ETHAN GRANDE LOOKS BACK AT NORTHAMPTON TOWN MATCHES ON THIS DATE IN YEARS GONE BY.
All the goals came in the second half after a scrappy opening period in which defences were on top. The deadlock was broken in the 55th minute when a wonderfully executed overhead-kick from Rod McDonald flew into the corner of the net. Ricky Holmes doubled the Cobblers' advantage 10 minutes later when he controlled the ball on his chest before unleashing a powerful 25-yard volley past Orient goalkeeper Alex Cisak The league's leading scorer Jay Simpson went close to pulling a goal back for the home side when he drilled a shot narrowly wide of the post, but it was James Collins who had the final word with two goals in the final six minutes. He pounced in a crowded penalty area to stab the ball into the net from close range and then rounded off a fine afternoon for the visitors when he lashed home a shot from the edge of the box to complete Northampton's seventh straight league win. 1993 - DIVISION 3 HEREFORD UNITED 3 NORTHAMPTON TOWN 2
A Saturday afternoon trip to Edgar Street to play Hereford United where new loan player Paul Tisdale replaced Phil Chard. The Cobblers took the lead first as Stuart Young scored his first goal for the club when he hooked home a half cleared Bell corner. Within a minute of this goal going in Hereford equalised as Hall brought the scores level when he headed home an Anderson cross. In the second half Hereford took the lead with another headed goal, this time from Nicholas who scored after Richardson missed the ball. The home side increased their advantage and Pickard made the score 3-1 to Hereford by being at the right place at the right time. The Cobblers got a consolation goal as Phil Chard converted a Darren Harmon cross. 1971 - DIVISION 4 NORTHAMPTON TOWN 2 AFC BOURNEMOUTH 3
AFC Bournemouth visited the County Ground and were met with some familiar faces as Book and East were in the Cobblers side. Bournemouth took control in the first half as MacDougall was brought down by Townsend in the box and he converted the penalty himself. Then three minutes later the visitors doubled their lead as MacDougall headed Machin’s free kick past Book. The away side extended their lead as Boyer made it 3-0 with a shot from the edge of the box. The Cobblers started to liven up as a goalmouth scramble ended with Fairbrother forcing the ball over the line. In the final minutes Fairbrother scored a second converting a Brookes free kick. The game ended 3-2 to the Cherries.
