WELCOME
Welcome to Festive Fun Raceday
Our final fixture of the year and I would like to welcome you all to The Festive Fun Raceday. With only 10 days until Christmas Day, the countdown is truly on, and we hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable and merry time today. Throughout the year we have been blessed with fantastic racing, close finishes and you, our greatest supporters how have turned up in all weathers, and we are sure today will be equally as exciting and I thank you for your continued support.
I would like to thank our Partners; BetGoodwin, Southern Cranes and Access Ltd and Strong Flavours for their tremendous support for 2024, along with today’s sponsors Dawson Hart, Friends and Family of Betty Chandler, Friends and Family of Jeremy Taylor, G E White & Sons, Crystal Services and Weatherbys. We wish you all have a tremendous day.
We have a cracking 7 race card today, with 59 runners declared worth over £67,000 of prize money so we are in for a cracking day. Our feature race today is our £21,000 The Betty Chantler 97th Birthday Novices Handicap Steeple Chase, which was won last year by Oxygen, ridden by Charlie Deutsch and trained by Venetia Williams, narrowly beating Pepe Le Moko. The renewal this year looks very competitive with 6 going to post, and we wish everyone the best of luck.
Make sure you visit both our Christmas market located next to the Final Fence Restaurant as there will be many gifts that you can purchase, ideal for stocking fillers and the Paddock Bar where Queue the Audio will be playing throughout the day, so get your Christmas dancing shoes on!
Today we have Baron Alco, nickname ‘Barry’ in our Retired Racehorse Stable. He is our Retraining Of Racehorses (ROR) ‘Horses for Courses’ and we are delighted to welcome him to Plumpton. During his career he won a pair of Cheltenham bonus series races in the 2016/17 season for owner John Stone and defeated Frodon in the BetVictor Gold Cup. Make sure you pop over and give him a polo and a pat.
Our next fixture will be our Premier Raceday on the 5th January featuring not only the Sussex National won last Season by Dom Of Mary but also our Sussex Stayers Hurdle worth £75,000 won by Transmission and ridden by Joe Anderson who provided one of the best rides of the year. This day will have a total prize fund of £201,000. We will also have plenty of activities on the day for all the family, including an Ice-Skating Ring and as this raceday is always in high demand, make sure you book admission tickets or hospitality now not to miss out.
Craig Staddon Chief Executive
May I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
Have a great day at Plumpton, Heart Of The Community and see you in 2025.
Best wishes,
Stewards

EPIC WEST, who swapped hands for 60,000 euros after winning a point-to-point in March, impressed with a ready success on his hurdles debut at Carlisle last month and is a highly appealing option given his strong physique suggests a 7lb penalty shouldn’t be too much of an issue. Touquet, a C&D winner on his penultimate start, can surely do better than he managed at Ascot subsequently and also commands respect. Westerton looks the pick of the remainder. totewin: Epic West
toteeachway: Touquet
A low-mileage eight-year-old, DUBROVNIK HARRY contested deeper races over timber and may find this level provides him with an ideal test of stamina for his return to fences. A respectable third on his only previous chase start, Harry Fry’s charge appeals with his potential still untapped in this discipline. D’jo Dela Barriere is notable after his facile hurdles success over 2m at Hereford. Course winner Alien Storm also enters the reckoning.
totewin: Dubrovnik Harry
toteeachway: D’jo Dela Barriere
Bold Recruit has been consistent by finishing second on his three previous starts under Rules. However, that tendency to find one too good brings enough doubt to cast a vote for the Paul Nicholls-trained KEN ROY, who is in the right hands to make progress and is entitled to be sharper after his jumping bow on his return to action at Lingfield. Jail No Bail and Onomaris are a couple of other potential improvers to consider.
totewin: Ken Roy

toteeachway: Bold Recruit
LADY BALKO relished the step up in trip when landing the spoils over C&D a fortnight ago. That was just the five-year-old’s second outing over fences and she scored with enough in hand to suggest that a 9lb hike in the ratings won’t prevent her from following up. Village Master racked up a five-timer earlier in the year and he can be excused his reappearance when pulled up at Ffos Las after being hampered twice. Warren Greatrex’s charge is feared most, ahead of the returning Northern Poet.
totewin: Lady Balko
toteeachway: Village Master
A 6lb rise for MUTLEY CREW’s victory at Fontwell looks on the lenient side. The second added substance to the form when runner-up at Uttoxeter and Robert Walford’s unexposed mare should prove tough to beat. Whynotnowroy found only a handicap debutant too strong at Fontwell and isn’t taken lightly racing off an unchanged mark. Jewel Eyed Judy is worth a market check on her entry into handicap company.
totewin: Mutley Crew
toteeachway: Whynotnowroy
Not beaten far in his attempt to land a double at Wincanton last month, I SHUT THAT D’OR was a comfortable winner over C&D on his penultimate outing and a return to this track is a major plus. A mark of 100 still looks manageable and he is preferred to Hidalgo Des Bordes, who has had wind surgery since finishing third at Fontwell in May. A winner twice before occupying the runner-up berth at Sedgefield, Mutual Respect is another key player.
totewin: I Shut That D’or
toteeachway: Hidalgo Des Bordes
A promising third at Warwick on debut in November last year, despite being slowly into stride, MUSTANG BETTY is likely to have plenty of improvement forthcoming on the rise in distance and she can get off the mark. Chique Angel was over five lengths behind the selection in fourth but still enters the reckoning, along with Appleshaw, who is an interesting newcomer for the Harry Fry team. Related to multiple winners, Media Style must also be monitored for market support first time out.
totewin: Mustang Betty
toteeachway: Chique Angel

ANDASHAN laid a good platform for hurdling in 2 bumper runs in the spring and is taken to make the most of the 7lb he receives from last month’s Carlisle scorer Epic West. Westerton’s Flat ability suggests it’s only a matter of time before he posts a bigger performance over hurdles and he could also have a say if reacting positively to blinkers.

HORSE CARE AT PLUMPTON
At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action.
During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Paramedic team responsible for human casualties.
The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.
USE OF SCREENS
It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy, and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery.
Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse.
All equine care at Plumpton is provided by: Sussex Equine Hospital Billingshurst Rd, Ashington, West Sussex RH20 3BB

Race preview from Weatherbys
Just six go to post for this afternoon’s penultimate race, the weatherbysshop. co.uk Handicap Chase, a 0-100 class 5 contest staged over 2m3½f.
The weights are headed by Warren Greatrex’s Hidalgo des Bordes and Joe Tizzard’s course-and-distance winner I Shut That d’Or. The former – a seven-year-old by Coastal Path – runs for the first time since May and has had wind surgery since last seen. A winner on good ground at Exeter on his first start over fences, he was slightly hampered (sandwiched) at the final fence on his most recent start and has since been dropped 1lb.
I Shut That d’Or made most and showed a fine attitude to fend off a subsequent winner (won here at Plumpton, incidentally) when successful over course-and-distance in early-November and was only narrowly denied off a 3lbs higher mark at Wincanton, where he jumped out to his left. With that in mind, he should appreciate reverting to a left-handed track and despite having gone up another 2lbs, the six-year-old appears to be a top of his game at present.
He looks set to run a big race under Sam TwistonDavies, who deputises for the suspended Brendan Powell.
Bill Aprahamian’s Mutual Respect is another who has been in good form this season, successful on soft ground at Worcester and Bangor-on-Dee, before failing to complete the hat-trick when runner-up off today’s mark at Sedgefield.
Pleasure Garden made a winning chase debut here at Plumpton, when left clear at the final fence in April 2023. That win came off a mark of 81 and having been well-held the twice since, is back down to the exact same rating. The seven-year-old likes decent ground, so wouldn’t want conditions to deteriorate and having missed the whole of last season and a possible engagement at Lingfield recently (due to soft ground), this will be his first start in 545 days
Trainer Karen Jewell is also represented by Millies Mite who was actually pulled-up in that Lingfield race in which Pleasure Garden was due to return. The eight-year-old mare is a lot more experienced/exposed than her stable-mate and she looks to be up against it here, despite receiving plenty of weight.
Shaw’s Cross also carries 10-2, but actually races from 2lbs out of the handicap. The 12-year-old hasn’t won since January 2023 when he won a novices’ handicap chase at this venue, but that is his sole win in 21 starts over fences.
Leading course trainer (19-24): J Tizzard (15 wins from 64 runners, 23%) runs I SHUT THAT D’OR Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): W Greatrex (3 wins from 15 runners, 20%) runs HIDALGO DES BORDES

CHIQUE ANGEL has been off the track since an encouraging debut at Warwick (when very green) over a year ago and she can improve enough to open her account at the second attempt. Mustang Betty has also been off a good while since a positive start, but she’s feared most ahead of the well-bred newcomer Media Style.

Horse and Jockey Welfare
The welfare of the sports equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of licensed trainers. The standards demanded by the BHA far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The BHA similarly licenses racecourses setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course.
At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all the horses with two vets following the horses as they race and the third being based in the stable yard.
Parade Ring Access
In the interests of safety, access to the parade ring is strictly limited to Owners and Trainers with runners in the race, BHA and Racecourse Officials who are on duty at the meeting and Emergency Service Personnel.
