ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF, I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU BACK TO NEWTON ABBOT FOR OUR THIRD FIXTURE OF THE 2021 SEASON. WE HAVE ON OFFER OVER £86,000 WITH EIGHT COMPETITIVE RACES, WITH ONE OF OUR RACES ON ITV.
I would like to thank all the Owners with us today and those that will be at home watching on Sky Sports Channel 415 and ITV for entering their horses. I have sent you all a digital racecard through Weatherby’s which you should have received yesterday. We have increased the number of badges for the Owners at the next two meetings to 3 this has been agreed by the Safety Advisory Group and the local Environmental Health Officer. A copy of the digital racecard has been sent to the ROA and hopefully posted on their website. I would like to thank all our sponsors today: TRP The Racing Partnership, Sky Sports Racing, Talk Tidy Marketing, St Austell Brewery, Attheraces. The past 13 months have been extremely difficult for everyone in the country and most businesses. All racecourses have their own stories to tell and Newton Abbot Racecourse is no different. Last season when we were about to start racing Covid-19 raised its ugly head, this meant losing eight meetings. Jump racing started a month later than the flat on 1 July. Newton Abbot started on 7 July and we managed 10 meetings all behind closed doors and therefore no crowds, no hospitality and no happy faces. A huge effort was made behind the scenes to get the course compliant with Covid regulations. The weighing room was moved to the betting hall. Owners when allowed were moved upstairs in the Paddock Suite. Move forward to April 2021 and we have hope with the roll out of vaccines. However, from a business point of view, we have racing back but no crowds, no in-house catering, and little income. The four point plan to get back to normal will for almost all racecourse rely on the removal of the 2m distancing rule. We are planning for crowds and smiling faces, but there remains a nervousness. I am currently in talks with the Safety Advisory Group and the Environmental Health Officer regarding the possibility of crowds Once again, I thank all the Owners that supported Newton Abbot last season and we hope that continues this year. We certainly hope at some point soon that we can all get back to normal operations as safely as possible. Very best wishes, PATRICK MASTERSON MANAGING DIRECTOR

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
You must be 18 or over to place a bet You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

LAST MEETING REVIEW | TUESDAY 13TH APRIL 2021

1
There were a few shocks in our previous meeting, with a couple of short-priced favourites turned over in some excellent finishes. We also saw some enterprising rides from some promising youngsters in the saddle and it was no doubt a taste of things to come in the near future. The day started with the Visit attheraces.com Novices’ Hurdle, run over two miles. Short-priced favourite Natural History was beaten half a length by the Chris Down-trained Opening Bid. Natural History was quite keen throughout the race and it probably cost him at the finish line. James Davies produced an excellent ride to get Opening Bid back up on the
4
run in and it was an extremely game performance. Natural History 5 wasn’t to be the last favourite to be beaten and in the very next race Glory And Honour was well beaten by State Crown for the Evan Williams team. Tom O’Brien showed that even though Richard Johnson has left the saddle, those good rides are going to a more than capable jockey, who is really showing what he can do now he’s in the limelight. The newly-fitted cheekpieces did the trick here and although Twin Star put in a good performance in second, his sticky jumping ultimately secured the win for State Crown.
newtonabbotracing.com
O’Brien was denied a quick-fire double by the narrowest of margins in the third race of the afternoon. Tequila Blaze really came up well for Paddy Brennan and the slickness of the jump at the last was enough to win him the Mares’ Maiden Hurdle. The feature race of the day, the Racing Partnership Handicap Chase, went the way of the Simon Munir & Isaac Souede team and their retained jockey Daryl Jacob. Sir Sholokhov was well fancied and produced an excellent performance to win going away, despite jumping out to his right on occasions. After picking it up turning for home, he looked like he might run away with it but Go Long rallied well to keep Daryl Jacob on his toes, but victory never looked in doubt for Harry Fry’s improver. Angus Cheleda showed why he is one of the best conditional jockeys around when winning the Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle by an emphatic 13 lengths on Nick Mitchell’s Mystic Court. He stalked the leaders coming down to the last three hurdles and
jumped into the lead at the penultimate hurdle. There was more than enough horse left underneath him and while his rivals were left scrambling for places, he and Mystic Court simply went further clear. It was a tough act to follow in the penultimate race but Tikkinthebox and young claimer Kieren Buckley gave it an excellent go as they won the William Hill Betting TV Handicap Chase. Red Inca looked to be coming with a challenge but made a mistake at the second last, which ultimately meant he was destined for second. The final race was a National Hunt Flat race, that saw a whole host of top yards represented. Mollyvico made most of the running but was quickly swallowed up by those in behind turning for home. Hard Frost for Paul Nicholls and Bryan Carver took over but they in turn were stalked into the straight by eventual winner, Ted’s Friend. He made eye-catching progress throughout the race and came their cruising to pick it up. Once popped the question by Max Kendrick, he went away readily and looks another top prospect for the in-form Fergal O’Brien team.

PLAY SMARTER
BALLADAME ran well on each of her three starts in handicaps before the turn of the year and could have a bit more to offer now setting out for a new yard given she’s still low mileage, so she receives the vote. Ayr of Elegance has to go on the shortlist now she’s up and running again, with Undisputed and As High Say others to consider.

PLAY SMARTER
A competitive finale in which it may pay to take a chance on the returning SAINTE DOCTOR. She didn’t kick on from her initial promise early last year but returns with her yard going nicely and it would come as no surprise to see a better showing in a first-time tongue tie. Minnie Escape and She’s a Novelty are others to consider, along with Kentford Mallard.
