful Eyes, Star Of Lady M and Union Court.

STEWARDS NOTED: WILD LION:Following its run on 2/7/2022 it was reported that the horse hung badly right handed.
Race Summary A fiercely competitive handicap to round things off, in which narrow preference is for THE ATTORNEY. He drops back down in class following solid efforts in defeat at both Newcastle and Newmarket and his overall course form is encouraging, getting within a neck of victory over this track and trip three starts ago. Having William Buick aboard only enhances his claims further. Wild Lion and Amor Vincit Omnia are a couple of unexposed players to consider, while Mums Tipple also merits shortlist inclusion.
Win: THE ATTORNEY
