NEWMARKET WELCOMES YOU

Good afternoon and a warm welcome to Festival Friday and the second day of the 2022 Moët & Chandon July Festival. We are thrilled to welcome racegoers back in full for the first time since 2019 and we are in store for a top-class day of action on the track, headlined by the Group 1 Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes, which forms part of the QIPCO British Champions Series. Last year’s running was one of the races of the season when Snow Lantern swooped late to grab the honours and today’s race looks every bit as exciting a contest. I would like to thank bet365 for their support across all three days of the meeting and today’s sponsors Tattersalls, The European Breeders’ Fund, Weatherbys, Arioneo and Moët & Chandon. We are delighted to be welcoming over 350 local school children and their parents from the Under Starters Orders initiative, part of our ongoing community work at The Jockey Club. Their visit to us today ends a three-day programme of activity which has included visits to Godolphin’s Dalham Hall Stud, The National Horseracing Museum and The National Stud and our thanks go to Godolphin, the team at Racing to School and all those who have helped to organise. Looking to the future we are in the midst of our series of Newmarket Nights with the likes of The Script, Queen Symphonic, Anne Marie and The Wombats taking to the stage in the coming weeks. Our Summer Saturdays are also in full swing and we have Glenn Roeder Raceday in aid of The Brain Tumour Charity, our Gin & Fizz and Roaring 20s and the family-focused Superhero Raceday on 6th August all approaching fast. More information is available via the course office or online we hope that you will join us as we continue to celebrate the summer season here at the home of horseracing. Thank you for choosing to spend your day with us. On behalf of the Newmarket Racecourses team I hope you have an enjoyable experience and if you have a runner, I wish you the very best of luck.

Best wishes, SOPHIE ABLE General Manager of Newmarket Racecourses DON’T FORGET OUR NEXT MEETING - SATURDAY 9 JULY THE MOËT & CHANDON JULY FESTIVAL - DARLEY JULY CUP DAY The final day of The July Festival is all about the Darley July Cup. This Group 1 Race is one of the most valuable and prestigious sprint races in the world and the winner is often acknowledged to be the best sprinter in Europe. The day is also eternally popular with families who flock to our relaxed garden enclosure for quality time together.

THE WEATHERBYS BRITISH EBF MAIDEN STAKES Day two of the July Festival gets underway with the Weatherbys-sponsored maiden, a class 3 contest over seven furlongs and 13 two-year-olds go to post. Of the 13, 10 are racecourse debutants, so what of the trio who boast that little experience. Ezaj is the most experienced – having run twice – and built on his Newbury fifth by going one place better at Doncaster. Caught wide, away from the main group, on debut, the son of No Nay Never ran on quite well and stepped up to this trip last time. He travelled quite well again, but he clearly has his limitations and might again be vulnerable. Interestingly, the same connections are represented by one of the newcomers, the War Command colt Al Hajaj. James Tate’s Oasis Power finished third of five (beaten almost 9 lengths) on his sole start at Leicester, so the pick of those with previous experience would look to be Hope You Can Run, who finished runner-up in 10-runner maiden over this trip at Doncaster. The Lope de Vega colt broke well and was prominent throughout, seemingly knowing his job well, which is common with horses from the Johnston stable. Having initially looked like he could drop back through the field, he stayed on really well to record a most encouraging start to his career. The fourth home is now rated 77, which gives the form a relatively solid look. He certainly sets the standard and Frankie Dettori takes the ride. Charlie Appleby has won this race on three occasions since 2017, although it is worth noting that two of those did have the benefit of having had a run. Appleby – who boasts a fine strike-rate with his two-year-olds on the July course (29% (54 / 189 )) – saddles two this afternoon, those being Desert Order and Flying Honours. The former is a Dubawi colt who has plenty of stamina in his pedigree and similar comments apply to the Flying Honours, a Sea The Stars colt, who is a full-brother to Snow Tempest, winner of a maiden in France over 1m6½f only last month. Richard Hannon is another who is doubly-represented and has also won the race three times in the past nine years. The past two of those winners were debutants and Signcastle City is one who boasts a nice pedigree, being a Dark Angel colt out of an Oasis Dream mare. As the grey carries the silks of Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, he will be partnered by Andrea Atzeni, whilst Sean Levy is aboard Manifested, a colt by Camacho. There is plenty of stamina in the pedigree of Brian Meehan’s Bridge, whilst John and Thady Gosden are represented by the George Strawbridge owned (and bred) Kingman colt, Epictetus. Named after the Greek philosopher, he is a half-brother to Jumbly, who won her first two starts as a juvenile for Roger Charlton. Leadman is another son of Kingman, who represents trainer Andrew Balding and the trainer won this race two years ago. A full-brother to Baseman, he was beaten a head on his racecourse debut at two. The field is made up of Fully Deployed (Henry Spiller) and Ray Vonn (Gay Kelleway), who both hail from stables who aren’t really associated with two-year-old winners. Paul Ferguson Weatherbys

He might need further in time but ability may well pull him through, so he’s preferred to Hope You Can Run, the clear pick of those with experience, while Leadman and Epictetus, both sons of Kingman, are other interesting newcomers.

Sandrine continued her fine start to life on the track with a comfortable victory over Desert Dreamer to make it three wins from three starts. Jockey David Probert kept the filly towards the rear of the pack before pushing her along to lead when approaching the final two furlongs. Probert then asked for more in the closing stages and Sandrine duly obliged, staying on well to fend off the danger from the Stuart Williams-trained Desert Dreamer. That success followed on from her Albany Stakes win at Ascot a month prior.

The unbeaten Lezoo looks to have a brilliant chance of follwing up her Listed success last time out.

PLAY SMARTER

While strong cases can be made for several of these, it’s CANDLEFORD who stands out on the back of his impressive Royal Ascot success. The handicapper has taken a swipe at the 4-y-o, handing him a 13lb higher mark, but there’s every chance that this step up on trip will help unlock further improvement. Spirit Mixer was a fine second in the Northumberland Plate and merits respect, but Summer’s Knight caught the eye when fifth in the same race and is feared most. Midnights Legacy also has claims.

Alcohol Free went off as the market favourite but it was the Richard Hannon-trained Snow Lantern who stole the show to record a half-length victory over Mother Earth. The three-year-old took a keen hold and was in touch with the leaders before being pushed along when two furlongs from the finish. Jockey Sean Levey switched right and asked for more from the filly when approaching the final furlong before running on well to lead in the final strides. Aidan O’Brien was hoping to make it three wins in six years in this race but Mother Earth couldn’t fend off the danger from Snow Lantern. Alcohol Free completed the top three.

O rig i n a l ly excl u s ive ly f o r t h re e ye a r old fillies, the race became open to older fillies and m a r e s f r o m 1 9 74 o n w a r d s . It was made a Group Three contest when the Pattern race system was established in 1971. Subsequently upgraded to Group Two status in 1987, the Falmouth Stakes was given Group One status in 2004. During the period when confined to three year olds only, Happy Laughter (1953) and Waterloo (1972) both followed up on earlier success in the 1000 Guineas but the contest undoubtedly had improved status when the age restriction was lifted. Notable winners since the race became open to all ages in 1974 include Al Bahathri (1985), one of the early leading lights for the late Hamdan Al Maktoum. Also successful in the Irish 1000 Guineas and Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, Hamdan Al Maktoum named the all-weather gallop in Newmarket in her honour. Sonic Lady followed in Al Bahathri’s footsteps by taking the Irish 1000 Guineas and Coronation Stakes on her way to Falmouth Stakes success in 1986. She returned to successfully defend her crown in 1987 and become the first dual winner. The first Group One running of the race in 2004 saw Soviet Song prevail over 1000 Guineas winner Attraction. Soviet Song won again in 2005 to become the second and most recent dual winner.

Owned by the Elite Racing Club and trained by James Fanshawe, Soviet Song attempted the hat-trick in 2006 but could only manage sixth behind shock 50-1 winner Rajeem. Goldikova (2009) is without doubt the best ever winner of the Falmouth Stakes. Trained in France by Freddy Head for owner-breeders the Wertheimer Brothers, she won a remarkable 14 races at Group One level during her career, including the Breeders’ Cup Mile on a record three occasions. She had to work hard for her success at Newmarket, with Heaven Sent staying on to get within half a length of her at the finish. Heaven Sent was trained by Sir Michael Stoute who, alongside Alec Taylor Jr, is the winning-most trainer of all-time in the Falmouth Stakes with six victories - Royal Heroine (1983), Sonic Lady (1986 & 1987), Lovers Knot (1998), Integral (2014) and Veracious (2019). The late Lester Piggott won the race seven times, more than any other jockey in history. Of today’s current crop of riders Ryan Moore leads the way with three victories in the race – Integral (2014), Alice Springs (2016) and Roly Poly (2017).

PLAY SMARTER

A case can be made for a few of these but the most persuasive one is for NIZAAKA who is proving another fine advert for the training skills of Jane Chapple-Hyam and taken to defy a 5lb rise and follow up her recent stylish C&D success. La Maquina took this contest 12 months ago and is feared most in his repeat bid although Dashing Dick, Lord Rapscallion and Ataser all need factoring in too.

Emergency Procedures

Newmarket Racecourses has put in place a number of security and safety measures to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However an incident may occur which is beyond our control and it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency. As part of our safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced stewards and you will see them at various points throughout the racecourse. In the event of a situation which requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions calmly and quickly. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards. The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area. Should it be necessary to evacuate the course, the most likely scenario is that you will be ushered onto the track itself via the emergency gates. From there you will be held in an area of safety and receive further instructions as appropriate. It may give you some peace of mind if you pre plan and agree a meeting place, just in case you become separated from your party. The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, please remember in the event of an emergency: TAKE YOUR BELONGINGS WITH YOU. UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE STEWARDS, PROCEED QUICKLY AND CALMLY TO THE SAFE AREA. Racegoers are reminded to keep all their belongings with them at all times, and not to leave any packages unattended. Any such packages may be confiscated by the Racecourse Management.

Health And Safety Notice

The Racecourse would be grateful if you would observe all Health & Safety requirements whilst you are at Newmarket Racecourses. The emergency exits from the bars onto the grandstand steppings are painted yellow and we would request that you do not stop whilst in this area. We would also request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing ramp and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting on to the actual racecourse. We would also like to remind racegoers that the first aid room is located adjacent to the main Premier Enclosure Entrance (Rowley Mile) or Premier Entrance 2 (July Course).

Racehorse & Jockey Welfare

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials are here to ensure that the racecourse delivers those standards. In addition Newmarket Racecourses employs two veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey.

If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.

Photography

Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the racecourse enclosures. Photography is not permitted in any other area without the permission of the Head of Racing. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication. Racegoers are reminded that flash photography is not permitted as the flash can alarm horses and may endanger horses, jockeys and public.

The official photographer is John Hoy. To see any of his images please visit www.hoycubedphotography.com.
