We sincerely thank Sophie Able and her team along with Stephen Wallis for their never-ending enthusiasm in insuring that Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Stable Staff are all looked after so very well.

THE JOCKEY CLUB

WELCOMES YOU

A warm welcome to the Rowley Mile for Royal Bahrain Sun Chariot Day, featuring fantastic Group One racing.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors for today, EBF, Tattersalls, Royal Bahrain and Prestige Vehicles, for their generous support.

Named after Sun Chariot, King George VI’s Fillies’ Triple Crown winner of 1942, the race is in its 19th year of top level status and some classy fillies and mares have added their name to the race’s roll of honour in that time. The line-up regularly contains some of the best mares in training on both sides of the Irish Sea and the English Channel, and recent winners of this race include Sky Lantern (2013), Laurens (2018) and last year’s winner Saffron Beach.

As we look ahead to the rest of The Newmarket Gold Season on the Rowley Mile, there will be the chance to see some of the future stars in action, including in the Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes and the Group One bet365 Fillies’ Mile Tickets for these racedays are available on our website.

I do hope you have a very enjoyable afternoon with us, and I wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck

Best wishes, SOPHIE ABLE General Manager of Newmarket Racecourses

NEWMARKET NEWS:

A FR E S H START FO R STR ADIVARI US AT TH E NATIO NAL STU D

One of modern racing’s superstars, Stradivarius, has been retired from racing and will stand at The National Stud from 2023, it has been announced this week

The prolific son of Sea The Stars won seven Group 1 races and close to £3.5million in prize money, as well as the Weatherbys Hamilton Stayers’ £1 million bonus two years running

Owned and bred by Bjorn Nielsen and trained by John Gosden, Stradivarius quickly became a firm favourite with racegoers after winning the Goodwood Cup in taking fashion in 2017.

Nielsen reflected: “It has been a fairytale from start to finish He had great presence when he went to the races, which the crowds loved, and his overall soundness was rare to see in any horse never mind one of his age. He is a tribute to John Gosden, who has trained him so brilliantly for so long.”

Stradivarius is the highest earning son of leading sire Sea The Stars and performed consistently at the highest level throughout his career, winning four Goodwood Cups, three Ascot Gold Cups, three Lonsdale Stakes and the Doncaster Cup twice.

Trainer John Gosden paid tribute to him and said: “Stradivarius has been the most extraordinary and unique racehorse throughout his career He exhibited joy in his training and has given enormous pleasure to everyone, both on and off the track."

“His constitution has been a marvel to behold and his exciting style of travelling easily in a race, and then quickening to pounce, reflected his character. He goes to stud with an amazing race record and enormous affection. To train he has been a complete joy to all of us here. He will remain close to home and is already looking forward to his new career.”

Anna Kerr, Chief Executive Officer of The National Stud, added: “We are delighted to have a racehorse of the calibre of Stradivarius joining the roster at The National Stud. He has consistently demonstrated many of the attributes that his sire Sea The Stars had, including consistency, soundness and a phenomenal temperament."

“The whole team are looking forward to him arriving here in the coming weeks and he will be available for breeders to view at the stud during the December sales.”

The National Stud, which is part of The Jockey Club, has been an integral part of the British thoroughbred breeding industry for more than 100 years. Alongside breeding services it also delivers a world-class education programme in thoroughbred breeders and provides public tours through Discover Newmarket.

BEACH BIDS TO LEAVE RIVALS ALL AT SEA WITH SUCCESSFUL DEFENCE OF HER SUN CHARIOT CROWN

Jane Chapple-Hyam admits it will be a “very special occasion” if stable star Saffron Beach could secure another big race victory on her hometown track by successfully defending her Royal Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes title at Newmarket today.

Having provided the Newmarket handler with a red letter day at the track 12 months ago when becoming her first Group One winner, the New Bay filly will now bid to join Sahpresa (2009, 2010 & 2011) by becoming only the second multiple winner of the mile highlight since it became an all-aged Group One affair in 2004

Since her top-level triumph on the Rowley Mile last year Saffron Beach has added further Group One glory to her name in the Prix Rothschild at Deauville along with winning the Group Two Duke Of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot in another prosperous campaign

Although meeting with defeat on her most recent start behind Pearls Galore in the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown earlier this month, Chapple-Hyam is confident that a return to a track she is three from five on can see her bounce back to winning ways Chapple-Hyam said: “Last year was very special as it was on our local track two miles up the road and she did it nicely. A year on we are going back there to try and win it back-to-back.

“We did a similar thing with Mull Of Killough in the Earl Of Sefton who won that back to-back in 2013 and 2014 and if we can do it with Saffron Beach it would be a very special occasion You can’t take anything away from the winner at Leopardstown as she won and we loomed up but just got stuck in the holding ground There was so much rain at Leopardstown I can’t tell you. But everybody was in the same boat and had to run on it and it was one of those things One is guessing the ground at Newmarket will be Good, Good to Firm which would help, and she has grown up a lot now mentally and physically.”

Unlike 12 months ago Saffron Beach currently heads the market for this year’s renewal of the Royal Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes However Chapple-Hyam insists she feels no extra pressure on her shoulders given the fact that her stable star is so well suited to the Rowley Mile She added: “You don’t feel pressure with her as she is always a horse that tries. She is not a horse that has got to sit last and get luck in running and come from off the pace and that is harder with horses with that style of running Her style of running means she is up on the pace so she never gets boxed in so you don’t have that worry. She loves the Rowley Mile and as we have seen in all of her previous runs whether she is first or second or whether it is a Guineas, Oh So Sharp or Sun Chariot she always tries her hardest. It is a track that she enjoys running on I’m sure there will be a few nerves when there are two to load but that is part of racing and part of the buzz about it and what gets the adrenaline up.”

Aside from being a year older Chapple-Hyam feels that Saffron Beach, who will be reunited with last year’s winning jockey William Buick once again, is a much stronger individual than the one that tackled the race 12 months ago

She added: “I weighed her on Tuesday night and she was over 500 kilograms It is telling you she has the power and the strength I think because she has strengthened up and because we have spaced her races, we’ve not got a lean machine, but a nice developed mare which is good in that sense. She is very powerful in her front now with powerful shoulders William is back on board her and they are a good winning combination. I’m sure he wants to win another Sun Chariot as much as Abington Place so I’m sure he will be doing his best aboard her I believe she is a horse jockeys can get a quick rapport with. She is straightforward once in running, getting to the start she can take a hold “We are lucky we have had some of the best on her. We’ve had no hard luck stories and they have all given their best on her and they have all enjoyed riding her.”

This season is the last Saffron Beach will stay in training with Chapple-Hyam after it was confirmed earlier this month she will be offered at the Sceptre session at this year’s Tattersalls December Mares Sale on 29th November

While Chapple-Hyam admits it will be a sad day when she leaves her yard she claims this might not be the last time we see the dual Group One winner on the track before she goes under the hammer She said: “It will be a sad day when she goes. She has exceeded expectations for us I think it will be weird driving in and not having her head pop out of box one but we’ve known for a while she is going to the sale. In the back of your head that makes it easier. This might not be her last run in Britain as she is in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot on Champions Day so you can never say never while if she wins there is also the Breeders’ Cup. She will be sold at auction in training and she will have an entry for the Hong Kong Mile I’m sure if it was a stud farm that bought her they would retire her, but maybe if it was a foreign owner from afar they might like to race her in their colours at Sha Tin."

"I hope she gets a super stallion as she deserves that and deserves a nice rest at stud and some babies. It would be nice if one of her offspring comes through the doors but whatever stud farm she ends up with they have got their trainers but you never know one of them might pop through the ring.”

SAFFRON

Saffron Beach gave Jane Chapple-Hyam her first win in this race when William Buick clinched an impressive victory

The three-year-old filly made all, leading towards the far side and was going easily just over two furlongs out.

The filly then went clear just over a furlong out before keeping on strongly to fend off her rivals, most notably the favourite on the day, Mother Earth, who was unable to make an impression over the final furlong.

Overall it was a very impressive performance from the filly making it two wins on the bounce following her Sandown success two months before.

Emergency Procedures

Newmarket Racecourses has put in place a number of security and safety measures to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However an incident may occur which is beyond our control and it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency.

As part of our safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced stewards and you will see them at various points throughout the racecourse.

In the event of a situation which requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions calmly and quickly. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards

The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area Should it be necessary to evacuate the course, the most likely scenario is that you will be ushered onto the track itself via the emergency gates. From there you will be held in an area of safety and receive further instructions as appropriate It may give you some peace of mind if you pre plan and agree a meeting place, just in case you become separated from your party The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, please remember in the event of an emergency: TAKE YOUR BELONGINGS WITH YOU. UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE STEWARDS, PROCEED QUICKLY AND CALMLY TO THE SAFE AREA Racegoers are reminded to keep all their belongings with them at all times, and not to leave any packages unattended Any such packages may be confiscated by the Racecourse Management.

Health And Safety Notice

The Racecourse would be grateful if you would observe all Health & Safety requirements whilst you are at Newmarket Racecourses. The emergency exits from the bars onto the grandstand steppings are painted yellow and we would request that you do not stop whilst in this area. We would also request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing ramp and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting on to the actual racecourse We would also like to remind racegoers that the first aid room is located adjacent to the main Premier Enclosure Entrance (Rowley Mile) or Premier Entrance 2 (July Course).

Racehorse & Jockey Welfare

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine BHA Officials are here to ensure that the racecourse delivers those standards. In addition Newmarket Racecourses employs two veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse

In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey

If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.

Photography

Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the racecourse enclosures. Photography is not permitted in any other area without the permission of the Head of Racing. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication. Racegoers are reminded that flash photography is not permitted as the flash can alarm horses and may endanger horses, jockeys and public.
