Ten runners head to the post for today’s feature race, the Musselburgh Racecourse Premium Annual Member- Ra ship Mares’ Handicap Hurdle Race which starts at 2.20pm The hat-trick seeking Starlyte will prove popular are at hat-trick for the Lucinda Russell stable with 7lb claimer Conner McCann taking over the reins. Top-weighted Alll The ucinda ssell king Glory could prove well-handicapped with Benjamin Macey’s handy 10lb claim and continues to slide down the y well-handi in handy handicap gradually. Sunday Solider made a fair return to action at Ludlow after an impressive season last year andicap gradually ma n Ludlo The return to a softer surface could make her a major player in this competitive field. CRAIG NICHOL obvious jockey to follow. He had several rides here has rode 5 winners from his last 21 rides so is an obvio ss the card Kevlar is an interesting NHF debut in the last yesterday and again has three chances of successes across card. J P McManus sends a one up north and MCLERNON RICHIE MCLER has been trusted for the job. He teams up with Ben n truste e 1.10pm and also has another two chances throughout. CHARLIE MAGGS has been Haslam on Reel Her In, in the also thro operating at 40% strike rate so the 7lb claimer has to be highly respected in the saddle The hat-trick seeking You i Some Girl in the 1.10pm could prove to be his best chance of victory. o
JONJO & A J O’NEILL have been in strong form recently and are solely represented today. They are sending All The Glory a fair way for this race which could prove worthy to follow It is almost impossible to discount the chances of DONALD MCCAIN here and although he isn’t partnered with his partner in crime Brian Hughes, Theo Gillard will ride 2 of his chances which could prove a deadly duo LUCINDA RUSSELL continues in fine form with a strike rate of just over 20% in the last month. She plays a strong hand throughout the day with the favourite in today’s feature race

1.45 THE TWO PLUS TWO HANDICAP CHASE
Our opener is a two miles, three and a half furlongs handicap hurdle for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. As the race name states, this is for conditional jockeys only meaning that many of the riders will just be starting out their NH riding career
The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this one mile, seven and a half furlongs race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today
This is three miles handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 95 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 95 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 90
This is a two miles, seven and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.
2.20 THE MUSSELBURGH RACECOURSE PREMIUM ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MARES’ HANDICAP HURDLE
This two miles and four fulrongs handicap hurdle race has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 120. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage
2.55 THE BLUETREE BOAT BUILDERS
The penultimate race this afternoon is a two miles handicap steeple chase for four-year-old and upwards which have been officially rated 0-110. As all handicaps on this afternoon’s card, the weight that each runner carries is determined by their official handicap rating. In this instance, a horse rated 110 would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 105.
As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four and five and will be run over one mile, seven and a half furlongs.

2. WHERE TO PLACE A BET
Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.
1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.
2. You can play with Tote at one of the many betting stations around the racecourse, Tote offers pool betting rather than ‘prices’ or ‘odds’ offered in the betting ring. The Tote Guarantee you can be safe in the knowledge that they’ll never pay less than the price the horse wins at, and if the pool payout is bigger, you’ll get that.
3. Place bets from the comfort of your seat by visiting Tote.co.uk, the Tote Guarantee still applies and all new customer receive a welcome offer
4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club.

- Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off
- Keep your bet receipt safe You will need this to collect your winnings
- Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’.
- Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’.

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet so privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to ma a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.
