REMEMBERING NIGEL ELWES
Nigel Elwes, a highly-respected and much-loved member of the Kempton Park committee who also served on the Sandown Park committee, recently passed away at the age of 80. Having retired from a successful career in the City of London at 50, Nigel and his wife Carolyn set up a breeding operation at Aylesfield Farms Stud in Dorset and had many good horses run in their colours, notably Listed winners First Fantasy, Green Room, Santa Sophia and Wandering Star and Group 3 winner Simona. In 2008 Nigel was awarded a CBE in The Queen’s birthday honours for his services to the horseracing industry, which included being a Chairman of The British Racing School, Racing Welfare and the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association. He was also a Director of the BHB (now BHA) and a trustee of the British EBF. Phil White, The Jockey Club's London Regional Director, said: "We are all incredibly saddened to hear of Nigel's passing. He was a kind, caring and considerate man who had time for everyone at the racecourse, regardless of their role or how busy he was. "I know that everyone at Kempton Park, Sandown Park and Racing Welfare benefited hugely from his immense racing knowledge and his unique and carefully considered perspective on so many topics. "Nigel will be remembered fondly as someone whose passion and dedication to our sport shone through at all times but mostly as one of the nicest people you could wish to meet. "Our thoughts go to his family and friends and all those who will miss seeing him on a racecourse." Nigel is survived by his wife Carolyn and children Serena, Andrew and Melisa.

The six-year-old jumped soundly throughout the contest and always looked to be travelling the best of the 7-strong field. Despite facing a late challenge by Colin Tizzard’s in-mate, he stayed on strongly all the way to the line to win impressively by three-and-three-quater-lengths. Albeit not winning since this victory, he has numerous seconds to his name and was 20-lengths ahead in the Charlie Hall at Wetherby before taking a nasty fall 3 out.

Arguably one of the most exciting Novices’ around. Paul Nicholls and connections will be hoping he can continue his progress here, and maintain a perfect record over fences on his march to the Cheltenham Festival.
HHHHH AHOY SENOR Lucinda Russell’s charge is the new kid on the block and after beating the very well-supported Mr Incredible in some style at Newbury last time out, he should be closely watched again in a small field. Already got the measure of the favourite over hurdles too.
HHHH TEA CLIPPER
KILTEALY BRIGGS
Winner of the Silver Trophy at Chepstow over hurdles, Tom Lacey’s in-mate will need to improve on his latest outing at Newbury when his jumping let him down. He will certainly make a bold bid to get competitive, but can he get his head in front of the ‘big two’?
This 7-year-old got off the mark at the seventh time of asking over the larger obstacles and, despite this being his hardest contest to date, he can put his experience togood use.

KING GEORGE VI CHASE WINNER (TWICE) & CHELTENHAM GOLD CUP WINNER
LEADING TRAINER NICKY HENDERSON 5 WINNERS
REMEMBERING KAUTO'S FIFTH
On this day ten years ago, the remarkable Kauto Star made history by winning his fifth King George VI Chase, a feat unmatched by any other horse. By Boxing Day 2011 Kauto Star had already cemented himself as one of the all-time greats of Jump racing, having won two Cheltenham Gold Cups, four Betfair Chases and two Tingle Creeks alongside his previous four victories at Kempton. Yet despite his legendary status and popularity, many had dismissed his chances that year, believing him to be past his best. Dismissing Kauto Star was never wise though, for this was a horse who had regained his Cheltenham Gold Cup crown in 2009, having lost it to stable mate Denman the year before. He had also won the Betfair Chase over three miles, dropped back to two miles to win the Tingle Creek before stepping back up in distance to win the King George during a six-week period in 2006. Nonetheless, he arrived at Kempton Park in December 2011 as second favourite to Long Run, a horse five years his junior who had defeated him the previous year. As the race evolved, any doubts over Kauto Star's age evaporated, as his impeccable jumping took him to the front with a circuit to go. The cheers of sheer joy began as he galloped powerfully around the home turn well in command, and only got louder and louder as he met each of the three fences in the home straight perfectly. Long Run duly battled back, but Kauto Star sealed his place among legends with a length and a quarter to spare. It was written by Racing Post journalist Alistair Down that "even those who had helped lever Long Run into short-priced favouritism must have given up the unequal struggle and surrendered to the magnificence of the sight in front of them and added their voices to the uproar." He returned to a hero's welcome in the winner's enclosure and those present will never forget the feeling of being at Kempton Park that day. Kauto Star and his incredible achievements have been commemorated here with a statue in the centre of the Parade Ring.

Up against the 2019 winner and heavy oddson favourite, Epatante, it looked a tough task for Silver Streak to reverse the previous form, having failied to do so in both the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, and in this race in 2019 where he finished 5 lengths adrift in second. Despite still having to give 7lb to Nicky Henderson’s talented mare, Adam Wedge made his mind up early, and under a confident ride from the front, Silver Streak pinged the last to make all. This gave both jockey and trainer their first victories in this contest. Being sent off at 1/5F on the day, Epatante will go down in the history books for both the right and wrong reasons.
The judge couldn’t separate EPATANTE and NOT SO SLEEPY at Newcastle. Could either take a step forward this time around, or will TRITONIC spoil the party?

A five-time Grade 1 winner (including an AQPS race in France), Epatante was at her best when winning the Champion Hurdle in 2020. A beaten favourite in this race last year, she has a fine chance to add another Grade 1 to her CV today.
HHHHH
NOT SO SLEEPY Hughie Morrison’s enigmatic front runner has graduated from handicaps and proven himself to be a Graded horses. His finest hour came last time out at Newcastle when dead heating with Epatante and if handling the ground he can be involved in the finish.
HHHH TRITONIC
A talented four-year-old, Tritonic was a promising juvenile under both codes and landed a competitive handicap hurdle at Ascot last time out. Turned out quickly, he looks in fine form and would be dangerous to underestimate.

WE WISH DAVID ELSWORTH A HAPPY RETIREMENT It seems hard to believe that the name of trainer David Elsworth will no longer appear on racecards after he announced his retirement on December 15th at the age of 82. Born in Devizes, Wiltshire, Elsworth spent a 15-year career as a journeyman jockey between 1957 and 1972 which yielded 15 winners. A year before his retirement from the saddle he had also assumed the position of assistant trainer to Ricky Vallance and played a significant role in the handling of 1972 Hennessy Gold Cup victor Red Candle. By 1978 he was training in his own name and it didn’t take long for him to make an impact with Heighlin causing a 40-1 upset in the 1980 Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. The years which followed saw more success and the King George VI Chase almost went his way in both 1984 and 1985, with Combs Ditch the narrow runner-up in both renewals. Combs Ditch attempted to make it third time lucky in 1986 when he was joined by his stablemate Desert Orchid in the race. The latter was owned by the Burridge family. The son of Grey Mirage had been with Elsworth since day one and made an inauspicious 50-1 debut when falling at the last in a novices’ hurdle back in January 1983 - at Kempton Park of all places. However, he developed into a very smart hurdler and then chaser over the next few seasons under Elsworth’s expert guidance and was a 16-1 chance in the 1986 King George VI Chase. Running from the front and jumping boldly, ‘Dessie’ came home 15 lengths clear to begin a Christmas tradition. He won the King George again in 1988, 1989 and 1990 and became as much part of the Christmas ritual as mistletoe and holly – the only change seemed to be he lightened in shade each year, eventually reaching a spectacular snow white. Big-race Boxing Day success at Kempton Park also went Elsworth’s way in the Christmas Hurdle with Muse (1993) and Absalom's Lady (1994), while he took what is now the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase with Sir Blake (1988). And when Rhyme ‘N’ Reason won the Grand National winner in 1988, it was only after running out as an impressive winner earlier in the campaign of the Racing Post Chase at Kempton Park. Equally skilled with his handling of Flat horses, Elsworth saddled seven Group One winners as sprinters and stayers came alike to him. His emergence in the 1980s saw him become the natural successor to his great inspiration, Captain Ryan Price, to become the outstanding dual-purpose trainer of his or indeed any generation. By his own admission he has not always been an easy man to deal with and his honestly-held opinions have often sparked division in racing. Yet he is also warm, kind, humorous and a man who inspires great loyalty – a true one-off. Kempton Park has fond memories of David Elsworth the trainer and everyone at the racecourse looks forward to hopefully welcoming him back as our guest in the future. The pleasure will be all ours. Happy retirement ‘Elsie’!

KING GEORGE VI CHASE BIG RACE TRENDS AGE
With horses aged seven or eight having landed seven of the last ten renewals, these seem the group to focus on. In this year’s field they have five of the nine representatives. Only the great pair of Kauto Star and Cue Card have defied this trend when older, so it does look best to side with that age group a negative for the market leader Clan Des Obeaux and last years’ winner Frodon.
KEY RACES
The Betfair Chase, run at Haydock at the end of November has been the stand-out trial for this race in recent years. Six of the last ten winners of the race had run in Haydock’s three-mile Grade 1 contest and the race is well-represented again in 2021. However, none if this year’s runners took that path this year and this looks a very open race yet again.
TRAINER TRENDS
Paul Nicholls has a strong record in the King George VI Chase in recent years, winning six of the last ten renewals, including the magnificent Kauto Star and superb Silviniaco Conti. See More Business also won the race in 1997 and 1999, before Clan des Obeaux became another dual winner with his successes in 2018/2019- giving the trainer a record total of twelfth wins overall. He has Clan des Obeaux, Frodon and Saint Calvados in the line-up on Boxing Day, in a bid to add to his impressive tally. There have only been three winning trainers of the King George in the last ten years as Nicky Henderson has won the race three times and Colin Tizzard has two successes to his name in the past decade. However, it looks like Nicky Henderson has the strongest hand of the two today as Chantry House won in style at Sandown last month.
FORM & CLASS
When trying to narrow down the shortlist in Grade 1 events, it often pays to side with proven quality and this race is no different with all but two of the last ten winners having previously been successful at Grade 1 level over fences. Saint Calvados, Tornado Flyer and Mister Fisher will be bidding for that breakthrough success at the highest level in the King George. Recent form is also an important factor to consider because whilst only four of the last ten winners won on their most recent start, only two had finished outside of the first three which was Clan des Obeaux ahead of his first success here in 2018, and last year’s winner Frodon. This shows that it can be difficult to bounce back from a below-par effort to win the King George, which is a negative against the chances of Asterion Forlonge, Saint Calvados and Tornado Flyer. Proven stamina over 3m or further is something that most of the last 15 winners have had on their resumé. Whilst our chase course may have a reputation as a speed course, horses still need to have the required stamina so beware of any doubtful stayers in this year’s field - perhaps Saint Calvados and Asterion Forlonge have the most question marks against their names in this regard.

BETTING
It usually pays to stick with the fancied runners in the King George VI Chase with eight of the last ten winners having come from the first two in the betting.Four of those were sent off as favourite, which is good news for supporters of the Paul Nicholl’s yard, as Clan des Obeaux currently heads the market. They are followed in the betting by Irish-raider Minella Indo and Nicky Henderson’s Chantry House.
CONCLUSION
With all things considered, CLAN DES OBEAUX looks to hold huge claims of making it a third win in the Ladbrokes King George VI Chase. He was a wide-margin twenty-one length winner of the Grade 1 in 2019 and as an nine-year-old this time around he still has plenty more to offer, albeit not fitting the age trend. MINELLA INDO may have needed the run in the Ladbrokes Champion Chase at Down Royal when making his seasonal debut. This year’s Gold Cup winner at the Cheltenham Festival should now be primed for this and is the main danger of stopping Paul Nicholl’s force. FRODON is always hard to rule out around here, as he likes to fly over his fences at speed and another bold front-running display could be on the cards. He actually won the Ladbrokes Champion Chase in some style, so like many other Paul Nicholl’s winners in this race, he could double up and make it back-to-back successes in this classy race.

Health And Safety Notice
Racehorse & Jockey Welfare
The Racecourse would be grateful if racegoers would observe all Health and Safety requirements whilst at Kempton Park Racecourse. The Emergency Exits from the Bars onto the Grandstand steppings are painted yellow and we would appreciate it if Racegoers would not stop in this area. We would also be grateful if only those that are Disabled use the Disabled Viewing Ramp and that Parents keep a close eye on children and prevent them from climbing on the running rails and getting onto the actual racecourse. We would also like to remind racegoers that the FIRST AID room is located opposite the Kauto Star Bar. Public access is prohibited to the Centre Course.
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials are here to ensure that the racecourse delivers those standards. In addition Kempton Park Racecourse employs two veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
Prize Money The Horserace Betting Levy Board General Prize Fund scheme provide for the inclusion of £1,031,800 at this Racecourse in 2020.
In-Running Betting Please note that in-running betting is not allowed in any public areas of Kempton Park Racecourse. Any racegoer found to be in breach of this rule will be removed from the racecourse. For the full terms and conditions of entry, please visit the racecourse website: kempton.co.uk

Emergency Evacuation Kempton Park Racecourse has significantly enhanced Safety and Security measures this year to enhance your safety, comfort and enjoyment of the day. However, an incident may occur which is beyond our control and it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency. As part of our safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced stewards and you will see them at various points throughout the racecourse. In the event of a situation, which requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your immediate belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards. The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area. Should it be necessary to evacuate the course itself, there will be two main options; firstly to return to your vehicles if safe to do so and leave via the main entrance. Secondly should it not be safe to return to your vehicles, you will be requested to leave via an emergency evacuation gate, to the main assembly points; the North Entrance, the South Entrance or the Holly Tree Gate. If these areas are compromised the evacuation will be directed to the centre of the course, where you will receive further instruction. It may give you peace of mind if you pre plan and agree a meeting place, just in case you become separated from your party. The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, in the event of an emergency, remember; take your belongings with you under the directions of the stewards, proceed quickly and calmly to the safe area.
