Good afternoon and a warm welcome to Newbury Racecourse for BetVictor Hungerford Day, featuring some topquality action, followed by Olly Murs who is returning to the Party in the Paddock stage. This is our first major Saturday at full capacity after a long year, and we are so pleased to see everyone back. Whilst no social distancing will be enforced, we ask all racegoers to be respectful of each other throughout the day. It is going to be a lovely warm day, so tap water is freely available at all bars. Named after the local Berkshire town, today’s feature race is the Group 2 BetVictor Hungerford Stakes. Established in 1949, it was initially run over a mile and a half, before becoming one of the most prestigious 7-furlong races in the Flat calendar. Won last year by subsequent Group 1 winner Dream of Dreams, this year’s line up looks just as exciting. We are also delighted to bring back the Go Racing Green Quiet Zone, which has been introduced across various racecourse’s by Debbie Matthews, to support better mental health awareness within the race-going community. As part of the initiative, any of today’s racegoers experiencing social anxiety will find the dedicated Quiet Zone behind the paddock. This is an alcohol-free area and will have trained staff available to offer support if required. My thanks go to our sponsors, BetVictor, Academy Insurance, Denford Stud, Mettal UK as well as Education for Everyone, who will be running a bucket collection on exit. With the relaxation of restrictions, we are looking forward to the rest of the summer here at Newbury. Rick Astley will be here on Saturday 18 September, performing live after racing on Dubai Duty Free International Saturday, where we will also be celebrating National Racehorse Week. Advanced saver ends on 31 August, with tickets selling fast, so make sure you get yours at the best price possible! Thank you for choosing to spend today with us, and I hope you have an enjoyable and profitable time, and that we will see you again very soon.

Racing Jargon Buster It is easy to be put off by some of the weird and wonderful phrases heard around the racecourse but once you are up to speed, it is all part of the fun. Here are some of the most common racing terms you are likely to hear when you are racing. Brush up on them and you will sound like a seasoned professional in no time! You can also refer to the ‘How To Read Your Racecard’ section for more help. Allowance When a horse carries less weight to compensate for a perceived disadvantage due to age, sex, or its rider’s inexperience.
Furlong The unit of measurement for all races in Great Britain. One furlong is 220 yards or 200 metres (one eighth of a mile).
Apprentice A jockey whose rides carry less weight to take his/her inexperience into account.
Gelding A male horse who has been castrated – ungelded horses are known as colts or entires.
Backward A young horse which needs time to mature, both physically and mentally.
Going Description of the ground on the racecourse depending on how soft it is, ranging from heavy (very soft) to firm (not soft at all). Certain horses have preferences for softer/ firmer conditions.
Colt An ungelded male horse below 4 years old. Connections The owner(s) and trainer of a horse. Distance The length of a race, which on the Flat ranges from five furlongs to two-and-a-half-miles. Draw The position in the starting stalls which a horse is randomly allocated when it is confirmed for a race 48 hours before.
Handicap A type of race in which the higher the horse’s official rating (see below), the more weight it carries, in order to give all horses a theoretically equal chance. Roughly 60% of all races run are handicaps. Juvenile A horse who is two-years-old on the Flat, the youngest age a horse can race.
Mare A female horse over four years old. Younger female horses are called fillies. Maiden A horse who has not yet won a race, also a race only for horses who have not yet won a race. Official Rating A numerical expression of a horse’s ability, in pounds, which determines how much weight it must carry if it races in a handicap. Off The Bit/Bridle Describes a horse being encouraged by its jockey because the horse is struggling to keep up with the leaders. If a horse is described as ‘on the bridle’ it is deemed to be going well i.e. still with plenty of energy. Photo Finish A high-speed electronic camera which captures pictures of the horses as they pass the winning line, allowing the winner to be determined in close finishes. Run Freely/Keenly Describes a horse running too fast, usually early in a race. If a horse uses too much of its energy too early, it tends to compromise its chance of finishing well. Sprint Races over five or six furlongs.
Stalls The gates from which horses start in a Flat race, they are designed to ensure an even start to the race or ‘break’. Stay/’Staying On’ Horses that stay have the stamina required to run over a certain distance. ‘Staying on’ refers to when a horse’s stamina kicks in at the end of a race. Steward A roving official employed by the British Horseracing Authority who is responsible for seeing that the rules of racing are adhered to. Stewards’ Enquiry Held after a race if an incident in which the rules of racing may have been broken has occurred. The result of the race is not official until the stewards’ enquiry has finished. Travelling The way a horse is galloping during the course of a race. Weigh In/Out The process jockeys must undergo before and after a race to ensure the correct weight has been carried.

NUMBER OF DECLARED RUNNERS 8
Betting Forecast: 7-2 Jadaayil (FR), 4-1 Al Kaaser (FR), 9-2 Abiyah Athbah (GB), 11-2 Jamaraat (GB), 7-1 Storm Troupour (US), 8-1 Mazyoonah (GB), 9-1 Toofaan (GB), 10-1 Bayan Athbah (GB) Race Summary: Only a handful of these are proven at this distance and many are trying it for the first time. Al Kaaser’s maiden was a weak affair and he’s been campaigned at a mile or more ever since. However class has often prevailed in this race and he certainly warrants consideration as the top-rated horse. Jadaayil is interesting tried in a visor, but she’ll need to show more speed from the stalls than her last outing here and the lightly raced duo of Bayan Athbah and Jamaraat could easily improve beyond what they’ve shown to date. After winning over 7f last autumn, this race was pinpointed by connections for ABIYAH ATHBAH, who was the best of the older horses over course and distance here last month on easier ground and should be better still, now the ground has dried out.

RACE 2
Race Summary: MASEKELA showed plenty of improvement when only just failing in the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket 5 weeks ago and is clearly the one to beat down in class. Bayside Boy ran to a high level for a newcomer when winning over C&D last month so is the obvious threat, though Seattle King also looked a good prospect when making a winning start at Salisbury.

Hungerford history The Betvictor Hungerford Stakes is one of the most prestigious 7 furlong races in the Flat calendar. With no Group 1 race run at the distance in Britain, it is one of five Group 2 races open to three-year-olds and older in the calendar. Named after the Berkshire town to the west of Newbury, the Hungerford Stakes was established in 1949 when it was initially run over a mile and a half before becoming a 7f race. It took place over Newbury’s round course for many years as a Group 3 race until it was switched to the straight course in 2002, being raised in status to Group 2 level in 2006. By then it had been won by many talented racehorses, the most successful being Jimmy Reppin, a top miler of the sixties, who remains the only horse to win the race twice in 1968 and 1969 in between victories in races like the Sussex Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. Among the Group 1 performers to win in the race have been 7f specialists Salse (1988) and Distant Relative (1989), 1,000 Guineas winner Harayir (1995), Red Evie (2007) and Paco Boy (2008), who were also winners of the Lockinge Stakes, leading miler Excelebration (2011) and champion sprinter Lethal Force (2012). The most successful jockey in the race has been Frankie Dettori whose six wins were achieved on Inchinor (1993), Pollen Count (1994, dead-heat), Bin Rosie (1996), Decorated Hero (1997), Lend a Hand (1999), Shakespearean (2010).
Inchinor
John Gosden is the most successful trainer, also sending out to six winners, Pollen Count (1994, dead-heat), Decorated Hero (1997), Muhtathir (1998), Sleeping Indian (2005), Gregorian (2013), Richard Pankhurst (2016). Won in 2020 by Dream of Dreams when run behind closed doors, he went on to win the Group 1 Sprint Cup at Haydock. The race is sponsored by BetVictor for the first time in 2021.
