THE THOUGHTS OF
G
ood afternoon wherever you are watching or following today's game from. These are my first programme notes since the play-offs and what a ten days or so we experienced back in June. I thought we handled a very difficult set of circumstances superbly and we fully deserved our promotion on the back of some fantastic performances against Cheltenham Town and Exeter City. I go back to what I said when I first arrived at the football club, the first step of any journey is to have belief, and we had that belief that we had a great opportunity when we entered the play-offs. Even going 2-0 down in that first leg did not change or deter our mindset. We still had that belief that we could get through and go on to win promotion at Wembley and we did just that. That will be our mindset again this season, to have that belief and to
tackle the challenges head on, and we know we have a fantastic challenge ahead of us. We are building towards what we are striving to achieve in an exciting looking League 1 this season, and we know as supporters you will be with us every step of the way, whether that be watching games in stadiums or from home. We have made some excellent signings and recruited some top characters this summer. As I have said before, I meet potential new signings more than once and those meetings are an important part of our recruitment process. I get a feel for the player and what makes them tick, and the player gets a better understanding of the demands and the expectations that we place upon them. Some players give the right answers and some don't, but we back ourselves that we bring in the right characters more often than not

and players who fit in with who we are and the profile we are looking to create. We never shy away from any challenge and that will be the case again today. We are looking forward to taking on a side who finished in the Championship play-offs in the first round of this season’s Carabao Cup, and we know they have good players who are successful in the way they play. We welcome Neil Harris, who did a terrific job taking over at Cardiff last season, and today is a great opportunity to take on a very good Championship football club as we look to continue our upward curve and our progression in the season ahead. Finally from me, thank you to our match sponsors, Nicel Precision Engineering. Wherever you are watching the game from, please enjoy the match.

STRIKER CAN’T WAIT TO GET GOING
N
orthampton Town completed the signing of striker Joe Nuttall on a season long loan from Blackpool on Monday. The 23 year old Nuttall has a big fan in manager Keith Curle, who admitted in the media that he has been monitoring the progress of the former Manchester City and Blackburn Rovers man for a number of years. For Nuttall, he says the challenge is to make an impact during the coming season here at the PTS Academy Stadium. "This is a great opportunity for me to come and play and help a team that is heading in the right direction having recently won promotion," he said. "I watched the play-offs and thought they did really well in those
games and having spoken to the players who I know, they spoke really highly about the club and the manager. I came here to speak to Keith Curle and he really impressed me and convinced me this is where I want to be. "His record and reputation for developing players was one of the biggest factors in attracting me here." Nuttall says he can't wait to get going, having not played a competitive game since the COVID-19 outbreak in March. Nuttall scored a 90th minute winner for his parent club against Ipswich Town just before football was suspended. "I am the same as any player at the minute," he said. "I am desperate to get back, to get playing and to show what I can do. It has been a long time and I can't wait to be back

out there and while fans will be watching online to start with, hopefully they can be back in the stands soon. "It will be good game for us today. We obviously face tough opposition but it will be a good test for us and if I can be involved in the game today I will be delighted. "I did my academy years at Manchester City and then moved on to Blackburn and really enjoyed my time there. I owe a lot to the coaches at both Blackburn and Blackpool and now I can't wait to get going here and to show the managers and the supporters what I can do. "I know Scott Wharton, another player from Blackburn, really enjoyed his time here last season and hopefully I can have the same impact Scott did."

14TH AUGUST 2012 COBBLERS 2-1 CARDIFF CITY The Cobblers pulled off a Capital One Cup upset as they knocked out the previous year’s runners-up Cardiff City in the first round of the 2012-13 competition. The Bluebirds took the lead within two minutes, as Heidar Helguson converted the penalty he won when Cobblers captain Kelvin Langmead brought him down with a clumsy challenge. Eight minutes before the interval, David Artell levelled the scoreline with a header from a Ben Tozer long throw that trickled past debutant Joe Lewis in goal. Alex Nicholls won the game three minutes after half time, nodding in at the back post after Lewis failed to deal with an inswinging Ben Harding corner. Aidy Boothroyd’s men held on to the narrow advantage and progressed to round two.
4TH FEBRUARY 2003 COBBLERS 0-1 CARDIFF CITY A three-month Cobblers’ goal drought at home continued as they lost 1-0 to Cardiff at Sixfields. Robert Earnshaw shot wide and volleyed over, home keeper Glyn Thompson saved at the feet of Peter Thorne and Graham Kavanagh struck the bar as the Bluebirds missed several decent opportunities in the first half. Marco Gabbiadini had the Cobblers’ best chance, rounding visiting number one Neil Alexander before Scott Young cleared. Wales international Earnshaw broke the deadlock on the hour mark for his 23rd league goal of the campaign, acrobatically turning in a Thorne header which hit the bar. It was a comfortable victory for the promotion hopefuls, meaning the Cobblers had failed to score or earn a point at home since mid-November.
17TH AUGUST 2002 CARDIFF CITY 1-2 COBBLERS Marco Gabbiadini scored a brace as the Cobblers beat Cardiff 2-1 at Ninian Park in the 2002-03 Division Two season. The experienced forward opened the scoring 10 minutes in with a powerful 35-yard strike. Bluebirds captain Graham Kavanagh equalised after a quarter-of-an-hour, heading home a loose ball. Five minutes after the break, Gabbiadini poked home the winner from close range. Despite threatening late on, there was to be no equaliser for Lennie Lawrence’s side. CARDIFF CITY STADIUM
A
ppointing Neil Harris from Millwall mid-way through last season proved to be a stroke of genius from the Bluebirds hierarchy. Leading them to an unlikely play-off appearance in last season’s Championship campaign, Harris has changed things around in the Welsh capital. Coming up against elite Championship opposition, this opening fixture to the 2020/21 season will provide the sternest of tests for the Cobblers.
ONE TO WATCH: There are a whole host of players to pick here, and with a potential shake-up to Harris’ squad it’s tricky to pinpoint one player who will definitely start. However, one to watch will be Junior Hoilett. The Canadian’s seven league goals and 3 assists last season mean he’s one of Cardiff’s most dangerous men going forward.
Only once in the past decade have the Cobblers come up against Cardiff and that ended in victory in this exact competition! Back when it was called the Capital One Cup in 2012, the Cobblers were under the management of current England U21 boss Aidy Boothroyd. Northampton prevailed as 2-1 winners at Sixfields. A Heidar Helguson penalty in the first five minutes saw the Welsh side take an early lead. But goals from David Artell and Alex Nicholls saw Boothroyd’s side advance from the first round.
NEIL Neil Harris was appointed Cardiff City manager in November 2019, taking over from Neil Warnock. The ex-Millwall boss, 43, took over with Cardiff 14th in the Championship and led the side into the play-offs following a strong second half to the season. As a player, Harris scored 138 goals over two spells at Millwall and also had a brief spell on loan at Cardiff back in late 2004. He took over as caretaker manager at the New Den in March 2015 following the Lions relegation to League 1 and guided the club back into the Championship two years later. He also twice led the London club to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup before resigning in October 2017. David Livermore, who worked under Harris at Millwall, is his assistant.
