INTRODUCTION

One of the enduring attractions of horseracing is that it truly is a global sport, enjoyed the world over by millions of people from all walks of life.

Not only are racing fans in the 21st Century able to celebrate our equine and human superstars at their local racecourses, they are also able to watch the very best that our sport has to offer around the world on television and a variety of streaming platforms.

At The Jockey Club, few things give our teams a greater thrill than hosting international runners or seeing horses who have appeared at our racecourses and been trained on our gallops go on to make a name for themselves on some of the biggest stages in other jurisdictions.

Since it was founded in 1750, The Jockey Club has had the racehorse at its heart. While it was formally established and headquartered in London, Newmarket emerged as the pre-eminent venue for horseracing in Great Britain under the dynasty of the House of Stuart. In 1752 The Jockey Club leased a plot of land and built a coffee house in the Suffolk town, a building which still exists today and has been beautifully restored and maintained as part of The Jockey Club Rooms on Newmarket High Street.

Formed initially by a group of racing enthusiasts to ensure that the rapidly growing sport of horseracing could remain independent and self-governing, for the first 240 years of its history The Jockey Club oversaw racing’s growth to become an integral part of the fabric of British sporting and national life.

Over the last three decades, the focus of The Jockey Club changed to transition from its role as racing’s governing body in the UK to begin its journey to become one of the largest commercial organisations in the sport.

Governed by Royal Charter to ensure all profits are reinvested back into racing, The Jockey Club has evolved to become one of the leading racecourse ownership groups globally, among other activities including training grounds management, education and breeding. The Jockey Club’s Patrons are HM King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

In 2025 The Jockey Club operates 15 racecourses staging around a third of the UK’s Flat Pattern and Listed Races, 14 of the 36 Group 1s and four of the five Classics. Prize money for 2025 across our 319 fixtures totals close to £60 million.

Many of racing’s most historic and prestigious prizes are staged at the likes of Epsom Downs, Newmarket’s two racecourses – The Rowley Mile and The July Course – Sandown Park and Haydock Park, while courses such as

Kempton Park, Nottingham and Carlisle stage competitive Flat racing and provide the starting point for many of the sport’s biggest equine stars.

For most of its existence, international competition has been at very heart of what The Jockey Club is about. From the days of the “Avenger of Waterloo” Gladiateur, the French-trained Triple Crown winner of 1865, through to the Irish-trained City Of Troy, successful in the 2024 Betfred Derby and CoralEclipse who went on to be named Cartier Horse of the Year in Europe, overseas-trained runners have frequently been successful in the very best races staged at Jockey Club racecourses.

While the majority of overseas-trained winners of major races hail from Ireland or France, there have been successes from further afield. Most notably, Agnes World became the first ever Japanese-trained horse to win a race in Great Britain when recording a memorable success in the Group 1 July Cup at Newmarket 25 years ago.

Wherever you choose to run with us, you can be guaranteed a fantastic welcome and an unforgettable owners’ and trainers’ experience, supported by our colleagues at the International Racing Bureau and Great British Racing International.

The Jockey Club’s approach to racing is defined by our sustained reinvestment, both into prize money and facilities. This ensures the heritage and history of the crown jewels that we steward are given the best possible platform to survive and thrive for centuries to come.

That approach extends to our historic training grounds in Newmarket, Epsom and Lambourn and to The National Stud and Racing Welfare, our charity to support those who work in all aspects of racing.

British racing has had a significant influence over the evolution and development of the thoroughbred, and it remains our priority at The Jockey Club to ensure we continue to provide the best possible platform for these magnificent animals to thrive.

We hope you will consider the information in the brochure useful, and should you have any further queries please contact a member of our International team via the details provided.

TESTING & INFLUENZA

TESTING

In order for the BHA to conduct post-arrival testing of horses shipping to race as temporary imports (from outside Great Britain, France, Germany, Ireland, Hong Kong, Japan, Sweden and Norway), horses should arrive in Great Britain a minimum of ten business days prior to race day. Trainers must submit a ‘Whereabouts Form’ a minimum of 14 business days before the first race in which the horse is entered or intended to be entered. The information must remain up to date and accurate or it may result in a filing failure or missed test. Where a horse is not going to be in Great Britain for a minimum of ten business days prior to race day the trainer should contact the BHA at least 30 days prior to the intended first race to discuss the possibility of pre-departure testing. A horse will not be permitted to declare to race in Great Britain until the sample has been reported as negative.

EQUINE INFLUENZA

Trainers are reminded of the requirement for Equine Influenza vaccination. The rules can be found on the BHA’s rules website –Vaccinations Code – which notes the requirement for six-monthly booster vaccinations. A copy of the passport, or vaccination record, for ALL international runners must be emailed to equine@ britishhorseracing.com prior to close of entry.

The BHA Equine department is available to help with any questions on medication, race day restrictions and equipment

STABLING AND TRAINING FACILITIES

There are no training facilities for international runners, at Jockey Club Racecourses. Horses from abroad must be trained away from the tracks. The International Racing Bureau (IRB) will be available to assist you with stabling options including in Newmarket, Lambourn or elsewhere. They will also help with the provision of lead ponies and will advise on the best veterinary and farrier care.

NEWMARKET

The home of UK horse racing is the most popular choice for visiting trainers. Access to the many and varied gallops in Newmarket is straightforward and the IRB are on hand to show your staff the range of facilities. The gallops cover an area of approximately 2,500 acres (1,000ha) and provide 50 miles (80kms) of turf gallops and canters as well as 15 artificial tracks totalling 13 miles (21km). The gallops are owned by Jockey Club Estates and managed by Nick Patton.

LAMBOURN

Set on the Berkshire Downs with its varied gradients and centuries old downland turf, Lambourn is known as “The Valley of the Racehorse”. Jockey Club Estates also own and manage Lambourn gallops which include 600 acres of training grounds, 8 miles (12kms) of turf gallops and 7 miles (11kms) of artificial tracks.
