He started his footballing career at Aberdeen and made his first team debut for Aberdeen vs Dundee United in 2003, coming on as a half time substitute.

In his first season at Pittodrie he won 'Young Player of the month' for February. In all, he was at Aberdeen for seven seasons, also gaining international recognition for the Scotland under 21 team.

In 2011, Zander made his move south of the border and joined Oldham Athletic. He played 21 games, scoring two goals in his one season at Boundary Park. He left the Latics in July 2012 to move to Burton for an undisclosed fee.

Zander stayed at Burton for two seasons, playing 47 games and scoring five goals. While at Burton, he came on loan to the Cobblers, making 14 appearances and scoring one goal. He impressed then boss Chris Wilder so much that he signed permanently for the 2014-2015 season.
