newtonabbotracing.com

ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF, I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU BACK TO NEWTON ABBOT FOR OUR FOURTH FIXTURE OF THE 2021 SEASON. WE AGAIN HAVE ONE RACE ON ITV.

I would like to thank all the Owners with us today and those that will be at home watching on Sky Sports Channel 415 and ITV for entering their horses. I have sent you all a digital racecard through Weatherbys which you should have received yesterday. We have increased the number of badges for the Owners at the next two meetings to 3 - this has been agreed by the Safety Advisory Group and the local Environmental Health Officer. A copy of the digital racecard has been sent to the ROA and hopefully posted on their website. I would like to thank all our sponsors today: TRP The Racing Partnership, Sky Sports Racing, Racing Welfare, St Austell Brewery, Attheraces and Totnes and Bridgetown Steeplechase Company. The past 14 months have been extremely difficult for everyone in the country and most businesses. All racecourses have their own stories to tell and Newton Abbot Racecourse is no different. Last season when we were about to start racing Covid-19 raised its ugly head, this meant losing eight meetings. Jump racing started a month later than the Flat on 1 July. Newton Abbot started on 7 July and we managed 10 meetings all behind closed doors and therefore no crowds, no hospitality and no happy faces. A huge effort was made behind the scenes to get the course compliant with Covid regulations. The weighing room was moved to the betting hall. Owners when allowed were moved upstairs in the Paddock Suite. Move forward to April 2021 and we have hope with the roll out of vaccines. However, from a business point of view, we have racing back but no crowds, no in-house catering, and little income. The four point plan to get back to normal will for almost all racecourses rely on the removal of the 2m distancing rule. We are planning for crowds and smiling faces, but there remains a nervousness. I am currently in talks with the Safety Advisory Group and the Environmental Health Officer regarding the possibility of crowds from Wednesday 26 May, however it will be a small crowd. Once again, I thank all the Owners that supported Newton Abbot last season and we hope that continues this year. We certainly hope at some point soon that we can all get back to normal operations as safely as possible. Very best wishes, PATRICK MASTERSON MANAGING DIRECTOR 3

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

You must be 18 or over to place a bet You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted 5

LAST MEETING REVIEW | WEDNESDAY 5TH MAY 2021

Trainer Colin Tizzard enjoyed a fantastic day at our third meeting of the season as he saddled three consecutive winners on the eight-race card, including the feature Class 2 race of the afternoon. The feature contest was the Racing Partnership TRP Handicap Chase and it saw Tizzard gain his first success of the day as Kauto The King completed his own hat-trick in a thrilling finish. Positive tactics had been used to good effect with the seven-year-old in his last two starts at Wincanton and Chepstow and he set out from the front again last Wednesday, with Brendan Powell in the saddle this time around. Having his first try at Class 2 level, Kauto The King continued his progression as he was up with

5

the pace throughout and kept finding extra when challenged two fences from home to see off his rivals by a short head.

6

In the following newtonabbot racing.com Handicap Chase, proven stayer Christmas In April showed his stamina as he got back to winning ways for Tizzard in the three miles and two furlong race. A winner of the Devon National last year, Christmas In April had not been in the same form this season but bounced back as he enjoyed the good ground on this occasion. The 12/1 shot had to be ridden four fences out but he responded well for Brendan Powell and powered home to win by two and a quarter lengths.

newtonabbotracing.com

4 - KAUTO THE KING (right) won our feature Class 2 handicap chase last week

It was also a one-two for Colin Tizzard in the race as in second was his more-fancied runner Highest Sun. The third win in a row for Tizzard came courtesy of Amarillo Sky in the St Austell Brewery Handicap Hurdle, this time with Jonjo O’Neill Jr. in the saddle. It was the most comfortable of the trainer’s three victories on the card as Amarillo Sky won in fine style by sixteen lengths. Having finished midfield in a Grade 3 handicap at Aintree’s Grand National Festival last time out, he was dropped back in trip and made all for an emphatic success. The five-year-old was making it his second win from four starts this season and he looks like a nice prospect to follow going forward. The afternoon also saw Fergal O’Brien and Paddy Brennan team up for a double on the card, with their first win coming with Trailboss in the Talk Tidy Marketing Novices’ Hurdle. The six-year-old had showed promise when third on his hurdling debut over course and distance a month ago and he built on that effort to get off the mark, doing well to overcome a mistake at the last to score by six lengths.

The second winner of the day for the trainer and jockey combination came in the penultimate race, division one of the Watch Free Race Replays On attheraces.com Mares’ Handicap Hurdle, where As High Say made a successful stable debut having not raced since winning an Irish point-to-point back in October. In division two of the handicap hurdle, Sainte Doctor made a winning return to action for Neil Mullholland having been off the track for 422 days and it was Aidan Coleman who produced the mare from the rear of the field to win by a length. Earlier on the card, Southfield Harvest had made an impressive chasing debut for Paul Nicholls and Bryony Frost in the opening NewtonAbbotRace On Twitter Beginners’ Chase, showing his inexperience in the early stages before getting the hang of things to win by six lengths. This was followed by success for another useful type as Dragon Bones made it her fourth win from five starts over hurdles in the Sky Sports Racing On Sky 415 Mares’ Novice. Ridden by Robert Dunne, she was completing her hat-trick for Ian Williams and she is an exciting mare for her connections to look forward to.
