Official Racecard - £3.50 18 APRIL 2023 CRAVEN MEETING

As a leading distributor of horse feed, bedding and supplements in the greater GCC area, I am once again immensely proud to support the Jockey Club at Newmarket Racecourses for the 2023 season.

Newmarket is credited as being where thoroughbred racing first started which is why so many from every corner of the world assemble and appreciate The Rowley Mile and The July Course.

As ever, the enthusiasm of Sophie Able and her team at Newmarket translates into a top class service for Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Stable Staff and for that we are deeply grateful.

I would like to wish all those visiting Newmarket throughout the 2023 season, the very best of luck.

Have a wonderful day at the races today.

www.albasti.com

A warm welcome back to Newmarket and the historic Rowley Mile, as we kick off our season with the bet365 Craven Meeting.

This three-day fixture, first staged in 1771, provides thrilling action on track and some key clues to the weeks and months ahead

We are extremely grateful to bet365 for their sponsorship of the meeting, who sponsor three of today’s seven races, including the feature race; the Group 3 bet365 Earl of Sefton Stakes Run over one mile and one furlong, the race has been won by some greats of the past including Scottish Rifle, Gunner B and Notnowcato, all of whom went on to win multiple Group 1’s.

We also give thanks to Close Brothers, The National Stud and the Family of Alex Scott, who support our other races across the card. We are delighted to welcome back the Smullen family and friends as the second running of the Pat Smullen memorial handicap stakes takes place at 4.45pm

Looking ahead, we have two more fantastic days of racing this week, as the bet365 Craven Meeting continues, with the Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes and bet365 Craven Stakes still to come. There are tickets available for both these days, along with for the QIPCO Guineas Festival, which takes place from Friday 5th to Sunday 7th May. This year we will also be hosting a one-off spectacular celebration for the Coronation of King Charles III.

Across the season, we would like to thank the European Breeders Fund for their contributions to prize money and Al Basti Equiworld for their continued sponsorship of our Owners and Trainers facility.

I hope that you all have a wonderful time here at Newmarket and wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck.

Warm wishes,

DON’T FORGET OUR NEXT MEETINGWEDNESDAY 19TH APRIL

CRAVEN MEETING - DAY 2

The action comes thick and fast on day two, with seven high-class races. The highlight is the Group Three Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes.

Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.

‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.

Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.

Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

PLAY SMARTER

A host of promising 3-y-os and the betting will be revealing but it’s very easy to be drawn to Charlie Appleby’s pair MAJESTIC PRIDE and City of Kings, with narrow preference for the former, a half-brother to Farhh and the choice of Buick. Holguin enjoyed a good 2-y-o campaign and looks the type to train on so he’s got to be respected. Hi Royal is another with the scope to rate much higher in 2023.

FAREWELL FRANKIE….BUT NOT JUST YET!

As we begin another season here at Newmarket with the bet365 Craven Meeting, we begin the process of saying a long farewell to the best-known name in racing –Frankie

The 52 year old jockey announced in December last year that 2023 will be his last year in the saddle, with his final day of riding likely to be at the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita in November

He may have been born in Milan, but it is Newmarket and its surrounding areas that are very much the place where the Arsenal-supporting Italian has made his home since he first arrived in Britain as a teenager back in 1985

Beginning his career as an apprentice to his fellow countryman Luca Cumani, he quickly hit the ground running when riding his first winner in Britain on Lizzy Hare at Goodwood in 1987 and was crowned champion apprentice in 1989

It was a horse called Chadenshe, trained in the town by William Jarvis, that provided Frankie with the first of his 495 winners so far at Newmarket when he was successful in the Techturf Handicap on September 29th, 1988

His near half-century at Newmarket has included seven Classic successes, with wins in the QIPCO 1000 Guineas aboard Cape Verdi (1998), Kazzia (2002), Blue Bunting (2011) and Mother Earth (2021), plus the QIPCO 2000 Guineas on Mark of Esteem (1996), Island Sands (1999) and Galileo Gold (2016)

Frankie’s haul of big-race winners has included every race that is currently run as a Group 1 race in Britain bar one – the July Cup. The closest he has come to securing success in the six-furlong highlight of the July Festival is second on Iffraaj (2006), Advertise (2019) and Sceptical (2020)

Speaking ahead of the 2021 renewal, he said: “I have been living in Newmarket since 1985 and outside of the QIPCO Guineas this is our biggest race, so I would of course love to be able to win it I have won races all over the world and it is this one in my hometown that is proving the most difficult!

Hopefully, I can finally get a July Cup winner – time is precious!”

What is perhaps the most remarkable aspect of Frankie’s long career is how it spans the generations When he started riding he was up against the likes of Willie Carson, Steve Cauthen and Pat Eddery, while current rivals include Ryan Moore and William Buick.

Although he was officially “retired” when Frankie first starting riding in Britain, a certain Lester Piggott emerged as a rival when making a comeback in 1990 The “Long Fellow”, who Frankie took over from as Britain’s best-known jockey, sadly passed away last year

Lester’s career was one of shocks and surprises, twists and turns Whatever else happens this year, we can be sure that there is still lots more to come from Mr Lanfranco Dettori

TIME TEST

Okeechobee is a fine-looking horse, with a great temperament. He progressed through the ranks with consummate ease in 2022 and we are looking forward to this season, where we hope to see him win black type races.

REBEL TERRITORY didn’t progress as quite expected last season but as a result he’s back on the mark in which he made a successful reappearance last season and given how he travels a first crack at 7f could be beneficial. New Kingdom was better than ever when successful at Meydan and is sure to be popular, with Juan Les Pins another to consider

The Johnston yard saddled the winner of this in 2021 and may well repeat the dose with OUTBREAK, who wasn’t far behind Unforgotten when fourth at Wolverhampton last month, despite a poor start The 4-y-o subsequently performed with credit at Lingfield and will have every chance back on turf, provided he goes on the ground. Recent Doncaster winner Bucephalus and Ashky are among the big dangers.

OTTOMAN FLEET holds the edge on form having been in good nick in Meydan this winter and represents last year’s winning yard so gets the vote in an open Earl of Sefton Stakes. Poker Face takes a step up in class but this unbeaten gelding looked an exciting prospect last term and could prove the chiefthreat ahead of Raadobarg who could have more to offer now with George Boughey.

COVEY shaped like a decent prospect when going close at Southwell on his debut 2 weeks ago and can go one place better in what looks an ordinary maiden for the track. Palamon is worth another chance to confirm debut promise and rates the main threat ahead of Molaqab, who shaped better than the bare result at Doncaster first-time out in November

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards In addition Haydock Park Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
