ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHARE HOLDERS AND STAFF, I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU BACK TO NEWTON ABBOT FOR OUR 2021 SEASON. AS USUAL, WE START THE SEASON WITH OUR EASTER SATURDAY MEETING AND HAVE A COMPETITIVE EIGHTRACE CARD.
I would like to thank all the Owners with us today and those that will be at home watching on Sky Sports Channel 415 for entering their horses. I have sent you all a digital racecard through Weatherbys which you should have received yesterday. I would like to thank all our sponsors today: TRP The Racing Partnership, Sky Sports Racing, South West Racing Club and Racing Welfare. Today we also have a Memorial race for Mike Bassett who was a loving husband and father, and a member of the racecourse staff. He will be sorely missed by everyone. The past 13 months have been extremely difficult for everyone in the country and most businesses. All racecourses have their own stories to tell and Newton Abbot Racecourse is no different. Last season, when we were about to start racing, Covid-19 raised its ugly head, this meant losing eight meetings. Jump racing started a month later than the flat on 1 July. Newton Abbot started on 7 July and we managed 10 meetings all behind closed doors and therefore no crowds, no hospitality and no happy faces. A huge effort was made behind the scenes to get the course compliant with Covid regulations. The weighing room was moved to the betting hall and Owners, when allowed, were moved upstairs in the Paddock Suite. Move forward to April 2021 and we have hope with the roll-out of vaccines. However, from a business point of view, we have racing back but no crowds, no in-house catering, and little income. The four point plan to get back to normal will, for almost all racecourses, rely on the removal of the 2m distancing rule. We are planning for crowds and smiling faces, but there remains a nervousness. Once again, I thank all the Owners that supported Newton Abbot last season and we hope that continues this year. We certainly hope at some point soon that we can all get back to normal operations as safely as possible. Very best wishes, PATRICK MASTERSON MANAGING DIRECTOR

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

This looks a good opportunity for HELL RED having got his career back on track with a solid effort in the Fred Winter at the Cheltenham Festival last month. His stablemate Celestial Force may have benefited from a wind operation/break and can pose the main threat, though hurdling newcomer Trailboss also warrants consideration.

Our final meeting of what was a turbulent season was not only another high-quality day of racing, but a day that saw the start of successful winters for many classy sorts. Perhaps the classiest of those was the Harry fry-trained Metier, who began his career over hurdles with a deeply impressive success in the Weatherbys e-Passport Novices’ Hurdle. Run over two miles and two and a half furlongs in heavy ground, it was a test for the novices, but the four-year-old skipped through the race in the style of a horse who we would be hearing a lot more of in the coming months. He drew ten lengths clear of the useful Oneupmanship in the closing stages in what was a thoroughly professional
4
start to his hurdling career. Of course, he went on to become a 5 Grade 1 winner in the past year, bolting up in the Tolworth Hurdle at Sandown Park and it was fantastic to see a Newton Abbot ‘graduate’ hit those heights. Another horse who used Newton Abbot as a springboard to a winter of great success was the Paul Henderson-trained Crossley Tender, who relished the stiff test of stamina in the 3m2f newtonabbotrace On Twitter Handicap Chase. Always prominently positioned by jockey Nick Scholfield, the seven-year-old was ridden to the lead approaching the last and ran on
newtonabbotracing.com
strongly to win by just over six lengths. He improved hand over fist as the season went on, winning on three more occasions, going up 29lb in the handicap and finishing a close second in the famous four-mile Eider Chase at Newcastle in February. Arian, trained by Philip Hobbs, was a ready winner of the Weatherbys Racing Bank Handicap Chase, run over two miles and five furlongs. The mare swept past the smart Momella two out and kept on well to win by three and a half lengths. She won next time out at Warwick, while the runner up won three times this season, including a Listed contest just up the A380 at Exeter. More smart types saw the track in the Looking Forward To Easter Saturday 2021 Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race as Grandeur D’Ame, trained by Oliver Sherwood, got the better of David Pipe’s Gericault Rouge in a high-quality contest. The winner relished the heavy ground and Daryl Jacob merely had to keep him up to his work to win nicely. He went on to finish a close second in a Listed contest at Chel-
tenham in November and while he made no impression in tough assignments over hurdles since, he’ll retain his novice status for the 2021/22 season and could be a stayer to follow. The runner-up franked the form by winning twice over hurdles and will himself be a horse to follow next season. Harry Fry actually saddled a double on the day as Mille Sussurri was a cosy winner of the newtonabbotracing.com Handicap Hurdle under Sean Bowen, who was also in the saddle for Metier’s success. Memphis Belle provided a family success for the Williams’ in the Weatherbys Stallion Book Mares’ Handicap Hurdle as the Evan-trained mare was ridden to a four-length victory by jockey and daughter, Isabel. It was a brave success over the 3m 2½f trip and the six-year-old’s fourth staying hurdle victory in a row. On his first start for 229 days and equipped with cheekpieces for the first time, The Raven’s Return made his way into the winners’ enclosure for the first time since May 2019 as he took the Devon Heat Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle with Daniel Sansom in the saddle. The Seamus Mullins-trained seven-year-old was produced with expert timing approaching the last, holding on well from Jack Valentine on the run in. PHOTOS: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

RONDE DE NUIT looks a likely type for handicaps and gets the nod, with confidence increased should the betting speak in his favour. Fellow J P McManus runner Pasley will be a threat if bouncing back to the level of his penultimate Warwick third. Bempton Cliffs could be sharper with a recent comeback run behind him and is also on the shortlist.

Apart from supporting the local courses the Club has organised trips to various venues including Stratford, Wincanton and Warwick. Last year we went to Ireland visiting the stables of Jessica Harrington and Henry de Bromhead as well as racing at Clonmel and Gowran Park. Stable visits are always popular and during the last 12 months we have been welcomed at the yards of Anthony Honeyball, Fergal O’Brien, and Nigel Twiston-Davies. Our three day autumn trip to Newmarket took in a stud visit, the Warren Hill gallops, the Museum and Huntingdon races. We called in at Oaksey House, Lambourn on the way up to Newmarket to see the facilities provided for the injured jockeys.

The ones at the top of the weights make most appeal, with GENERAL BUX a tentative selection to get back to winning ways. He seemingly failed to stay when pulled up at Fakenham in January and this sort of test should be more suitable. Calin du Brizais probably needed the run last time out so heads the dangers, ahead of Game Line.
