OLLY MURS SATURDAY 14 AUGUST RICK ASTLEY SATURDAY 18 SEPTEMBER TICKETS ON SALE NOW REFUND GUARANTEE
Good afternoon and a warm welcome to the now renamed Betfair Super Sunday – our rearranged Betfair Super Saturday. We are very grateful to the BHA, the Levy Board, ITV and especially our sponsors Betfair, for all their involvement in the restaging of the card in its entirety. What a day of racing we have in store, with the likes of Champ, Clan des Obeaux and 2018 Betfair Hurdle winner, Kalashnikov all in action. We are just sorry you cannot join us, and hope you enjoy watching all the live coverage on ITV4 and Racing TV. Our thanks once again to Betfair who have supported this card for the past 10 years, helping to make it one of jump racing’s great days. This year, the feature race, the Betfair Hurdle is worth £125,000, demonstrating significant investment by the racecourse and Betfair to the industry under the current circumstances, and continuing to make it the richest handicap hurdle in Britain. Whilst we aren’t currently able to welcome crowds to Newbury, I’m very proud to have welcomed over 10,000 of the local community to the site to receive their vaccination against COVID-19 since mid-Jan. The vaccination hub has been a huge success, and we are grateful to the team running the site, the 400 volunteers plus BHA who have enabled us to operate both racedays and vaccination clinics at the same time if required. We hope to be able to welcome you back to Newbury Racecourse in the not-too-distant future, with plenty of exciting plans to be shared in due course. Finally, our thanks must go to the all the horsemen and especially the owners with runners today - your continued support is much appreciated. Julian Thick Chief Executive

The History Of The Betfair Denman Chase
Denman, Hennessy Gold Cup 2009
The Betfair Denman Chase is one of Newbury’s newest races and immediately became one of the most significant conditions chases of the jumps season when it was established in 2000. The race was originally named the Aon Chase and, run over a distance of an extended 2m7f, has become a regular destination for leading staying chasers, many of which go on to contest the Cheltenham Gold Cup. See More Business set the pattern when he captured the inaugural running the year after he landed the Cheltenham Gold Cup. He was the first of nine winners trained by Paul Nicholls whose other winners included champions Kauto Star in 2007 and Denman in 2008. Kauto Star and Denman both went on from Newbury to triumph in the following month’s Cheltenham Gold Cup, a feat matched since by Coneygree in 2015 and Native River in 2018. The popular Denman’s connection with Newbury, where he also became one of only three horses to win two editions of the Hennessy Gold Cup, now the Ladbrokes Trophy, in 2007 and 2009, was formally recognised when the race was renamed the Denman Chase at the time Betfair took over sponsorship in 2012. Native River is the only horse to win the Denman Chase three times after his success in last year’s renewal, while his 2018 victory established Richard Johnson as the most successful jockey in the race with four wins to his name.

The History Of The Betfair Hurdle
Persian War
The Betfair Hurdle is the richest handicap hurdle run in Europe and has a long history as one of the most competitive races in the jumps calendar. When it was first run in 1963, the 2m handicap hurdle took place at Aintree and was known as the Schweppes Gold Trophy, but soon found a permanent home at Newbury. It became an annual target for Ryan Price who captured four of the first five runnings, twice with Rosyth, each winner ridden to victory by Josh Gifford. In 1968 Persian War set a weight-carrying record when he shouldered 11st 13lb to victory and the following month became the first of only two horses to win the showpiece hurdle and the Champion Hurdle. It was another 27 years before Make A Stand, trained by Martin Pipe, matched Persian War’s achievement by which time the Tote had taken over the sponsorship. Nicky Henderson holds the record for the most wins in the race, recording five successes, while Gifford, who also won the race as a trainer when Deep Sensation triumphed in 1990, retains the record for most wins as a jockey.

Race Summary: Always one of the most competitive races of the season and this looks a particularly good renewal, featuring several unexposed sorts who could be ahead of the handicapper.
