SAINTS & SINNERS RACENIGHT THURSDAY 24 JUNE 2021

WELCOME Welcome to Saints & Sinners Racenight. As one of our best known and usually very well supported, it’s wonderful to have tonight’s meeting going ahead with racegoers in attendance, especially the members of the Saints & Sinners charity and their guests. For so long we all were waiting to see if crowds were allowed to return and, as I have said at previous meetings, with the great help from South Lanarkshire Council, we have devised operating procedures which have allowed you all to be here safely tonight. I’d like to thank you for helping us put on a safe race meeting by buying your tickets in advance, keeping socially distant when you are here, and wearing face coverings when you are inside. It’s been a long time coming, but it does now feel like we are heading in the right direction to come through this horrific pandemic. Tonight I also welcome our evening’s sponsors, Indigo Unified Comms, and thank them for their support of the occasion. Also, our thanks go to Patersons of Greenoakhill and PDM Buildbase Scotland for sponsoring tonight’s racing. It’s really super to welcome you all back and I hope you all have a wonderful night with us. Our card this evening opens with the customary amateurs’ race, the plan.com Saints & Sinners Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap at 6pm. I always enjoy watching these jockeys at this stage of their careers, and then reflecting back a year later to see what they have gone on to achieve. We also have a selling race at 7pm tonight and so if you fancy becoming an owner of a new horse, remember to make your way to the Winners’ Enclosure after the race where Jim Delahunt will be looking after the bidding from anyone who fancies the winner. Our feature race tonight is the Captain JC Stewart Fillies’ Handicap where the very successful duo of Joe Fanning riding for Mark Johnston take on five others vying for the spoils. David O’Meara’s Celtic Empress has become a regular here at Hamilton Park lately and will be wanting a repeat of her win on 26 May. As it’s Saints & Sinners night, we will have red and white carnations for sale to raise money for the Saints & Sinners charity. Please buy one and feel free to make an extra donation if you can. Hamilton Park will also be giving a percentage from the gate receipts to help their fund raising and of course, as the crowd is not able to be its usual size, every pound donated will be appreciated even more than usual. Have a great evening, whether you are sinning or being saintly! Kind regards, VIVIEN CURRIE MBE, CHIEF EXECUTIVE

Welcome Good evening and welcome to the annual Saints & Sinners Club of Scotland race meeting. After a very difficult fifteen months for everyone, it is great to be back here at Hamilton Park. The Club raises funds to distribute annually to small Scottish charities and the yearly grant from the Club is the difference that enable many to carry on their work. The loss of the race meeting and our other events last year was a significant blow to our fundraising, however, our reserves enabled us to support 147 charities, with over £130,000 issued in grants. Being back here tonight and your contribution to our fundraising will be a terrific help in our desire to maintain that level of giving, even in these challenging times. I hope you have a great night, back a few winners and on behalf of the whole Club, I’d like to thank you for coming this evening and supporting our efforts; it is much appreciated.

THE PLAN.COM SAINTS & SINNERS AMATEUR JOCKEYS’ HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 5) (FOR THE SAINTS & SINNERS CHALLENGE CUP) RACE DESCRIPTION

Our opener this evening is a one mile and five furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70, all ridden by amateur jockeys. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

THE BOOK OUR ONSITE HOTEL EBF RESTRICTED MAIDEN STAKES (CLASS 4) (FOR HORSES IN BAND D) (A HAMILTON PARK 2YO SERIES QUALIFIER) RACE DESCRIPTION

The second race tonight is a six-furlong maiden stakes for two-year-olds which are EBF eligible. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

THE INDIGO UNIFIED COMMS SELLING HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 6) RACE DESCRIPTION

Selling Stakes exist as an outlet for connections to sell their horses. Any horse that wins a seller, such as this fivefurlong handicap contest for three-year-olds and upwards, is automatically put up for public auction in the Winners’ Enclosure at the end of the race and goes to the highest bidder, so make sure to head that way after the race as the auction is usually well worth seeing.

ONE MILE, ONE FURLONG about 35 YARDS (9f abt 35yds) (1800m)

Fourth Race

7.30 p.m. THE PDM BUILDBASE SCOTLAND MAIDEN STAKES (CLASS 5)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This one mile and one furlong contest for three-year-olds and upwards is another maiden stakes - a race for horses that have yet to record a racecourse victory. There are a variety of reasons why the older horses in this race could still be maidens. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career.

RACE STATISTICS

Leading course trainer (16-21): K Dalgleish (55 wins from 441 runners, 12%) runs PLATINUMCARD and TRISTAN DA CUNHA Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): M Johnston (15 wins from 101 runners, 15%) runs ALFAYAATH and GREEN BELIEVER Longest Traveller: JEBEL DUKHAN trained by Sir M Prescott, Newmarket, 360 miles.

More severe headgear is reached for and Sir Mark Prescott’s colt is worth another chance upped in trip. THE CAPTAIN J C STEWART FILLIES’ HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 4) RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-old and upwards fillies and mares which have been rated from 61 to 80. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a filly rated 80 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 75.

Sixth Race

8.30 p.m.

THE PATERSONS OF GREENOAKHILL HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 4) RACE DESCRIPTION

Our penultimate contest tonight is a five-furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 5 or 6lb depending on the race conditions.

Seventh Race

9.00 p.m. THE HAMILTON-PARK.CO.UK HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 6) RACE DESCRIPTION

The final race on tonight’s card is a six-furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
