PINATUBO
Thank you Newmarket
On Friday 23 September I was pleased to extend my company’s investment in horseracing to include the entire card on the second day of the Cambridgeshire meeting Newmarket Racecourses excelled to make sure our branding was prominent and that our guests enjoyed first class hospitality and a day to remember, and I would like to thank the business community of Newmarket, the media and the wider racing community for their support, and all those who helped make Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Day at Newmarket such a memorable occasion.
In my experience, Newmarket and its dedication to the racehorse is unequalled anywhere in the world and I am delighted to give it my continued support.
Malih L Al Basti Owner & Founder, Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai.THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU
A warm welcome to the Rowley Mile for Dubai Future Champions Saturday, drawing an end to Gold Season here at Newmarket.
My thanks go to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Godolphin for their generous and ongoing support of this weekend.
Today’s card sees three Group races, including the Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes, often used by trainers to kick start a horse’s career Previous winners of the race include Frankel, Dawn Approach and Churchill, all of whom went on to win the following season’s 2000 Guineas back at the Rowley Mile.
Off the track, don’t miss the Retraining of Racehorses Parade before racing in the parade ring. Showcasing several horses that found their new owners via the Godolphin Rehoming Scheme, the parade includes Cross Counter, the first UK trained winner of the Melbourne Cup, who is now an ambassador for the Godolphin Lifetime Care Programme. There is also the opportunity to play ‘Darts with the Stars’ against professional darts players Bobby George and Peter Manley. Visit the marquee near the boulevard.
There are only three days of racing left on The Rowley Mile in 2022, including Two-Year-Old Day on Wednesday 19th October and the Finale Meeting across Friday 28th and Saturday 29th October. Tickets for all these fixtures are on sale via our website.
I do hope you have a very enjoyable afternoon with us, and I wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck Best wishes,
SOPHIE ABLE

NEWMARKET
Nearly 200 schoolchildren are being treated to an exclusive ‘behind the scenes’ look at the horseracing industry in Newmarket this week, as the sport looks to inspire the next generation.
Run by Godolphin in collaboration with The Jockey Club and Racing To School, Dubai Future Education Week aims to inspire young people to become fans of and work in the sport by combining the Dubai Future Champions Festival at Newmarket’s Rowley Mile racecourse, Book One of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and this educational venture under one umbrella
As part of the scheme, around 180 Year 8 pupils from Newmarket Academy are being handed the chance to get a ‘money can’t buy’ look at the racing industry around the town, which includes visits to the National Horseracing Museum, the Tattersalls Sales, Rossdales Equine Hospital and Godolphin’s state of the art Dalham Hall Stud.
The week of activities is part of the Newmarket Academy Godolphin Beacon Project, which will hand schoolchildren aged between 11 and 16 opportunities to get a taste for the sport and the careers it can offer, while Godolphin itself works with children from as young as nine as part of their wider charitable scheme. Penny Taylor, Charities Manager at Godolphin, explained that the scheme has a crucial role in helping to persuade more people to consider a career in racing at a time when the industry is facing a considerable skills shortage.
She said: “Godolphin’s charitable programme aims to promote an awareness, passion and care for thoroughbreds, while nurturing our industry and its infrastructure.
“Through the Newmarket Academy Godolphin Beacon Project, we have a range of different initiatives each year which are all about raising awareness about racing and giving the children an understanding of the opportunities racing can give them
“The school are even sponsoring a race at the Rowley Mile on Friday and I think Newmarket Academy is the only school in the country to have a race named after it! All of the Year 8 children will be there and having seen all the background that leads to a day at the races, they’ll be there to see the end product, so it’s very much a full circle week
“The fact that so many of these children have never actually come into contact with a horse before is something we’re becoming increasingly aware of. Despite living here in the town, opportunities aren’t readily available to be able to do things like this so we’re opening it up to them and giving them this hands on experience.
“It’s great to see the joy it brings them and it’s raising their confidence. Suddenly you’re seeing children do things they didn’t think they could do They haven’t touched a horse before and suddenly they’re riding a pony. That confidence is the starting point and it encourages them to look into
building new skills and considering this sport as a career.”
Charlie Appleby, Godolphin’s principal trainer, added: “This week is hugely important for the horses, but it’s also a hugely educational week for the children. It’s been fantastic to see the children from Newmarket Academy coming up over the last few weeks and doing lots of different things.
“It’s great to see from our point of view It’s fresh and that’s what this weekend is all about. At the end of the day, if we’re producing horses for the future we need somebody to help out and care for them, so they come hand in hand and full credit has to go to everyone at Godolphin who’s guiding them It’s refreshing to see both here and on the racecourse.”
Meanwhile, this week is also an important one for the bloodstock industry, with Book One of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale sitting alongside Saturday’s Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes for two year olds, a key pointer to future equine stars
The title sponsors Darley have enjoyed some fantastic success in the race since supporting it for the first time in 2000 and Sam Bullard, Director of Stallions at Darley, explained just how significant the Group One contest is to the organisation
He said: “The Dewhurst is a fantastic race and it’s one we’ve supported since 2000 It’s a brilliant occasion for the town, of course, but from a professional point of view it’s been a huge race for our stallions and the bloodstock industry as a whole
“It’s a race we’ve had plenty of success in since then Shamardal won this race back in 2004 and along with Dubawi he has gone on to become one of our great stallions, while Teofilo won it in 2006 and he has a key contender in Naval Power this year There’s also New Approach, who won it in 2007 before going on to produce a Derby winner at Epsom Downs in the form of Masar.
“More recently we’ve had horses like Too Darn Hot and Pinatubo winning the Dewhurst for us, so it’s a really important race for a young stallion and one I think a global audience looks to see what comes out of it from a stallion perspective
“The Dewhurst just frequently produces everything which we require in a thoroughbred There’s a certain precocity and it’s at the end of the two year old season so there’s also a need to be mature I think a Dewhurst winner needs a good temperament as the Newmarket heath doesn’t suit everybody and though it’s a very fair race it’s got a tough uphill finish. It tests every aspect and you have to be a very good horse to be able to win it
“It’s a really exciting time of the year and when these horses start to come through we talk about how fickle the market is and how quickly we move from one star to another. We are incredibly lucky to have a number of top horses to be coming through at the moment and our new yearlings to be selling this year are Blue Point, Masar and the sensational Too Darn Hot. It’s gearing up to be a fantastic week.”

Today’s RoR Parade
A parade of retired racehorses takes place in the paddock from 13.00 to 13.15. The parade showcases the versatility of the thoroughbred together with the range of activities open to racehorses when they finish their racing careers, thanks to the work of Retraining of Racehorses (RoR).
The parade features several horses that found their new owners and vocation via the Godolphin Rehoming scheme. The parade includes Cross Counter, the first UK trained winner of the Melbourne Cup, who is now an ambassador for the Godolphin Lifetime Care programme.

Namibian and Julie FrizzellHEATH: A HISTORY
Newmarket and horses have been connected since Queen Boadicea founded a Royal stud at Exning. More than 1,000 years later, Sir Richard d’Argentine developed a “New Market” in this location.
17th Century
Newmarket became a favourite destination of King James I, who moved the Royal court there for a time and raced horses on the Heath. His grandson, Charles II, built the first recorded stand.
19th Century
Lord George Bentinck, owner of a large expanse of heathland and a Jockey Club member turned acres of scrubland over to grass, purchased adjacent land and established the gallops which still exist today.
World Wars I and II
The Rowley Mile stands and heath were occupied by the military
The heath was converted into an airfield for training officers and no flying was permitted on the racedays
1980s
The airfield was decommissioned
Newmarket Heath surveyed by I.Champan in 1787 shows the state of the racecourses close to the time of the Jockey Club’s founding.Exning and Newmarket were notably quite established.
1886 Map shows Hamilton Road and the area north of the heath including Southfield Farm and Seven Springs are relatively similar today.
Today Today the heath forms the primary training grounds to the largest cluster of racehorses on the planet between two and three thousand in number at any one time It’s combination of training facilities and their interaction with the town, coupled with its unique heritage, are a vital contributor to Newmarket’s position as the preeminent racing and breeding centre for thoroughbreds and spiritual home of horseracing globally
World War II brought formal airfield facilities which occupied the heath for just under 40 years.
ROWLEY MILE & JULY COURSE
A number of courses have been in use in Newmarket over the centuries. The evolution of Rowley Mile and the July Course reflects how the sport has changed to be enjoyed by all, and not just the privileged few.
17th Century
The most significant early development within racing in Newmarket came in 1665, when King Charles II, added a third “Round Course” to the two already existing courses in Newmarket, the Beacon Course (today the Rowley Mile) and the Cambridgeshire Course All three courses were to be used for a new race which was first run in 1666, the Newmarket Town Plate It was stated that the race should be run “forever”, and it continues to be run today. Due to the nature of racing at the time agile viewing was required, with spectators largely looking on from horseback or carriages.
19th Century
18th Century
The Jockey Club’s presence in Newmarket in the 1750s had a significant impact on Newmarket heath’s physical environment, increasing racing provisions and changing it from the playground of the nobility it had been up to that point. By 1756 the Round Course built its first stand, simple in nature with stables below and viewing above At The Rowley Mile smaller racing facilities, a weighing house and stables were added and in 1774 the land used for racing was extended and formalised to become the Ancaster Mile
Over the late 18th and 19th Century, races were changing shorter distances and more fixed finishing posts meant the nature of spectating was equally shifting. The 1850s brought significant reorganisation on the heath associated with the growing focus on the Rowley Mile including its first stand. This was replaced by the Astley Stand in 1875 when a stand exclusively for trainers and jockeys was also built, located on the site of the current Head-on Stand.
20th Century
1911 saw further development with a new weighing room at Rowley Mile (now known as the Hong Kong Suite) designed by Walter Brierley. New and more modest stands for the public and Jockey Club members were also built. As crowds grew at the July Course’s summer meetings, concern over extending facilities and ruining the ‘picnic atmosphere’ were debated. In the 1930s, five main buildings were constructed The Weighing Room, Head-on Stand, and 3 similar structures for Members, Tattersalls, and Silver Ring patrons. These still form the primary trackside viewing facilities today.
Post-War Decades
Immediately following the second world war, the July Course saw crowds grow for its summer Derby Day to levels of attendance not seen today. However it was not to last and in 1954 declining attendance figures brought proposals for a round course in front of the Rowley Mile stands, with the suggestion it would make it easier for spectators to view. In 1958 a round course was laid out and it was used until 1973
1980s to Present
The most recent stage in the Rowley Mile’s evolution is the Millennium Stand, which was unveiled by the Queen on 6 May 2000 The Rowley Mile and July Course can welcome up to 20,000 people

NEWMARKET NEWS: RACEGOERS HAVE THE CHANCE TOMORROW TO TEST THEIR DARTS SKILLS AGAINST STARS OF THE OCHE MANLEY AND GEORGE
Darts star Peter Manley is looking forward to ticking another racecourse off the bucket list tomorrow (Saturday 8th October) when visiting Newmarket’s Rowley Mile for the first time to take part in a darts challenge event against racegoers alongside legend of the game - Bobby George. Spectators attending the meeting, which is day two of the Dubai Future Champions Festival, will be able to test their darts skills against the pair in a game called ‘Magic Numbers’, whereby challengers have to match the individual score thrown by each icon.
Action on the oche will get underway at 11.50am in a marquee located between the bottom end of the parade ring and the Millennium Grandstand and will run throughout the day in between races.
During a career spanning more than 30 years George, nicknamed ‘The King Of Bling’, claimed several titles including the 1979 and 1986 News Of The World Championship along with twice finishing runner-up in the British Darts Organisation (BDO) World Championship in 1980 and 1994
As for former Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) number one Manley, he has a CV which includes victory in the 2003 Las Vegas Desert Classic along with reaching three PDC World Championship Finals in 1999, 2002 and 2006.
Manley said: “Newmarket is one of the racecourses I’ve not been to so I’m looking forward to it. I’ve been to the likes of Epsom and Aintree but never Newmarket so it is another one off the bucket list.
“We will play the Magic Numbers game as it is a nice easy game that everyone can have a go at.
“This gives racegoers the chance to have a little throw and see how hard the game is Most will have watched darts on the television at some point.
“What makes it more nervous for them is standing there throwing in front of a crowd as it is totally different to throwing a dart at home or down the pub.
“It is all about having a good bit of banter and making it a fun day.”
Both players are well respected in the game having carved out long and successful careers. However Manley insists events like this are made all the more enjoyable working with George along with recalling memorable tales from the past, He added: “Working with a guy like Bobby is great and everyone loves him. He is just amazing and he is out there on his own at this type of event.
“We both like having a chat with the racegoers and not many other sports allow opportunities to get close to the participants
“Back in the day I was seen as the villain and people still ask me about things that happened 20 years ago. It is great that the interest is still there.”
Last month the pair participated in a similar event at Market Rasen and Manley, who is the current Professional Darts Players Association chairman, hopes their latest venture will prove equally as successful Manley said: “It was non-stop at Market Rasen and we didn’t get a chance to sit down until after the last race.
“It was a good afternoon though and was busy the whole way through which is what we want. It really is a great bit of fun. “Hopefully it will be as busy as the one at Market Rasen and we can all have another exciting day.”
There will be plenty of other action away from the track, which features the Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes, with a DJ set after racing, along with a Retraining Of Racehorses parade and face painting and a bouncy castle for children.

NEWMARKET NEWS: TRAINER BOYLE HOPES TO CELEBRATE CLUB
CESAREWITCH VICTORY IN LAS VEGAS
Louisa Allen and Richard Farmer with Going GoneJim Boyle hopes Going Gone can help get the party started thousands of miles away in Las Vegas on Saturday by securing what he describes would be a real “feather in his cap” moment with victory in the Club Godolphin Cesarewitch Handicap at Newmarket.
The progressive four year old, who is already a dual winner this season, will take on 22 rivals in the two and a quarter mile test as he bids to give Boyle the most valuable success of his career in the heritage handicap, which is worth £103,080 to the winner.
However, while hopeful of a big run from the gelded son of Le Havre, the Epsom handler will have to make do with watching the race from a television screen after double booking himself on a trip to Las Vegas, which is eight hours behind Newmarket.
He said: “A friend of mine invited me to the Ryder Cup the other year which was then cancelled but he got the air miles back. He rang me at the start of the year and said ‘do you fancy going to Las Vegas in October?’ I said yes as I didn’t realise this would happen!
“We are out there for four nights and we are going to watch the college football game between Notre Dame and BYU but for the rest of the trip we will play it by ear
“Thank God his owners Paul Taylor and Richard O’Dywer have a good nature and they have had a laugh about it!
“They have been fantastic supporters Richard came down 15 years ago and spent the morning with me after contacting me out of the blue We got on really well and they have been with me ever since.
“Regarding the race everyone wants to win these heritage handicaps They are every bit as hard as the pattern races, if not more so It would be a big feather in our cap if we could pull it off but we are under no illusions of the task.”
Going Gone has taken his form to new heights this season with victories in the Great Metropolitan Handicap at Epsom Downs in the Mallard Handicap at Doncaster However not all has been plain sailing, with Boyle describing him as a “hooligan” in his early days
The trainer said: “We took him to Salisbury and it was a disaster We hoped he was our flagship horse. He was big and backwards and we weren’t expecting miracles but we thought he would run well but he was an absolute hooligan
“He was dripping with sweat and he played up horrendously and they couldn’t get him in the stalls There was a few long faces but the decision was made then to geld him and we haven’t looked back since.
“It took a while for his brain to unwind last season but after that win at Newmarket last autumn but it was at that point he was starting to realise his potential as he was impressive that day.”
Victory in the Great Metropolitan was a fantastic start to the season for Going Gone, but it was his fourth place finish in the Ascot Stakes at the Royal meeting in June that opened the gateway to staying options.
Boyle added: “We targeted the Great Metropolitan over the winter and it was great win it as we love having winners at Epsom but it was a hell of a run at Ascot.
“We were rolling the dice in terms of the trip We knew he would gallop and stay well but two and a half miles at Ascot was a big step up but we felt it was within his reach and a nice race to have a go at
“He had to come from some way back but he made up a lot of ground and ran a really gutsy race and the form is very strong and it vindicated our opinion of him.”
With stamina no issue Boyle hopes he can receive the luck in running that is often required to prevail in the Cesarewitch, but in trusty ally Pat Cosgrave he feels he has the right man aboard for the job.
He added: “Clearly he stays but the Cesarewitch is a bun fight with 20 plus runners and there will be a few well handicapped horses in there no doubt.
“It is a fiendishly difficult race to win but I think he has got a touch of class. We are not going there just to make up the numbers we are going there hopeful of a big run
“Pat has been with him pretty much every step of the way and guides the way we campaign him.
“It is very useful having someone who knows the horse and can give you go feedback as to way forward. He has been integral to him.”
Not only has Boyle praised The Jockey Club’s investment in upgrading a key Epsom gallop which has enabled him to put the finishing touches on Going Gone, but he has also been thankful for the effort put in by his regular work rider Louisa Allen.
He added: “The updated gallop is about month old and is our day-to-day canter we use for all our routine and conditioning work and most trainers here do that.
“It was a decent enough gallop prior to it being re-done but now it is taken another step forward since it has been upgraded. It is a really nice gallop now and it has been really helpful.
“My head girl Louisa rides him every day and she has had to do some sterling work to get him where he is now.
“He is a lot more malleable than he was 12 to 18 months ago. She has had a few hairy moments on him over the years but has done a supreme job to get his head in a much better place.”
While Boyle will lead the celebrations abroad should Going Gone taste victory closer to home there could be plenty of tears shed from Allen, who together with her partner of more than 15 years Richard Farmer, looks after him.
She said: “As a two year old he was a bit naughty but he always had a bit of quality about him.
“I clocked him and I thought I quite liked him. I rode him once when my partner was away and I’ve stuck with him ever since. It is a good partnership but he takes a bit of working out.
“To have a runner in the Cesarewitch has been kind of the bucket list since I was younger don’t ask me why. I think as I’m a National Hunt girl in a predominately Flat yard I just think the distance is similar to that of a Jump race
“I’m super excited more than anything When they jump off the nerves will start kicking in I will probably start crying if he wins but I think we all would as it would be a dream come true for a small yard like ours.”

ROYAL FLEET has an excellent strike rate and is probably still on the up, so he gets the marginal vote ahead of Regal Reality, who showed he’s every bit as good as he once was when scoring at Windsor last time Alflaila should come into it if the race is run to suit and Ottoman Fleet, a stablemate of the selection, is another to consider having just his fourth career outing.

Emergency Procedures
Newmarket Racecourses has put in place a number of security and safety measures to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However an incident may occur which is beyond our control and it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency.
As part of our safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced stewards and you will see them at various points throughout the racecourse.
In the event of a situation which requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions calmly and quickly. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards
The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area
Should it be necessary to evacuate the course, the most likely scenario is that you will be ushered onto the track itself via the emergency gates. From there you will be held in an area of safety and receive further instructions as appropriate It may give you some peace of mind if you pre plan and agree a meeting place, just in case you become separated from your party The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, please remember in the event of an emergency: TAKE YOUR BELONGINGS WITH YOU. UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE STEWARDS, PROCEED QUICKLY AND CALMLY TO THE SAFE AREA Racegoers are reminded to keep all their belongings with them at all times, and not to leave any packages unattended Any such packages may be confiscated by the Racecourse Management.
Health And Safety Notice
The Racecourse would be grateful if you would observe all Health & Safety requirements whilst you are at Newmarket Racecourses. The emergency exits from the bars onto the grandstand steppings are painted yellow and we would request that you do not stop whilst in this area. We would also request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing ramp and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting on to the actual racecourse We would also like to remind racegoers that the first aid room is located adjacent to the main Premier Enclosure Entrance (Rowley Mile) or Premier Entrance 2 (July Course).
Racehorse & Jockey Welfare
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine BHA Officials are here to ensure that the racecourse delivers those standards. In addition Newmarket Racecourses employs two veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse
In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey
If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
Photography
Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the racecourse enclosures. Photography is not permitted in any other area without the permission of the Head of Racing. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication. Racegoers are reminded that flash photography is not permitted as the flash can alarm horses and may endanger horses, jockeys and public.
