SATURDAY 28 NOVEMBER
Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to the Ladbrokes Winter Carnival, which is our fourth year sponsoring this top class jump racing event. I am extremely proud that Ladbrokes is now associated with Newbury Racecourse’s biggest weekend of Jump racing, and I can’t wait to see the action unfold with 14 races spread over the two days. The Ladbrokes Trophy on Saturday is the feature race of the meeting and has a roll of honour to die for with Arkle, Mill House and Denman just a few of the greats to win the race. This year’s Ladbrokes Trophy promises to be another high class and competitive renewal. Horse racing is an integral part of the Ladbrokes business DNA and we are passionate about maintaining our support for the sport. We are committed to working in partnership with Newbury Racecourse to grow this event into one of the most compelling and enjoyable attractions in the Jump racing calendar. I hope you enjoy the top class racing and wish you the very best of luck if you are having a bet. Simon Clare Ladbrokes Coral PR Director

RACE 2
Race Summary: The talented NEXT DESTINATION made a cracking start for Paul Nicholls when runner-up in a Grade 2 hurdle at Wetherby and, with the promise of more to come switched to chasing, he boasts excellent claims despite being rather thrown in at the deep end. Kalooki is an obvious danger on the back of his ready success at this course earlier in the month.
JOHN FRANCOME’S FAMOUS FIVE John Francome is universally acknowledged as one of Britain’s greatest jump jockeys. The seven times champion won the Hennessy Gold Cup, now the Ladbrokes Trophy, two years running on Brown Chamberlin and Burrough Hill Lad in 1983 and 1984. Francome’s achievements are recognised with the running of the Ladbrokes John Francome Novices’ Chase at Newbury. Here he lists his five favourite winners of the Ladbrokes Trophy.
1. BURROUGH HILL LAD (1984) He carried 12st and he was a really good horse, like Denman. He went on to win a Cheltenham Gold Cup. He won very easily despite having started off his career being a very ordinary jumper. He won a Welsh National, carrying 10st 9lb, when he must have been the biggest certainty there’s ever been. He was trained by the excellent Jenny Pitman, who knew her horses inside out.
2. DENMAN (2007) Other than being a different colour Denman and Burrough Hill Lad were like two peas from the same pod. Denman was called ‘The Tank’. Burrough Hill Lad would have given him a run for his money in a tug of war any day of the week. In 2007 Denman did the same as Burrough Hill Lad. He was a big, dominating, strong, relentless galloper. It’s what they do on the day and what they do subsequently that impresses.
3. SUNY BAY (1997) The Ladbrokes Trophy is an extraordinary race for throwing up good horses. When Suny Bay won it in 1997 he should have fallen at the fourth fence. How Graham Bradley stayed on board, I don’t know. He looked down, a faller, and suddenly he found a foot from somewhere and still won. It was an amazing performance by the horse and the jockey. He again carried a lot of weight. He went on to finish second in the Grand National under 12st.
4. CHARLIE POTHEEN (1972) He was the earliest winner of this race I can remember. Richard Pitman, who was Fred Winter’s first jockey, rode him. He was trained by Fulke Walwyn, who was the enemy over the wall if you like. This horse jumped really badly left-handed for three and a quarter miles. Instead of letting him stay up against the rail, Richard kept pulling him back to the middle of the fence and then he rode all the way across. They would take up ten yards by running left and jumping left at every single fence. He obviously had a lot of ability. Roman Holiday, ridden by Jeff King, a jockey who still today is the best I’ve seen, was second. He couldn’t get past Charlie Potheen, not round him or up his inside. Jeff went mad when he got back in the weighing room.
5. BOBS WORTH (2012) It was a toss-up between him and Native River but I’ve gone for Bobs Worth because I shouldn’t think there has ever been a better horse to have owned. He was bought for very little off Barry Geraghty. He won the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle, the RSA Chase and the Gold Cup at Cheltenham. And in between he won the Hennessy. He was an extraordinary horse, not very big, a complete opposite to Burrough Hill Lad, Dennan, Suny Bay and Charlie Potheen. There wasn’t much of him but he had a big heart. He was a battler.
THE SIR PETER O’SULLEVAN MEMORIAL HANDICAP CHASE This meeting in 1997 was Peter’s very last TV commentary and on the same day his famous colours were carried to victory in this very race, by Sounds Fyne ridden by Mick Fitzgerald. The owner of the winner of today’s race will hold a perpetual trophy for one year. The trophy is a silver coated bronze facsimile of Peter’s famous binoculars. The Ladbrokes Committed To Safer Gambling Intermediate Hurdle Race (A Limited Handicap) (Registered as the Gerry Feilden Hurdle) (Listed Race)
GENERAL SIR RANDLE FEILDEN, always known to his friends as Gerry, is remembered as the outstanding racing administrator of the 30 years following the end of the Second World War. Newbury was his local meeting as his home was at Minster Lovell, in the neighbouring county of Oxfordshire. He was senior Steward of the Jockey Club in 1952 and again in 1961, then from 1965 until 1973. An approachable and progressive man, he set himself the task of improving racing for the benefit of all concerned. Among the reforms and innovations introduced during his terms of office as Senior Steward were starting stalls, the camera patrol, systematic dope testing, overnight declaration of blinkers and centralised handicapping. He gave further voluntary service to racing as Chairman of the Stable Lads Welfare Trust for six years, and instigated an examination of the pay and conditions of service of stable staff. General Sir Randle Feilden was chairman of Newbury Racecourse, and a Director of several other public companies, including the Morland Brewery which sponsored the Morland Brewery Handicap for the first time at Newbury’s inaugural July meeting in 1963. General Feilden died in October 1981. 33

The History Of The Ladbrokes Trophy
The Ladbrokes Trophy was first run at Cheltenham in 1957 but was moved to Newbury after three years where it has forged a reputation as one of the most prestigious races in jumps racing. It has earned its place through the achievements of a glittering roll call of former winners, headed by Arkle, who represent many of the best chasers to have graced the sport. Mill House, Bregawn, Burrough Hill Lad, One Man, Denman, Bobs Worth, Many Clouds and Native River were others to have embellished their careers with victory in the 3m2f handicap chase. It has been sponsored by Ladbrokes since 2017, having previously enjoyed an unbroken association with Hennessy that had endured since its inception in 1957 when Mandarin clinched the first of two wins, a feat matched only twice since by Arkle (1964 & 1965) and Denman (2007 & 2009). There have been no three-time winners, Arkle narrowly failing when beaten by Stalbridge Colonist, to whom he was conceding 35lb, in 1966, and Denman finishing third in 2010. The late Fulke Walwyn enjoyed multiple successes with an unmatched record of seven wins from Mandarin (1957 & 1961), Taxidermist (1958), Mill House (1963), Man of the West (1968), Charlie Potheen (1972) and Diamond Edge (1981). Nicky Henderson (2005 Trabolgan, 2012 Bobs Worth & 2013 Triolo D’Alene) and Paul Nicholls (2003 Strong Flow, 2007 & 2009 Denman) are the most successful current trainers with three wins each. Through Broadheath (1986) and Playschool (1987), Nicholls is one of three people to have both ridden and trained winners of the race. Willie Robinson has ridden the most winners of the race on Mandarin (1961), Mill House (1963) and Man of the West (1968), one more than Barry Geraghty, the only active jockey with two successes. There have been four horses that have captured the Ladbrokes Trophy and the Cheltenham Gold Cup in the same season - Arkle, Bregawn, Denman and Bobs Worth. Native River won the Ladbrokes Trophy and Welsh National in 2016 and the following season landed the 2018 Cheltenham Gold Cup. Many Clouds remains the only horse to have won both the Ladbrokes Trophy and the Grand National at Aintree.

The Watch Racing Free Online At Ladbrokes Handicap Steeple Chase (For The Jim Joel Memorial Trophy) JIM JOEL was a very popular owner breeder who died at the age of 97. One of racing’s greatest benefactors, Mr Joel enjoyed considerable success with more than 1,200 winners both on the flat and over the jumps.
A shy, modest bachelor, Mr Joel, who ran his family’s diamond mining business in South Africa until his death, became an owner soon after his service in the Hussars during the First World War and produced the winners of many big races at his Childwick Bury Stud near St Albans. Maori Venture provided him with his greatest success over the jumps when winning the 1987 Grand National in his famous black and scarlet colours. He is always remembered with respect and admiration.
