elcome to Goodwood Racecourse for the third day of the 2022 Qatar Goodwood Festival.

Racing begins today with the Markel Magnolia Cup, an all-female charity race run in aid of UK initiative, The Brilliant Breakfast for The Prince’s Trust. Twelve inspirational women will become jockeys for the day, wearing bespoke silks created by iconic British fashion designer, Roksanda Ilinčić. The women have been training relentlessly for months, and we wish them the very best of luck in the culmination of this enormous challenge. The highlight of the afternoon’s racing is the £600,000 Group 1 Qatar Nassau Stakes, for the world’s best fillies and mares. This race was inaugurated in 1840, and we look forward to seeing another great name added to its illustrious roll of honour. Aside from the thrilling racing action, it is well worth a visit to the Gusbourne Pavilion, which sits above the parade ring. Gusbourne, who are Goodwood Racecourse’s Official Partner, grow and produce award-winning vintage Sparkling Wine just three miles from the racecourse. It is the perfect way to celebrate everything that is fantastic about British produce while enjoying the summer sun and celebrating alongside friends and family. We thank our race sponsors Qatar, Coral, John Pearce Racing, Jaeger-Lecoultre, World Pool, Tatler and the European Breeders Fund for their generous support of racing today. I hope that you have a very enjoyable time here at Goodwood this afternoon.

The Duke of Richmond & Gordon 3

Glorious Goodwood

The first Duke of Richmond’s father, King Charles II loved horse racing and the Duke was famously conceived during a house party where everyone was staying for racing at Newmarket. ‘Match’ racing between two horses was a fashionable sport enjoyed by the early Dukes on the Harroway, the open stretch of land on the South Downs above Goodwood. In 1801, the third Duke of Richmond held a private race meeting for the Sussex Militia. The event was such a success that the following year he held Goodwood’s first public race meeting. The Goodwood meeting took place every summer from then on, becoming a firm fixture in the racing calendar. The fifth Duke of Richmond, influenced by his great friend Lord George Bentinck, threw resources into the racecourse, including major earthworks in 1829 to extend the racecourse to the foot of the Trundle. Innovations included the pre-race parade of horses and public saddling, designed to hinder the skulduggery that went on behind the scenes and with which the sport was rife. From those early days, ‘Glorious Goodwood’ – as the meeting was dubbed by the press – become part of the English social season. King Edward VII, who attended every year, famously dubbed the meeting ‘a garden party with racing tacked on’ and helped relax the dress-code from the more formal morning coats and top hats to straw hats and lounge suits. The Goodwood meeting became the final fling of the season before everyone departed for Cowes Regatta on the Isle of Wight or the Highlands of Scotland. For much of its early history, racing took place over three consecutive days (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), with Tuesday being added later. Under the late (tenth) Duke of Richmond, Saturday racing was introduced and the race programme enlarged from four to twenty days across the season. Today, Goodwood is rightly hailed as the most beautiful racecourse in the world and the place where many of the greatest racehorses have battled it out on the top of the South Downs.

Markel Magnolia Cup Charity Race a B r i e F h i s T o ry Now in its eleventh year, the very special Markel Magnolia Cup Charity Race will again be staged as the first race on Ladies’ Day. The race is named after the Magnolia grandiflora that grow up the front of Goodwood House, and were first introduced to Goodwood by the 2nd Duke of Richmond in the mid-eighteenth century. The beautifully-scented Magnolia flowers were the inspiration behind the perpetual silver cup, designed by famous London silversmiths, Garrard. Since its inception in 2011, the Magnolia Cup’s key objective has always been to raise as much money as possible for female-focused charities and, in doing so, help raise their profiles. Through a mixture of sponsorship, tickets sales from the Regency Ball, private donations, the race has raised over £1.8 million in the last nine years for some very worthy causes, including Great Ormond Street Hospital, Winston’s Wish, Wellbeing of Women and Smart Works. This year we are extremely proud to be supporting UK charity initiative The Brilliant Breakfast for The Prince’s Trust. The Brilliant Breakfast is a nationwide fundraising event run annually for a week in October. It brings together friends, family, and colleagues over breakfast to raise money for young women on The Prince’s Trust programmes across the UK. The money raised will help women aged between 11-30 who face disadvantage and adversity to build their own futures through employment, education, and training. Our brave amateur jockeys train tirelessly for months leading up to the race, undertaking everything from early morning racing sessions to intensive fitness programmes and jockey training classes. Each rider must pass the BHA assessment before being permitted to ride in today’s five-and-a-half-furlong race.

Roksanda Ilinčić Goodwood always selects a renowned female-led fashion brand to create a collection of bespoke silks for the jockeys riding in The Magnolia Cup. Past designers have included Morvarid Sahafi, Sarah Burton, Bella Freud, Mary Katranzou and Vivienne Westwood. This year’s stunning designs are by iconic fashion designer Roksanda Ilinčić, founder and designer of fashion label ROKSANDA, who is known for her bold colours, luxurious fabrics and clean, elegant lines. Roksanda has an ability to create clothes that offer a form of escapism whilst also managing to be relevant to real life, which makes her the perfect fit for this celebrated race, which was conceived over a decade ago to overcome the boundaries within sport and create an inclusive community in support of women, their ability, and well-being. The silks, which characterise Roksanda’s use of bold colour and print, have all been repurposed from her recent archive and will be worn proudly by all the jockeys today. Roksanda says; “It is such a pleasure to design this year’s jockey silks for the Markel Magnolia Cup, in aid of The Brilliant Breakfast, a charitable initiative that is set up by women and to support women speaks very dearly to me. I wanted to reimagine some of my favourite prints, creating something special to champion these incredible women who bring such resilience and dedication to the course at Goodwood.”

With a fast pace likely from the off, those with suspect stamina may come unstuck, but that shouldn't bother Migdam, who ran on well to score over this trip at Doncaster on his first start of the season. He could go close here, but the Johnston stable have a great record in this race and WHITEFEATHERSFALL should go well on his second start of the season off an attractive mark. Asaassi, Warren Point and Vee Sight are others to consider.

Race Summary ROYAL SCOTSMAN was a most impressive winner over C&D in May and then backed that up with a good third in the Coventry at Royal Ascot. With the form of that Ascot race working out well, he may take some beating here. Another whose form has been working out well is the Andrew Balding-trained Chateau, who looked to improve for the step up to 6f last time and rates a big threat. Al Karrar was impressive on debut and is open to any amount of improvement.

The John Pearce Racing Gordon Stakes John Pearce Racing is delighted to sponsor the 110th renewal of the Gordon Stakes. Born just after World War 1, John Pearce was schooled in England before returning to Hong Kong to join his family business, Hutchison International. Mr Pearce used his success in business to pursue a passion for breeding and racing thoroughbreds. During almost 80 years of racehorse ownership, he had a particularly successful partnership with the trainer, Geoff Wragg. Together they won the Ascot Gold Cup with Arcadian Heights (1994), before coming a close second in the Derby with Dragon Dancer (2006). Mr Pearce was a long-time fan of, and regular visitor to, ‘Glorious Goodwood’. The sponsorship of the Gordon Stakes complements Mr Pearce’s middle-distance breeding ambitions and continues a long-standing family racing association. The trophy design mirrors that of the Pearce Memorial Cup, one of the oldest races in Hong Kong, run in memory of Mr Pearce’s father, ‘Tam’. On Mr Pearce’s passing in 2017, his legacy established John Pearce Racing to continue his breeding and racing activities. It also created the John Pearce Foundation, a UK registered charity that supports racing related charities and other good causes. For more information on both endeavours, please visit www.JohnPearce.org

STEWARDS NOTED: MASEKELA:Following its run on 7/7/2022 it was reported that the trainer could not explain the poor run.

Race Summary Having belied odds of 150-1 to finish second in this year's Derby, HOO YA MAL could take all the beating down in grade on his first start for George Boughey. The Classic-winning trainer opts for a first-time tongue-tie, which could bring about further improvement as the son of Territories seeks to add a first Group success to his CV. New London is likely to go well following his win in a Newmarket handicap along with West Wind Blows, who routed the opposition in Listed company at Hamilton earlier this month.

Today ’s Feature T h e Q aTa r N a s s a u s Ta k e s

Inaugurated in 1840, the Qatar Nassau Stakes celebrates the friendship formed between the fifth Duke of Richmond and the Dutch Royal family, the House of Orange and Nassau. A Group 1 event with a prize fund of £600,000, is the most significant mid-summer race of the year for fillies and mares. Run over a distance just short of ten furlongs, it was originally restricted to three-year-olds but was opened up to older horses in 1975 and continues to be targeted by leading owners and trainers. The brilliance of dual Classic race winners Thebais and La Fleche helped put the Nassau Stakes on the map in the latter half of the 19th century, after which it continued to grow in popularity and importance. Supreme champion fillies, Sceptre and Pretty Polly, enhanced the race’s burgeoning reputation still further in the early 20th century. Sceptre was surprisingly beaten in the Sussex Stakes, but bounced back later in the week to claim victory in the 1902 renewal of the Nassau Stakes. However, it was legendary jockey Lester Piggott, with a haul of five winners, and Newmarket trainers, Sir Noel Murless, Sir Michael Stoute, and Sir Henry Cecil that really made history; they would dominate the race post-war. Sir Henry’s record eight winners include the wonderful filly Midday, who carved herself a slice of racing history by becoming the first horse to win the race three times in consecutive years from 2009. 2017 saw British and Irish Champion Trainer Aidan O’Brien take backto-back victories in the race as Winter ran out a comfortable winner under the expert guidance of Ryan Moore, following Minding’s success in 2016. Global powerhouse Godolphin registered a second success in the Nassau Stakes in 2018, with Oaks runner-up Wild Illusion before the 2019 and 2021 races made for historical feats. Dierdre completed a memorable win for her Japanese connections in 2019, securing a first Group 1 winner for the East Asian country on UK soil in over a decade under an astute ride from Oisin Murphy, while 2021 saw perhaps one of the most emotional successes of all time in the contest. Lady Bowthorpe challenged wide up the home straight to land the prestigious contest, ending trainer William Jarvis’ Group 1 drought after 27 years for music agent owner, Emma Banks. Race Summary Arriving off the back of a Group 1 win in France, NASHWA could prove tough to beat if anywhere near her best. She recorded a good third behind Tuesday in the Cazoo Oaks in June and seeks to extend her unbeaten record at this distance. Lilac Road has been highly progressive recently, culminating in Group 2 success at York in May, and is likely to have a say in proceedings. Connections of Concert Hall now reach for cheekpieces in the hope that it will bring about further improvement and she completes the shortlist.

Race Summary True Statesman arrives in search of a hat-trick of victories having won impressively on his latest start at Chester and he remains capable of further progression, despite an 8lb rise for that success. The vote, however, goes to SEDUCTIVE POWER, who took a step forward when shedding his maiden tag at Newbury on his third outing and the extra furlong on this occasion is likely to see him improve again. Far Shot (second) and Dayyan (third) were closely matched at Ascot last time and the pair are likely to enter calculations.

Race Summary The class-dropping GET AHEAD shades the vote having not been disgraced in a hot handicap at Ascot and Listed contests prior to that. She was only two lengths behind Mitbaahy at Sandown on her penultimate outing and that rival has since gone close in a Group 3. Swayze seems an obvious danger having won over this distance at Haydock last time, albeit on soft ground, while Sir Henry Cotton could also get involved.

Race Summary DAYDREAM DANCER's value rose significantly to 170,000 euros, having cost 70,000gns as a foal, suggesting the daughter of Oasis Dream could possess a fair level of ability. She is related to plenty of smart winners and, in a wide-open affair, receives the tentative vote. Ninth in the Albany last month, She's Hot would hold every chance with a replication of that effort. Andrew Balding sent out Wilderness Girl to victory in this contest 12 months ago and he would appear to boast solid credentials with Winnaretta.
